Tips for Recording Mesa Boogie Stack

The guitar player I'm working with now has the best rig I've recorded so far, full Mesa Boogie setup, Triple Rectifier head, 2X12 open back cab and 4X12 cab. I typically mic at the standard 45deg off axis, ~1-2" away from the cone with a 57 and a Blue Baby Bottle. The Baby Bottle overloads even with the phantom power off in front of a really loud guitar amp, so I'm just looking for any mic techniques that might help capture the Mesa Boogie sound. The band is going for something like the Mars Volta. Thanks everyone, the holy grail of vocals was great, I figured there are a few of you that know a little about rock guitars too...

usually the best spot for a room mic is wherever it sounds best to your ear. Walk around the room, get down low, point your ear in the direction that the mic would be facing. Put your finger in the other ear so that you are not hearing in stereo. Your ear will pic up the same phase cancellatioins, comb filters, etc. that a mic would in any spot in the room. So where the guitar sounds best to your ear is where it will sound best to the mic.
I'm a big fan of 57's paired with a ribbon mics. If you put the ribbon about 12 inches off of the cone it should be safe. Also, if you use a much shorter cable for a ribbon placed that far away, the two mics should be very close to being in phase. Then you can just play with the distances until they sound right together. You can also expand the waveforms and double check that the peaks all line up. You don't even need to use a sample delay plug-in. Just shift the actual waveform.
Also, in most cases you absolutely don't need to crank the amp all the way up to get a good tone. Usually the amp with the volume and gain backed off a bit (to a lot) from where you think it's right is going to sound best recorded. This is because your ear mixes in all of the room sound which washes out some of the detail and grind in the sound, so you wind up turning up the gain to compensate. However, a close 57 will be picking up all of that extra gain which usually just sound like mush close up. Sometimes you have to put your ear right up to where the mic will be to really get the gain and eq on the amp set well (which of course means turning the master down).
The ribbon mic will definately give you a big smooth low end. The 57 should give you a nice punchy tight top end. I also recently used a Peluso CMEC-6 pencil mic with really great results. About 1/2 way between the center and edge of the speaker, 6" away, and on axis. The SPL on these is around 147 db, so it can take the abuse. Great tone........tight and big.

  • Your tips for recording vocals

    To all the vocal producers out there:
    What are your tips for recording vocals? Not necessarily the EQ and compression and that jazz, but how you record it? I'm trying to record my own vocals but naturally I can't sing a verse in one take. Do you guys break each line up? How do you do it so the tone and volume are the same each time? If you've got a different audio segment for each line, do you just chop them up and merge them into one segment? Do you record harmonies the same way or do you have pitch-shift shortcuts?

    Maybe I'm just cranky today (apologies in advance), but when I saw this:
    but naturally I can't sing a verse in one take
    I wanted to throw something. Why the f#7*& not?
    My suggestion to you is you work hard on your vocal abilities, maybe with the help of a good vocal coach. Once that's done, learn microphone technique. After that's done, practice, practice, practice.
    When you have accomplished the above, test several microphones and find which one suits your voice. Maybe you should book some time at a commercial studio with a helpful engineer for this step. Learn the characteristics of each microphone and preamp, and see which best suit your voice.
    Then, and only then, start buying stuff for your home studio: then there will be another few months while you learn how to put it all together.
    Meanwhile, this might help:

    And good luck!

  • Can anyone recommend a quality microphone for recording instruments?

    Hey,
    I'm a Garageband and digital audio newbie. I understand you can connect a microphone to record in, instead of using the built-in mic. Can anyone recommend a couple different good quality mics? I want to record an acoustic guitar. Or maybe a web link that discusses how to do this?
    Also, in the Garageband Help it describes as an alternative using an audio interface between the mic and the computer. Can anyone recommend something for this? Again, maybe an online article that discusses this in more detail?
    I can't really find any specific information to help with this other than the vague sales and Help material.

    My personal fav's for the sound quality and price point are the Apex 415 and Apex 460. Both are condenser mic's so then need phantom power, but the 460 comes with a phantom powered preamp so you should be good to go assuming you have an appropriate interface to your mac. Price on them is ~$160CDN for the 415 and ~$260CDN for the 460. The sound quality on these is stunning - rich, warm, and exceptionally detailed, especially compared to the shure SM57's. I will agree though that the SM57 is a terrific all-purpose mic (the design hasn't changed in 20 years, it's hard to argue the accepted capability of these mic's!), but I've found that it just hasn't been able to do justice to the rich sound of my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV. Last night I was practicing with my band and was testing out an Apex 415 in place of the SM57 I usually use to mic my guitar cabinet, and when I played the sound back, I commented to the drummer that it sounded really good. He was looking directly at me, listened, and after a second realized that I wasn't actually playing my guitar and was instead playing back the recording. The expression on his face was priceless..."holy $hit that sounds good, I thought you were actually playing!".

