Titanium PowerBook G4 (DVI) Logic Board Removal

I am in the process of taking apart my Titanium PB G4 (DVI) in order to remove the broken LCD display. I followed the instructions on ifixit.com:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/33.15.0.html
But I came across a snag with a part unaccounted for in the instructions. The bottom PCMCIA card cage (the one for AirPort card and the one that is attached to the logic board) is actually attached by a metal bracket to the top PCMCIA card cage. So, I am unable to remove the logic board and am stuck at the last part of this step:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/33.15.12.html
I do not see any clear ways of detaching the two PC card cages. If anyone has tips on how to proceed, I would really appreciate it.

Hi, Moonhawk. In your shoes, I would telephone iFixit for help. If their instructions are incomplete or unclear, I'm sure they will be glad to explain whatever you need explained, and they may be glad to know how their guide could be improved. I haven't personally performed the disassembly you're attempting on a DVI Tibook, and with my own Tibook still under its extended AppleCare until next January, I'm not inclined to take it apart to see what you're talking about. Good luck!

  • High Res Logic Board Removal

I am removing the logic board from my 1.67 Ghz Dual Layer PowerBook, so that I can replace the DC in board. I've noticed as I am attempting to remove it that there is quite a bit of resistance, and there appears to be a cable attached to the underside of the logic board that is not mentioned in the iFixIt guide. (not the DC in cable, not the battery cable) I have not been able to figure out how to remove it from the board. Can anyone offer any assistance?

  • Faster logic board/processor in my 'book?

I have 667Mhz Titanium (DVI) Powerbook G4. Is it ok to install a logic board with a 1 GHz processor? Will I see a substantial speed increase? Is there any other way to increase the speed on my Powerbook?
    Thanks,
    Lee.

Hi again, bamarags. I haven't shopped logic board prices in a couple of years and don't know what the going prices are now. If you're willing to buy a used board without any warranty, it will be cheap compared to anything offered with even a short warranty by a reputable vendor. The 1GHz board, being the fastest, is the most in demand and the most expensive.
Personally, I wouldn't spend more than $75 for any logic board without a warranty that I had good reason to expect would be honored. (A warranty from someone you can't find when you need to is no warranty at all, of course.) $75 is the largest amount I can afford to gamble once or twice a year — your threshold may be different.
For boards with warranties from reputable vendors, check these sites:

    http://www.dttservice.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.powerbookresq.com (parts and repair work)

    http://www.tekserve.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.welovemacs.com (parts and used equipment)
http://www.ifixit.com (parts and excellent, illustrated online take-apart instructions)
They won't be the cheapest sources. For those, see Ebay, and be very careful what you bid on there.
Bear in mind that there was also a 1GHz Aluminum Powerbook, and that logic board would be of no use at all to you.

  • Compatible Logic Board Replacement A1104

    I have inherited a dead AlBook 12", model A1104 (I believe it's a 1.5gHz) with a bad Logic Board.
I know that the Earlier 12" without the DVI port are not compatible.
Are there any OTHER incompatibility issues I need to know before searching for parts, or is ANY DVI logic board compatible?

    Wayne:
Thanks for posting back with an update. Funny thing, I checked PowerBook tech, but did not check the 1.33 GHz, which would have been the logical thing to check. Wow! That is good to know. There are quite a few 12" PB G4 1.5 Hz owners who have dysfunctional logic boards. This will be helpful for them to know.

  • Powerbook G4 titanium bad logic board

HELP, my second computer is a powerbook G4 15" and i have been told i have a bad logic board. is it worth replacing or should i put the $500 toward a new one? Also coould a bad logic board cause other problems in the future? what happens to make a bad logic board? what does a logic board do?
    thanks for all the info.

