Tip - Rescuing your photos from iPhoto 11's evil clutches

Don't know if this is well known but it has made me happy so thought I would post
iPhoto11 has a grip on my photo library - and I hadn't properly backed it up before upgrading (wasn't aware then that this was such a poor piece of sware). Nothing opens..spent 5 hours with AppleCare restoring disks and OS and all sorts of things - but at the end of the day it still bounces and hangs.
But wanted to at least recover my photos.
I did a finder search on jpgs and saw the folder construction within the iPhoto library. It appears all the originals are kept in a folder called 'masters'. I then searched on masters to get just this folder. Bingo! ..and am now copying that folder over to a safe place away from iPhoto's evil clutches.

The point is, that not so long ago, it wasn't really necessary to do that with Apple stuff. Advisable perhaps, but rarely necessary.
I lost my first data from a Mac in 1994 when a HD drive died. A back up is, was, and always will be absolutely necessary.
Do you really believe that there was a halcyon day when all apple products worked right out of the box for everyone, everywhere? If you really believe that I've got this bridge in Manhattan I can sell you. Go back to these forums to when iPhoto 6, 7 or 8 were released. Each time there was a chorus of folks who lost data, who thought that iPhoto was getting worse with every iteration and all the other types of posts that you can read here today about iPhoto 9.
I have no problem criticising Apple. I don't think this iPhoto is a particularly compelling upgrade. That said, for me, it was an absolutely flawless processes.
However, criticising Apple here is pointless. If someone comes in with an issue, where does it help to say "It's Apple's Fault". Does it get you one whit closer to solving the issue? Better, I believe, to stress again and again the elements that a User can do to proof his/her set-up. Backing up is the most simple and basic thing that any user can do to protect his/her data. Feeding back to Apple via the Feedback process is something a user can do. Sitting on a bar stool complaining about Apple is a pointless exercise.
It really has to be started very bluntly: any one with valuable data and no up-to-date back up is as wise as any person who motorbikes without a crash helmet or drives without a seatbelt. Neither of these will prevent accidents (and the accidents may be your fault or the other guy's) but they do improve your chances of coming out of unscathed.
To suggest otherwise is foolhardy.

Note - that no internet backup service has been proven to be safe and effective for backing up the iPhoto library - unless you personally have backup uyp an iPhoto library and restored it sucussfuly form one it should not be recommended - a large number of people have lost their photos trying it

  • How do you get your photos from iPhoto into Photoshop?  Am I just duumb

How do I move my photos from iPhoto to Photoshop?  I am feeling really dumb right now.

    Hi Gramo5,
    Please follow the below steps.
In the Finder, navigate to your iPhoto package file. By default, it's located in /Users/[user name]/Pictures, and it's called iPhoto Library.
Control-click the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
A Finder window opens that shows the contents of the package file. The Masters folder contains all of the photos that are in iPhoto.
Control-click the folder named Masters and choose Duplicate.
Drag the folder named "Masters copy" from the iPhoto Library Finder window to your Desktop and then you can import the pictures to Photoshop from the desktop.
Thank you for posting on Adobe Forums.

  • Cannot upload photo from iphoto to facebook on notebook

I have a new Macbook Pro. When signed into Facebook and wanting to upload a photo I am having problems. When I select upload and pick iphoto the application will not open. Any ideas?

Sharing to Facebook directly from iPhoto does not work well right now.
See this fix posted by LarryHN:

If the above does not work, export your photos from iPhoto and then upload them from the Desktop using Facebooks uploader.

  • TS1307 "The email server didn't recognize your username/password combination". This message pops up when trying to mail photos from iPhoto. How do I fix it?

"The email server didn’t recognize your username/password combination." This message pops up when trying to send photos from iPhoto via Mail. I have tried reseting passowrds in both gmail and me.com

Thanks for helping Christeneau.  You helped me too...eventually.  I say eventually because I was puzzled by your 'What does it say behind "email photo's using"'?
I realised the problem was your incorrect use of the apostrophe 's', as in 'photo's using'.
I just could not make any sense of this sentence at all, until I realised that you meant to write, "What does it say behind "email photos using".  What you employed was the possesive use of the apostrophe - a mistake that seems to have become endemic in english speaking nations during the last 10 years or so, brought on by the lack of understanding basic english grammar.  This has come about because of sloppy teaching methods the world over - it's not really your fault.
It's quite simple: The apostrophe 's' should be used as the following examples show:
James's apple, the car's horn, the world's atmosphere. The one exception is 'its shape,' where there is no apostrophe showing posession because that construction has been used as an abbreviation to 'it is', as in 'it's'.
Plurals (more then one) NEVER have an apostrophe!  E.g. CDs, eggs, biscuits, vehicles, UNLESS to show possesion - a CD's label, the biscuit's taste, a vehicle's colour.
    Thanks again for you help.

The username and password are set in the Accounts section of the Mail application. Start Mail, select preferences and select Accounts. Then make absolutely sure that the username, password and outgoing mail server are entered correctly.

  • How do you transfer photos from iPhoto on your Mac to your iPhone?

Trying to figure out how to get photos from iphoto on my mac to my iphone

Hook your phone up to your computer and sync it in iTunes. Before doing the sync, check the Photo tab for your device, and make sure you have selected what photos you want to download. You can do this by Event or Album or a combination of both. Check the appropriate boxes on the Photos tab for what you want to do, and then Sync.
Also, when you first hook up your phone, iPhoto may open automatically to import any photos on your phone that are not yet imported to iPhoto. You can do that first, then go to iTunes to sync the device.
    Hope this helps!

  • How do I import photos from iPhoto in to adobe lightroom?

I've read in several forums that to do this you must go into the finder right click on iPhoto.  Click show package contents.   This pulls up a file named contents.   All of the forums say to either look for a masters file or a original file and copy and paste it to the desktop. This is supposed to then allow lightroom to see the packaged file.   I can't seem to find either file.  Im not sure if its because the forums I've been looking at is outdated or if they just completely changed the name of the file with a newer update.   Either way I tried to do this with a couple of the files I thought might work i.e.. library, mac os.   Nothing has worked.   I am very new to using mac.  I just literally bought this computer yesterday so I really don't want to try to much blindly but being able to edit images with professional software is the whole reason why I bought it.    Pleases Help!!!!!!

Don't do any of that. Just export the photos from iPhoto
    File -> Export
to folders in the Finder. That's the supported way and has the added advantage that you can use the names you've given to your Events or Albums as well.

Or if you want to, you can keep the images in iPhoto and move the Library to an external:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How do I move photos from iPhoto to Pinterest?

I have just downloaded the latest iPhoto. I work a lot with Pinterest, and it would be helpful to be able to move (pin) photos from iPhoto to Pinterest. Since I'm a green horn at this, I'd appreciate a simplistic answer. I thank you!

If you're referring to iPhoto on your iMac then you would export the photos out of iPhoto via File ➙ Export ➙ File Export to a folder on the Desktop.  Then upload to Pineterest as you would normally outside of iPhoto.

  • Deleting photos from iphoto trash can

I can not delete photos from iphoto trash can, I get a notice that they are locked.
these photos were deleted along time ago from the hard drive.
I was surprised to see them, where are they ? so I can delete them,I can't do it from the trash can.

Try the following:download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name in the owner section and Staff in the group section. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Then try emptying the trash bin again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
