Tips On Using Audio Filters To Good Effect

Im working on a documentary at the moment, and 98 percent of the time, my sound is great. Unfortunately, I had a great interview that was conducted in a place that was a bit noisy ( background street sounds, cars, etc...)
In the past, I've been able to get some good tips and tutorials on cleaning up the sound utilizing the filters in FCP. Any help or maybe a link to a good site that shows a bit of 'how-to' would be great.
YES, I know I need to watch how I record my sound!

Okay well I have to recommend the great Ken Stone for his audio filters tutorial
http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/basic_audio_filtertutoria.html
And also Audacity has a cool little feature for extracting very specific noises. You can read up on it here:

Audacity is a free download you can get here

  • Audio Filters  - Whats good!

Hey guys, heres another question, I suck at audio and what filters I should use to get certain sound. If I want the audio to sound like its coming from a phone or from a radio, what do I use? If I really want a sound like in the theatre, do I need a filter or just play with the db? Also, where should my db be at when someone is talking and when I'm playing music? Sorry if I have a lot of questions, I just think that it doesn't hurt to ask and the people on this site and this site itself is the best out there for answers.
    Thanks.

    Jason,
Your list of questions goes on and on ... perhaps you should stick to one or two questions per post. For a telephone or AM radio sound, try one of the EQ and/or shelf filters. You'll want to boost the high end and mid range a bit and reduce the low end.

Huh? Which theater? Carnegie Hall or your local cineplex?
where should my db be at when someone is talking and when I'm playing music?<<</div>
Depends on the voice and music in use. Since every voice is different and we don't know whether you're using rap or classical, there's no magic formula. You adjust levels, add compression or whatever it takes to sound good while you monitor your work on a decent set of nearfield monitors.

  • Possible to avoid scanning/using audio filters when FCP loads?

Hi. I have hundreds of audio plugins wich I never use in FCP. They use a long time to scan on FCP startup and I wondered if there was a way to turn them off/avoid loading them?

Also plugin manager from digital rebellion.  It's part of a very useful suite of tools.

  • URGENT AUDIO HELP NEEDED!! Suitable audio filters

I'm in desperate need of knowing what audio filters are good to reduce background noise for a film I'm making. I've got a basic DV camera that picked up a lot of wind the other day and I am trying to minimise the background noise so that I can pick up what people were saying.
Does anyone know what audio filters on Final Cut Express are suitable for doing this?
    Cheers

I have never found a way to filter out wind noise, and I don't think it is practicable. I think that the problem is that the frequency in wind noise is similar to the frequencies in most video audio, so you can't filter out the wind noise without damaging the rest of the audio.
The only solution seems to be to shoot on a windless day, or use a very directional mike, and/or have a wind sock that is effective. (Unless soemone else knows a way.)

  • Special effect audio Filters

I am looking for some special effects audio filters, ie. convert a recorded voice into a computer synthesised voice.
    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

You can do it in Soundtrack Pro if you have that.

  • Tips for film audio prep in Audition?

    Hello,
I shot a film using a Canon 5D Mark II and I was looking for some tutorials or tips on the recommended workflow for preparing the audio in Audition, which effects I should use, etc. This is dialogue audio from the actors.
I was planning on going through and cutting out hiss in-between the dialogue and normalizing. Any tips or links to info in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

It's probably not what you want to hear, but there's no single standard workflow or effects that always get used.
If I had a couple of bits of advice to give, it would be to get your location audio as good as you can to minimise the amount of post production processing you need to do.  This usually means NOT relying on an on-camera mic but, rather, hooking up a proper production mic on a fishpole and getting it as close to the actors as you can.  Relying on cheap mic at the camera position never gives particularly good results.
The other suggestion would be to always record a few minutes of atmosphere at every location so you can use this to provide a continuous background sound to cover the editing you do between angles and shots.
I've obviously not heard your audio, but I'd be careful about "cutting out the hiss".  This can give a very artificial atmosphere that comes and goes with the dialogue.  Normalise if you need to--but it's better to get the levels something near right on location.  Sometimes some EQ can help with the intellegibility of the dialogue if you do some judicious cutting of frequencies outside the main vocal range--but really every case is different and it's just a matter of using your ears rather than working to a "standard" set of effects and processes.

  • New Media Encoder Error: video and/or audio filters are missing...

