  • Can Firefox be fixed to block tracking cookies even it the web site refuses to cooperate?

Too many web sites (e.g., New York Times, New Yorker, Google) do not honor the request to block tracking cookies. They add them back in within seconds after I delete them. Most of the added cookies are not, repeat not, from the owner of the website but are added via some agreement with the site owner. Most of these cookies are from sites having no connection with me or the site provider. Can or will Firefox provide an option to block all cookies inserted from the web site?

Firefox only sends a DNT=1 response header to the server.<br />
It is up to the server to decide what to do with that request.

  • How do I stop tracking cookies from respawning every time I open a Firefox window?

I'm in Firefox 21. I tried to delete my cookies, but when I close and reopen the "Show Cookies" window, all cookies have respawned, including many third party advertising cookies from sites I have never visited, sites such as 2o7.net, interclick.com, adlegend.com, and about a hundred others. This is in spite of the fact that I have "Accept third-party cookies" unclicked. How can I delete these advertising tracking cookies and ensure that they never come back?

Additional Detail: If I close all tabs and windows of Firefox, then the cookies do not respawn; the cookies window then remains empty. However, once I open a window and navigate to any page, they all come back.

  • Why are tracking cookies not blocked by Firefox when accept 3rd party cookies is unchecked?

I have unchecked 'Accept third party cookies' but my Norton keeps finding and then deleting tracking cookies on my system. What is the problem?

Hi TalktoWolf, I don't see anything especially unusual about the blog. Have you noticed any problems with Flash media on other sites?
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    1. Clear Firefox's Cache Completely
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
    2. Remove your tvo.org cookies in this dialog:
right-click this page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the box at the top of the dialog, change mozilla.org to tvo.org and remove those cookies
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

  • Why, after clicking that I don't wish to be tracked, am i still receiving tracking cookies and 3rd party cookies from websites? How is 5.0 an improvement if websites don't respect this?

ALL websites that i've visited have still placed tracking cookies, which i then need to individually delete after leaving their site.
They're not respecting that i don't want to be tracked, so what good is checking that box in my options?
Bring back NOT accepting cookies from 3rd parties. I don't need admanager, tacoda, etc cookies on my computer.
Also websites are displaying a js picture that i can't block. I block all pictures that contain people or animals for religious reasons.

Selecting the "do-not-track" setting will only make Firefox send a specific HTTP header (DNT=1) to a web server.<br />
It is up to the server to do something with that request.

  • Tracking Cookies

I've noticed on occasion that websites at the other end of some of the links some people post in their messages try to set tracking cookies when the forum page is loaded into the browser. Are tracking cookies from third-party websites allowed in the forums or is this an issue that is not addressed by the rules?

I see lots of posts recommending various software or sites to purchase hardware, or just links to sites with information (and sometimes promoting a product or advertising), but since in most cases the people posting don't have any financial interest in the company the disclosure statement doesn't apply.
That is a valid point. Even I do that from time to time, but I think there is a difference between recommending a well known product that you use but have no financial interest in and cookies coming from a free post-your-photo service that could be run by a spammer or other Internet marketing concern for the purpose of collecting user data. One of the more notorious spam kings has operated scores of such websites.
I also remember an incident a while back where a user on a particular forum ended all of his messages with a signature line that included a graphic linked to his website, which was setting cookies. He posted so often that he had messages on almost every thread in the forum, which meant he was able to track most of the users in that forum. I reported it and the graphic eventually disappeared.

  • How can I permanently delete tracking cookies?

I was alarmed to read the series in the series in the Wall Street Journal ( www.wsj.com/wtk ) about flash cookies, trackers, and beacons. I had always set my preferences (in Firefox) to not accept cookies, changing that only when I came to a site that required cookies (like Facebook), but then choosing the option to not accept 3rd-party cookies, changing my preferences after the visit, and deleting cookies.
I installed the add-ons suggested by the WSJ and on this website (Adblock Plus, Better Privacy, Ghostery, PrivacyChoice TrackerWater, and Taco. There is nothing in my Library>Preferences>Macromedia file. I visited the Adobe website and followed their instructions to delete flash cookies. Yet I cannot get rid of the cookies!
I tried this experiment: when not connected to the internet, with cookies turned off, I deleted all cookies, closed Firefox, and lo and behold, 150 cookies (yes, I counted them) had re-created themselves!
How can I get rid of them permanently? Please don't give me any pablum about them being harmless, they help to streamline the ads being shown to me, etc. etc. I don't care about that. This is MY computer and I do not want anyone installing anything on it! It irks me that deleting cookies deletes the useful cookies -- cookies that I would chose to keep -- but keeps all these other ones.
Please, if anyone knows, how can I permanently delete these cookies?

Get the Add-on NoScript for Firefox.
    http://noscript.net/
In addition, I always empty all cookies after a browsing session or at the end of the day. The worst is I have to log back in to some sites. You can't permanently eliminate the possibility of picking up a tracking cookie, but you can get rid of them if you pick one up. NoScript minimizes the chances of getting one, since you only allow the minimum scripts for a site to function. I suggest you start at the NS site and read about it. There's also a support forum which needs no registration. I won't have a lot of time today to explain much more.
Here what you do to completely eliminate Flash cookies. This works.
    +"Delete your ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia folder so you're starting from a clean, shared-object-free, slate.+
+Next, in your web browser visit http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_man ager07.html and under the Global Privacy Settings, click the button labeled "always deny" then "confirm" to prevent Flash from watching you through your webcam or listening to you over the computer's microphone. Technically speaking this isn't necessary, but it seems like a prudent move if you don't like the idea of web sites accessing these resources. Don't bother changing anything else in the Settings Manager because the other stuff pretty much involves what and how much can get saved on your computer, and we're going to answer those questions entirely different means.+
+Now navigate in the Finder back to your ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia folder and and recursively lock every file and folder inside it. This should include macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys/settings.sol, macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys, macromedia.com/support/flashplayer, macromedia.com/support, macromedia.com/#SharedObjects/<random letters and numbers>, macromedia.com/#SharedObjects, and finally the macromedia.com folder itself.+
    +That's it!+
+The cool thing about this is that Flash is convinced it can store this crap so everything works, but nothing is actually remembered by Flash. Or at least nothing is remembered between browser sessions. Flash apparently never tells sites attempting to store stuff that, even though storing is enabled, it doesn't actually work and nothing gets stored."+