    Hi Tour Man,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Which model TiBook do you have? Especially if it's one of the earlier models (400-667VGA), I would certainly not spend $500 on it, as you would probably not be able to sell the entire machine for that price.
If it's a later model (667DVI-1GHz), consider what you use it for (if you have it fixed, how long is it going to serve your needs?), the capacity of the HD, how much RAM you have, whether there's a wireless card or DVD burner, the condition of the battery, whether USB2 and the many other "updates" a new machine would offer are important to you, etc.
It's not likely that a bad LB would cause other issues.
A LB (same as "motherboard" in PC land), is a circuit board on which most of the essential elements of a PB are soldered (CPU, GPU, RAM slots, etc), so when any one of these has issues, the repair is to replace the entire LB (specialized equipment is needed to work on the micro-circuitry, so it isn't something a repair shop can repair).

  • My Powerbook G4 died of logic board failure can you help or advise me ?

On Christmas eve I was working on my 2 year old 12" Powerbook G4, I got a notification that the battery was low so I thought lets save my work and drain the battery. It was a good idea at the time because I've heard its sometimes good practice to completely drain the battery and give it a fresh charge ? so the machine finally quit and before going to bed I plugged it into the mains to charge, immediately I noticed the power cord connection to my mac turned green and not the amber I expected. This powerbook has travelled the world with me over the past 2 years so its been a little buddy and I was alarmed to see this happen ? I waited 20 minutes guessing that there would be sufficient charge to wake the machine. After hitting the power button there was nothing !!! no click, chime or indication that he machine was in any way operational.
I tried cleaning the battery and touch points in the machine, I even tried my spare battery in the machine and everything I could to wake the machine. Nothing worked. I was pretty annoyed to be honest, its in perfect condition, no dents scrapes and it was always maintained and well ventilated etc.
On December 27th I flew to Irelands official Mac repair centre here in Galway as I needed it fixed ASAP and I was very concerned about loosing all my work and the physical machine itself. Five days later I called to see if there was a update, the representative explained to me that it was the logic board in my machine and that it was damaged and I would require a new logic board if the machine was to ever successfully boot again. The bill in total would be €670 inc. parts and labour and unfortunately Apple will only guarantee the new logic board for 3 months and after that I'm on my own. Sadly when I bought my machine (in Australia)I didn't take out the extended cover on the machine because it seemed quite expensive at the time and I knew I'd take good care to maintain and upgrade the machine as necessary.
The update I received from the official Apple repair centre was that there was no evidence of any water damage, dust or physical damage and there was no clear explanation as to why the part "just gave up"! The representative was very helpful and removed the hard drive for me, placed it in a external (USB)enclosure and sent it back to me so I did manage to save my work but still Imp very disappointed with Apple that I only got 2 years out of a machine that's become a daily tool to me.
I wanted to post and see what other people have done in this instance, luckily I'm fortunate enough to be able to purchase a new Macbook 2.0ghz to replace my machine but that's now costing me €1519 just because the Apple hardware was well quite frankly crap ! What I would like to know is - does this happen often, is there recourse to go back to Apple and is there a cheaper way to fix my poor Powerbook http://www.flickr.com/photos/bfitzsimons/215516415/ ?
Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give me

    Hi Brian.
In the UK we have some degree of consumer protection (Sale of Goods Act) for situations not too far from yours. Basically we, as consumers, have a right to expect goods that we purchase to be of a certain standard of quality/reliability. The SOGA provides up to six years of protection, unlike the standard one year warranty many manufacturers offer - which, to some degree, renders extended warranties unecessary.
However each case is different, and consumers will get different mileage depending on their individual circumstances but it is not uncommon for consumers to have successfully obtained repairs, replacements, or refunds using the SOGA - although they will have had to be prepared to argue their case.
Perhaps you might want to check out what kind of consumer protection the Republic of Ireland offers. At the very least, there is probably an EU equivalent of the SOGA which will cover the ROI as well.
NB: I've just re-read your post and realised that you bought the PowerBook in Australia - which probably disqualifies you from any EU or ROI consumer protection. That said, it may still be worth your while to find out what kind of consumer protection is available to you for future reference.

