Tip for converting AVI w/divx & DVDs to iPod

As many others here have done, I purchased QuickTime Pro to use as a conversion tool to get various videos into my iPod. As I quickly found out, QuickTime Pro for Windows (QTPW) is pretty lame. It can't handle the Divx video codec used in some AVI files. I got around this by downloading the 3ivx.com codec, but the audio still wouldn't work. This is because QTPW doesn't handle MP3 audio encoded at a variable bitrate - which is quite common in AVI files also. Running the file through two programs is too much of a pain, so I'm giving up on QTPW for now.
I found another program that so far is working quite well. It is called "Cucusoft iPod video converter + DVD to iPod Suite". Its working well on my AVI files with DIVX video. I haven't tried it yet on DVDs. You can find this software for free eval download at: http://www.goripper.com/dvd-to-ipod-guide.html
Good luck!
  Windows XP

Download Handbrake from http://handbrake.m0k.org/
This will allow you to rip the video from the DVD to your computer and you can select the settings you want for use either full screen on the computer or optimized for the IPod. Select your DVD and handbrake will read the chapters. Under the Destination section Select your File format as MP4 file, then AVC/H.264 Video / AAC Audio Codec. Either change the location of the file or leave the default setting. For the Video section leave the framerate to Same as source, the encoder needs to be x264 (Baseline profile), the max bitrate that has worked for me was 750 the iPod can do 768 but it doesn't seem to work correctly when selecting 768, I reccoment using 2-pass encoding, it makes the file better quality but it takes twice as long to encode, although it shouldn't be a problem on you Intel iMac, it still goes pretty well on my DP G5. If you want subtitles select the language. For Audio under Language 1 you can use any of the settings that are available from the DVD, I have never turned on Language 2 so not sure what it would do. Sample rate can be as high as 48000 that is the max the program has and the iPod will accpet. The iPod's max bit rate is 160. I got all the info for the iPod's specs from Apple's website. Click on Picture settings change the Size to 320x240 or whatever is close for wide screen video. I usually turn off Keep aspect ratio after I change the size settings. It said on a website I found that there was a bug in Handbrake that it might crash if this was on. I leave the other settings the way they are. Close the window and select Rip. Then just put the movie into iTunes and sync it to your iPod. It will then go into the Movies folder on your iPod. Hope this works for you.

    HI, Mike.
For complete information about viewing AVIs and DivX files on Mac OS X, including converting such to QuickTime, see my "Playing AVIs and DivX Files" FAQ.
You can investigate other solutions by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.

  • Tips for converting Brio 6.6 jobs to Hyperion 9.3 Interactive job ?

I'm converting a number of Brio 6.6 jobs to Hyperion 9.3. Most are pretty simple but there are a couple that have almost 80 "Cycles and Actions ". The different cycles are mostly the same. The only difference is in the parameter and the output file name. Any tips for simplfying this? I have the BQY, but it is there is a way to "export" the Brio job and then "import" that job into Hyperion? If I have a query that needs to be run with 80 different parameters and each parameter needs its own report, is my only option to create 80 cycles? Can I have 1 cycle, but tell Hyperion to create a different output file for each parameter?
    Thanks

  • Converting avi files to use on ipod

does anyone know of a free program to convert avi files to use on my pod
i sed to use isquin but it doesnt seem to work anymore- got a video ipod with no videos on it!
    thanks

I have never been able to get Handbrake to recognize many file formats, at least not the version that runs on Tiger.
MPEGStreamclip; you need to export the file. I don't have an ipod so I don't know what format.
My feeling is that you might get more concrete assistance if you asked this on an ipod forum. At least there everybody will likely own one. On the other hand they may therefore also be able to afford the newest computers and tell you to run something on a newer OS.

