Tips For Solving the Mac OS X Lion Slowness (Lots of Beach Balls)

Hi Folks,
Just a quick list of tips for this issue that some of Mac OS X Lion users face.
The main symptom is that we get the Beach Ball on almost any task, it takes 4, maybe five times more time to do what we need to do. So depending on the schedule, it can drive us crazy. I was facing that, and started to think that Lion was a Windows Vista relative.
Please remind that the tips below involve backing up and restoring your system. If you are not careful, you may lose everything. You are responsible for your acts. Be cautious!
How I solved my issue:
1) Checked for Disk Permissions and the Disk itself:
- Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility:
- Click on your disk, and then VERIFY DISK. If everything is OK, move on. If it is not, REPAIR DISK.
- Now click on VERIFY DISK PERMISSIONS. If everthing is OK, move. If not, Repair.
This step 1 is to make sure that your slowness is due to something related to the OS itself and not to permissions/disk.
If this solves the slowness, then you are OK. Now further steps are necessary. In my case, this just helped a little bit. The beach-balling reduced by 20% only. Still too slow.
2) Do a full backup of your system.
I used Time Machine. Make sure you have all of your applications closed. So the backup will be full. If you fail to do a good backup, you will lose everything! Make sure you do a good one. Maybe do it twice on 2 different disks! Now you have been warned.
3) Do a Full Restore of your entire system.
Now, get that Install CD that came with your Mac,
- Put it on your drive, shut down your computer.
- While holding the C key, press the start button of your Mac. It will boot using the Install CD that came with your Mac.
To recover your entire system:
Connect your Time Machine backup disk to your computer. If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, make sure the disk has been repaired or replaced.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disk, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System from Backup.
In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
Select your Time Machine backup volume.
Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore.
Follow the onscreen instructions.
4) Remove the CD, and boot.
When I did that, the system came back very fast and responsive. No more beach balls (only on the really-intensive tasks), and everything was back to normal.
5) So, what was it anyways?
Before doing this Backup/Restore, I was getting lots of DISK I/O ERRORS, specially during boot time (you can check that by shutting down your mac, powering it back on and imediatelly pressing Command-V - Verbose Mode).
Sure, the first thing in mind was that I had a faulty hard drive, but I checked it several times for errors (via Disk Utility), and nothing showed up.
So I decided to do a full backup/restore of the system. And it solved it, at least for me.
My config:
MacBook Pro (2009 edition) - 5 GB RAM - 640 GB HD - Mac OS X 10.7
Regards.

Also my mac will not complete my 5 software updates, no idea which software, but it said it could not do it. Also backing up with time machine had failed twice today. Thanks

When you say hit and miss do you mean sometimes you print a whole document with no problems, or do you mean each document has problems? This is from HP's website for your printer:
Your sig says 10.6.7 but your message says 10.7. So if it's really Lion, this printer isn't officially supported. Elsewhere on HP's site it says updated drivers will be available on your Mac via Software Update. Have you run that recently?

  • I have this iMac late 2006 and I want to install the Mac OS X Lion

    Hello,
I want to install Mac os X lion, (not mountain lion) on my iMac Late 2006 , but it is no longer available in the mac app store. How can I do to install the Mac OS X Lion on  my computer?
The thing is that i was hoping the the mountain lion was compatible with my iMac, so is there a way i can still get the Mac OS X lion?

Apple for some dumb reason removed it from the App store, so you now have to call them and ask for it.  I also have a Late 2006 Mac Pro and luckily I took the plung awhile ago and bought it from the App store.  Since they cut off so many machines still being used they should have left Lion in the store.  Any 2006-2007 Mac Pro and any other Mac that has a video card that doesn't have 64b drivers cannot go to Mountain Lion.

  • How to install the mac os x lion???

i have installed the mac os x lion developer review. now im trying to install the offcial one but it doesnt work.
it says :"this disk cannot be used to start up your computer".
    please help!!!