My colleague reported this error popup window while using Adobe Media Encoder CC (up-to-date):
"video and/or audio filters are missing and the rendered output may not match the original"
I've been seeing similar errors the past few days. I can't remember if the wording was the same in the errors I saw, but the circumstances were the same.
I've never seen this popup error before the most recent CC update.
    Some background info:
I queued up multiple Premiere Pro pproj files as usual from within Premiere
without rebooting or deleting any cache or temp files or anything, I start the queue
I have no special plugins installed in Premiere. Vanilla CC install.
    Windows 7, 64-bit
This error doesn't tell me what audio/video filter(s) are missing. The output files, once I dismiss this warning, are perfect.
The major problem: It stops the queue dead in it's tracks. Sure, it might seem handy to stop and give you a warning, but when it's a false report and there's nothing wrong, it's killing us, because we queue up multiple files for encoding overnight, and we're not here to get the popups.
What is likely causing this? Is it a bug that this is appearing so frequently? Has anyone else experienced this besides my colleague and I?
    Thanks!

Update for anyone experiencing this issue:
We are still investigating the cause of the issue and would really like your help tracking it down. If you run in to it I would be happy to jump on the phone with you and preferably do a screenshare as well. If you want to run some tests for me, this is what may help us track it down:
    0. Please make sure you are updated to the latest version of Premiere Pro and AME, which at this time are Premiere Pro 7.2.1 and AME 7.2.
    1. Simplify the project. Create a copy of the project and eliminate anything in the project that isn't related to the sequence(s) you are exporting. Then run the encode again. If it still occurs, move to the next step. If it doesn't occur any more, repeat step one and only remove half of the unused items (sorry, this is giong to be a manual process). Rinse, repeat.
    2. Open your sequence in Premiere and press Cmd/Ctrl + A to select all clips in your sequence. Right click and select Remove All Effects. Export again. No repro? Go to step 4. If it still repros, go to step 4.
    3. Make all the media offline. Export again. No repro? Go to step 4. Repro? Go to step 5.
    4. Send me a message with as much detail as possible. Even better would be if you could provide me a copy of your project file.
Your help in tracking this issue down is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Video / Audio Filters not showing up in "Viewer" tab?

Hi, I recently re-installed Final Cut Express v4.0.1 after a hard drive crash.  Now the video and audio filters do not show up on the Viewer Screen.  They show up on the "Effects" menu tab (though video transitions do not).  I've attempted uninstall / reinstall and deleting preferences but still no luck.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

You may not have deleted the dodgy app fully as there are numerous hidden folders.
    Use this free app:-

Make sure only FCE is selected and click the Remove Selected button at the bottom.

  • Using Photoshop Filters in Premiere

Ok, maybe I'm just stupid, but I've searched all over the place several times and I can't find out how to do this.  Seems like it should be obvious and simple.  I just want to be able to use the filters from Photoshop (particularly paint daubs) in Premiere.  I read in the help file that you could copy filters you wanted to use universally into the Common Plugins folder, but in looking through the Photoshop Plugins folder, I can't find the files/filters I want to copy.  I've also looked for Third Party solutions, but everything I've found seems to be much more complex than simple filters.  Am I looking to do the impossible?
    TIA

there's a long list of video effects that I can apply (including Mosiac, Posterize and Texturize) in Premiere, just not the specific filters that I'm looking for
While the base names sound similar, if you check the file extensions of each, in each program, you'll see a big difference. Now, you could try renaming a copy of a PS Filter from .8BF to .AEX and see what happens. I'd not expect PrPro to even open, so remember where it is, as I'll bet that you will be quickly deleting it.
To get close to what you want, you'll need to get PS Extended and do the work in PS, then Export/Import to PrPro.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • **** snare flams using audio to score function!

    Hello,
I've been using audio to score function to trigger snare samples from the ex24 to mix in with a recorded audio snare track.
The problem is however the midi notes don't always exactly lock in with the audio resulting in random flams that I have to zoom in and move.
Have I got the settings wrong for this? (I think I used the preset for drums-fast)
Not sure if there is something I'm doing wrong, possibly the sensitivity?
    Thanks!

