Tips for removing a background with a bunch of people?

Main Objective:  How can I change the background behind a bunch of kids? My quick selection tool is quirky! Like the HS kids in the pic….
The 2nd photo is what I am looking to do.
When I try the quick selection tool, it's all wonky & quirky now.  I can't select little bits any more! It just basically takes the whole stinkin' page! What did I do?!  Are there defaults?
On watched video number 85 today, I tried to use my stylus and the bamboo pad. (Good grief; that's another story...it moves & I'm not even touching the pad; what's up with that?! Way too confusing, so I gave up!)
Anyway..this is what I need.
What is easier for me to remove the background?  The kids?  Pretend I didn't say yes to help with this project?
All the video tutorials on how to remove backgrounds is always on a perfect object...not a real life mess of a class.  So... HELP!!!
Please.
This is WAY over my head; but I'm trying. Really.

When Quick Select and Refine edge start to go wrong, it is probably best to escape out of Refine Edge, and tidy up the Quick select selection.  Toggle Quick mask on and off with the Q key, so you can zoom in and add and remove to get a better selection.
If things are still not working for you, increase the contrast dramatically with an addjustment layer, andadd a copy merged layer to the top of the stack.  Use this layer to make and refine your selection, and when happy, OK it.  Turn off the copy merged layer and asdjustment layer you used to increase contrast.  Select the layer with the children and Cmd j to copy to a new layer.
Or probably better...
While in Refine edge, click on decontaminate colours, which will force a new layer with layer mask as the output option.  OK that.
Now Cmd click the layer mask on that new layer > turn off the two layers mentioned above, and add a layer mask to the children layer.  Refine Edge is seldom 100%, and having a layer mask allows you clean things up.

You may find it easier to select the kids than the background. Instead of copying to new layer, create a mask, then you can add or remove as you like.
In the top tool bar click the icon in the middle to add to selection. Then use your option key to remove.
When you are nearing done, you can then refine the mask. If necessary you can use the other selection tool for straight lines, large areas etc. For tight places you may prefer to use the quick mask tool (lowercase q)
Take your time, you will get it. And like I said, using a mask will let you take a breather. It can help walking away for a bit.

  • Tips on removing RAID0 along with hard drive replacement (W700)

    Hello,
I have a W700 with 2 160G SATA II drives in it configured with RAID0 (striping).  I would like to replace the drives with an SSD drive and, at the same time, un-raid the config.
After some surfing, this seemed like a pretty good guideline for imaging the system, swapping the hard drive(s), and then restoring from the image: http://www.pagestart.com/win7bckuprstrnhd072610.html
But before I launch the project, I thought I'd ask for tips on removing the RAID configuration.  Change it to non-raid before swapping out the old drives?  Or maybe change it to non-raid the first time I turn the system on with the new drive (but before I've done the restore from image).
New to me, so not sure what all to ask-
    Thanks for any help!

I would back up the data, disable RAID in BIOS, remove the old drives, insert the new drive and installation media, and turn the computer back on.

  • Any tips for removing duplicate photos?

I had over 12,000 photos, with batches of photos in directory structures similar to folders like:
    /NewEvent
    /NewEvent/OriginalJPGs
    /NewEvent/ProcessedForWeb
    /NewEvent/ProcessedForPrint
    /NewEvent/ProcessedForScreenDisplay
Now, I have multiple photos ... is there any way to easily remove duplicate photos in iPhoto?   Other Suggestions?   I'm switching from PC to Mac, and have just gotten started with iPhoto.
    Thanks,
    Richard

Well, they are duplicates, as far as I'm concerned,  they mess up my orgami slide show by seeing the same photo plastered to the screen three times ... and they were duplicates before I imported them into iPhoto ... but yes, I processed the Nikon NEF file to a proof first image, then to a print optimized second image, then to a web browser optimized third image ... etc ... all BEFORE I imported them into iPhoto ...
So, now, I was wondering if there was a way to delete duplicte (meaning photos that look alike) eventhough they are different sized ...
Are you saying that if my source folders had multiple copies of the exact same file, then iPhoto would have only imported one of these files, and skipped the second?
    thanks for your help

