Tip: Speakable Items GONE? Recognition Doesn't Work?

If the Speakable Items folder is empty
"/Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Libary/Speech/Speakable Items" you can restore the items by adding an new user account with admin rights.
Before loggin in to the newly added user check the Speakable Items directory once again if the files already showed up(this occured on my mac) if so you can remove the created user before even logging in, if not you must log in and go to the "/Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Libary/Speech/Speakable Items" and copy the files to your main user account witch doesen't have the files.
Recognition doesen't work after the restoration of the files?
Uncheck the Addressbook Command Set or uncheck all the (null) items under the Addressbook configuration.

Here is more detailed help , It helped others too .....
I had the same problem but I fixed it and I think I know how .
Go to home then library find the folder Speech , if it is not there , you log out and create anew test user .
From there go to the home folder , then library , then speech folder , make a copy then put it in the Shared file folder .
Log out and log into your normal user and go to the Shared folder get the Speech folder out and drop it into the Home library folder . Now you have the commands .
It still may not work , next open Speech in System Preferences click on the mic , Speech window opens , click commands ,open speakable items to make sure they are there , then uncheck all of the command sets .
Specially the address book one which I believe it to be the cause of this bug .
Start by only checking the app switching command (example: switch to Safari)
Turn on the speakable items and presto the commands should appear .
It is possible that if your address book is messed up , like info not in the proper fields somehow it affects these commands . But as long as I do not have them all checked it worked again for me .
The tech guy gave me another option which did not seem prudent , like reinstall the OS .
Luckily , thanks to the user friendly design of these machines and the OS which helps make it easier to fix problems , after a week of trying to figure it out , I think I did , at least for me .

I just recently saw a demo about 'speakable items' and the different speech recognition programs built into Leopard -- Amazing!
However I am wondering how you create a new speakable item, I know there is a 'make this page speakable' command, but it doesn't seem to work or I am not exactly sure how to use it properly. For example I want to make an 'Open Gmail' command, how do I go about adding things like that??

I just tried the same thing you did. The file it created is IN the speakable items folder, but it's still not doing it. Maybe my intonation isn't right. AHA, that's it We say Geemail but I'm betting you typed it Gmail which is more like "Gumail". Go into that folder, rename that icon (Geemail, Jeemail, or G mail) and see if it works.

ABAP WebDynpro work item in uwl doesn't work

an ABAP WebDynpro by itself works. But using it in a uwl work item doesn't work:
After clicking the button to start the WebDynpro in a uwl work item a browser opens but the site could not be load.

Your settings seems alright, Can you look at the default trace and UWL log?
U can find UWL log here

and default trace in \server0\log .. please check the current default trace.

Speech recognition doesn't work

Hi. I used to use my iBook's Speech recognition software all the time, but can't seem to get my Macbook's to work. Any thoughts?
I am familiar with it and have got it to work in the past on my old laptops. I also use Text to Speech - I'm not sure why this doesn't work.

Without knowing the specifics of your problem it's hard to really suggest anything. Have you adjusted your settings correctly in System Preferences/Speech, and while in Finder have you clicked on 'Help' in the top menu? If you enter 'Speech Recognition' in the Help searchbox it will provide you with a lot of different trouble shooting tasks/hints.

Status Sync between Portfolio Item and Initiative doesn't work!!

i have done all the configurations, but still sync Item -->initiative not happening but working fine with in Reverse direction Initiative --> item.
My requirement is to have status Sync from Item to Initiative.

Rename Finder Items from Automator doesn't work correctly!

I made a rename finder items in Mac OS X 10.4 by just using rename finder items task and save as a plug in for finder. It was working fine. I tried to use it in 10.5, but it doesn't really change the names. I created a new one or even tried to modify the workflow, but it still not working. Can someone verify the issue? Thank you.

I can verify the issue, but I have no solution. Very frustrating, as I used to batch rename all the time in just the same way.

Dock gone, minimize doesn't work, computer won't respond to "shut down"....

First of all, I'm surely not a computer expert by any means, but one morning when I turned on my computer (iBook) trouble erupted as follows:
Once I logged on, the desktop picture was changing pictures every 2 seconds. I changed it to not switch pictures anymore.
I have my dock on hide at the bottom of the screen and when I went to retrieve it with my mouse, it would not pop up. I figured a restart was in order, but when I clicked on the apple and hit "restart", nothing happened. I clicked on "shut down", but again nothing happened. I also noticed that none of my windows would "minimize" when I hit the minimize button at the top left of the windows. I double-clicked the top of the window and the minimize tab would flash, but the window did not change.
I then noticed that none of my hot corners worked, so I opened up system preferences/dashboard & expose and noticed all my hot corner settings were blank. When I tried to reset them, it would show for a second and then disappeared, but would not take the setting.
One or two things on the fritz would be allright, but all these things tell me something must be seriously wrong?
I've read and read, but still haven't seen anything like this. Do I have to do a backup and re-install of Tiger or does anyone have any ideas that I could try before I go through all that? Any help would be appreciated!

First of all, you should be able to force it to shut down by holding the power button until the screen goes black and it is not in sleep (takes ~5 seconds).
When you boot up again, try checking your library (YOUR USER NAME>Library>Preferences>com.apple.systempreferences.plist
It's hard to interpret, but it might have gotten deleted.
Also check the finder preferences (Library>Preferences>com.apple.finder.plist.
If the library doesn't have much in it, it's possible it was deleted.
Unless you had a backup, you can't recover it.
If the library is still full, and your preferences for other applications are still the same, it's possible that you need to take your mac in for a checkup.
This probably won't help with your specific issue, but it is a good app to have to manage Finder/System. It is called OnyX, and you can get it here.

