does anyone know if there is a book available that shows you tips and tricks in final cut pro or express(e.g. effects such as bringing out specific colors, whilst everything is still black and white,)

There are so many of us willing to give tips away for free...because we care about our fellow editors, and don't feel threatened by them. Tips are tips, then help your workflow. Whenever I found some nifty Avid trick I'd call my friends up and go "guys...guys! Guess what I just figured out?" and they'd do the same. These are all workflow tips...free for all.
For stuff like how to do advanced motion graphics or how to use advanced functions in FCP, then yes, paying for Kevin Monahan's book or any peachpit press book is cool.

I am using Logic Pro 8, I interface with a firepod, got a new firestudio project, but I can only access 10 tracks at a time to record enable, anyone?

I know the two interfaces have synced, but I just can't seem to pull up more than 10 tracks in the input channel drop down. If any one has any idea , I would love to hear about it.

Hi, I am Java Developer !

1. SUN CERTIFIED DEVELOPER FOR THE JAVA[tm] 2 PLATFORMComprises a programming assignment and a follow-up exam. The assignment requires a significant amount of work (at least a month) and focuses on developing a Swing GUI, a simple database and network connectivity. You also have to document your design and reasons for your choices. Where the Programmer Certification tests your knowledge of the language ("human compiler"), the Developer Cert tests whether you understand how to design and code.

How to Superimpose Video without adjusting Opacity?

Hi guys, so I am really new to adobe premiere elements..and video editing in general.
What I want to do is superimpose two videos on each other so that it looks as if were happening at the same time.
For an example, I don't know if any of you have watched communitychannel on youtube, but she does it all the time.

It doesn't look like she adjusted the opacity or anything, and thats the effect I want to achieve.
How do I do this?

She is using Chroma Key to create this effect.
She shot one video of herself in front of a green screen, then used Chroma Key to make the green background transparent so that she could overlay it on another video of herself.
I walk you through how to do this, step by step, in the "Cool Tricks & Hot Tips" book for Premiere Elements. (You may also be able to find more information on it online.) It's not a terribly complicated process -- but you need to get the details right.

Aperture and blurb

Is there still not a plug-in for using Blurb with Aperture? If not can someone please direct me to the best way to use Aperture and then Blurb as I would like to try their publishing as well As direct via Aperture (they have more options)
Also, re the various PDF export possibilities - were can I find the info on all of them and why is there not an 'Export as Adobe pdf" now? I am sure ther used to be

PE-11 Rolling Text Question

In PE-11, I am trying to adapt Steve's Cool Trick #48 from his "Cool Tricks & Hot Tips" book for an HD (1920x1080) project where the text appears in the middle of the screen and then rolls down wide to bottom of the screen. I am having a hard time recomputing the corner pin properties for the HD screen where the text scrolls down (not up) and does not get inverted. What should the corner pin properties be for the UR, UL, LR, and LL?
I forgot to say that Cool Trick #48 is the "Star Wars" style rolling title that starts wide at the bottom of the screen and then scrolls up and "disappears in the distance" in the upper-third of the screen.

Hi Steve - thank you for the reply. I am using HD 1920x1080. The effect that I am trying to create is text appearing (small) in the middle of the screen and then rolling out to wide to the bottom of the screen so that it appears as if you are flying over the text as if it is appearing in the distance and rolling to you (somewhat like the star gate effect in the movie "2001" when Dave goes through the monolith and text and math symbols are scrolling by him). Is there a trick to make the text scroll in that fashion?
The text will be a series of one-liners with blank space between each of the lines, it will not be paragraphs. The reader will not get dyslexia while viewing the video
BTW - I use both of your PE books - Guide and Cool Tricks - they are very useful.

Large file slow loading

For a large project that takes a long time to load from the
Internet, is there a way to configure or set things up so that the
movie starts playing while the balance is loaded?

The connectpreloader, didn't do anything different, but when
I tried the 'defualtpreloader' it did what I wanted, it started the
movie at 60% loaded... Cool.
My first checking on this problem was to look in your Tips
book that I bought a couple of weeks ago, since you do cover so
much that isn't in the documentation... next time you update it,
you should add this, as I'm sure that many people are frustrated by
how long it takes their movies to load and this mitigates that
concern. BTW, your Tips book is great and well worth the money.
Who do I email at Adobe, if you know who would be
appropriate, to try and get them to have someone like you write
their documentation for Captivate. I've been in the Software
Publishing business for about 30 years and I've never run across
such pitiful documentation as Captivates. MOST of the features and
options in the program aren't even referenced. As an example, this
preloader capability isn't discussed anywhere.
They are lucky that you monitor this forum and provide such
GREAT help for people.