  • Pacman.conf NEED tips for totally offline install with DVD repository

OBJECTIVE: after a base install with ARCHBOOT be able to install from DVD repository which contains repo-add database.
My DVD contains the folder from /var/cache/pacman/pkg.
ON the DVD I have the folder 'pkg' at the dvd root level and another folder which has my already built packages fro AUR.
The database called 'custom.db.tar.gz' created with repo-add exists IN the pkg folder on the DVD.
The built AUR packages are in a seperate folder called '_built' at the dvd's root level as well and they are not included in the repo-add database.
I am able to mount the dvd, cd to the pkg folder and use  pacman -Ud to install them though this requires that I type in the full name of the package and I get dependence issues and '*.so' type files not found.
IF I copy all the files from the DVD to the var/cache/pacman/pkg folder I am able to add my local repository to pacman.conf and MUCH more efficient install. I can use pacman -S xorg for example, and I think it finds dependencies even. Can't recall exactly at the moment.
SO: do I need to alter pacman.conf  cache location line and the other lines?
Would I change the 2nd and 3rd lines to get max pacman ability when using DVD repository???
Pointing them to my DVD folder after mounting the dvd
    #RootDir     = /
    #DBPath      = /var/lib/pacman/
    #CacheDir    = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
    #LogFile     = /var/log/pacman.log
I really would like to have as much power and flexibility when using the DVD as the repo.
Can anyone tell me what I should alter in pacman.conf for this.
I am fine if I have to alter the cache location line temporarily if it will give me additional pacman ability.
I have read all the wiki stuff for sure though I'm still a bit in the dark and wanted to ask without typing the many many options.
One big one for me is I don't yet know how to set the SERVER = in pacman.com to look at the mounted DVD and the pkg folder specifically.
    I do mount /dev/sr0  /mnt/cdrom
So what would I put as the SERVER for this in pacman.conf
    SERVER = /dev/sr0   ?????   or   /dev/cdrom  ????    or /mnt/cdrom I think ????
    dunno!
AND I really probably DO have to temporarily alter the pacman.conf  cache location line to get pacman to do dependency installs and let me type short lines instead of the full package name.
THANKS! this one is BIG for me!!!!! :---)

COMMENT WRITTEN LAST: I was about to delete a lot of stuff here though thought to just say sorry for not taking the brain-time to slim it. The bold and white boxed part is the main related quest-ion.
you might find a few useful tools on my site (in my sig), e.g. pkgd if you want to save bandwidth on a LAN --- pbget if you want to easily get PKGBUILDs etc from the AUR and official repos, etc.
WOW Xyne !!!! thanks.  pbget etc. sound very cool.
I used yaourt until very recently. Then went ....hmmmm... should learn about manual building and local repo. Where I'm at now is trying to do as much manually as possible. I think I kinda know what packages I want and there will only be some changes from that in the future. There's maybe 20 packages from AUR for me. [PLUS their dependencies]
Of course: I am doing the repo-add local repositories thing for speed, learning, and as part of my whole 'best practices' growth. Plus it will come in very handy when helping other decide quickly if a barbones mainly wm/ncurses lightweight system is for them.
You certainly spark a question or two!
[AUR and dependencies via yaourt affecting my plans to now go manually]
As these have all ALREADY been installed via yaourt my BIG concern is that I've never found much of a yaourt/cache folder. You see, as you'd know many many times upon installing vai yaourt there's some dependency that may, or I guess, may not be in the standard repos.
After installing these packages via yaourt do the dependencies go into /var/cache/pacman.pkg and is pacman aware of it when I do a repo-add for thecustom database. If so, then all if fairly cool for my plans. I bet there's a few idiosyncrasies about AUR and dependencies maybe.
    -AUR dependency resolution-
Using a custom repo will not really work for general use because you would need to manually populate the database with the dependencies anyway.
I'm fine with manually doing dependencies - though need to know if my yaourt usage ALREADY put the latest dependencies in the pacman cache for AUR unsupported packages AND is there a way with the whole repo-add, local repositry, pacman and aur concpt I'm planning to fine tune to have the dependencies update when I go back to the online repositries? I don't think so based on my usage with yaourt, though can't quite recall.
As I will be enjoying makepkg building the group of packages I nee to get from AUR for the forseeable future (that are not in the main 3 repos of course)
I'm still wondering about the inter-relationships. So: I already have installed and/or built the packages for everything I expect to need mostly.   I never became beyone mediocre with yaourt.  and that fine, though I now have to consider that in a new install I DO have the latest AUR built packages, though will there be the right dependencies ALREADY in my /var/cache/pacman/pkg ?
There's a few things that I'd love to really understand about this. Even if it ends up that dependencies for the AUR packages is always a bit trickier.
QUESTION: right now I am uable to try custom repo from flash stick as it's read only. I'll be googling this one out and am really looking forward to having a flash stick with ARCHBOOT and I gues ONE repo pkg folder and database on it.
NOTE: I will put the custom repo above the stock ones in pacman.conf. I just commented out the others as I was doing all this offline.
I've dumped the dvd as a repo and have switched to a flash stick.  I've extracted the archboot out to a 4 gig flash stick.
dd if=/root/Desktop/archlinux-2009.05-2-archboot.iso of=/dev/sdb  Its read-only at the moment and no matter what I've tried it stays that way. Maybe I need to use the HPutil on it. It definitely isn't writeable so I won't ponder or note observations here save to say that 'm stumped as to how to get files copied to it.
And now what may be the way I'd like to work:    Keep my folder for building packages from aur which is /root/aur. Then after doing the fun makepkg --asroot   or even makepg -i as root to install. Though I'll probably after the build THEN just copy the built packages from my /root/aur to /var/cache/pacman/pkg   and install from there as I DO plan to use the online repos.
I will ALSO copy the file to my USB stick or maybe just sync to it and do a the repo-add thing in   /var/cache/pacman/pkg   and keep the stick as both backup and 'in the ready' reinstaller.
Um, now  could spend an hour editing down the above!!!
    wondrous thanks!

