TiPB 500Mhz and Sonnet Aria Extreme

Help!! I have a TiPB without an AirPort card. I picked up a Sonnet Aria Extreme card from We Love Macs (WLM). Right now, I am actually trying to get the second one to work. The first was exchanged because the Sonnet tech person determined it was faulty after directing me to throw away some extensions, uncheck some items in a Internet Connect dropdown, and restart. I haven't been about to get either one to connect to my AirPort Extreme Base Station. I am running 10.3.9 and have AirPort 4.2 installed. The card shows up in my menu bar, but isn't identified as Sonnet; it is just powered "on". AirPort is on. The power light on my card will turn on, then go off. When I click on the AirPort icon, it turns on, then goes off after a few seconds. There are no networks listed in the AirPort menu. On my iMac desktop, I have my network and several networks from my neighborhood listed. The link light will come on and flash briefly when I click on "Create a Computer-to-Computer Network". I am very frustrated right now (this has been going on for over a month with the ordering and exchanges, etc.) I even configured an identical PB (my "work" computer) to match my personal PB. Both behave the same way with the Aria card installed. Sonnet wants to believe that both cards couldn't be bad. It seems strange, but I think I've gotten 2 bad cards. Do you think WLM has a batch of bad cards? Should I scrap this plan, return the Sonnet, and just by an AirPort card?

Hi, macbailey68, and welcome to Apple Discussions. My own experience with Sonnet Aria Extreme cards in Tibooks is that they Just Work — no fussing or finagling or discarding of files required. This is based on using my daughter's Aria Extreme card both in her 867MHz Tibook, which doesn't have an Airport card, and in my 1GHz Tibook, which does, as well as recommending the same card to a couple of friends with Tibooks who found it extremely simple to set up and start using.
If you've had two cards that even Sonnet's own tech people can't get to work, I have to believe both are faulty, unlikely as that sounds. But networking isn't my personal strength, and I don't use an Airport base station, so just to make sure there isn't some little trick we're all overlooking, I recommend that you repost your question in the Airport Extreme forum and let the real gurus over there tell you exactly how your base station and network settings should be configured. The Sonnet card should work exactly the same as an Airport Extreme card, since it contains the same Broadcom chipset, and it requires no extra software. Good luck!

  • Titanium G4 / OS 10.4.9 / Extreme (n) / Sonnet Aria Extreme card problems!

    Hi,
I have a Titanium G4 laptop running OS 10.4.9 and two flat screen iMacs. The iMacs are linking to the net via a new Extreme (n) base station and work just fine.
I have just purchased a Sonnet Aria exteme card (802.11g) for the Titanium and set the base station to be 802.11b/g compatible via the airport utility. This should enable the new card to link to the base station but I cannot get this to work. For some reason it will not pick up the base station eventhough the laptop is right next to it. I know it's working because it picks up someone elses wireless network which I guess is via a diff. type of base station.
Can anyone give any advice on why this is, if they know a workaround or if the Extreme (n) base station isn't really that compatible?
    Cheers

  • Aria Extreme Can't see Airport Network

I have a Lombard PowerBook that I am fixing up for my daughter to use. I put a new 40 gig HD in it and loaded up 10.3. After that I plugged it into my home network via ethernet and ran software update.
I originally bought a Wavelan PC Card for accessing my Airport Extreme network, but found that it does not support WPA security and that's pretty important. I then picked up a Sonnet Aria Extreme card and, after updating the Airport drivers to version 4.2, I got the machine to recognize the card as an Airport card and thought I'd be able to connect to my network.
Unfortunately I am having trouble and cannot connect. The Airport turns on, but it does not see my network in Internet Connect. I do not have a closed network and in fact I can see my network as well as my neighbor's network in the Airport menu of my iBook, while sitting next to the PowerBook.
I have confirmed that I have the correct security settings (WPA2 Personal) and password on all machines. I also, as mentioned, have had my iBook, with its built-in antenna right next to the PowerBook, so I'm pretty sure it should be able to see the network as it is in range.
Please let me know if anyone else has had such a problem and has found a solution.

if the computer running ARD is on the wireless network then it'll see any clients on the same network. if the computer running ARD is on a wired network and a wireless network exist on that wired network, you will not see any of the computers on the wireless network. you can forward the required ports to one specific computer on the wireless network on the router.
to control any other computers on the wireless network, you'd have to install another licensed copy of ARD on the computer that you've forwarded the ports to and then open up ARD on that with your main admin mac to then control the other computers on the wireless network. thus you'd be running ARD on computer 'A' to control computer 'B' and then use computer 'B', from computer 'A' to control all other clients.

