Tips overclocking 915GM speedster-FA4

Intel
hai there,
this mobo is a good one even they're not the best on the oc.
i manage to run @ 166mhz with sacrifice the onboard ich 6 r and replace it with a pci sil 3112 and did it even with a 180mhz oc but hiks hiks hiks my proc need a higher voltage than the standard 1.35 and this mobo wouldn't let me change the vcore(hiks hiks hiks). i hope with the new bios i can change the vcore(pleaseeeee).

Yes it´s an interesting MoBo, ( I´ve been thinking about it for my P-M 730 cpu), however mATX "server"-boards does not normally have all OC settings like ordinary desktop boards.
What bios are you running at the moment  ? Latest 1.13 have an OC fix ;
Version    1.13    Update date   2005-9-16
Update Description   1. Fixed bug that may not Over Clock with SATA drive

I have flashed the BIOS to the new 1.13 from the site, but still have problems with overclocking and the SATA HDD.
When I go above 165FSB, I no longer have SATA drives visible in the BIOS, and the system tries looking for another boot disk.
Is there anyone out there who has overcome this problem, or is there a newer 'beta' BIOS available to overcome this problem?

  • 915GM Speedster-FA4 - ICH6 or ICH6R which one?

    Hi
I recently purchased 915GM Speedster-FA4 based setup. I was planning to set it up with raid0 and lived in impression that this motherboad has built in support for it (ICH6R). Manual states that MB is equipped with "optional ICH6R" southbridge, but there isn't any kind of mention how to enable it. There are also whole section about setting up the raid. But of course document starts with enabling raid in BIOS and at least my version (v1.13) doesn't have any options to do this.
So the question is, does this motherboard have raid support or not, and if there is how to enable it?
    Thanks

  • 915GM Speedster-FA4 Help needed.

I have tried to put together a system based on the 915GM Speedster-FA4 motherboard.
     But it just wont post.
I have installed CPU and memory and PSU, nothing else.
I have tried two different CPUs, both 400Mhz Dothan, one SL8BA and one SL7GL
Can anyone confirm that they are compatible with the 915GM Speedster-FA4 motherboard?
     The Jumpers are:  J4 (not connected), J5 (2-3 connected), J6 (2-3 connected)
I have tried both DDR1 and DDR2 memories (not at the same time)
Using a 20-pin PSU. I will try to swap PSU, but after that I have run out of ideas
Is it possible to get any diagnostics from this board???
    Advice please!

  • 915GM Speedster-FA4 - works with DDR2 667MHz?

    Hi folks,
first of all: sorry for my English - hope you'll understand me
    I've bought a 915GM Speedster-FA4, I will run a P-M 750 on it.
    Now I'm looking for RAM.
DDR2 400MHz / 533 MHz is supported by the board, but will also 667 MHz RAM run?
(manufacturer will be Corsair, model: value-ram DDR2 667 MHz)
    I don't have any experience with DDR2 - but e.g. in many
boards with DDR 333MHz support I ran 400 MHz without any problems.
    Thanks a lot!

"DDR2 400MHz / 533 MHz is supported by the board, but will also 667 MHz RAM run?"
should be not a problem, board should accept 667Mhz stick(s) or higher rated and will run it as 400 or 533. if you using 2 memory sticks ensure they are same brand & specification.

  • 915GM Speedster-FA4 , banias CPU support

Does the MSI 915GM Speedster-FA4 motherboard support Pentium M Banias CPU?
I think that Celeron M (100MHz FSB series) are similar to Pentium M Banias, but to be confirmed.

Dothan is newer than Banias. ... so I'm not sure...

  • 915GM Speedster-FA4

i have not purchased this motherboard but i am buying a new pcie card and i dont want to upgrade my current Pentium 4 (socket 478) to a new one and this was the ONLY s478 pci express motherboard that i could find.  So i am wondering if my P4 will work with it because under supported processors it says " Supports Intel® Pentium® M Dothan/Celeron® M Dothan processors in 478-pin package ". Does that include my processor? And also the only place i could find this board sold ONLY the board and not the driver cds and cable etc so when i tried to find a driver download i was unsuccessful as well so if someone could point me in the right direction i would really appreciate it. Thanks

You are correct, your proc is not supported.

...Where can i get a board that does i have looked everywhere. Thanks for the reply.
Here are the boards that support P4 478 procs, none of which support PCI-e.  I am not aware of any PCI-e board that supports P4 478 procs.

  • HELP!!!!! 915GM Speedster-FA4 PCIe x1 slot not working - SORTED

Hi, I am at my whit’s end with this motherboard, I cannot get the PCIe x1 slot to work. When I use the PCIe x16 slot it recognises the option card OK but the x1 slot will just not see it.
I know the network socket 1 needs to active for the PCIe x1 slot to work.
    Any help would be appreciated.
SORTED - IRQ clash with the onboard boot ROM for Lan socket 2 - NOT DOCUMENTED - MSI PLEASE TAKE NOTE

Sorry there is no MSI in here....