  • Tips for removing wind noise

i have some nasty wind noise and can't seem to reduce it very well, any tips?

What Pancenter said, although the worst kind is super low frequency, so if you're lucky, a high-pass filter can help. Take a look at the waveform of the sound. If you see area where the wave just stays at the maximum or minimum without oscillating that means there's nothing you can do. It's like blowing your highlights in video. Nada.  The wind has pushed the mic diaphragm so far that it's unable to vibrate. In that case you may consider ADR, i.e. recording the same talent with the same mic, lip-syncing.
As you're working to resolve this problem, you'll be promising yourself that, in the future, you'll listen carefully when shooting, and move the shot, use a windscreen, wait until the wind dies down, … anything to avoid wind noise.

  • Data Recovery Tip For Boot Camp Users with Damaged OSX Disk

My iMac suddenly stopped booting (endless gear on white load screen).
It won't target mode. Disk Repair fails. It wont safe boot.
However, it does have a Windows Boot Camp partition.
I was able to use HFSExplorer (a free 3rd party app) to mount my OSX drive inside windows (when it wouldn't mount on my macbook connected by firewire - even though it could see the device). I then saved a load of data I hadn't yet backed up.
This method saved me a lot of stress, so I was hoping it could help someone else out.
BTW I'm about to do a fresh install of OSX as I can't get it to boot.
    1. This will not affect my (still functioning) Windows partition, will it?
    2. Is there anything else I can try to get it to boot right? There's 3-4 "red" errors on disk repair and it says it can't fix them.

If you are able to access the Mac OS X volume then you should be able to install a fresh Leopard. First I would erase the volume and zero out the data if Disk Utility will do it before the install. What I am afraid will happen is that DU will tell you that it cannot unmount the volume to do the erase. If so, a new version of Leopard may still have issues.

  • Cutting out an image/ removing a background/ editing an image

With Sprout by HP you can remove objects from their backgrounds, also called extracting, cutting, or masking.
You simply select the image to create a preview, choose the part of the image you want to keep, and choose the part of the image you want to discard.
You can also zoom in or out to get more control over what you select.
You can check out How to Remove the Background with Sprout by HP to read more about this function.
I work for HP, supporting the HP Experts who volunteer their time and technical knowledge to help others.