  • [USEFUL] Howto convert .avi etc to DVD

    Hi guys,
Dunno about anyone else, but I've been looking for ages for a way to convert various movie types into something that can be watched on a DVD player.
I've seen a few scripts about, but nothing concrete. Just got a DVD writer yesterday, and found a very nice HowTo over at the Gentoo forums, here.
I'm going to give it a try today - anyone know how long encoding takes? Because there's no progress bar for CLI, heh.
Hope people find that useful, credit to the author.
    T.

I did this one time for a 3-hour-during movie.
I used transcode for it with meg2enc-plugin and converted the audio to ac3. You may have to upscale the movie to anamorphic 16:9 (all commercial dvd's are in this format I believe) ... What is this or do you know it already ?
anamorphic dvd: Well the total numbers of pixels form a 4:3-image, but the movie is actually 16:9 (the image is stretched vertically). You can use yuvscaler with the bicubic algorithm for this (I believe). I gives very nice results!!! I tried some other algorithms and I have to say the bicubic algorithm is very nice. I couldn't really say the movie was upscaled.
So you have to upscale to (for PAL) 768*576 (I think ....) (no black borders).
How did I do this ? If you want to know this, I don't know immedialty again, but if you're really interested I can spend some time on it ...
Anyway, I highly suggest recompiling transcode and all it's dependencies from source ... and look at the configure-options and sometime add some options .. like with ffmpeg you can see if your cpu supports the cmov-instruction and also ne sure to have -march=<your cpu-type>. Every optimization is welcome !!! For me it is athlon-tbird for athlon thunderbird. Maybe throw an O3 in it. I also have -fomit-frame-pointer. You can set these in /etc/makepkg.conf I believe (or something like that).
Well the movie I transcode from divx or xvid to mpeg-2 (dvd) had a 3-hour duration and it took me 18 hours to transcode it ... I have to say the upscaling doubled the time ... I didn't know what I should do or knowed precisely what anamophic dvd was, so did some things twice ... I really suggest compiling things yourself with as most optimisations as possible! I first didn't optimise the scaling part and then it took 28 hours ...
    I have an athlon-thunderbird 900 Mhz 128 MB ram.
The rest goes quicker ... You don't really haev to make menu's if you want, just specify the mpeg-2-movie-parts in dvd-author and make your dvd-directories that you can burn to dvd. You can also add multiple subtitle-translations if you want.
It takes some while to learn ...
If I remember well ... (I don't know if I transcoded to mpeg-2 before upscaling or not .. although upscaling first is maybe better)
There was also an incompatibilty between transcode and yuvscalers YUV4MPEG2-format. Transcode exported the old format I think ... myabe it's solved now ... else you need to use an older mpjpegtools(for yuvscaler) I think.
(It can also be wise to do a picture pass-through so there are as much audio-parts as picture parts ... to have less chance on desynchronisation I think ... I'm not sure about this though and about the method. You can export the audio to a separate file ... with the -m options(?) of transcode ... but not necessary maybe ... )
Transcode the audio to ac3-format ... that -E 48000 is also important I believe (saw it on your gentoo-link). I suppose players only play some formats only ... ?
so ... to upscale: if you splitted the audio and video already, export the video to yuv4mpeg and specify as outputfile /dev/output and pipe (|) it to yuvscaler. You can then pipe it to mpeg2enc to transclode it to mpeg-2-format. I'm not sure if I did it this way ... you can maybe also use transcode again instead of mpeg2enc. There is also ffmpeg ... but I used mpeg2enc. For mpeg-2-generation use  best-quality-output. I believe the lower the Quantisation-number the better thr quality(every part of the imahe is divied by a number I believe and the lower that number the higher the numbers stay ... lesser 0-values you'll have and so lesser is thrown away I think .... ), but maybe there is a simple option for this.
You can multiplex the audio and video-stream to an mpeg-2stream ... with mplex or so I think.
Then use dvd-author to create the dvd-structure, ....
A divx can be nto so standard or so (or faulty) which can give problems ... the above passthrough for equal audio/video-parts can maybe help ... or use of mplayer pass-through wich can maybe help. It gave me some headaches ...
Well hopes this helps a bit ...