    Hi,
    Open the original DTP and click on change.
    1) In Update you will find "create error DTP", just click on it system automatically create error DTP for you original DTP.
    2) Do not change any thing, just come back to your original DTP and activate your DTP again.
    Now come back and refresh the info provider tree.
    now execute your DTP, request will be green in target and you will error records in error stack.

  • Any Tips for editing Live Event 2 camera shoot?

    I need to quickly edit a 2 DV camera recording of a live multi-scene performance (duration of 90 minutes), with audio additionally recorded on a good quality remote mic.
    I have used FCE for some time, but not for several months. I have managed to forget many of the lessons learnt through trial and error, as well as by reading Tom wolsky's FCE Editing Workshop! So shortcut tips would be very helpful.
    I am also using FCE 3.5 for the first time after my upgrade.

    I am considering making the audio into one mono track for simplicity, as the auditorium acoustics have "mixed up" the sound, with little stereo separation. Should I then duplicate the track to build the sound quality at the end?
    Any other general Tips always welcome.

    I am a pretty good source for basic sound info - you can email me if you like
    [email protected]
    you are right about the link - I am sorry - i checked the website before I typed the link in too! A blond moment
    A low shelf filter - as included in FCE and soundtrack cuts the bottom off a soundmix. 20hz is a low frequency - not many speaker systems can reproduce this frequency, and most speaker systems can't even get to 40hz - even you high fi system or speakers which say they may be able too present sound for 20hz to 20khz - well unless you have spent an aweful lot of money and have a sub bass speaker the size of a car probably may only go down to 40hz, and the production of any 20hz sounds is more likely a feeling - a psychoacousticc effect. The thing about cutting off the bass is that practically it can make the recording sound less muddy, and you can make the recording sound louder. Most recordings for CD play have the bass started to roll of pretty heavily at 40hz and nothing present at 20hz... theirs this thing called narquist theory which talks about frequency responce - but it is this math heavy thing - so basically cut out a good amount of the sub bass. A low shelf filter does this and If you want to be conservative cut below 20hz, and if you want to be real give it a good cut below 35hz.
    Now I was sure that their was a mac version of that monofilter that I saw on the web page - I have a PC and do most of my audio work on a PC as that is what I have used the most. If you can get the mono filter work it will make the bottom end sound much better - more natural - less clicky and perhaps abnoxious.... those of us who like trip hop are always striving to get a nice warm bass that represents itself well on a range of speakers. something smooth - it is a bit of a trick - monofilter is one of those tricks.
    If you put the bass in mono (below 250hz ish) and keep the phase right speakers find it easier to work with the signal. Also stereo bass is not something that translates well on speakers... Bass tends to just flood the room where as the more mid and trebbly sounds give the audio a feeling of distance and space and left and right. The monofilter has a bass compression/limiting and phase correction built itno it, and implimented on a slider called 'trim'. Listen to your recording on good speakers and probably just bring the trim down a touch (my guess)... as complex as it sounds the monofilter is very easy to use, and is super clever. Now I thought that nugen had a mac audio unit plugin - that is a pity if they don't and kind of makes my advice seem irelevant unless you are prepared to download an application that can use VST's.
    Amy
    be careful using an eq as most eq's disrupt the phase of the signal and can reek havok on live recordings. but do give it a low shelf filter at least below -20 but probably below -40 to -80 for practicalitys sake
    This is a bit over my head, I am afraid. Do you know a source of basic info for sound recording to help explain such things? It could be a book or an online resource?
    lol, what i meant was 20hz or 40 too 80hz - their is a low shelf filter in soundtrack that works well - I am talking about cutting off the low frequency bits of the recording here. Nugen audio has a little pdf that comes out with the monofilter talking about bass signals... I know it is geared towards music and perhaps music that you want to have a nice bass feel - however it translates to the real world too - You will be suprised at how great your audio will sound if you cut off a chunk of the sub bass, and put the low bass in mono.
    then you could look at exciting the signal - but that is another story....

  • Any new tips for making Garageband run quicker (Delay/Lag)?