Querying items in folder doesn't work in SharePoint 2013 (Cloud)

I have 2 folders in a SharePoint List. Every folder contains 2555 items. There is only one column "Title" . I have indexed the "Title" column. The title field contains same values as "Hello" for each and every record.
I am querying the first folder and it throws following exception that
"An unhandled exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.ServerException' occurred in Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.Runtime.dll
Additional information: The attempted operation is prohibited because it exceeds the list view threshold enforced by the administrator."
But If I add a new item with "Title"="World" in both the folders, and query the first folder, putting the condition that get count where "Title" = "World", it works fine and the count returned is "1".
Can anybody please tell me, why I get the exception and what is the fix for that.

My people recognition tells me there are no people or the people are labeled, even though that is incorrect.

Same issue. Renamed certain catalog files. repair and optimize, all to no avail.

Is Speakable Items keeping the Mac awake?

When i activate Speakable Items the mac doesn't seem to want to sleep. Searching showed me to check pmset -g assertions:

This is a bug that arose in Leopard, persisited through Snow Leopard and Lion, and still persists in Mountain Lion. After you start your computer with Speakable Items active, it will obey your Sreensaver and Energy Saver preferences only until you give your first spoken command. After that first spoken command, your computer will no longer obey the Screensaver and Energy Saver preferences you have set. I discussed this with Apple Technical Support back when I was using Snow Leopard and they had no solution. In fact they reproduced the problem on their own machines.
Hey Apple software engineers, why can we not talk to our Macs without clobbering our Sreensaver and Energy Saver preferences? This has gone on far too long.

Speakable Items won't work with my headset

Here's the deal:
When I am using the internal microphone with Speakable Items, everything works fine. (I have to lean in a bit, obviously.) But no matter what I do, my computer won't understand commands spoken through my bluetooth headset. My OS is up-to-date (10.4.10).
The headset (Plantronics Voyager 510) pairs fine with my computer, an iMac G5, and appears to work perfectly well as an input device: the readout in the Sound preference pane shows that the computer can hear my voice through it. In fact, when I go to the "Speakable Items" tab in the Speech preference pane, choose the headset (which appears as "PLT 510"), and attempt to calibrate it, the blue, green, and red readout in the Microphone Calibration window also registers my voice.
But no matter where I set the slider, no matter where I am in relation to the headset microphone, and no matter at what volume or speed I speak, the computer will not recognize commands. It can hear my voice — which I keep in the green zone — but won't understand it.
It's not just in the calibration window: it also won't work when trying to use Speakable Items in, say, the Finder. I've tried changing the input volume for the headset in the Sound preferences, having my room totally silent (including shutting off the air conditioner), calibrating with Speakable Items set to "on" and "off," and weeping and begging. I even rebooted. Nada.
Again, Speakable Items works fine when I am using the internal microphone. The one other difference I found in their behaviors is that, with the calibration slider set to low and the room silent, the internal microphone is steady at the second green bar; but the headset under the same conditions is steady at the sixth bar. In fact, in the case of the headset, moving the slider has no effect at all: it always rests on the sixth bar.
(In other news, the headset won't pair with my iBook G3 [Dual-USB] using the D-Link DBT-120 [Rev. B3]. But I guess that's a different issue altogether.)
Googling, I see plenty of happy Mac users who own my model of headset, but I can't find this problem addressed anywhere. I've looked through the forums here as well.

First of all, Macs do not yet interact in stereo with Bluetooth headsets, though according to rumour this will be available in Leopard (along with everything else).
Have you tried using the Skype Test Call feature? This is one of the easiest ways of listening back to what you record. Come to that, does it record into one of the more standard sound apps (e.g. Garage Band, Audacity, SndSampler)?
My wife has a Plantronics 590 Bluetooth headset, but when it is interacting directly via the Mac's Bluetooth she can only get the microphone to work with Skype and the Finder. And iTunes outputs only the left-hand channel, evenly split between the two channels, and the quality is horrible. If she wants to use it for any other purpose she has to connect it via the Bluetooth 3.5 mm jack adapter plugged into the headphone socket, which cuts out the headset mike as well as the internal speakers.
Though VoiceOver does work through her headset, without using the adapter, the quality is awful and VoiceOver keeps crashing. She can, however, use it for Speakable Items, though she often has to repeat herself. The calibration had to be set very high — 100% mostly.
Have you gone through the full calibration sequence, including getting all the test commands to flash?

In my experience it is simply unusable, SIRI on iOS can do a very good job of my very clear Scottish accent, Dictation even works really quite well on Mavericks for me, but the whole UI and UX of speakable items is riddled with bugs and inconsistencies, it does not work with my USB audio mic, even though Dictation does!! (Yes,I have selected the correct inputs) - it's poorly supported and an insult to the people who need it more than i do.
I got it to work just twice in over 100 attempts, even using the key listening toggle, i had to throw a faux cheesy american accent to get one of those to work !
The attention to the important details has gone down-hill over recent years with Apple, it's all gone a tad superficial and bling imho

Thanks for you suggestion but it didn't work - are there other ways for solving this problem? Or is it because my files that I want to copy and paste onto my hard disk etc are too big? (However there is space on my hard disk and it works on a PC)

Whenever i press "transfer purchased items from ipod", itunes sync's for about 3 seconds, but I still can't install updates on the ipod without itues warning me about purchased items on the ipod, that aren't in the itunes library. I've tried folowing the steps in itunes help, but I can only find a step guide for when you know the specific item that needs transferring, and I donøt know that specific item.
