Tip: Speed up Cover Flow

I recently discovered a usefully feature for speeding up Cover Flow. If it's been posted before apologies in advance.
If you go to View >> Show Options in Finder and switch off 'Show Size' and set 'Use as Defaults' I found that it greatly increases the speed. However, this is only useful of course if knowing the file size isn't critical.

another option is to move the database out of My Pictures....

  • Scroll speed in Cover Flow???

I love the cover flow view in finder and iTunes but I have a the new magic mouse and the scroll speed is just too fast...
I have a hard time landing on the object I want, I just go back and forth back and forth over it...
Is there a way to adjust scroll speed in that specific view?
    Thanks!

    HI,
Open System Preferences/Mouse and check your Tracking setting.
In that specific view? No.. unfortunately not.

  • Cover Flow scroll speed

Is it possible to increase/reduce the speed in which the Cover Flow mode scrolls through items (when using a scroll wheel on a mouse)?
I have a lot of movies, and I like using Cover Flow to preview all of their covers. However, I would prefer it if when scrolling with the wheel on my mouse it wouldn't skip to every 4th/5th movie on the list, and would instead scroll through them one-by-one.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Cover Flow on Windows XP not working, any suggestions?

I recently had a problem with my HP computer (certainly not the first) and had to recover it using recovery disks. Of course I lost everything and when I reinstalled iTunes, the cover flow option wasn't available. I have tried looking everywhere and performing the nesscessary steps to get it to work. It did work before my computer had to be restored. I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded the latest updates. I checked the bit-rate, I guess you could call it and is at 32-bit. I turned up the hardware acceleration to full (it was already up there) and I downloaded a version of DirectX and it still does not work. If someone could help me out it would be much appreciated. I am technology-challenged.
    Thanks!

Try checking your ipod settings, i had an itunes one change on its own once. Go to settings, then general, then rotate. If it says "off", then just hit the center button. If it says "cover flow", then see if it's the orientation sensor by going to the "maze" game if you have it to test it. The circle thing on the menu will probably glitch up/not move if it's the orientation sensor. If it responds normally (rolls/slides in the direction you tip the ipod), then i'm not sure. Try calling their customer service line at 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273) if that happens. Also, if you are walking w/ it with the hold switch off, then it may me that your walking is shaking it enough to shuffle it. That's my theory, anyway.
BTW, are you're sure the ipod's not too flat for the sensor to register the rotation? I've done that before. It'll register at about a 45 degree angle.

  • Minimized Cover Flow on Bookmarks page and now can't get it back

On the Bookmarks page, I moved the Cover Flow section up so that it disappeared. When I tried to show it again by moving the cursor from the top to bottom of the area is originally displayed, the CF section fails to reappear. How to get it back?

Good gracious. I was able to do that to myself in the course of seeing if I could replicate the problem.
After some swearing and cursing, I managed to get the Cover Flow back showing again in Bookmarks by rebuilding my com.apple.Safari plist file, as per the instructions in the following user tip:

  • Photos distorted when opened in preview, yet ok in cover flow

    Hi
I previously posted this question which got moved to the iPhoto section, but its NOT an iPhoto issue: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2619921&tstart=0
Having purchased a new camera (Sony DSC2000) the first time I used it the photos were fine...now ever since they appear intermittently distorted, or missing altogether. I tried creating a basic new user account as a test with the same results. Help!!

    Hi
Thanks for the tip. Yes the problems happen regardless of the location or user account. As an example when opening the jpegs in Preview the log shows the following messages repeatedly:
    Macintosh.local Finder[115] <Error>: CGImageCreate: invalid image size: 0 x 0.
    10/12/2010 18:59:10 [0x0-0xb00b].com.apple.finder[115] Fri Dec 10 18:59:10 Macintosh.local Finder[115] <Error>: CGImageCreate: invalid image size: 0 x 0.

And when viewing the distorted jpegs in cover flow in Finder:
Macintosh.local quicklookd[727] <Error>: Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment
    10/12/2010 19:25:22 com.apple.quicklook[727]

Any ideas gratefully received. Short of anything else I reckon I will try an erase and fresh install of Mac OS X 10.5 and see if that sorts things.

