Title 3D - beachball forever . . . (autosave?)

Messing around with an apparent strange type treatment in title 3d (boris) and clicked on the controls tab, got the spinning beachball. Still spinning as I post!
Real questions are these:
1) does autosave run as a separate background process or is it going to hung up as well as the UI?
2) any known way to interrupt what FCP is doing without 'force quit'
In other words, got carried away, hadn't saved in 30 minutes, roughly since last autosave and hoping to save 30 minutes of fine tuning the last cut. sigh.

I have yet to get the Boris Title 3D to work, either. I can get to the controls tab, but as soon as I click where it says "Click Here," it immediately crashes FCP.
Kind of a worthless freebie.

  • HT1535 What is up with iTunes 11.3 and podcasts? In view list nothing works-beachball forever. Nothing is usable.

iTunes 11.3 is broke with podcasts. View lists is unusable. Why the eternal beach-ball? I have over 100 subscriptions with over 1000 podcasts in storage. Is this feature being discontinued with no notice? I require the ability to make playlists for iPod classic for podcasts. This is my modern day radio. I have 40, 000 songs all legally owned and paid for in full. iMac is less than one year old. Is Apple abandoning podcasts? Will they let users know? Why is Apple making it difficult to create a playlists with podcasts?

    Back up all data.
    Quit iTunes if it’s running.
    Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash, if they exist:
              Application Support/SyncServices
              Caches/com.apple.iTunes
              Caches/QCCompositionRepository-com.apple.iTunes.cache
              Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService
              Saved Application State/com.apple.iTunes.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try iTunes again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
    Step 2
If you still have problems, quit iTunes again. Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
              iTunes
Note: you are not moving the iTunes application or the iTunes library. You’re moving a folder named “iTunes.”Test. If iTunes now works, delete the iTunes folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit iTunes again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place, and continue.
    Step 3
In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files with names that begin as follows:
              com.apple.iTunes
              com.apple.mobile.iTunes
Move them all to the Desktop.
Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.
Test again. This time iTunes should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. You may be able to put back some of the files you moved to the Desktop in this step. Relaunch and test after each one. Eventually you should find one or more that causes iTunes to malfunction. Delete those files and recreate whatever settings they contained.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit iTunes again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post again.
If you later decide that you don’t like the results of steps 2 and 3, you can undo them completely by quitting iTunes and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup.

  • So all of a sudden my titles are taking forever to render.

Just typing a few words is excruciatingly slow. I tried shutting down my Mac and restarting but it hasn't solved the issue

Exactly what happens when you try to start Firefox? Does it open but just not connect to websites? That could be caused by your security software's firewall, especially if you just updated Firefox. See [[Cannot connect after upgrading Firefox]].
If that's not the problem, try some [[Basic Troubleshooting]]. See if you can start in Firefox's [[Safe Mode]] by pressing the Shift key while you double-click the Firefox icon ... then select "Continue in Safe Mode" when the Firefox Safe Mode window appears. If Firefox starts in Safe Mode, follow the steps in [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] to see if you can find the source of the problem.
If Firefox still does not start, either post back with more information or try the suggestions here:

  • Infinite Beachball when Open/Place File Dialog is Called

(Apologies on the novel below. If it helps a soul out there from a descent into madness, well, at least one of us got out okay.)
I am having a heck of a morning that is bleeding over from last night (and it has nothing to do with Mardi Gras time in New Orleans). I have recently set up my laptop (a new MBP) with Yosemite and AICS 5.1 and 6 (haven't yet made the move to subscription CC). I use the laptop at my office, where we have a simple network (one router, a switch, and several NAS drives). All day yesterday I worked on the system and had no issues. I took the computer home (another simple network with router, switch, nas drive) and whenever I attempted to either Place a file into an existing document or Open a file from within Illustrator the file dialog window would open. However, even though the window would indicate the Desktop directory was being accessed, the list of files would not populate and, after a couple seconds, the cursor would beachball forever. Uncertain to its reason, I attempted several remedies (cleaning font cache, uninstalling a couple system preference panes, paring down font menu, removing sidebar items, deleting all preferences, making changes to Dropbox settings). The only thing that worked in getting the dialogs not to beachball was to install a temporary user account and load AI from there (not a practical solution, ultimately). Also, it is important to note, this Open/Place problem occurs in AICS5.1 as well as AICS6. Things that do work regarding file access: if I Save a file from within AI the file dialog comes up and no problem. If I double-click or otherwise open a file from the Finder or a search utility the document will open.
This morning I brought my computer to work and attempted the Place command. The window opened and paused, and then a curious thing happened. I heard my NAS awaken. After several seconds, the dialog window populated, and all was righted. I could Open and Place files with no issue. The three network shares that I have at the office all reconnected (I had disconnected from all of them before quitting the network last night).
At this point, my hypothesis is that AI was having some trouble with network shares and even though I had unmounted the shares AI was still remembering them (and having trouble letting go). To test this, I loaded AI with the shares mounted, quit AI, and then unmounted the shares. I then disconnected from the network and loaded AI. Attempting the Place command in a new document brought up the dialog window and directory file list (!). I then pressed [CMD] + D to get to the desktop files/shortcut folders and wham -- infinite beachball!
My desktop has a bunch of helpful aliases for navigating local and network shares. There are links to my Dropbox folder, my client art folder, a screenshot folder, and four links to network shares. I made these shortcuts by mounting the share, going up a level in the root directory, and option-commanding the share over to the desktop. I don't know if this is a good or holy way to do it, but it's the way I've been doing it on 10.6.8. In any case, I took all of the icons on the desktop and threw them in a temp holding folder. I then loaded AI, new document, Place, go to Desktop directory -- no beachball. Open the temp folder, infinite beachball, force quit. Create a subfolder within the temp folder. Put all the network share aliases in there. AI, New, Place, Desktop directory (ok), temp directory (ok), subfolder (beachball party), force quit.
Mind you, this is all with the network disconnected. When I get info any of the aliases the Finder beachballs!! After a few seconds, though, the Finder begrudgingly allows me to see the file information.
So, there's something screwy with the way those aliases are behaving. When they are 'looked at' by the AI file dialog (or the Finder) the system wants to reach out and touch them, say hello. The Finder, although flummoxed, eventually regains composure and shakes off the hang. AI, however, can't break free.
The temporary way forward, I suppose, is to remove those aliases from the Desktop and put them in a safe, out of the way place. I will probably create a few AppleScripts or Automator apps in their stead for mounting NAS shares, and assign to function keys. Hopefully someone out there with bigger lightbulbs over their head can shed some light on the problem and offer other suggestions for a more robust fix. In any case, it's probably a Yosemite problem, given the Finder's odd behavior.
    Cheers!

  • One possible reason for the spinning beachball with versions 10.0.2 trying to play/see anything

    Hi there.
I discovered today what is the reason for the strange problem I've been having with FCP X from 10.0.2+. The problem was that I just couldn't use it: I couldn't see any media in the canvas/preview pane, no matter if it was video, jpgs, psds, whatever. Trying to use or reproduce a project was just more of the same: a spinning beachball forever. At some point, from time to time, the black from the preview pane changes to a checkboard, but that was all.
    This happened in 10.0.3, 10.0.4 and 10.0.5.
I tried everything, removing the events, projects, and so on. The only thing that worked was to create a new user in my machine and use FCPX there. Everything seems to work fine there. I did that yesterday at 3am. Today I saw that the colors were off in that user, and I remembered that the calibration is not setup at the system level, but for each user, so went on to change the profile to use the one I did for my screen (I have my screens calibrated frequently). Voilá, now FCPX doesn't work anymore on the new user. The only change was the profile, so I went to System Preferences, selected the old (default) profile, and now FCPX works fine.
I don't know if the problem is my profile (I created it with ColorEyes DisplayPro, I don't have anything else right now to try to create a new one) or if the issue is with FCPX itself, as I have only had problems with FCPX related to the profile. In any case, the issue is now identified in my case, and even if I don't like to work in a non-calibrated screen, that will have to do for now.
I will try some other calibration software and see if the results are the same, but I thought of sharing my findings here in case someone is still having this issue.
Tomorrow that the 5770 arrives for my Mac Pro 1,1 I'll try to run it, also with the calibrated screen, and see what happens.
    HTH,
    Rodrigo

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean with "the profile is downstream from ColorSync"?
I'm willing to accept that there is something wrong with the way ColorEyes DisplayPro is making the profile, although if the OS loads it and uses it and doesn't complain at all - nor any other app I use - I don't see why FCP should have issues with it. But I'm willing to try some other app to create the profile for the screen and will do as soon as I can get my hands on some other.
Between lines, hopefully I'm wrong, but I read you are telling me that FCP doesn't support having a "typical" monitor calibration, usual in printing/photography/etc workflows, but only supports calibrated output through broadcast monitors, using third party hardware? And that in the Color screen settings I must not use any "user generated" screen profile?