You've got to play with the settings, and yes, I get flams too. You have to zoom in, and clean up the audio to score process. It's good, but not perfect.
Superior has released a program called drum tracker , it will generate a midi file from an audio drumtrack file. It uses a series of filters to better pick out kik, hats, etc. It's better than Logic's, but Logic's function will still fill the bill (without having to spend extra $$$.
In fact, you can set up a similar EQ filter, to help Logic improve it's recognition of kick, snares, hats, etc. Create a eq for each drum you want to detect. If you were replacing drums all day long, the Superior drum tracker would be a good investment. If you do it only occassionally, stick to Logic's 'audio to score' feature .

  • Audio Filters for filtering out noise

Hi all! I'm fresh on FCE and doing pretty well thanks to these forums. I've found answers to most of my issues except this one. I have a video clip with a soft spoken person and air conditioning background noise. I've tried numerous filters and settings, but, I have NO experience with audio settings. Where would you suggest I start as far as a filter to use, and what settings to tweak? I was also going to use the "Gain" filter to boost her volume after I filter out the A/C. Thanks!!!!

    Try Effects>Audio Filters>3 Band Equalizer.
    This tutorial may assist:

A third party appliczatin like Sound Soap could be a better solution than FCE filters. Try a trial on your clip.

  • Realtime audio filters on Macbook?

I'm cutting at work on a MB Pro 17 running FCP 5.1.4 and I don't seem to be able to change audio filters in realtime on playback.
None of the audio effects are bolded in the Effects tab so does this mean that this system doesn't have the grunt to run audio in realtime?
    Thanks.

What hard drive are you using for play back on the MBP? If it's the system drive, time to get an external.

Is there a way to "loop" audio while I try audio filters?
    Thanks

    Yes.
    Toggle Loop to ON
Set an In and Out in the timeline then select Play In to Out.
If you can't find these commands in the Menu Bar or are looking for the keyboard commands, use Help.

  • HT3625 I don't have a "Use audio for:" menu in my system preferences

When I go to system preferences and try to follow all of the directions in the article, there isn't any menu or anything that says "Use audio for:" when I'm on the input tab of the sound preferences.  How can I get my MBP use the audio input instead of detecting it as an audio output?

    malcolm007,
Here is a pin description of the 4 pin connector, there impedence and shunting that needs to be taken into consideration, not to mention the response curve that this is optomized for,ie:headset mic response. There could be potential damaged cause by incorrect matching and shunting (shorting certain pins to ground) you might consider calling Apple and see what their response is. You can even try experimenting at your own risk, I myself can make no recomendation and would advise against it as you could risk damaging your device. I found no data that would allow an informed decision on my part. The audio quality would most likely be sub par for a music type of application anyways, as it is most likey optomized for the headset mic as prviously mentioned.
USB interfaces are cheap and most sound good and will definatly provide a safe and flexible way to get in.
    IMHO

  • Apple Audio Filters in Final Cut Pro

I'm posting this question here because I didn't receive any responses in the Final Cut Pro message area, and I thought given the nature of the questions, audiofiles that read this area might have an answer.
In Final Cut Pro there are two folders of audio filters, one called APPLE and the other FINAL CUT PRO.
I fully realize none of these filters have the power of programs like SOUNDTRACK PRO.
However, I'm in a situation where I need to document what the filters do. I've already found all the material I need for the FINAL CUT PRO filters. However, I can't find any information anywhere on the APPLE category of filters.
    My questions:
#1 - Does anybody know why the APPLE audio filters are seperated out from the Final Cut Pro filters? How are they different generally?
#2 - Does anybody know where I can find documentation on what each of the APPLE category of audio filters do? I can't find it in the Final Cut Pro Manuals or Diane Weyland books. I found some Ken Stone tutorials on line, but they don't address the APPLE filters.
#3 - And many of the APPLE audio filters seem to be near duplicates in the Final Cut Pro audio filters, so what's the point in having two versions?
Any info at all or a direction to look would be appreciated.
    Thanks so much.

As of Leopard I was surprised to find that the Apple system plug-ins, and those that are supplied with the FCP suite are not AU plug-ins in the old sense of what a plug-in used to be. They no longer exist as a file anywhere in the system as they used to. Audio Unit plug ins formerly used to exist in Library/Audio/Plug ins/Components - now they are build into the Leopard operating system.
Any third party plug-in you purchase will still be installed in the "old" way.
Sorry, I can't remember where that documentation exists. Probably in the developer docs somewhere.