  • Trouble getting Power PC G4 to connect to my wireless network (sonnet aria)

I have an existing wireless lan. Wanted to move the router to a more central location and bought a Sonnet Aria Extreme Wireless PCI for the G4 desktop. The PCI card popped in just fine but I can't get the G4 to connect.
The instructions that came with the PCI card described the procedures but I've followed them and still can't get the G4 to see the network. Tested with a laptop and the signal is great.
The router is a Linksys WRT54G. I've made sure it is broadcasting the ssid.
Before I post the results I'd like to have some help on what the major steps need to be. Do I need to set up an Airport base station? Do I just set up the network via system preferences?
If someone can give me a start point I can post back what I'm seeing.
    Thanks
    Tom

There is absolutely no reason for an AirPort base station.
Since this is a non-Apple solution you will need to follow the Sonnet Aria instructions on what software to use and how to configure the settings to join your wireless network.

  • Sonnett Aria not seeing Airport in Lombard G3

    Friends,
I have a Power book G3 Lombard bronze keyboard. 333Mhz 512 mg memory. OS 10.4.9 using AIR PORT 4.2 utility. I purchased a Aria extreme Sonnett. for wireless internet. The MAC sees the card but will not see the airport. The card icon is in the upper right and the light is on. I have tried to delete the existing airport configuration as instructed by Sonnet but that did nothing. It just will not see my airport or any WIFI . Can this card pick up other WIFI ?? Any suggestions?
I have an old Skyline card when I was on OS 9. I inserted the card and of course it did not see airport. However, when I then inserted the new Aria IT DID SEE the airport. But after I removed the card and used the MAC in a wired environment for a couple of days it never worked again. It goes on but does not see the airport. So, the card works unless I screwed something up inside the card.
    Mike

If you placed it into the PC-card slot, I don't believe it is supported by Apple in that configuration. Third-party cards, such as Orinoco or Lucent cards ARE supported in OS 9, and can be supported in Mac OS X with an Open_Software driver.
The Apple card in the PS-slot has no antenna, so you would need to do something about that as well. The Lucent or Orinoco cards have an antenna built into their thick outer ends.

  • Pismo No Longer Sees Aria Extreme Card

    Hi All,
I've been happily using Sonnettech's Aria Extreme 54 card in the CardBus slot of my Pismo for a couple of years now. It's been working great. But suddenly it isn't seeing the card anymore. It shows no airport card at all. I've shut down and restarted several times but it makes no difference. Internet connect has Airport greyed out, and Airport Setup Assistant doesn't see any card either, so I can't do anything. Is this something I'm going to be able to fix? Any ideas welcome.
    giles

I've tried shutting down and reinstalling the card several times. No change.
I just tried out a card that I KNOW is working, and it doesn't work in my Pismo either--so it's definitely the computer. I don't think it's a bent pin because I almost never remove the card, so it would be hard for one to bend and not the others.
Questions is, Is it hardware or software? I've been having a lot of hard drive problems that I've posted about in another thread, so I don't know if it's related to that.

How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue?

  • Using Epson Workforce 40 with Snow Leopard and an AirPort Extreme

Hi. Long night working on this but I figured something out, that might help others out there in the same/similar situation.
I have an Epson Workforce 40, and an AirPort Extreme. I had previously set up the EPWF40 (Epson WorkForce 40) before I had installed Snow Leopard. After installing Snow Leopard, the printer would not work and would not be recognized by my MBP 15". The document would just hang and I would have to force quit the printer or delete the document.
Bullet points on how I made it work:
    - the most important thing is to have the printer recognized by the router and have an IP address installed and registered first, then you can install the Epson Mac EasyPrint software and "find" the printer over your wireless network
    - Goto:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?oid=108743&prodoid=6307 5463&BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Downloads&platform=Macintosh&x=28&y=3
and download the Epson EasyPrint v3.10 file called: "epson12433.dmg"
    - Unfortunately, Epson does not make software to "install" the printer to the router for Snow Leopard
    - I re-installed the printer to the router using my wife's HP laptop and the original CD that came with the EPWF40.
    - Follow the instructions on the CD for the install for "First Time" setting up the printer.
    - After following the original instructions from the CD on her PC, the router assigned a new IP address to the printer, and the printer was "connected" to the router wirelessly
    - Then, on my MBP running Snow Leopard, I ran the dmg file downloaded earlier from the Epson website.
    - After running, go to the printer/fax preferences, click the "+" sign and add a new printer.
    - As long as you are connected wirelessly to the router, under default, your mac should "find" the Epson printer. It is called something like "EPSON5A2EAA". There should be at least one, if not two options.
    - One of the options should be "EPSON5A2EAA Bonjour" and the other "EPSON5A2EAA IP". Click on one, install it, and then go back and click on the other and install it (just to be sure).
    - You will not be able to use the standalone Epson Apps installed from the DMG, however, the printer preferences for the epson, will be available through the printer preference boxes when you go through the system preferences.
It didn't make any sense at first for me either. Once I understood that:
    - you can't install the printer from a Mac to your router
    - after the printer is installed and linked with your router, your Mac can find it and use it
...I was able to complete the installation and have a fully functional wireless network printer.
Feel free to drop me a question. I'm just glad I was able to make it work.