In Photoshop use File > Save for Web & Devices and choose the GIF or the PNG format.
Note that the PNG has two versions, 8 bit  or 24 bit.
    Check the tranparency checkbox.
PNG (24 bit) provides the best result but also the largest file size.

  • ID 5.5 Interact. PDF, cannot remove white background for Multi-States and buttons.

    Hi
I am working on an Interactive PDF Portfolio document. The problem I have is with Multi-State object feature with several buttons going to states that need to be exported as a SWF and imported back into InDesign 5.5. See, the background of my entire doc. is GREY, but when I import the SWF (as directed in Lynda.com videos correctly) and export the entire doc as Interactive PDF and view it in Adobe Acrobat Pro (version 10.1.1) is when all the trouble starts.
When I try to get rid of the WHITE background around the Multi-State objects and the buttons for them (using Select Object Tool and then control+click on it to change the Properties to Transparent Background Appearance) it does not change, even when I go forward and backward to the page.
Does the option of removing white background and making it transparent work only for Animation, but not Multi-State feature with buttons?
Can anyone suggest any other tecnique to create a nice slide show that works in Interactive PDF in ID CS5.5? Please..
    Sincerely,
    in need of help,
    Eve

I have 8 Multi-State objects in one stack on the left and the 8 buttons for each state in the stack on the right. The background of my document is dark grey. There is space inbetween Multi-State objects and the buttons that show the grey background. But after exporting as SWF the Multi-States together with the buttons and placing the SWF back in the PDF file, the space inbetween Multi-States and buttons that is supposed to show the grey background appears white. The problem is that I cannot even change this white background to transparent in Acrobat Pro, as well. I used to do that to animations and it worked, but not in this case.

  • Best format for saving & resizing  photo with transparent background

I have some product shots where I cut out the background, so the background is now transparent. What is the best format to save these in to preserve the transparency and also resize the photo in the future? I seem to remember from long ago that Tiffs don't resize easily? but when I saved the shot as Eps I couldn't find a way to preserve the transparency. These are for a client who wants to send these shots to various publications for ads, so I need something they can resize. Thanks for your help!

Transparency is only saved in EPS files with an embedded clipping path. EPS files limit you to 1-bit transparecy, meaning you either show a portion of the image or you don't. This kind of transparency means hard edges around your subject.
If you use PSD,PDF,PDP files, you can offer a soft transition from opaque to transparent in as many as 256 steps. If you have already removed the background in your layered file, then this would be the way to go. The latest releases of QuarkXPress and all releases of InDesign support PSD.

  • Remove background with elements 11

I have a photograph with a person on it and would like to remove the background so I can cut the person out and place on a white background. I have tried the erasrue tool but when I get too close to the edge it is not differentiating between the person and the background - the colours are not hugely different. I have tried different ways of doing it with discontinuous option. on demos, it points to the sampling option but that doesn't seem to be available as an option. I have also tried using the selection tool but it is difficult/impossible for me to accurately capture the body of the person only as it traces elements of the door behind the person. I am hoping for an option which does not take a long time but is also precise as I have a few shots like this to do.

    team barker,
I used the magnetic lasso tool to select this young lady. On the tool's option bar, I set feather=1px, width=3px, contrast= 3%, frequency=57. Note that when you use this tool, you click and release the mouse button, and work your way arouind from the starting point so as to end up with a complete selection. Once this is accomplished, you should see "marching ants." You can lay down an additional anchor point at any time with a left mouse click, and go back with the delete key on the keyboard.
    Open file
Go to enhance menu>adjust lighting>levels and move the right slider a little to the left, and the left slider a little towards the right
Use the magnetic lasso tool to select the young lady, then place her on a separate layer (CTRL+J).
Open a blank layer below the layer created in step #3, and fill with white
I took the liberty to try something else -- blurred the background.