As the title says. I'm looking for a really good program for this, i want really good video quality, and it doesn't matter if the program is for free or if u need to buy it. I'm a windows user.

As I understand it, AVI is a somewhat lower quality to begin with. That said, you can use Quicktime Pro to convert to your specified format. Quicktime Player for Windows is free; the QT Pro upgrade will be required to output to mp4/h.264.
You can get Quicktime via http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

  • Best options for converting keynote slides to DVD?

    Hi:
I'm working on creating a Keynote presentation that will eventually be a loop running on DVD. Exporting the presentation directly to Quicktime and then using Final Cut/DVD Studio Pro. Unfortunately, the quality of the images (as mentioned elsewhere) can look pixelated, especially with text on background.
Any suggestions/links to sites that can help us out on these issues? We're not married to the idea of using keynote either - If there's another method (such as creating the slides as Photoshop and then creating a slide show in DVD SP) we're open to any options that will give us a clean/clear output for playing the DVD.
    Thanks!

Edit your video in FCE/FCP and export it to Compressor.
Use one of Compressor's DVD encoding options in the default setting or make your own custom setting if you know what you are doing.
    Burn it in DVDSP.
You will also hear some other weird and wonderful recipes. The ones I have tested take absolutely ages and result in no tangible improvement. By all means try them but don't be surprised if you waste your time.

  • Pacman.conf NEED tips for totally offline install with DVD repository

OBJECTIVE: after a base install with ARCHBOOT be able to install from DVD repository which contains repo-add database.
My DVD contains the folder from /var/cache/pacman/pkg.
ON the DVD I have the folder 'pkg' at the dvd root level and another folder which has my already built packages fro AUR.
The database called 'custom.db.tar.gz' created with repo-add exists IN the pkg folder on the DVD.
The built AUR packages are in a seperate folder called '_built' at the dvd's root level as well and they are not included in the repo-add database.
I am able to mount the dvd, cd to the pkg folder and use  pacman -Ud to install them though this requires that I type in the full name of the package and I get dependence issues and '*.so' type files not found.
IF I copy all the files from the DVD to the var/cache/pacman/pkg folder I am able to add my local repository to pacman.conf and MUCH more efficient install. I can use pacman -S xorg for example, and I think it finds dependencies even. Can't recall exactly at the moment.
SO: do I need to alter pacman.conf  cache location line and the other lines?
Would I change the 2nd and 3rd lines to get max pacman ability when using DVD repository???
Pointing them to my DVD folder after mounting the dvd
    #RootDir     = /
    #DBPath      = /var/lib/pacman/
    #CacheDir    = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
    #LogFile     = /var/log/pacman.log
I really would like to have as much power and flexibility when using the DVD as the repo.
Can anyone tell me what I should alter in pacman.conf for this.
I am fine if I have to alter the cache location line temporarily if it will give me additional pacman ability.
I have read all the wiki stuff for sure though I'm still a bit in the dark and wanted to ask without typing the many many options.
One big one for me is I don't yet know how to set the SERVER = in pacman.com to look at the mounted DVD and the pkg folder specifically.
    I do mount /dev/sr0  /mnt/cdrom
So what would I put as the SERVER for this in pacman.conf
    SERVER = /dev/sr0   ?????   or   /dev/cdrom  ????    or /mnt/cdrom I think ????
    dunno!
AND I really probably DO have to temporarily alter the pacman.conf  cache location line to get pacman to do dependency installs and let me type short lines instead of the full package name.
THANKS! this one is BIG for me!!!!! :---)