  • Time Capsule no longer backs up since I've moved

    Hi all,
this is the second time that this has happened. My TimeCapsule was working fine, with no issues, until I boxed it up because I was moving to another apartment. I set it up on the other end, and re-established my wireless network (still with the same name) just fine, but the TimeCapsule will no longer perform backups because it says that it can't find the backup drive!
First it will say that :"there was a problem with the network username or password" and it tells me to go into the Preferences and to "select the network backup disc and re-enter the correct username and password." Which I do.
From here System Preferences will try to find the disc when I click "select disc," and one of two things will happen: it will find the disc, I enter the password, ask it to backup and it fails, OR I get the spinning beachball forever and System Preferences stops responding and I have to force quit.
I don't get it. Literally the ONLY thing that is different is the fact that I moved 16 blocks, and I changed the wi-fi password. Everything else is identical to how it was before! Why can't it perform a backup, and why does my SysPref freeze up half the time!?
    Any insight is appreciated.

Have you checked your Time machine settings in System Preferences?

  • How to remove or disable "Finder Preview" for a file type?

I have some large .hdr files which are large image files, and cause PathFinder (but I guess the issue is not really Finder or PathFinder but the preview app being called in Preview feature) to beachball forever. The problem is the calculation of image size and thumbnail display when either clicking on the .hdr image file (which brings in preview) or ctrl-clicking on the file which kicks off image size calculation for contextual menu in PathFinder (confirmed by PathFinder support). While I can get around ctrl-clicking until this issue is fixed, there is no walking around preview feature for thumbnail viewing unless I tell Preview not to consider .hdr files as image files (while still being able to view thumbnails of other image formats such as jpg and tif, which is what I will like to do).
Those .hdr files are not valid Photoshop radiance files. They are generated by Photomatix (www.hdrsoft.com). So, Preview seems to be having issues with it. Whenever I click on a large file (no problem with an empty file labeled with .hdr extension), PathFinder memory shoots from 50+MB to 500+MB and it beachballs forever until I kill it.
So, I will like to tell Preview not to consider .hdr files as image files. Pointers on how to do this will be appreciated. I am guessing that Preview.app is being called by Finder (same thing should apply to PathFinder) to calculate image sizes and render thumbnails. Please correct me if I am wrong about it.

You can turn off the preview column in Finder's Show View Options. I don't know if this will help with your problem. Also, I 'think' if you use a program to create a preview icon for the file (assuming it supports that format) the Finder will use that. It sounds like you want to keep icon preview selected, so I don't think there is a way to conditionally show the previews. You can also set Finder's PreviewDisclosureState to 0, which hides the preview icon--it controls the disclosure triangle in the preview column. Again, I don't know how this will affect what you want.

  • Imac doesn't recognize my external hard drive--all of a sudden

i've been using a LaCie external hard drive as my timemachine back up for several years without incident.  a few days ago i unplugged the lacie and when i plugged it back in, imac could no longer recognize it.  when i go to time machine and try to"select disc"  it tells me there is none to select.  when i go to system prefs disc utility i can see the lacie icon in the left column, but when i click on it i just get the spinning beachball forever, and have to force quit.  any thoughts?

Your HD might be corrupted, try going to spotlight, look up "Disk Utility" select your external and verify disk, there might be some errors on the disk, if so, then click repair disk, try that and get back to us.

  • As a DVD player

My DVD pkayer just crapped out. I am going to byuy a new player should I condiser a Mini to play that role? I have wireless in the house can I then hook up to my network also? Primary is DVD player secondary would be network. It will be hooked to 52 inch TV and an Onkyo sound system. Comments on Mac mini vs DVD player.