  • Ever since iTunes 10.2.1 the cover flow doesn't work

Whenever I switch to view cover flow it just removes the whole top section where the Play, FF, Volume buttons etc are...the cover flow doesn't even show up. Which is pretty lame because the -only- reason I am using iTunes is because of the cover-flow. If I wanted to see my album artwork stacked vertically I'd just use WMP instead of apple's insanely awkward interface.
Any tips on what I can do here? I thought 10.2.2 would fix this but alas :-(

Malware can cause digital signing issues, I would run a malware check with the free version of MalwareBytes:
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/
After that, the is a Microsoft fixit for:
The software you are installing  has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows   XP. (Tell me why this testing is important.)
This software will not be  installed. Contact your system administrator.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
It might be worth trying it.

  • Cover Flow & Quicklook acting weird?

Leopard and its features are amazing!
Coverflow & stacks are great! One small thing that i notice though.
I find that when I do use coverflow sometimes, when I see a pdf file, I am able to flick through the pages - in cover flow(for other multi page documents like .doc files I cannot?).
When I run quick look (press space bar) to preview through the pdf though, it makes me have to scroll down through the pages ( just like the other text documents), not flick through like i did in cover flow? Shouldn't it allow you to flick through the pages by pressing the arrows?
Also it seems that some previews of files don't render at all, on my stacks, some icons only show the default icon.
Hopefully Apple fixes these small bugs.

oOo cool tip! thanks for that!
I don't think it works for MS word files though and excel spreadsheets.
Especially my existing word & excel files. It works fine for pdfs in coverflow though for some reason? except when you actually quicklook.
All I can hope for is more functionality and fixes in the next software update I guess.
Didn't Jobsy say something about plugins for quicklook to allow for other file types?
Like say would you think the ability to quicklook a raw photo file?

  • Ipod cover flow, some albums show up after the letter Z

Hi all, got a strange problem.
I have my ipod set to sort by artist in the cover flow.
However, some albums pop up after the letter Z.
There are over 1400 cd's on it, but a 30-something do this.
I tried adding "artist sorting"tag to the albums, but it still shows.
Trust by Elvis Costello for example shows up after the z, while there is no reason at all to do that according to the info.
Anyone who has any tips, escept deleting the albums and adding them again in the hope the problem disappears ?

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
The albums that appear after Z will be marked as compilations. See my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist for details.

  • Cover flow on ipod classic 160gb 6th gen

I was just given an ipod classic 160gb 6th gen, it the previous owners music on it, so I hooked it up to itunes & restored it & updated it to factory settings & put my name on it. I noticed in cover flow mode, that albums are doubled, one for the entire album, then the album cover again for individual songs. when I go to album view, the albums show up ok, there are no double ups there. I also notice when I scroll down to the now playing with the split screen, it comes up blank with no cover art. I had an 80gb 5th gen ipod & everything seemed ok. I wiped it clean with a restore as well to start fresh. It took about an hour & a half to sync over my music library from my external hard drive to my new 160 gb 6th gen ipod. It seems to play ok, so far, I just got it today, & I have been playing it on & off to try it out.
I am running itunes 9.0.1.8. Also when I plug in my ipod, itunes ops up with an update message for me to update, I click ok for the update, but nothing seems to happen, so I do not know if itunes has updated or not.

Ok, should I try the trialing X, for those persistent multi covers that do not respond to adjusting the track names as first suggested? I went to your tips page & saw the graphic for that. Is it ok to just leave the Xs in or must they be removed?
iTunes tries to be "smart" and only updates the tag if it thinks you've changed something. Adding the X is a temporary measure to force iTunes to acknowlege that something has changed and thereby hopefully merge the album. Once it's done you can get rid of the unecessary trailing Xs.
I also looked at your image for handling multi discs, will this group multi discs together in cover flow?
    Yes, that's the point.
& when one is playing a multi disc set, will the ipod just go straight to the next disc (disc 2) in playback as though it were one single album?
    Yes.
or will playback stop at the last track of disc 1 & then one would have to select disc 2 to play.
    No.
Will the multi disc set still come up as 2 different discs to selct to play? I may not want to start with disc 1.
No. You can always chose which track to start playing.
One of the albums I was having trouble with multi covers was part of a 2 disc set, disc 1 was credited to the main artist, but had guest artists for 1/2 the tracks, disc 2 was by the same artist with no guest artists. I have now gotten disc 1 to show as a single cover in cover flow by checking off part of a compilation in the info panel, but it does not appear next to disc 2 in cover flow.
Again setting *Part of a compilation" is the wrong approach. Set *Part of a compilation* to No, put your guest artist info. into the track titles (or any other scheme you choose) and make sure that the Artist value is consistent for all tracks.
on an off note, I notice when I press my ipod button or navigate any of its features, there is a slight grinding noise, I can hear the hard drive, when I bring it close to my ear, it sounds like a chewing mouse is this ok/normal to hear slight noises? it seems to be functioning alright. It is pretty responsive.
Yes, the noise from disc activity is normal. My iPod lives in a silcone sleeve which probably muffles it a bit and most of the time I'll have already have music playing so I'm rarely conscious of the noise of hard drive activity but it is there.

