Tired of Bootcamp. Is there any "virtual drive software" Mac compatible?

I have been using bootcamp for my MS Windows needs (Quicken and AutoRoute only) and have become tired of the necessity of rebooting for every instance of need. I have heard that some mac users have found a software that establishes a virtual drive (on which to install Windows), as a file in the Mac OS. Does anyone know of such animals and if they're certified by Apple?

Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

sure pretty simple. make a backup of your current settings

Is it safe to format ANY external drive to Mac OS Extended?

Some Seagate tech told me a while back that Seagate drives should ONLY be formatted with their proprietary formatting and that my data is vulnerable if I use something else. (I may have misunderstood this, but I'm 98% certain that's what he said.) I do remember him saying not to use the Mac's Disk Utility to format the drive.
I want to reformat this drive so that it's 100% compatible with my new Mavericks iMac.
Is there any concern about formatting ANY external drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Or are there some hard drives that should not be formatted to Mac using Disk Utility?
I'm under the impression that all external drives are basically the same and I can format them however I want. No drive is "made" to be formatted with a certain OS or a certain format.

Formatting a drive simply will remove any data currently stored on it. There is no such thing as "proprietary formatting." Drives come out of the factory with no formatting.
Whatever the person told you it was patently wrong not to mention mis-informed.
To use a hard drive properly with any computer it needs to be formatted with the tool that is required for the operating system with which it will be used. For the Mac you use Disk Utility (the tool) and you format the drive using Mac OS Extended, Journaled (the format.)

No, there are no gurantees. The capabilitty exists to retrive deleted data from an iPhone, but like many things in life it is not 100% successful all the time. Be careful, there are a lot of scam artists out there. They take your money & retrive nothing. This guy is one of the best in the business, but he does not work for people in the private sector. Any version control software, like CVS, allows for line-to-line comparison of different versions of the same file. The problem with reports is that to understand differences you need to save the reports in human readable format that can be REX-file.

There might be something there that is at least similar to the app your looking for.
edit: There is one shareware that is an iTunes plugin called Multi-tunes. With it you can create multiple iTunes libraries, one library called "Main" one called "Bootlegs" etc, and Multi-Tunes will allow you to quickly switch between them from within the iTunes window. Not exactly what your looking for but close.

Check how many applications are starting when you log in, I found that if there was a lot of activity at login Finder did not display the icons on the desktop correctly, again like you it did not occur at every login, just occasionally.
For Safari have you tried resetting Safari, if that does not help you could disable plugins and extensions one at a time. You may find one of those is causing the problem.

I have a Personal Video Recorder (Humax HDR-1010S), which supports DLNA, connected to my home network via Wi-Fi.
I want to play music from iTunes and view photos from iPhoto from my MacBook (which is also connected to the home network) via the PVR / TV / Home Cinema sound system. I understand that my MacBook (running OS X Mavericks) doesn't support DLNA server.

My recollection is that the iPhoto library has some fairly robust protections to prevent inadvertent or even deliberate changes being made that might have unwanted consequences. I'll take alook at my setup and let you know if I can see anything that might help you. Even if you get Serviio to "see" the iPhoto library, it almost ceratinly won't show the album structure and names. What I did is to export each iPhoto album to a standard folder with the appropriate folder name. These I keep on an external backup disc and Serviio can see these without trouble.

There is a hardware simulator call "hercules" (http://www.hercules-390.org/) but it comes without z/OS (or any other OS). On top, IBM does not allow to run z/OS on the emulator but only on their hardware. On the the mailinglist, however, there were in the past a few people able to technically make OS/390 or z/OS to run. Some time ago I played with this emulator and installed z-Linux (31-bit).
z/OS is VERY different to everything you may have seen before, it requires a huge amount of special knowledge.

You can set times for your computer to turn on or wake from sleep in the Energy Saver system preference pane using the Schedule... button.

Is there any way to software trig on 4-8 channels, if possible with different threshold on each channel?

I am working with a modified version of the example "Acquire N - Multi-Analog Software Trig.vi" in Labview. The example retrieves data from 6 input channels each time an analog trigger occures. Is there any way to software trig (if possible with different treshold on each channel) on all channels in a logical OR-function?

Unfortunately you can only configure a trigger for a single channel. You could, in software, create a multiple-channel software trigger, but it will not be nearly as efficient.
Here is what you could do. You could call the the AI Start VI and AI Read VI in a while loop like the "Acquire-N-Multi-Analog Software Trig VI" but you would not be able to use the conditional retrieval part of the code. Initially, you could read only a few values from each channel and be comparing those values to each individual threshold within the loop. When all of the values have reached the thresholds, you could change (increase) the amount of values being read by AI Read.
This method would always be reading from the channels, but would not be returning a lot of data until all of
the channels have reached their threshold. Just a suggestion. I hope this helps.

is there any external storage that is compatible with the ipad2

the Wifi storage options are interesting but it seems they only allow to read files from the device on the iPad but not transfer files to the storage device via WiFi.
I'm looking for a possibility to use the iPad for photography while traveling, without the access to a computer.
Shooting photo's in RAW format crates pretty big files that will fill up the iPad's memory pretty fast if you shoot a lot during a (let's say) month long trip.
my idea was to use load the photo's to the iPad so i could view them and sort out any bad ones. then copy them over to the storage device so i can continue using my CF cards for shooting. I have an image thank for copying the photo's directly to the HDD but it would be so sweet to be able to check them on the iPad before hand.
any suggestions?