  • Tracking Cookie

What is a tracking cookie as opposed to a normal one on the hard drive. I tried a trial MacScan and it found a few and I'm wondering if it would be wise to buy the program or just not worry about it?
    Thanks for any help.
    Rich

Cookie covers a wide range of files websites use in interacting with you. Some, like probably one from Apple Discussions right now, may keep you logged onto a site between page loads. Others may remember your location if you previously typed it into one of their pages, so a web site providing map directions always knows where your home is. Tracking cookies apparently keep track of web sites you have visited or other things that could potentially be of interest, primarily in marketing to you. "Hey, RichCo visits Apple, let's make sure next time he visits a computer sales website we show him all the new Macs." In this regard they are more invasive of your privacy.
I don't know if there is a list of common tracking cookies. If there is, you could go into your web browser's cookie management window and delete them. I recently weeded out a bunch of sites out of my cookies that I didn't recognize or didn't care for them to keep any information they might have about me. This can be somewhat laborious though, so if MacScan will do it for you it might be worth the money. Or, if you don't care about having to re-enter information in some web sites all the time you can usually use a privacy feature of browsers to delete all cookies.

  • Edge for web advertising

    Hi there,
I have tried to make the transition from Flash to Edge for web advertising and have run into a couple of problems.
Firstly the ad serving platforms require the assets to be delivered as one html file and one linked images folder. Edge outputs three js files as well as the html - does anyone know if I can add those script files to the html to consolidate into one file?
The second problem is that the ad serving platforms have issues with tracking Adobe Edge generated assets - has anyone else had this problem?
    Thank you,
    Isabel

I have been trying to find out the same but have had no luck. Our advertisers don't seem to know what to do about these exported edge files

  • Norton 360 does not pick up tracking cookies after updating to firefox 17.0

With firefox 17.0 Norton 360 does not pick up tracking cookies that were picked up with firefox 16.0.2. Uninstalled 17.0 and and reinstalled 16.0.2 - tracking cookies are picked up - updated to 17.0 and again no tracking cookies. I did not see anything in release note that would seem to reflect this situation. asked this question at 08:57 PST 11/29/2012 and the reply stated that Norton 360 should still be able to remove tracking cookies. WELL IT DOES NOT - WHAT HAS CHANGED FROM 16.0.2 TO 17.0 THAT WOULD CAUSE THIS. IS THIS A NEW BUG? The first reply did not answer my question however it was marked as "solved". I have rolled back to 16.0.2 and updated to 17.0 twice and the same thing has happened both times.

    Locking as a duplicate thread. <br />

  • AVG problem with sqlite tracking cookies

Every time I open Firefox I get an AVG warning about tracking cookies in Sqlite. I can't clean these cookies. AVG deny that there is a problem with AVG, so how can I fix this? I'm fed up of it and on the verge of going back to IE just so that I can open my browser without a stupid banner coming up.

I too have been exeriencing this problem for the last week now, and am getting extremely frustrated with having to delete the cookies EVERYTIME i open the Firefox browser. Sometimes AVG detects two of the sqlite tracking cookies, at the same time. When prompted to clean them, i have, only for AVG to give me a message that it has been unable to disperse of them. Then, i tried adding them to the exceptions list so that they could be ignored, again, they still kept popping up. I've opened up the location they are too be found in (AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\zof3e2jk.default\cookies.sqlite), and deleted it myself. This is however, all of the login details history you have kept on websites, as when i restarted Firefox, i had to retype my login details on every website i visit. I've never had problems with AVG until now, but from what i have read on the AVG forum, it is yet another bug with the latest 2011 version. My advice...stick with Firefox, and get another anti-virus program until avg can provide a more stable version.

  • Help on Expanding Web Advertisment

I need on AS 2, I have a web advertisement project and its
something new for me. The size of the ad is 728 X 80 pixels and it
should expand to 768 X 180 pixels when you mouse over on it. I
don't have any idea what to do, I made a file which is the base swf
ad file with the size of 728 X 80 and I don't know if I should
include the expanded size on the same file or just make it an
external file and call it with the base ad. The problem with having
it as an external file is that the site it will be placed on might
have security features which won't allow external files to be
    called.
My problem in having the 2 versions on the same file is that
when I play the swf file the expanded version doesn't show or the
stage just shows the 768 X 80 size so the expanded ad looks cut.
I hope someone can help me with my dilemma...

    What's an aspdnsf web site?

  • WHY DOES MY ANTI VIRUS TELL ME FIREFOX IS USEING TRACKING COOKIES ???

TRACKING COOKIES ? DOES FIREFOX USE THEM OR NOT ?? MY ANTI VIRUS SAYS YOU DO ! I AM USING AVG SBS EDITION

Hi - the message you get seems to be about cookies stored by websites. Could you post the exact text of the message here, so we can know for sure what it's saying?
Tracking cookies are stored by websites to track your visits to a website. They are not a threat to your computer, and you can remove cookies at any time by following the steps at [[Deleting cookies]].
It's safe to ignore antivirus warnings about tracking cookies. If you prefer, you can clear all Firefox cookies using the instructions above when this happens if you want to get rid of the cookies.