  • 915GM Speedster - Reboot Problem

    Hi,
I've got a problem with my 2 Speedsters:
After shutdown the computer reboots after 3-5 seconds again?!
I've disabled "wake up by pci card" - but the problem still exists.
Seems to me that is a configuration problem, because the problem exists on 2 systems.
    (Both Speedster, one with P-M 740, the other with P-M 750, 1 / 2 gigs of DDR-2-Ram, one with onboard-graphic, one with an EAX1950pro...)
Both boards have the 1.13 bios version...
I've tested also a bunch of power supplies, but this also didn't help :(
    Thanks

try switch between S1/S3 power state modes.
    re-test.
can be software & driver related too.
have a look here as well:

  • 915GM speedster motherboard for Pentium M mobile CPU's confusion

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone could advise me, the motherboard has a jumper J6 to alter the cpu voltage between 1.5 volts and 1.8. But none of the pentium M processors use these voltages (they are between 1volt and 1.48).
What do people set this too. Also regarding this jumper which is the number one pin? there are no markings at all on the motherboard. Do I assume that the drawing showing the settings in the manual is orientated correctly, in relation to the motherboard layout drawing. I am unable to get the motherboard to boot properly, the most I can get is a logo page for a few seconds before the board shuts down. This is with a 1.8Ghz pentium M dothan. With other cpu's the board is dead.
I have tried the following without success.
two different power supplys (both known good ones of more than adequate wattage)
    4 different CPU's 1.8, 1.6, 1.5Ghz, pentium M's  all 400Mhz FSB .nd a Celeron M 1.4.
both ddr 2 and ddr 1 memory (I know you can only use one type at once)
Could anyone having this board please let me know the settings they have used for jumpers J4,J5 and J6
and which CPU they are using.
I am waiting delivery of some 533 FSB pentium M,s so hopefully I will have more luck. I have always had good results with MSI boards and want to be sure before I return it.
    Thanks.

I believe I have resolved the problem. The board was doing a thermal shutdown. I must admit to not being familiar with Intel Pentium P4 boards, When they were current I always bought AMD Athlons for cost and performance reasons.
The board has what I believe to be a standard P4 heatsink mount, so I used a what I believe was a standard p4 heatsink and fan. But the heatsink was not contacting the cpu, I have now used another heatsink with a raised "Platform" on the base. I am certain this is contacting the CPU as I can feel it rocking on the the CPU itself before I fit the retaining clamps. The other heatsink had a totally flat bottom so was sitting on the mounting frame not the CPU. I am very lucky that the thermal cutout worked, I sincerely hope this has prevented any damage to the CPU. If it had been an Athlon I would have been in the market for a new CPU as I don't think they had a thermal cutout. The board has been displaying the BIOS PC health status all the time I have been writing this and it has settled to a steady 36 degree CPU temperature. I feel foolish that I did not work this out sooner, I do not want to break things. Although the chip was cheap enough (I got a batch of 4 for £7.71 in total including postage) I pride myself in taking care and doing a good job. I can only say in my defence that the heatsink mounting frame prevented me from seeing if the heatsink was seated correctly. I will be building this board up as a media center, the low noise and power consumption will be ideal. I may look to add a basic passively cooled graphics card so that I can have an HDMI output to connect to my TFT telly.
I very much appreciate your help and I will try to support this forum in the future.

  • 915GM Speedster F4 Ram Problem

    Hi everybody,
I have a little problem with this great motherboard...
The Dual Channel is not activated with 2 X 512Mo DDR 400MHZ.
The ram is detected as 333MHZ and the dual channel is deactivated...
Thanks very much for your answer.

The board only supports DDR333 and DDR-II 400/533 memory. That's why your 400MHz memory is detected as DDR333. I'm not sure but it seems that dual channel is for DDR-II only. At least my 2x Spectek 512mb DDR-II 533 works fine with dual channel and 1.13 BIOS. I haven't tried the dual channel with DDR though.

  • Pci Promise card problem on Speedster FA4

Well after finaly sorting all my other problems. A new one turned up.
Promise PCI Ultra133 TX2 card. I have used this card a long time
and it has been working great. Latest bios and everything.
I have tried everything I can think of and nothing works, as a final
solve to this problem is to get new SATA drives. I am not happy
    about that :(
I can't get the computer to boot beyond the startup point (i know this is
a bios issue). Everything works fine, the pci card is detected, windows
finds it and all settings in bios are standard more or less.
The problem turns up when I connet a IDE drive to the card. Everything
works fine and the BIOS on the card detects the harddrives, then the computer
continues on to boot up the system, and there it stops. I have tried
to disable most things in bios as I read someone in here had problems with a
TV card and they got that working by shutting down things in the system.
I am going to get another card in hops that it will work, if not, I guess I have
to get new SATA harddrives, that suck. After all this is a server card motherboard
more or less, if you can't use PCI cards what is the point?
I think this problem could be fore SCSI and other pci cards as well.
    Anyone ? ideérs

You mean it stops somewhere during Windows boot?
Did you edit the boot.ini to make sure Windows loads from the right controller?
It's not just a controller/driver matter, Windows needs to have the proper settings in the boot.ini on where to load from.
Also, it could be the card is fighting with other things on the board.
This typicaly happens to controllers like Raid and/or IDE-cards that have their own boot-bios.
