Tired of this overheating problem - anyone have an answer???
hey all - i'm totally fed up with this problem i hope someone can suggest something new...
i have the first gen macbook pro 17" 2.16 Core Duo (not C2D). over the last year it has had increasing problems with overheating... at a certain point the graphics (screen) will freeze - altho sound will continue - and a hard reboot is necessary. the only way i can make it thru a movie streamed on hulu for example is to have the fans running at approx 5-6000 rpm - i use SMC Fan Control for this. Expose is completely unusable as it leads to freezes probably 75% of the time, for the first two years this never happened. this is also a problem with DVD's altho less so for some reason... anyway, i became more and more frustrated with this problem - it began to happen when i was just using Photoshop heavily.
so i decided to reapply the thermal paste - this went off without a hitch, i applied a thin and even layer and noticed a slight change in temp, maybe a couple of degrees - maybe
last week i found out about Coolbook which i installed and have been using... i have to say the documentation for this app ***** and i have to wonder if i've set it up correctly...
but in any case i'm pretty **** frustrated...
why should a $2500 machine become nearly unusable after just 3 years?? i've had thinkpads that were 6 years old that worked better. my folks Dell's are probably 4-5 years old and have no problems... so what the ****? why should i have to run all this software which only partially helps, take out my **** logic board reapply thermal paste and STILL have this problem??
am i the only one?

i'd love a solution to this. so i can stop having to watch movies using my girlfriend's $600 HP laptop.

I've found that my MBP got hot simply because it was designed to keep the fans quiet; everyone loves super quiet computers... except when they get hot.
I tell you, I could have probably fried an steak on the top portion of my MBP.
I did some digging to try and find a way to control the fans myself. Since I use headphones most of the time (and used to own a gaming PC back in the day that, when running, sounded like a small jet taking off) so fan noise doesn't bother me.
I found a great little piece of freeware called smcFanControl: http://www.eidac.de/
Works like a charm. You can set the fans to run at certain speeds based on temperature or even have them run full tilt all the time. I have them set to run at a minimum speed of around 4200 rpm and hardly ever see temps go above 60C. If I'm working and have a pile of resource intensive apps open, I up the fans to max (6000 rmp).
My MBP will still get "warm", but not blisteringly hot like when I first got it.

If you have a very old Firefox version then you could consider to uninstall that version to clean up existing registry keys (especial the uninstall key).
Make sure NOT to remove "personal data" when you uninstall Firefox, because that will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
Check the Firefox program folder and remove the Firefox program folder if there are still files left in it.

It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

Every time I sync my iPhone with iPhoto I end up getting duplicate photos on my iPhone. The other problem is that I can not delete the dups on my iPhone. Does anyone have an answer to this problem?
Mike whether I create a folder within the Pictures Folder that iTunes uses to sync photographs or just copy them into the main folder the result is the same, I end up with Photo Library plus another album containing an identical set of pictures as contained in Photo Library.

Create a album: When viewing albums, tap Edit, then tap Add. Select photos to add to the new album, then tap Done. Note: Albums created on iPhone aren’t synced back to your computer.

Delete an album Tap Edit, then tap the delete sign.
Yes I can Add a new Album, but cannot delete an album already created. The delete sign does not appear.
In iTunes the only folder that I can see listed is the man one into which iTunes stores pictures, which I have named iPhone Photos.
When I look on my PC this iPhone Photos folder contains another folder named iPod Photo Cache and a multitude of folders created by iTunes, the named F00, F01,F02 etc etc. and a Photo Database file.
Now whether I create a seperate folder within iPhone Photos to store my favourite photos in, or just copy them all into the iPhone Photos folder without being encased within another folder, or create a folder inside the iPod Photo Cache folder the result is the same ...
I end up with Photo Library plus another album containing an identical set of pictures as contained in Photo Library.
I am going around in ever decreasing circles here and getting nowhere fast!! -

dawniedoodleWhat time out thing with iTunes 9? You'll get better answers if you give as much detail as possible when asking a question, including any error messages you've received and any trouble shooting steps you've already taken. From your question, it's not at all clear what your problem is.

Settings >> Mail, Contacts. Calendars >> Organise by Thread. Switch to OFF to see every individual email in the Inbox.

