Tips to improve Latency?

Hey,
I decided to post this as a seperate topic as its a seperate issue concerning me when trying to set up my Mackie Onyx 1620 with Logic Express on my Macbook.
There is a milli second of delay between when i pluck the guitar string and when i hear it on my head phones. This makes it pretty useless when playing to a metronome. How can i solve this problem? Baring in mind i want to record up to 8 tracks at once, and preferably have the ability to record all 16 at once with out this delay in sound, id much appreciate if it can be fixed!
Thank you so much,
Steve.

have you reduced the buffer settings? That should do the trick - go to audio hardware and devices under the main :audio: menu. Then reduce it to whatever works best on your system - i can live with 128 and at a push 256....but 64 might be what you're looking for.
Also turn off software monitoring (although this means you won't be able to hear any of the effects on your audio tracks)
Audio > Audio Hardware & Drivers > Software Monitoring
AFAIK there is always some latency apparent, the trick is to get it as low as possible without overloading your system.
hope that helps

    Often a 'clean install' will reduce the boot time of a MBP.  Please look at these instructions and decide if this will be right for you.  Note that user data should be backed up before exercising this option.

  • Tips to improve speed? AX + AE in WDS

    First, my network setup. I have a Verizon FiOS Actiontek router with the wireless radio turned off. I have an ethernet cable from that to an airport extreme (802.11g + modem). The airport extreme is configured as a bridge, relying on the FiOS router to assign IP address. That is all upstairs in my office. Downstairs I have an Airport Express (802.11n) configured as a WDS remote.
    Everything is working fine and reliably. My issue is with speed. I'm paying for a 20M down, 5M up from Verizon. With my Mac Pro connected directly to the upstairs AE via ethernet, and using the speakeasy speedtest, I get the full 20/5. When I use my macbook downstairs connected to the AX, I get maybe 2M/300k.
    I turned off interference robustness on both, jacked the transmit rate up to 11, turned off airtunes, and some other suggestions I read online to boost speed. That got me up to 6M/1M.
    Any other tips to improve speed? Ideally I'd like to get the full 20M/5M everywhere in the house but I understand there is some serious overhead in a WDS network. Do you think 10M/2M would be feasible?
    By the way, the AX is separated from the AE by 1 floor (almost directly below) and it is inside a cabinet.

    You're going to be somewhat limited on what can be done to "improve" the wireless bandwidth with the WDS. At best, I would expect that you may get up to 30 Mbps for bandwidth on the extended local network.
    One thing to try is to temporarily take the AX out of the cabinet to see if this provides an improvement. You want the best signal possible between the base stations. You may also want to use a utility, like iStumbler, to calculate the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) at the location of the AX. You may be surprised on how a small change in position, can improve the SNR. The higher the SNR value, the "better" the signal.
    Let me know if you need further instructions on how to calculate SNR.

  • Need tips on improving a live recording

    I realize that this question could have a million different answers, based on circumstances. What I'm looking for is something very basic to get me headed in the right direction.
    I recently participated in a gig that was recorded live in a bar. The songs have been broken down into separate files, so I can drag a song into a GarageBand track and work on it there. I want to use any number of the available AUs to improve on the sound.
    The main problem with the recording is that the lead vocal mic was set too high, and the recording mic was set too close to the PA speaker. The result is that the lead vocal drowns out the rest of the band. I need to come up with a way to put that lead vocal back a bit and bring up the rest of the band. I have had some success utilizing the EQ AUs in GarageBand. Just wondering if there is anything else I should be looking at?
    I realize that I will never be able to get a fantastic sounding end result (bad initial recording, garbage in...garbage out, etc.), but feel I might be able to make things somewhat better.
    Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

    This was a very useful tip, and something I would not have thought of on my own. Just apply the same theory and procedures that I use when recording myself on multiple tracks. Makes sense! I was able to make some improvement to the original live recordings, but still could not get them to where I liked them. Not much to work with from the start... garbage in, garbage out, as they say!

    Hi Meeta,
    1) Why do you need to UPDATE standard infotype tables with UPDATE command. Please use HR_INFOTYPE_OPERATION Function module for the same and then think of performance tunning.
    2) To me program design doesn't look good, If you are using Logical database below SELECTs are not required as data will be automatically populated in P0002, P0021 Internal tables once GET PERNR is executed.
    *Not Required*
    select pernr subty objps favor fanam from pa0021 into corresponding fields of table it_21
    select * from pa0002 into corresponding fields of table itab
    for all entries in gi_emp_tab
    where pernr eq gi_emp_tab-pernr
    and nachn not like 'EE%'.
    Hope this helps.