  • Cover flow is like having two toilet seat lids

I love my iPod Touch. I find the sound quality to be an improvement over my previous iPod and the other features useful. But I purchased the device with the priority of listening to music, and I find it cumbersome if not annoying to have to constantly manipulate around cover flow to get to music.
Is there a way to disable this clumsy feature? Thanks for any tips. So far it's been a frustrating experience.

That's clumsy. What I'm looking for is to not have to take unnecessary steps to reach the music.

  • Cover flow vs now playing

I've had my iPod touch for about a day now and in general I am impressed with the technology. Like others I use my iPod in the car and have contemplated cover flow landscape mode as the default orientation. However I've noticed that cover flow does not stay in sync with what's playing when the playing song leaves the album displayed onthe flow. Just tip it up and back to landscape and its play until the next album. You can guess how quickly it gets out of sync when it I'd on song shuffle.
Anyone else? Perhaps apple can fix this in the next code release. Along with loosening their tight controls on what we can do on the device.

I'm with you Mike. I'd love to be able to hit Shuffle Songs, sit my Touch in the little plastic cradle thingy, and have Cover Flow change when the song changes (just like it does in iTunes).
The album art stays in sync in portrait mode but you can't sit the Touch in the plastic cradle in portrait mode because the earphones jack is on the bottom.
I tried sitting it in the dock that came with my 4th Gen iPod and hooking the earphones into the line out jack but found that there was no way of controlling the volume (maybe I need a newer Dock?).
So at the moment I'm listening to Silverchair and looking at Jet. Hmmm.

  • Possible video problems in iTunes 8.1 [no grid or cover flow views]

I had posted this problem under iTunes, but mentors there suggested instead I connect it to a video problem
*"...my video drivers or other related problems I've had over the last two months with the iPhoto...*
*Ah, didn't know about that. Try re-posting it as a video problem in one of the other forums. It begins to look less like an iTunes problem."*
So, the problem is that I cannot get any other view in iTunes other than LIST. The grid view is completely non functional and is grayed out. The cover flow only shows as a black screen without any logo (such as the familiar music symbol). I never had this problem in iTunes until I upgraded to 8.1.
It is curious that when I select tunes from my **own playlists*, the grid view appears both in the "view choices" and its respective icon is NOT grayed out. That does not happen when I select genious playlist: then the icon is grayed out and there is a grayed out "View choice" in the pull down menu. The same problem exists in my own playlists whenever I select cover flow, however. It is always black without any images or logos displayed. It's an active choice in the pull down menu, and you can click on its icon...but nothing appears.

I can't tell what this processor speed is; where do I discover that? Under "About this Mac," it says I have *_512 MB SDRAM_*; is that the answer that denies this functionality?
*"The grid view is completely non functional and is grayed out. The cover flow only shows as a black screen without any logo (such as the familiar music symbol)."* Your video card may not support cover flow.
    Carolyn
Perhaps, but this is not obvious to me. As I posted earlier, iTunes demonstrated cover flow capability in its prior version. Did it change once 8.1 and now 8.1.1 came out?

  • Can coverflow or cover flow be sped up?

I have an 8-core, 8 GB machine. With one Finder folder open to a directory of images, set to cover flow (or coverflow) mode, moving from one image to the next with the up/down cursor keys results in first, a blurry version of the image, and second, a few moments later, a sharpened version.
During this process, my CPU meters are minimally active; certainly there is no indication of heavy work going on. But coverflow can't keep up with even the most gentle viewing rate... tap, tap tap and it's way behind. This seems ridiculous to me. I can browse images at many times this speed with no intermediate "blurry" render in many other applications - why is finder so pokey?
And more importantly, is there a way to speed it up? It's really kind of driving me nuts.

I don't experience any latency at all, in either Quick Look, Cover Flow, or Finder.
Have you tried creating a new account and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.)
Open System Preferences > Accounts > "+" make it an admin account.
If this works, then log back into your problem account and go to Users/yourname/Library/Preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Then, restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
If that fix it and the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your Finder features work correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving/Users/yourname/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