  • Powerbook G4 1.33 thermal paste logic board swap

I'm in way over my head here swapping over a logic board on a Powerbook G4 17" 1.33, with the help of a guide at ifixit.com, ifixit has a thermal paste guide but I'm still not entirely sure on how it applies to this particular machine.
I've removed the faulty logic board and the replacement one is on standby - here's a photo of it; http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/3964/logicboard.jpg As you can see on the lower part of the image, bottom left corner there is the motorola processor, then next to that approx 1.5 inches square there is a heat sink(?) and then next to that there are 4 squares with a grey diamond shape in the centre - not quite sure what this is.
The latter two have a sort of white gunky foam residue which I'm in the process of removing with a spudger. The inside of the case where these components make contact have corresponding raised shapes, I was going to clean these with Artic clean's material remover and thermal surface remover.
    Put simply then on the logic board there are two large squares and four small squares with a diamond in the middle my questions are;
    1. Should I use the Artic clean material remover and thermal surface purifier on all of these shapes.
    2. Should I spread very thinly the ArticSilver 5 over each of these components?
    Thanks in advance
    Jim

some replacment boards are shipped with "thermal pads" - foam is likely leftover from the removed thermal pad, which are kind of sticky thin plastic-like pads and are glued to the chips on the board.
maybe consider getting some pads at your local computer store, if not mistaken, pad is only used on the processor chip, paste is used on video controller chip for that logic board
hard to guess what pad thikness/type is supposed to be used on that board, so maybe the paste is a better option

  • Powerbook 17" G4 1.67ghz - dead logic board, or dead DC board?

    Hi there,
I have recently come in to the possession of a Powerbook G4 17" 1.67ghz, given to me by a friend in an attempt to fix it. The problem is simple: it won’t turn on! when plugged into the power cord, it makes the green illuminated rim on the flex turn off. I then have to turn the power supply off and on again to get it to work on other machines. I have been told it could be a DC board issue, or it could be logic board... If anyone could shed any light on the issue I would be grateful... Would prefer not to have to splash out on a new logic board!

    Powerbook G4 17" 1.67ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    iBook G3 500   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I went through this last year.
Power's up - but the light around the power plug flickers green all the time - even when charging.
Won't charge when it's in sleep or turned off.
Thought DC board - logically - but nope logic board.
Then found out bluetooth wasn't working either.
Well I thought 800USD is a lot to pay to fix those 2 things - so just living with it now.
So even if it appears to be DC board - it might not be....
hope this info somehow helps you out
    cheers

  • Powerbook G4 12" 1.33 logic board problem

My wireless antenna was broke so I disassembled my powerbook, installed the new antenna and when I turned it on this happens:
    -CD drive spins nonstop
    - Black Screen
    - HDD doesn't power on
I've checked everything I can think of, I was very careful when taking the system apart. Any ideas?

    Hello,
Sorry to read your logic board has gone. That's a painful fix.
I don't know if you could replace the logic board with a new 1.67Ghz. I know you can't with the HighRes model. There are some connections which would appear to be different. Personally your best to stick to the 1.33Ghz.
Due to the cost of these on auction sites like eBay, you would be better off simply buying a 1.67Ghz PowerBook and using that. Buy the time you have spent time stripping the screen off and rebuilding it (done it once, never again) You may just as well have brought another one.
    Best of luck

  • The cable between the logic board and the 3G board  was removed can I convert it to a Wifi only?

I have a Ipad 2 3g. someone detached the cable between the logic board and the 3G board can I convert it to a Wifi only?

The ipads that have 3g have an extra section attached to the logic board by a glued on wire. I bought this at a tag sale. Someone was apparently trying to repair their iPad and they did not know that when you removed that glued strip attaching the 3g antenna to the logic board you would never be able to re-atach it again later. So basicaly my 3g logic board is now in two pieces. the main logic board with wifi and the cdma 3g antenna. Now their is no differnce between the logic boards in either wifi only or wifi and 3g devices. I attempted to restore the device with the ios for wifi only, because there are 3 different ios versions depending on if you have wifi only wifi 3g with SIM card, or wifi 3g cdma.