  • Tips For Improving Face Detection Accuracy

    These are some rules I have slowly discovered that have helped improve the accuracy of iPhotos' face detection.
    a. Don't force iPhoto to recognize *+every single+* instance of an individuals face. (If you need to create a location containing every instance of an individual, then you need to setup a Smart Folder using the persons' name as a Description or Keyword. "Faces" is not the section to do this. See a suggestion below for using "Faces" to do this.)
    b. Avoid confirming really poor quality examples of a persons face (low light, pixelated, off in the distance, etc)
    c. Avoid confirming only partially visible faces (hair covering half the face, head turned away to a profile, extreme angles too high or too low, etc)
    d. Avoid too many instances in which the person's eyes are closed. (Obviously, sunglasses are a real problem here as well)
    e. Avoid instances where the persons head is tilted 45 degrees or more, unless the software recognizes the face on it's own.
    f. Avoid instances where the face has areas of heavy shadow, and the light source is at right angles to the face. (Outdoors with Sun directly overhead or near horizon.) If face is in an "even" shadow that seems to be OK.
    g. Clearly, the more full frontal, clearly lit views of an individuals' face you can include, the better the face detection will be.
    h. If you do use the "Add Missing Face" button, then restrict the selection box to just around the eyebrows, nose and mouth. Avoid selecting the whole head since the face detection software concentrates on the features in the center of the face. No need to include the hair as it does not appear to be a factor.
    *Gathering Every Instance of a Persons' Face*
    Here is how you could use "Faces" to gather every photo of an individual, yet maintain its' face detection accuracy. Mind you, this may only be practical with relatively small libraries, not libraries with 10's of thousands of photos.
    1. First, go ahead and name *+every instance+* of an individuals' face (Even poor quality examples).
    2. Then, within the "Faces" corkboard section, open that persons' album and "Select All" of their photos (Do this before the Faces scan is complete or you will also select all of the suggested faces under "So-and_So may also be in the photos below")
    3. Next, create "New Album from selection..." and give it the name of the person. (Alternatively, you could "Batch Change..." all the selected photos with a "Description" using the persons' name and then use a "Smart Album" to gather all of the persons' photos. This could be handy for adding future photos of the person automatically to the Smart Album.)
    4. Once that is complete, now "Reject" all poor quality, or partially visible examples of the persons' face within Faces. This will improve the software's future accuracy at detecting the persons' face in new photos added to the library.
    If, at a future date, you add another large group of photos containing that persons' face, you can repeat steps 1 & 2 and simply drag all the photos to the persons' Album. Or "Batch Change..." the Description again to automatically include the newly added photos to the Smart Album you created earlier.
    In the end I have discovered that the Faces section of iPhoto is really more a "tool" for creating Albums, rather than a destination for viewing photos.
    Hope this helps. Feel free to add any suggestions you have discovered for improving the face detection accuracy.
    Cheers

    Apparently you shouldn't worry too much about what you select for the face area when using "Add Missing Face"... From Apple's knowledgebase at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3427:
    Note: Only faces that have been automatically detected in your photo library will help iPhoto match faces. Manually identified faces will not aid iPhoto's face-matching ability.
    So, unless they later come out with an update that actually uses that data, any effort you make in selecting especially accurate face regions is going to waste. (Though I'll admit I'm still putting in the effort in the hope that the data will someday be used for something in a future version of iPhoto...)

  • Performance is bad wile using qaaws in xcelsius - tips to improve?

    Post Author: RMS
    CA Forum: Xcelsius and Live Office
    Hi,
         Im using qaaws as the source for my xceslsius dashboard.
    I am able to create and fetch data using the web services and also display it in components in my model.
    However, the performace is really BAD! Does anyone know how to tune up qaaws performance? Another strange thing that is happening is, when i have my xcelsius up and running, and i click on the web service connector, if i also have a deski query runnning at the same time,  my web service takes FOREVER to show a change in the model. Its almost like nothing is  happening.
    Does anyone know what qaaws and BOXI services have in common? Does qaaws alos have to be managed thru the CCM or the CMC? (server, etc?)
    ANY help will be appreaciated!!
    Thanks!!

    Jason,
    This may not apply to your dashboard, depending on the nature of the data you're bringing back, but I try to minimize the number of separate queries by combining all the ones with the same 'shape' into one query.  For example, if you have several queries bringing back 12 rows - one for each of the past 12 months, you can combine them into a single query with multiple columns.  You can then make use of Excel functions such as VLookup to pick out the particular columns needed for displaying each chart.  You can also click on the 'row' line in the data manager to outline the entire area being brought back, rather than having to do each column individually.
    Again, this may not be applicable for your needs, but I've also found that I could eliminate using query parameters by bringing back a larger amount of data into the spreadsheet in the initial load and then using the Excel functions to pick up the data being requested in the user controls for displaying in the charts.  Using that monthly example above, for instance, you could bring back several years worth of data (at a cost of only 12 rows / year in the spreadsheet), and then use the lookup functions to bring up the year requested in a user control.
    Hope those ideas help,
    Peter