I use a mini as a DVD player currently. What I observe:
    - I have the mini set to 1080p output into a 1080p compatible TV. The DVD upscaling is truly stunning. Better than any dedicated DVD player I have owned. Many DVDs look as good as 720p cable channels I receive.
    - I miss having some functions from a dedicated DVD player, like a dedicated display on the front of the player with readout of chapter and time information.
    - It hasn't happened very often, but once or twice the mini had trouble reading a DVD and it beachballed forever to the point that I had to hit the power switch on the back of the mini to restart it.
    - It would be good if your Onkyo had a spare optical audio input because by far that is the best sound option out of the mini and the only way to get surround sound out of the mini.
Overall I am happy with this set up. My family slightly less so, but they tolerate it. The DVD player in the upcoming Leopard release has major updates over the player in Tiger so it will be interesting to see how that imporves the overall experience. You might want to wait if you can and ask your question again in a month.
Concerning the network part, were you thinking of being able to play a DVD on the mini and somehow network the DVD's output to other TVs in the house? If that's what you meant, then I don't think that can work. Otherwise, I don't understand your network question.

I launch safari, the window opens but remains blank and I get the beachball forever.
Tried safari in a new user account and it works fine.
Good to know it's just your user account and not a system wide issue.
From a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left then open the Library folder then the Safari folder then the Extensions folder. If you have any installed, move them to the Desktop. Try Safari.
If it's not Extensions, try troubleshooting third party Safari add ons. Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If it's not Extensions or third party add ons, try reinstalling Safari. Standalone installer here.

  • Iphoto book wont open

all was good and then today I was finishing book and it will no longer open. I can open iphoto just fine but when I click on my book I get spinning beachball forever.............I tried shutting computer off going to disk utilities etc..........still the same. Book is done cant get in to order it or open it

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Best way to remove applications and unneeded files

I have an Imac running slow. Duo Core processor. 4 mgs Ram. Disabled Java in Safari. Getting all my photos off the computer. Safari runs slow. Beachball forever. Have removed past Mac Keeper. Want to know the best way (Until I can add more RAM, if I can, to speed up my mac. I have had to purchase Adobe Cloud to replace Photoshop etc and want to remove all files on my computer not needed for Adobe and any other files slowing down my computer. Also, need Safari to be working. I wait for ever for pages to load and to access Gmail. Want to defragment my hard drive as well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

Suggest you post in the Safari forum for your beach ball problem if the suggestions mentioned in the Troubleshoot the spinning beach ball article are of no help.

  • Go to server hangs

I frequently connect to my client's server using the Go command in the finder. Server will come up, and I can access the first level of files - but when I proceed any deeper, I get the spinning beachball forever.
My question: how can I cancel/escape out of this process? Sometimes I have the luxury of waiting forever for it to resolve and eventually load - but when I don't, there doesn't seem to be any way of cancelling out of the process. I want to disconnect the server and abandon the attempt to connect/access it, but nothing seems to do that, short of a forced restart. Any ideas?

First thing I'd do is to get/try Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.

  • Lightroom 2 - Auto white balance - crash

I'm having intermittent problems while applying auto white balance on some CR2 files in Lightroom 2 running on OS X 10.5.4. When choosing Auto from the list of white balance options, LR waits for a second or two, doesn't update the history panel and the spinning beachball appears. CPU rises to about 100% and there's no other way than to force quit.
So far it happens with, say, one in 50 images (I've been working on approximately 100 images and with 2 this happened).
When I restart I can easily recreate the problem by going through the same routine.
The workaround is working on another image and then going back to the problematic one; then I can apply AWB without any problems.
I can save a (lengthy) hang reporter log file.

Thought I was doing pretty good with LR2, but unfortunately this problem has showed up on my Mac OS X 10.5.4 system. The stalls (i.e., beachball) are when developing CR2 images from a Canon 5D. I experience many occurrences of the problem when going through this folder of RAWs, perhaps 20-30% of the images. Today I thought I had found one that always fails, but turns out not to be the case, although it causes a failure over half the time it is accessed. Same symptoms as described in the above posts: Convert an image's white balance to auto, in either quick-develop or develop. Then when you access the image you get the spinning beachball forever, and have to force-quit. I've also stalled LR with this sequence: in QD, convert WB to auto, switch to develop module, undo the WB change in history by clicking the prior step... LR stalls. Basically I've seen all the same steps as described here, and more.
Also, just for fun I tried everyone's favorite troubleshooting step, i.e., trashing preferences. It made absolutely no difference. The first time I simply clicked on the troublesome image, LR got stuck.
Jao... interestingly, I never saw this problem in the beta in spite of developing many, many images in the beta. If it was known and not fixed, that's quite a concern.
