Tips for upgrading from LR2 to 3 while switching to a new computer?

My old mac was a G5 so I finally joined the modern world with a new iMac. On the new machine I've installed LR3, but I'm still running LR2 on the old machine. I want to bring all my pics/catalogs/dbs over (most likely by getting an external HD case for the current drive of the old machine) to the new machine and into LR2. Any tips on how to import everything? Anything to watch out for? I have thousands of images, some of it paid work, and I don't want to lose anything. Thanks.

Rule No. 1: DON'T IMPORT!!
This is what I would do:
On the old machine and LR2, make sure you have one (or just a few)  top-level folders for all your images, and they are showing  hierarchically in your folder panel. You might have to use "Add Parent  Folder" a few times to achieve this.
With the old drive mounted on the new machine, double-click the LR2 catalog to start LR3
You will be asked if you want to convert your LR2 catalog into an LR3 catalog
Confirm this action, which will build a new LR3 catalog from your LR2 catalog, leaving the LR2 catalog as it is
If your folders/images show missing (which I'm not sure about on a Mac when the same volume is mounted as an external drive), perform a "Find missing folder" on all top-level folder(s) of your catalog, pointing to the folders on the mounted volume
If needed/wanted, you can then move the top-level image folders from within LR to a different volume
If you need/want to move the catalog as well, copy the "[catalogname].lrcat" file and the "[catalogname] Previews.lrdata" folder to a different drive when LR is closed, and restart LR by double clicking the copied .lrcat file
Delete the old catalog after you're sure the new one works to your satisfaction
You might also want to consider copying your presets, plugins and ACR defaults from the old machine to the new one.

  • Tip for upgrading from MBP to iMac with Leopard & Parallels Boot Camp

Here are some pointers based on my recent experience upgrading from a MacBook Pro to an iMac, under Leopard and with Parallels using a Boot Camp partition for Windows.
First, you do not need to create a Windows partition on your new computer. You will use Boot Camp Assistant to do that - it can dynamically resize your existing Mac OS X partition without destroying it. (I initially used Disk Utility to create a Windows partition but it wasn't recognised properly by Parallels and also the Mac wouldn't boot from it).
A great way to simplify getting your old installation across is to make a Time Machine backup onto an external drive. Yes, you could also use start up your old Mac in Target mode (hold down T key when you start it), then start the new Mac and copy your settings over. But in my case, the new iMac (a refurb) came with Tiger installed on it while my old Mac had already been upgraded to Leopard.
I started the new Mac using a Leopard install CD (holding down the C key while starting). Then I chose to restore from a Time Machine backup instead of installing from CD, and soon had a functioning Leopard installation on the new Mac. Well, almost.
Next I used Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition on the new drive. The old Mac's partition was only 10 GB in size, but I made the new one 31.9 GB in size (so I could stay under the Windows limit of 32 GB for FAT partitions). I then quit without installing Windows.
On the old Mac, I used an external drive formatted as FAT and used Disk Utility to 'restore' my Windows partition to the external drive. Next I plugged that drive into the new Mac, and restored the external Windows partition to the new Mac's Windows partition. So far, so good. However, Parallels would not start this installation of Windows, and the new Mac would not boot into it (holding down the Option key at start-up did not show me a Windows drive).
I tried doing a repair of the Windows installation using a Windows install disk but that did not work. What did work was the following: I booted from the Window install CD, then started a new installation. I asked Windows to format the Windows partition on the new Mac, then powered off the new Mac as soon as Windows started copying files. Next, I rebooted the new Mac into Mac OS X, started Disk Utility, and again did a restore of the Windows partition on the external drive to the Windows partition on the new Mac.
The final step was to reboot the new Mac into Windows directly so that I could load drivers from the Leopard install CD. [I haven't done that yet, so I'm not sure it's necessary].
    Hope this helps!

Sounds solid to me. If the Glyph was connected on a firewire port that is. This would free up the bandwith that way but actually it is hardly an issue with the Duet considering the limited inputs. But using the Glyph as a backup for your projects is good wise idea anyway.