    Hey all
    AI was just wondering if anyone had come up with any new tips for making Garageband run quicker? Theres such a delay form when I move the cursor or press play to when anything actually happens.
    Ive tried everything here
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/Optimize.html
    But its not really made anything quicker
    I don't know where this option is though?
    Make sure your Energy Saver System Prefs is set to Highest Performance, if this is an option
    I'm not using any effects/plugins (yet) on my song, but will start mixing EQing/using plugins soon so need to try and stop
    It really slowed down when I recorded (and copy pasted) a load of handclaps into it over the entire song and onto multiple tracks.
    I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Ive got 120GB of space left on my 500GB hard drive
    Any ideas or newer tips anyone?
    I'm running 39 tracks by the way.
    Thanks

    Through <b>FBL5N</b>, you have to select "<b>Cleared items</b>" with "from to date" and execute.
    You will get a list which can then be downloaded as excel by selecting "List" on top left followed by "export" and "spreadsheet".

  • Command or Canvas Events for Recording ?? Please Help..

    Hi I am Abhijith I am a total newbie to the j2me world, And I am learning it now,
    My project topic is "Bluetooth Walkie Talkie " , And I am trying my best and putting
    all my efforts to code incrementally by learning , Before I could implement bluetooth,
    I thought let me complete the recording The audio and playing part first,
    The recording and playing of audio is working fine , But i would like to do it a real manner as Real Walkie talkie does, I want to record audio ONLY when the Key is being
    pressed , and when its released it should exit the player hence saving the recorded file,
    (Actually i dont want to save it in future,i would be sending the bytearray though the bluetooth , but for now , I want the Current module to be ready)
    I tried my best searching online to implement my requirement but the couldnot find
    such events I found Canva's KEYPRESS, KEYRELEASE , etc events but they dint not
    serve my purpose, Let me clearly tell where I am stuck , After the midlet starts(by launching it) then i would like to press a key( keypressed say No 5) for certain
    amount of time and the audio should be recorded only for the keypressed duration ,
    after I release , it should stop recording and save as a wav file .
    Whats happening is When i keep the key pressed , The midlet asks whether to allow
    the recording , for this purpose when I release key the control is going out, and
    i am not able to achieve the needed , I am posting the code here, Please Help me.

    The control goes out when midlet asks whether to allow recording ,
    I thank you anticipation ...
    -Abhijith Rao

    Midlet asking whether to allow the recording are typical permissions prompts specified by MIDP security policy. You need to sign the MIDlet and give it proper permissions.
    Problems like this were discussed in an older thread at WTK forum: *[MIDlet keeps asking for permission.|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5347313]* According to one of the posters in the thread, +"...I got it to work on the emulator by setting the permission to 'manufacturer'. It runs smoothly without annoying questions..."+
    If you're interested, check documentation and tutorials on MIDP security policy for more details.
    For events to record audio only when the key is being pressed, consider GameCanvas API, method getKeyStates.
    I am not certain though if doing it this way is a good idea. I doubt that phone users have same habits as those of walkie-talkies; for them it might be indeed more comfortable to use single simple key presses to start and finish recording.

  • I have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

    i have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

    You just need a powered hub.. if you already use one then fine.
    Plug in just about any external hard disk will work fine. Format has to be readable by the TC.. ie fat32.. or much better HFS+.. plug it into a Mac to prepare the drive.
    Pick whatever size suits.. nowadays 2TB are most economical.
    WD, Seagate have goobled up all the minor players.. so pick one.
    Whatever suits your budget and asthetics.
    NOTE.. The USB on the TC is fine for printers.. IMHO it is the wrong way to go with USB disks.. use the internal disk of the TC.. USB is less than half the native speed plugged into a Mac.. TC to USB is slow.. far slower than internal drive.. or using external drive as external.

  • How do I use optical input for recording in Garageband 9?

    Hi,
    I'm trying to use the Optical Line Input on my G5 for recording in Garageband, using a MOTU 828. I have the 828 optical output connected to the optical audio input on the G5, and I have Digital In (Optical digital-in port) selected in system preferences/sound. But in Garageband preferences, optical or digital input is not among my choices. If I select system setting or built-in audio 2, I get no signal. If I select MOTU 828, it defaults to the analog master outputs on the 828.
    I am a Logic 8 user, and I'm able to select the optical input in Logic with no problem. I have my MOTU audio setup set so that the optical output is the default output, but Garageband still seems to use the analog output. I can tell by the record level, which is considerably louder for analog than for optical.
    Any suggestions?