Help. Photoshop CC14 on Mac 5k (2014) running Yosemite 10.10.1. Photoshop stops responding when I'm opening files, saving files or creating new ones. Is anyone suffering the same problem? Does anyone have an answer?
First, go install the MacOS 10.10 updates - you should be on 10.10.2.
I haven't heard of Photoshop not responding during opens and saves. Does it stop responding while the open/save dialogs are visible, or while Photoshop is actually reading or writing files?
10.10.1 did fix a crash in the open/save dialogs, but 10.10.2 still has some odd issues (mostly program errors coming from the OS code) in the open/save dialogs. -
I've just installed Mavericks on my Macbook Pro, which took forever to install, and everything appears to be fine except for iPhoto. When I try and open iPhoto I get a popup saying its not supported by this OS. Anyone have any ideas??? Help please.

i have gotten my email that me preorder of an album is ready.. clicked on the link and got brought right to the home page of the itunes store.. went on my computer and checked all the recent purchases but i still cannot find my "purchased" music anywhere.. does anyone have an answer for me? im really aggravated.. a nice answer of how to get my already paid for album would be GREATLY appreciated..

I have Premier Elements 12 and recently changed my computer to an iMac. I want to re-register my software on the iMac but the Adobe system won't let me. Anyone have an answer? Cheers Brian

I did not see your post 4 until after I had posted just now.
That is one of the drawbacks related to purchasing Premiere Elements as a download from Adobe...the download is specific to the Windows or Mac operating system to which it is downloaded. So all you have purchased that way are the installation files and a serial number for Premiere Elements 12 Windows. If you had purchased Premiere Elements 12 in the box packaging, that comes with a disc for Windows and a disc for Mac.
How long ago did you purchase Premiere Elements 12 Windows? If within 30 days of purchase, you can look into a 30 day money back from Adobe. But you cannot purchase the box packaging from Adobe. It only offers the download purchase from it. You would have to buy from an authorized reseller if you wanted the boxed purchase.
The way it is now, you will need to purchase new installation files and serial number for Premiere Elements 12 for your iMac.
That is the situation that I believe exists. More information if needed.

I upgraded to 2 - i4 phones with 2 different phone numbers. I can sign on to iCloud on 1 phone but never on the other. I have changed my my password twice but no matter what I do, I still have the same problem. I keep getting a message "Verification Failed The request timed out" no matter how many times I try to sign on it always times out. Before I upgraded to the i4, I had a i3GS and had the same exact problem. Does anyone have any ideas???
Firstly, go to http://iforgot.apple.com and sign in with the ID you use for iCloud. A new password will be sent to your associated email address.
If that doesn't work, for example because it's going to an address you can't access, then you will have to contact Support. Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password' and click 'Continue'. -
I've read the suggestions for fixing this, and none of them work. I've updated my .htaccess to match MIME types for .ogv, I've uploaded the files as both Binary and ASCII, neither method works. The .ogv file plays fine when you load it from a local file, but it will not play when viewed from a remote server. I've confirmed with my hosting company that the .htaccess and all other issues for HTML5 are up-to-date. Safari and Chrome play the HTML5 videos just fine, but Firefox will not. Does anyone have any concrete answers as to what the problem is. I'm also serving up the video files as .webm and .mp4, but neither of these formats works in Firefox either.
That can happen if the server isn't configured properly to send the files with a by Firefox supported MIME type.

Did you check via the Web Console which headers Firefox receives when requesting the .ogv file?
If that is OK then it is possible that the file is using an unsupported coding method.

I have used Mozilla for longer than INternet Explorer and think it's great. However, since installing Webroot Security Firefox has routinely started crashing. Not always in the same place or with certain sites, but randomly. I emailed Webroot who said it's not a problem they have encountered, but they issue reguar updates - blah blah.
I usually use Norton which is fine, but we have so many PCs / Laptops at home it made sense to buy a bigger licence product.Thank you thefourthbrother for providing the Firefox crash reports. After reviewing them this is indeed the result of a known Firefox bug which the Webroot Secure Browsing functionality is triggering but not the cause of:

Since there is currently no timeline provided by Mozilla as to when this bug will be addressed, Webroot is currently working on an alternate method to protect Firefox users which should eliminate the possibility of triggering this Firefox bug, and will provide this new functionality in an upcoming release.
In the interim those that encounter regular Firefox crashes with the Webroot Secure Browsing functionality enabled, and would prefer not to have this added malware protection for the time being, may disable the Webroot Secure Browsing feature in Firefox by going to Tools > Add-ons > and click the "Disable" button on the "Webroot malicious URL Filtering" extension.
An update to this post will be provided by Webroot when the new functionality Webroot is currently working on to prevent the possibility of such Firefox crashes going forward is deployed.