  • Tips or Improvements for my Bitlocker Encryption Test Script

    Hi Guys,
    I just finished a little script to check if a drive is encrypted with Bitlocker. I wanted to post it here to see if anyone had some constructive criticism.
    Here you go:
    $computer = import-csv C:\scripts\bitlock3.csv
    $namespace = "root\CIMV2\Security\MicrosoftVolumeEncryption"
    Foreach($line in $computer){
    $a=GWmi -class Win32_EncryptableVolume -computername $line.comp -namespace $namespace
    $BitStat=$a.ProtectionStatus
    If ($bitstat -eq 1) {Write-host $line.comp "is encrypted"}
    Else {Write-host $line.comp "is NOT encrypted"}

    You're very welcome.
    This adjustment removes all Write-Output statements and replaces them with a hashtable of the computer name and encryption status. Objects are created from those hashtables, they're then sorted by status to have 'NOT Encrypted' appear at the top of the output
    CSV, and then sorted by computer name (just a habit of mine):
    $namespace = 'root\cimv2\Security\MicrosoftVolumeEncryption'
    Import-Csv C:\Scripts\bitlock3.csv | ForEach-Object {
    $computerName = $_
    try {
    $status = Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_EncryptableVolume -ComputerName $computerName -Namespace $namespace -ErrorAction Stop
    if ($status.ProtectionStatus -eq 1) {
    $props = @{
    ComputerName = $computerName
    Status = 'Encrypted'
    } else {
    $props = @{
    ComputerName = $computerName
    Status = 'NOT Encrypted'
    } catch {
    $props = @{
    ComputerName = $computerName
    Status = "ERROR - $_"
    New-Object PsObject -Property $props
    } | Sort Status -Descending | Sort Name | Export-Csv .\bitlockerStatus.csv -NoTypeInformation

  • Cast in DMM integrated to IPTV----need some tips to improve the channel streams through 4400 DMP. Now the channel streams look little pixelated. Video not sharp...

    Hi,
    Some one kindly suggest a solution for the below issue.
    In one of my customer places we are using the Cast module in DMM 5.2.2 to integrate with the IPTV.
    So the IPTV channel streams when it comes to the LCD its not sharp.
    The feeds are a bit pixelated and also the scrolling news texts from the IPTV channels looks a little weird.
    When we browse the channels using the remote from the Menu the streams coming on the small window on the LCD screen is good but when we put the video to full-screen this pixelation happens.
    The streams are decoded using 4400 DMP and using HDMI connection.
    The receiver used is D9854 and the DCM used is D9900.
    I tried by changing the DMP display parameters but this was not resolved.
    We checked the DCM parameters and verified. The DCM parameters are correct and  when we stream the channels using VLC on our laptop the stream is good.
    So I kindly request to suggest some of the rectification techniques and as such we can resolve this

    JD - I appreciate the feedback - as an update, the customer is still adamant that the DMP is to be used only for digital signs and that now he expects Cast to run on all his PCs (I'm thinking Show and Share is the solution for this).  I try to only "know what I know" and not assume certain things - but this language seems pretty clear:
    "Features of Cisco Cast help your organization to deliver video-on-demand and live broadcast TV channels over IP networks to presentation systems that you connect to DMPs."
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_2/dmm/user/guide/cast/welcome.html
    To me that implies that cast delivery is done explicitly through DMPs but doesn't come out and *say specifically* such - but the way I remember doing it - you just publish your Cast setup to the DMP - there is no "cast server" that you can browse to per se and manipulate the guide, etc in that manner.  I'm always open to the idea that there's something I don't know - the IT business has humbled me many times - but this seems awfully straight forward to me.
    I'm stuck with the 2200's for cast - I have to try and make them work.  I assume the procedure is to link a stream to a multicast group address, then configure that as a channel target within Cast?  Never done it for real before - need to know by tomorrow ~noon.  Is there any reason why the 2200s would simply NOT work?
    Have you had success with remote control emulation?  I don't even know if the customer has UCM, but I have been informed that Cast is controllable by a mouse or keyboard (another assertion I'm 99.999% is incorrect) so I need to quit worrying about a remote.
    If I sound terrified, it's because I am.  Thanks for all the help.  I'm not confused yet because so far I've been right about everything I think I know, but when expectations don't line up with reality, that's when things get uncomfortable.

    Any websites, videos, tutorials, books that I can hit?
    Thanks for your time.

    The two images are not a good comparison because the clover is much larger, has no text, and is a .jpg using more color info ( gradient ) than the image you've created. Any text that small is going to end up grainy. Try using a larger and bolder font for "HAPPY BIRTHDAY". Use fewer bubbles and make them larger. The Light Blue and Orange color is bad contrast, perhaps the green from the clover on your comparison sample would be a better choice. The color quality itself is not bad and appears to be bright enough. I printed your image and the orange POPS. The Light Blue falls flat and is hardly visable. Try saving a few using different color settings ( i.e., rendering intent, RGB profile ) as .jpg's via save-for-web or Illustrator Export.