I installed Snow Leopard but my Epson WorkForce 500 printer is not compatible. I saw an article about loading Rosetta and this would solve the problem. I can't find the article and I have never used Rosetta.
    Actually, you have.
Rosetta was incorporated into both Tiger and Leopard. But it was invisible, of course. Snow Leopard is the first OS that offers the choice of whether to install it or not.
Any suggestions on how I find the recent article or make my printer work with Snow Leopard?
Don't know about the "recent article", but you can install Rosetta by inserting your Snow Leopard DVD and clicking on the Optional Installs package. When the configuration choice window comes up, just check Rosetta alone and carry on.
    Good luck with it!

I just purchased an extreme.  I have an express.  The sales guy recommended setting up a hot spot with the express and use the extreme as a base station.  What does he mean and how do I do this?  What are the advantages?  How do I set this up?????

I think he means to set up the main extreme as the main router or "main base station", and then use the express to "extend" the network.
You can look up the manual for your express here for more details:
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/
Extend the range of your network by adding AirPort Express to your existing AirPortExtreme or AirPort Express wireless network (this is called a Wireless DistributionSystem, or WDS). "
Extending the Range of an Existing AirPort Extreme or
    AirPort Express Network
You can extend the range of an existing AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express wirelessnetwork by setting it up in a WDS. Wireless computers can connect to the network andshare the Internet connection, share files, and play network games. If you connect yourAirPort Express to your home stereo, computers on your wireless network can useAirTunes to play music on the stereo from iTunes. If you connect a USB printer to yourAirPort Express, all of the computers on the network can print to it.
n Open the AirPort Setup Assistant on a Macintosh, or the AirPort Express Assistant on acomputer using Windows XP. Follow the onscreen instructions to extend the range ofyour AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express network.
Note: Extending the range of a network using WDS may reduce overall networkperformance.

These innovations have DRASTICALLY improved both softwares immensely.
Now if I could only get the Gods to look down beneath their feet...

Let me add that I didn't want to split hairs, it's just that "General Midi" is a technical term, it means (among other things) that you have a set of 128 instruments that are specified in a standard. That's the reason why you can click on a midi file in your web browser or open it with QT Player, and it will sound approximately like the creator wanted it to sound - the drum track won't play on a piano etc.
On the Mac, Quicktime provides this set of instruments. It's not very great sounds, but it's okay, and it could have been easily integrated into GB, I have no idea why they didn't. If you have SoundFontSynth, which allows you to use banks of soundfonts, you can select the Quicktime GM instruments for your GB tracks.

Airport Express (the small Airport device, which is the only one with an audio connection) works through Airtunes, which only works with iTunes. The computer won't send ALL system sound to the Airport. If you actually want to send sound outside of iTunes, use Airfoil.

I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too. Any ideas? I'm guessing the only way is to do what I've seen in these community pages which states that it can be done but it will drop the bandwidth by 50%. Thoughts?? Thanks!

The Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G was one of the very few routers said to be compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS (Wireless Distribution System) settings.
The info that I have on file indicates that only the WRT-54G versions 4 and under were compatible, so that would be one bridge to cross.
Even if you find that your Cisco/Linksys might be the right version, Apple never published instructions on how to configure the Express devices with other manufactures, so users were left to their own devices to try to figure out how to get things working. Apple's instructions to connect to other Apple devices are in the link below:
    WDS network
If you were hoping to use 2 Express devices in this type of configuration...even if it works...the bandwidth penalties will be extremely severe.
The first Express drops the bandwidth (and speed) on the entire network in half and the second halves everything again. So, the result, in effect would be a "g" wireless network running at 25% speed. Few users would consider installing this type of network.
At this point, it becomes one of those things where the fact that you might be able to do something does not mean that there would be much value in doing so. But, it is your decision to decide if you want to try to proceed.

How many wireless devices can connect to an Express which is wired and extending an Extreme network?

That is great news I have A1392s. One more question...
If I have an Airport Extreme setup as a router and feeding internet from a modem/ I wire an express (A1392) and "create a wireless network" the airport utility puts the express into bridge mode automatically.
How many wireless clients can I connect simultaneously to the express?
How many wireless clients can I connect simultaneously to the extreme assuming I am using all 50 at the express?
In other words, Could I have 50 wireless clients connected to each device simultaneously giving me a total of 100 wireless clients?