  • Tips for blue screen (BSOD) errors with Windows Vista and Intel Turbo Memory on X61/X61s

Important note: The symptoms and solutions described below address only a small subset of the possible causes for blue screen errors, aka BSOD.
This information can help address blue screen errors specifically
related to Turbo Memory, but may not solve errors related to other
issues. Please read through the instructions completely, make sure they
apply to your system, and after attempting the solutions please post
back with your feedback for the community.
Some users may experience random blue screen errors with ThinkPad
systems running Windows Vista with Intel Turbo Memory hardware. These
blue screens may occur during normal usage on the system or they may
occur when booting into Windows Vista. Blue screens related to the
Intel Turbo Memory hardware may reference a stop code of 8086 with
    memory address locations of {0, 0, 0, 0}.
There are two main steps that you can take to help resolve blue screen issues related to Intel Turbo Memory.
Step 1: Update Intel Turbo Memory Driver
If the driver version is before version 1.0.1.1004-7.0.3.1001, please
    update to this version.
To determine what version of the Intel Turbo Memory driver is installed:
    1.    Click Start, then click Control Panel.
    2.    Click System and Maintenance.
    3.    Click System.
    4.    Click Device Manager.
    5.    Expand the Storage controllers category.
    6.    Double-click Intel Flash Cache Logic Chip.
    7.    Click the Driver tab. Then you will see the driver version (for example, 1.0.1.1004).
The new driver and installation instructions can be found here.
Note: The Intel Matrix Storage Driver is updated with this package.
    Step 2: BIOS version
If your BIOS version is older than those listed below, please update to the version listed.
How to check your BIOS version:
    Turn off the system.
    Turn on the system.
While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
    The
BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor
password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the
    password.
Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
    Turn off the system.
    System BIOS versions:
    ThinkPad X61 or X61s - BIOS version 1.06 (7NET25WW)
    Please
remember that these updates do not solve every possible system blue
screen, but they do resolve several problems related to the Intel Turbo
    Memory driver.

    Dear Tim,
First off, many thanks for the tips for resolving BSOD with Vista + Turbo Memory on X61.  I've been suffering from this BSOD for countless times since I bought in my X61 7673-CW9 in April 2008.
Even prior to having the pleasure to visit this wonderful forum, I followed both steps as indicated, and updated my Intel Turbo Memory driver to 1.5.0.1013 and my BIOS to 7NETB4WW (2.14).  However, the BSOD recurrs.
For the past two months, I've recovered my system to factory default settings using Rescue and Recovery for over twenty times, each time with the latest Intel Turbo Memory driver and BIOS.  Notwithstanding that, BSOD recurrs.
During these painful experiences, I tried two options: 1) making my X61 up-to-date by using System Update and Windows Update (including Vista SP1 or excluding Vista SP1); 2) keeping my X61 the status as factory default (i.e. without updating through either System Update or Windows Update (the automatic/scheduled update function of both is turned off)).  In either case, BSOD recurrs.
I'm 100% positive that the BSOD does not arise from any hardware or software/firmware I install.  I never install any hardware (e.g. RAM).  And, it is not caused by any software/firmware I install: the clear and unequivocal evidence is that at one time,I encountered BSOD while having restored back to factory setting and booting for the first time.
I live in Taiwan, and I seldom heard this BSOD here.  All of my friends (as most of Taiwan residents) using X61 operate in Traditional Chinese environment, whereas I operate in English environment.  In Taiwan, when booting for the first time after purchase/recovery, the Windows Vista Business system provides for lanuage choice (Traditional Chinese or English), and, once chosen, the language cannot be altered later on (unless, of course, the system is restored back to factory default settings).
My system specs are the same as the day I purchased it and are listed below (as I'm not sure if my machine type X61 7673-CW9 is applicable outside Taiwan):
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.4GHz
    Memory: 1.00 G.B.
    System: Windows Vista Business (32-bit)
    Hard Drive: 160 G.B. @ 7,200 r.p.m.
And, of course, with Intel Turbo Memory 1 G.B.
I contacted the Lenovo support staff here in Taiwan for countless times, but they seem to be clueless.  I learned that some friends at this forum downgraded their OS back to Windows XP, but I chose not to.  The reason is simple: my purchase price for X61 7673-CW9 includes the Intel Turbo Memory, which cannot function under Windows XP (at least so far).
Therefore, I just wish to share my experience here and perhaps I can get some advice from you and other friends here.  Any advice will be tremendously and enormously appreciated.