  • Powerbook G4 17" won't boot...failed drive or logic board??? HELP!!!!

I am in need of some assistance. My Powerbook no longer works although it chimes when powered up. I have reformatted the hardrive and reinstalled a new operating but still there is no booting up.
**The question that I pose is: hardrive failure or logic board failure.**
I have tried to the Command-Option O+F, I have tried holding down the Option key (which starts the machine sporadically), I have tried the Shift key and also the DVD...nada squada on all of these.
    Please help.

Have you inserted the first OS X DVD and rebooted holding the C key down? This would boot from the DVD. Are you able to do that?
Have you run the Apple hardware test? With the OS X DVD that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print, insert it, and reboot holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, click on the arrow pointing to the right, and follow directions. Choose the extended test. Does that tell you anything?

  • Powerbook G3 Pismo-Bad Logic Board?

Hi. My powerbook G3 pismo suddenly refused to work last week. It chimes at startup, but then only gets the "grey screen." I took the hard drive out and put in in an external enclosure......it's fine. I took out an extra RAM chip I had added a couple of years ago....still no go. I have attempted to access the disk in Target Disk mode...no go. I've also tried to start up from a different startup disk by pressing the option key at startup...still no go! The Apple Hardware Test CD that came with my Pismo never gets past the "loading....." stage. I am writing in hopes that someone can tell me what the problem is. I'm assuming it's the Logic Board and am ready to purchase a replacement off Ebay, but would hate to buy one if someone thinks or knows for sure that it is not the Logic Board. I guess what I'm asking is this......What exatly happens when your Logic board fails? Are the symptoms similar to the ones I've described above? Thanks in advance and hope someone who's had this problem can help!

    Sax,
The HD ribbon cable would have been such an easy fix, but unfortunately I think the logic board is now the only fix as Cornelius has suggested.
Please keep in mind that the logic board contains multiple components and you can have a failure of one component without affecting the rest of the board. The FireWire bus is controlled by the PCI bus bridge whereas the internal HD is controlled by a separate I/O device controller. Even a partial failure of the I/O device controller is possible as evidenced by still having functionality of the optical drive. See this link: go to Architecture > Block Diagram and Buses > Block Diagram.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/MacintoshCPUs-G3/PowerBook/index.html
You can tear down the Pismo to replace the logic board or continue the inconvenient use of the FireWire HD. There is another alternative, however; buy an expansion bay HD enclosure and install your current HD in the enclosure. Since the optical drive interface still works, the media bay HD should have no problem. However, I would check with MCE first.

  • G5 2.3ghz power supply removal? Do I need to remove Logic board 1st?

Power supply partially expired on my 2.3GHz G5. Have found a donor. Manual says remove logic board before power supply. But you could remove power supply with board in situ on older G5s...........any ideas?

I've heard of some trying, possibly succeeding.
However, I wouldn't want a damaged logic board with my new PSU........

  • REMOVING THE DISPLAY FROM A TITANIUM POWERBOOK

The display on my 15" Titanium Powerbook no longer works. The laptop works fine if I connect it to an external monitor. Does anyone if you can remove the display from the unit totally and still use the powerbook like a desktop computer connected to a monitor?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I have a friend who did the same with an iBook, and managed to get it to work. Given the trickery of how the cables are hooked up, if you are at all queezy, have an authorized service technician help you out. You wouldn't want to expose the wires to moisture and dust that normally don't get exposed.

    djgornik,
if the Genius is correct and the logic board is bad, then replacing the logic board would be fairly expensive. What problems are you seeing with your MacBook Pro that caused you to visit the Genius in the first place? Whether it’s worth trying to fix it or not depends on your particular circumstances, such as your willingness to trade time for money in pursuing repair vs. replacement.