COMMENT WRITTEN LAST: I was about to delete a lot of stuff here though thought to just say sorry for not taking the brain-time to slim it. The bold and white boxed part is the main related quest-ion.
you might find a few useful tools on my site (in my sig), e.g. pkgd if you want to save bandwidth on a LAN --- pbget if you want to easily get PKGBUILDs etc from the AUR and official repos, etc.
WOW Xyne !!!! thanks.  pbget etc. sound very cool.
I used yaourt until very recently. Then went ....hmmmm... should learn about manual building and local repo. Where I'm at now is trying to do as much manually as possible. I think I kinda know what packages I want and there will only be some changes from that in the future. There's maybe 20 packages from AUR for me. [PLUS their dependencies]
Of course: I am doing the repo-add local repositories thing for speed, learning, and as part of my whole 'best practices' growth. Plus it will come in very handy when helping other decide quickly if a barbones mainly wm/ncurses lightweight system is for them.
You certainly spark a question or two!
[AUR and dependencies via yaourt affecting my plans to now go manually]
As these have all ALREADY been installed via yaourt my BIG concern is that I've never found much of a yaourt/cache folder. You see, as you'd know many many times upon installing vai yaourt there's some dependency that may, or I guess, may not be in the standard repos.
After installing these packages via yaourt do the dependencies go into /var/cache/pacman.pkg and is pacman aware of it when I do a repo-add for thecustom database. If so, then all if fairly cool for my plans. I bet there's a few idiosyncrasies about AUR and dependencies maybe.
    -AUR dependency resolution-
Using a custom repo will not really work for general use because you would need to manually populate the database with the dependencies anyway.
I'm fine with manually doing dependencies - though need to know if my yaourt usage ALREADY put the latest dependencies in the pacman cache for AUR unsupported packages AND is there a way with the whole repo-add, local repositry, pacman and aur concpt I'm planning to fine tune to have the dependencies update when I go back to the online repositries? I don't think so based on my usage with yaourt, though can't quite recall.
As I will be enjoying makepkg building the group of packages I nee to get from AUR for the forseeable future (that are not in the main 3 repos of course)
I'm still wondering about the inter-relationships. So: I already have installed and/or built the packages for everything I expect to need mostly.   I never became beyone mediocre with yaourt.  and that fine, though I now have to consider that in a new install I DO have the latest AUR built packages, though will there be the right dependencies ALREADY in my /var/cache/pacman/pkg ?
There's a few things that I'd love to really understand about this. Even if it ends up that dependencies for the AUR packages is always a bit trickier.
QUESTION: right now I am uable to try custom repo from flash stick as it's read only. I'll be googling this one out and am really looking forward to having a flash stick with ARCHBOOT and I gues ONE repo pkg folder and database on it.
NOTE: I will put the custom repo above the stock ones in pacman.conf. I just commented out the others as I was doing all this offline.
I've dumped the dvd as a repo and have switched to a flash stick.  I've extracted the archboot out to a 4 gig flash stick.
dd if=/root/Desktop/archlinux-2009.05-2-archboot.iso of=/dev/sdb  Its read-only at the moment and no matter what I've tried it stays that way. Maybe I need to use the HPutil on it. It definitely isn't writeable so I won't ponder or note observations here save to say that 'm stumped as to how to get files copied to it.
And now what may be the way I'd like to work:    Keep my folder for building packages from aur which is /root/aur. Then after doing the fun makepkg --asroot   or even makepg -i as root to install. Though I'll probably after the build THEN just copy the built packages from my /root/aur to /var/cache/pacman/pkg   and install from there as I DO plan to use the online repos.
I will ALSO copy the file to my USB stick or maybe just sync to it and do a the repo-add thing in   /var/cache/pacman/pkg   and keep the stick as both backup and 'in the ready' reinstaller.
Um, now  could spend an hour editing down the above!!!
    wondrous thanks!

Im running on Windows XP. And I use PSP Video 9 to convert my avfi files to mp4. Now I get them converted and then I import them to itunes. I sync it to ipod but it tells me Ipod could not put it on ipod or something like that. I've tried it with 3 different movies and it all does the same. This never happened before I bought the 2.0 upgrade. Can anyone help?

Try right clicking the item and select the "convert selection for ipod". Something like that. iTunes will convert the video to a format for iPods. This happened to me and I used the iTunes video encoding system to encode the videos to mp4. Try it and please report back results.