I would submit the bug request to the Developer feedback mechanisms.  Your action of running the Developer preview is under a non-disclosure agreement.  Hence any issues with the Preview should only be submitted via the channels you got the Developer preview from within.  One that is known to all is http://bugreporter.apple.com/ If you got it without ever getting a non-disclosure agreement, you are in violation of Apple's agreements and should erase it from your machine, and start over again with a licensed 10.6 that either was first used to install 10.6 on your machine, or a newer retail edition.  10.6 came in 10.6, and 10.6.3 retail editions.  If your Mac was new after March 1st, 2010, it came with its own Mac Mini 10.6.3 or later installer disc which must be used to install 10.6.  Otherwise the retail 10.6.3 should work, as long as it doesn't say Upgrade, Dropin, OEM, or any specific Mac model.  Finally, apply the 10.6.6, 10.6.7, 10.6.8 combo update before upgrading to Lion from the Mac App Store if all your applications are ready for Lion.

No idea about RAR Machine, sorry. If you have the latest release, you might want to contact the developer and ask for assistance.
    Regards.

Right click the hard drive icon and select Get Info. In the new pane, on the bottom, do this:
    1. click the padlock, and authenticate with your password.
    2. change Privilege to Read & Write - just click what is there and options will appear.
    3. close the pane.

where from i can buy the mac os x lion because i am using windows base system when i try to buy from apple web side it show in app store only not in itunes

Have you tried booting from the Recovery HD to reinstall Lion?
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
You will need the Apple ID and password used to purchase Lion. If you have not purchased Lion, then you will need to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD and install Snow Leopard then update it to 10.6.8 to access the App Store where you can purchase and download Lion under your own Apple ID. Or you can purchase the Apple USB Lion installer flash drive at any local Apple retailer or the Online Store.

Thanks to cor-el for solving the problem I had with tiny text when I opened AOL mail. Using Ctrl-0 worked perfectly.

When using flash player for games, the mac runs real slow.   It's also not the fastest at anything.   Can I do anything to speed stuff up ?????

Have no clue.  You provided no details and your system profile is blank.
    Which os are you using?
How are you connected to the internet?
Have you contacted your isp to make sure the slowness is not coming from their end?
    Max out your ram.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
You you using the latest version of Adobe Flash?
Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.

  • My MacBook (late 2009 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) often runs VERY slow...beach ball of death frequently.  My page ins (5.29GB), page outs (5.64BG), and swap files (10GB) seem extremely high in comparison to most other discussions in here.  HELP!!??

My MacBook (late 2009 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) often runs VERY slow...beach ball of death frequently.  My page ins (3.29GB), page outs (5.64BG), and swap files (10GB) seem extremely high in comparison to most other discussions in here.   I don't know how to copy the pie chart so it shows on here but here's what it says right now:
    Free - 176 MB
    Wired - 592MB
    Active - 843MB
    Inactive - 432MB
    Used - 1.82 GB
    VM size - 198GB
The page ins and page outs have 0 bytes/sec in the parenthesis even though the numbers are so high.
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

You difinately need more ram. 2gb is the bare minimum to run just the Lion OS, anything extra will slow your Mac to a crawl. Upgrade to 8gb from either Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/
And you will be a happy camper!

  • Link aggregated between NAS and a switch: the Mac as a very slow access...

    Hello,
in my Office we're working with Macs and PCs and all the data is on a NAS.
    Here is our configuration:
    NAS <-link1->Switch<-Link2->Macs or PC.
Macs are connected with AFP protocol (because SMB is very slow).
We want to use Link Aggregation between the NAS and the switch (with 802.3ad procotol) but when we do that all the Macs have a very slow access to the NAS. But all is OK with the PCs.
What can we do? Is there a problem with macOS X and link aggregation?
    Thank you for your help.
    Nicolas

Sorry, not sure what the question is exactly.
You must have an Xserve, or Ethernet cards capable of Jumbo Frames for one, I assume the Switch & NAS are capable?
    Possible clues...

I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.