  • Can you use logic express on a mac mini for recording

    Can i use logic exprees on a mac mini for recording? Ive seen alot of 8,12, and 16 track recorders with a cd burner and it seems like a logical and more productive gues for me to buy a macmini for the same thing of recording and then I can uses logic express, a far better program for recording. can the mac mini handle the load of processing tracks and how much ram should I uses? thanks tim

    sorry, I'd like to butt in here:
    I would like to do the same thing, so I am curious about this forum and rather than starting a new one, can I get some advice on this possibility:
    Mac Mini
    1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    80GB Serial ATA drive
    Glyph External HD 250 Gig
    Mackie Onyx 1620 w/Firewire
    Logic Pro 7.2
    thoughts?
    The most number of tracks I could see at once would be 16.
    Here is something I am most curious about...
    Firewire Hard drive
    Firewire Interface/mixer
    Firewire camera for FCP
    to much firewire?
    Please let me know if you have other thoughts aswell...

    Julieanne Kost has just blogged about her  Adobe TV video on working with shapes and paths in Photoshop CC.  It's actually not that new to Adobe TV, and has already had a lot of views, but we get a lot of questions here on the subject with CC, and there are some nice little tips in it.  I certainly learned a couple of things. :-)

    I am able to pipe the results to a file however, I would like to convert it to CSV/HTML When i try "convertto-HTML"
    function it converts certain values . Also,
    a) I would like to remove duplicate entries when the script runs only for that execution.
    b) When the script is run, we may be able to search for records after the last run and not search in the same
    records that we have looked into before.
    PLEASE HELP !

    If you just want to look for the new events since the last run, I suggest to record the EventRecordID of the last event you parsed and use it as a reference in your filter. For example:
    <QueryList>
      <Query Id="0" Path="Security">
        <Select Path="Security">*[System[(EventID=4624 and
    EventRecordID>46452302)]]</Select>
        <Suppress Path="Security">*[EventData[Data[@Name="SubjectLogonId"]="0x0" or Data[@Name="TargetDomainName"]="NT AUTHORITY" or Data[@Name="TargetDomainName"]="Window Manager"]]</Suppress>
      </Query>
    </QueryList>
    That's this logic that the Server Manager of Windows Serve 2012 is using to save time, CPU and bandwidth. The problem is how to get that number and provide it to your next run. You can store in a file and read it at the beginning. If not found, you
    can go through the all event list.
    Let's say you store it in a simple text file, ref.txt
    1234
    At the beginning just read it.
    Try {
    $_intMyRef = [int] (Get-Content .\ref.txt)
    Catch {
    Write-Host "The reference EventRecordID cannot be found." -ForegroundColor Red
    $_intMyRef = 0
    This is very lazy check. You can do a proper parsing etc... That's a quick dirty way. If I can read
    it and parse it as an integer, I use it. Else, I just set it to 0 meaning I'll collect all info.
    Then include it in your filter. You Get-WinEvent becomes:
    Get-WinEvent -FilterXml "<QueryList><Query Id=""0"" Path=""Security""><Select Path=""Security"">*[System[(EventID=4624 and EventRecordID&gt;$_intMyRef)]]</Select><Suppress Path=""Security"">*[EventData[Data[@Name=""SubjectLogonId""]=""0x0"" or Data[@Name=""TargetDomainName""]=""NT AUTHORITY"" or Data[@Name=""TargetDomainName""]=""Window Manager""]]</Suppress></Query></QueryList>"
    At the end of your script, store the last value you got into your ref.txt file. So you can for example get that info in the loop. Like:
    $Result += $LogonRecord
    $_intLastId = $Event.RecordId
    And at the end:
    Write-Output $_intLastId | Out-File .\ref.txt
    Then next time you run it, it is just scanning the delta. Note that I prefer this versus the date filter in case of the machine wasn't active for long or in case of time sync issue which can sometimes mess up with the date based filters.
    If you want to go for a date filtering, do it at the Get-WinEvent level, not in the Where-Object. If the query is local, it doesn't change much. But in remote system, it does the filter on the remote side therefore you're saving time and resources on your
    side. So for example for the last 30 days, and if you want to use the XMLFilter parameter, you can use:
    <QueryList>
    <Query Id="0" Path="Security">
    <Select Path="Security">*[System[TimeCreated[timediff(@SystemTime) &lt;= 2592000000]]]</Select>
    </Query>
    </QueryList>
    Then you can combine it, etc...
    PS, I used the confusing underscores because I like it ;)

  • Search for records by Remote Key or Remote System in Data Manager

    Hi all,
    We have a requirement to search for records by Remote key and/or Remote System at the main table level. Is it possible to do this using the Data Manager? If so, how?
    Thanks in advance!
    Lavanya.

    Hi,
    I crosschecked with MDM 5.5 and Don't think it is possible through Data Manager. How ever using APIs you can search records using remote key/ remote system.