  • Comparison for iPod Users: Free Online Converter & DVD to iPod Converter

Compare two channels of obtaining video sources for iPod: one is using online converter, the other is DVD to iPod Converter. After the general introduction of the two methods, I will analyze their advantages and disadvantages for you to choose according to your need.
Part One: Enjoy YouTube (online videos) on iPod
Instruction: a useful website to convert online video freely: http://www.vixy.net/
For vixy, you can just copy the URL of the online video into the “URL” blank of the vixy, then choose the format you want to convert to. Click “Start”. For a short time, the conversion will be finished. You can click the “Download the converted video” to restore the file.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/vixy.jpg
Advantages: Free online video converter. No software to install. Only a few clicks you can get the converted file after a short while. The most important thing is that online video sources are numerous and original, so you can get the first-hand sources in time through it. Some personal DVs are also shared with you.
Disadvantages: They set limitation of the length and size of the video. The classical movies usually are not on line available. Even if existed, the quality of image and sound is inferiors.
Part Two: Enjoy DVD movies on iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPod Classic, iPhone, iPhone (3G), Apple TV
We usually bought classical DVD movies for collection or regular watching later, but DVD cannot be copied directly into iPod for us to appreciate it at anytime and anywhere. On this occasion, we need to convert DVD to the format, video and audio settings (Resolution, Bitrate, Frame Rate, etc) supported by your iPod player.
Instruction: the way to convert DVD to iPod: using Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Converter http://www.aiseesoft.com/dvd-to-ipod-converter.html
Install and run Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Converter
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/download/dvd-to-ipod-converter.exe
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/screen.gif
Step 1: Click “Load DVD” button to import your DVD
Step 2: Use “Profile” drop-down list to choose your output format.
Step 3: Click “Settings” for setting your video parameters.
At last click “Start” button to start your conversion.
    More tips:
    1. Merge into One File
If you want to merge the selected contents into one file you can check the "Merge into one file" option. As default the merged file is named after the first selected file (either a title or a chapter)
    2. Movie Effect
You can set the brightness, contrast, saturation of the video and volume of the audio.
    3. Trim Movie
It can help you to capture the segment of your movie.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/dvd-to-ipod-thread-trim.jpg
    4. Crop Video
You can remove black edge of your DVD movie and get any playing area of the video by using its "Crop Mode" function. You can also select "Zoom Mode" to extrude your video slightly to adjust to your portable devices so you can get the best video quality.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/dvd-to-ipod-thread-crop.jpg
    5. Take Snapshot
It allows you to capture your favorite pictures from your movie.
Advantages: In this way, you can make full use of your DVD: not only in DVD player, but your iPod player. The function of effecting and trimming allows you to clip the segment of the DVD movies complying with your will. You can enjoy more movies taking full advantage of your spare time while relaxing or traveling.
Disadvantages: DVD movies are usually popular, lacking of individualization. You can not share others' DVs.
With these two ways, we can enjoy the pleasure videos bring to us as much as we like. Have fun!

Depending on what update your iPod is, you may need
to dowload YAMB to make sure the videos play well on
your iPod. If you are watching a converted video on
your iPod and it freezes suddenly and this problem
continues, you need to download YAMB and convert the
files already converted with videora iPod converter
with YAMB, this will only take a few minutes.
I hope this helps you out.
Nope. All that a person with that problem should have to do is just update their iPod firmware to 1.1.1 with the newest updater, as that issue has been resolved in the latest firmware.

  • Converting avi.

Im using idvd to convert avi files to dvd, and its taking pretty long. On average three times as long as the movie itself. I was sondering if this was typical, or if idvd just takes an unusually long time to convert the files.

iDVD and iMovie were really designed for DV. Anything else get transcoded with an 'intermediate CODEC' when being brought into iMovie or iDVD.
There are MANY flavors of AVI that don't work at all in the iApps. I've had good luck with VisualHub software in converting such files to DV.