Uploading for prints: are files resized automatically?

My files are >20 MB, but I just want some postcards etc. Will iphoto automatically resize, or will the upload go at max resolution, in which case the upload is going to bog down unless I go to someplace with a faster connection. Thanks for any tips.

Books, calendars and cards are converted to PDF files at 300 dpi for uploading and printing. I'm not sure about prints but the iPhoto prefs indicate that prints are set at 300 dpi max. Don't know if that's for local printing only but I don't think so.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

Tips for Using Pages to Write a Short Book?

Hello- I really don't wanna go back to Word.
My needs are pretty simple. A short book in 5.5 x 8.5 format (standard, right?).

Ominous tip in O'Reilly book

On page 184 in the Gallery widget section of the O'Reilly book there is an omonous tip that reads "TIP- You can't make a Gallery full screen only."
I have been using the gallery widget to insert full page illustrations for a picture book. It works and it works in Preview on the iPad, but will that cause an issue when submitting the book? Should I just drag my pics from my desktop? Thanks

Gallery widgets can't go inline.
When I read the TIP in your original post, I interpreted it to mean that you can't put in a Gallery widget and then restrict it to only full-screen display. In other words, all 3 widget display modes (window, full screen w/text, full screen w/o text) will be available to the reader, not just one.

Newbie needs help - doing a phone book - tips needed

I am a graphic designer, been working daily on Illustrator /Photoshop for years, I have InDesign CS3 installed on my computer (PC) and never worked on it, until today. I have a project of doing a phone book for a local organization.
There will be ads, and names/addresses and phone numbers (just like a yellow page book).
The names/phone numbers have been given to me in an Excel document. With over 3000 lines, 5 columns (name, address, street name, postal code and tel number).
MY QUESTIONS:
1- How do I put the Excel document inside InDesign? I want all pages to follow. If by any chance I add a name, I want the whole document to slide down one line..Or if I increase/decrease the font, I want the number of page to readjust automatically...you follow me?
As I said, I am a newbie in this program, so please give me the step by step on how to do this.
There will be ads and tabs added through the contents, and I do not want this to become a nightmare...
2- With past experience you may have had on similar projects, any other tips that I should think about before starting?How do I create an automatic page layout (numbers on the bottom, line over, etc)?

Page numbers are comparatively easy; check out the sections in the help file about page numbering and master pages.
"Automatic page layout" is not really what ID does, so you're asking a very complicated question. "Line over" is called a "rule" in ID, and there's a few places where you could set that up. However, the best place is in the Paragraph Styles menu. You should get to know this menu very well before you even think about starting work.
This is not something that can be easily described in a step-by-step programmatic fashion; or, rather, it can, but you don't yet have the vocabulary to implement those steps. So, if I tried to describe the step-by-step instructions for using smart reflow (another help entry you should read, as that will answer 30% of your questions about having additional pages added on the fly), and you followed them to the letter, you'd still find yourself back here asking questions. Or perhaps accidentally munging your document according to a forum regular's instructions, simply because the forum-ites can't easily look over your shoulder as you work. However, if you already have a background in text manipulation in Illustrator, you'll be able to pop over the steepest part of the initial learning curve with comparatively little effort.
So...

I'm pretty sure that Smart Reflow will handle this for you, but I've always found it to interfere with my working style, so I avoid it. I typically make whatever changes I want to the text, and then quickly go to the end of the document to see if I have text overflow. If I do, it's a very small number of keystrokes & clicks to add new pages, apply master pages to 'em, flow in new text, and so on.

Some more useful terms with which to search the help file: anchored objects, text wrap. As you can see, most of us responding to your post are advising that you study some before you start building your document. If you have significant Illustrator/Photoshop experience, you're not going to be completely lost. However, ID's text manipulation tools dwarf those of Illustrator, so you may be in for a bit of an unpleasant awakening if you expect ID to handle text with the automagical interference that you'd find in Word or Powerpoint or Publisher.

As the error message says, you computer cannot connect to the network.
It is difficult for us to give advice since we do not know your network setup. Try the network diagnostics utility:
Open System Preferences -> Network ;
At the bottom of the window is a button labelled "Assist me", press it, then in the drop down panel press "Diagnostics" and inspect your network status.