  • Any tips for upgrading from LR4 to LR5

I am just about to attempt my upgrade from LR4 (student edition) to full-fledged LR5.   Any hints or tips on how to redirect LR4 directories, etc. to LR5?   Other tips for the install?   (Obviously, I've backed up my computer prior to starting.)
    Thanks!
    Rick

Your "full-fledged" Lightroom 5 will be no different than the student version of Lightroom 5, because there is only one Lightroom program. You'll have new features in Lightroom 5, of course. But don't expect anything extraordinary because there is no difference. All you have to do is install Lightroom 5. Since it is an upgrade, it will look for that serial number from your Lightroom 4, and then you will have to enter the new serial number for Lightroom 5. When Lightroom starts it will find your previous catalog and will offer to upgrade it to the appropriate format. The original Lightroom 4 catalog will be left as it was, and completely usable by Lightroom 4. After the upgrade process completes you should be able to see all the images and all the work that you did in Lightroom 4, but you will be using the new program. It's a very straightforward process.

  • Upgrading from PSE Version 10 to 11 on a new computer

I bought a new computer and, while at it, the new version of Photoship Elements 11 to replace 10.  The new version is supposed to provide ACR 7.2 support for the RAW files from my new Sony RX100 camera. (Turns out that version 10 can't take ACR past 6.7)
I'm not fond of the idea of a new interface, but will figure it out.
What mistakes will a common user like me make when upgrading and changing computers make?
I have been hoping for and trying to find an Adobe produced article or video on managing the transition seemlessly, but so far no luck.
    Suggesions please?
    Bill

There aren't any common mistakes, just a common confusion as to where everything went. You'll figure it out.
If you use organizer, repair and optimize your catalog on the old computer and make a full backup there, then restore to to the new computer.

  • I upgraded my iMac and need to switch license to new computer without access to old computer?

I recently upgraded my iMac and had Photoshop CS6 migrated to my new computer. I'm unable to use photoshop now since I wasn't able to uninstall the software on the old computer. How can I switch my license from one computer to the next without access to the old computer or the access code?

If you bought it from Adobe, your serial number should be under the Adobe ID you used to buy it. Even if you did not get it from Adobe, if it was registered with Adobe, the serial number would be under "My Products" including the serial number of the product you upgraded from.
You can download the CS6 installer from here: Download CS6 products

  • Upgrading from LR2 to LR5: Catalog file appears damaged.

I upgraded from LR2 to LR5. I also moved files from an older mac to a new storage drive and am running LR5 on a new mac. When I try to import & open lrcat2 I get the message that "catalog file appears to be damaged."
I tried optimizing lrcat2 on old computer but that didn't help. LR 2 runs fine on the old mac too. What is happening here??

    Hi,
try to select all images and export the images as "new catalog" (if availiable in LR2, I do no know). You need not to export previews and images itself.

Quicken is an example that the OP noted is important to her, too!
Intuit makes it very difficult to find this link?!
Everytime I want to find it to post it for someone else, I have to Google: "cnet quicken 2007 for lion" and then in top listed link: Topper Kessler's review for CNET, I find the direct link to Intuit
This program will work with Quicken 2005, 2006 and 2007 data files directly.  If you have a data file from an older version, such as I did, Quicken Deluxe 2002, you must use the PPC version of either Quicken 2006 or 2007 to update the data first; and then the data will work in Quicken 2007 for Lion.
For other PPC programs that require Rosetta, I installed Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7 in Lion:

  • Will I be charged for upgrade from OSX 10.7.4 version to 10.7.6 version?

Will I be charged for upgrade from OSX 10.7.4 version to 10.7.6 version?
When I check for the software upgrade on my Mac-book Air, it is showing that the above upgrade is available. Will it be charged? I am not asked the ‘ Apple ID’ before start of up gradation process , does that mean that such upgrades are free?
If yes, How much are the chargers for such upgrades?
    Thanks for your inputs.

    10.7.6 does not exist.
The next one will be Mountain Lion 10.8 and will cost a little amount.
The Mountain Lion is not an "update", but an "upgrade": a different OS: before installing you should check the compatibilty of your hardware and software.

  • Upgrading from a G5 iMac running Tiger to a new iMac.

I am upgrading from a G5 iMac running Tiger to a new iMac, can I use 32Gb SD Card to move iphotos, itunes, ivideos? If so, how do I do it and insure I keep slideshows, playlists etc. I have built in iphoto, itunes etc.

Your Tiger iPhoto library may need upgrading with a Apple Library updater tool before you can use it with iPhoto '11. Reference. More iPhoto help just in case.
Make sure that that SD card is an SDHC card, and not just an SD card, or it may not be readable in your new iMac.
Here is the layout of the iTunes 11.0.1 Music folder on OS X 10.8.2. It may vary from what you have on Tiger.
Read the following articles before you move your iTunes library from Tiger.
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder.
iTunes: What are the iTunes library files?
When you are satisfied that your iTunes content is moved over to Mountain Lion, you may wish to deauthorize the G5 from iTunes.
