Title/Clip Duration Issues

Not sure if I'm just losing my mind or if others are seeing this as well.
Trying to create a Title Based Intro to a video using the Four Corner's template. After dropping in about 10-15 clips and modifying the text, I started going back and modifying the duration of each clip. I found that if I set the time to anything than a full second, a wide range of issues start happening. Consistently, I am unable to cleanly add new clips and modify other existing clips. When I try closing and reopening the project, none of my changes are saved.
Essentially the true solution is to delete and recreate a new project. I can't say for certain, but I believe this started happening after I applied the latest patch.
In any case, it has been a frustrating experience and I'm curious if anyone else has seen this and can set clips to half second increments.
Thanks.

Hi,
Two of those pic seem to be from Safari and you have not mentioned that or categorised this thread with that info.
The last pic seems to be OK.
From that my thought are that it is Safari only.
I tend to use Firefox myself and would not deem myself knowledgeable enough to suggest an answer on Safari.

  • Can't adjust clip duration of still photos in iMovie '11

Anyone having the same problem? I inserted a still photo in one of my projects in iMovie which has a a clip duration of 5s when added. I clicked the cogwheel icon then chose the inspector to adjust the duration. I've managed to changed it to 3s but after I clicked "Done", the clip duration is still under 5s.
I didn't encountered this problem before in iMovie '10 and I've searched over at Google and found out that many iMovie '11 users have the same dilemma.
Any workaround you can suggest? Thanks!

"problems setting duration for still photos and transitions in iMovie '11"
A number of people have experienced the same problem and written about it on discussions. Lots of difference solutions as well. If you search using the title quoted above, you can read the solution I found. It's more complicated than it should be. I've never had to fiddle as much with duration times for transitions and still photos. Nevertheless, the steps I have described work for me. You will also find the steps another reader offered that may work for you if all of your transitions are set for the same durations and all of the still photos are as well.

  • Kdenlive fail rendering if title clips or images are in the project

    Hi.
Thats what happen if I try to render a project with title clips or images inserted, whatever is the output that I choose. If I hide title clips and images, the project renders
I get a popup that says
Rendering of /home/pathtooutputfile aborted, resulting video will probably be corrupted
And what I see in the error log is a little different with the output I chose:
    If I choose mp4 I get

    Channel layout not specified
    [mp4 @ 0xb050ae40]
Encoder did not produce proper pts, making some up.

    If vob

No channel layout specified. The encoder will guess the layout, but it might be incorrect.
    If mov

I'm going crazy (a month ago everything worked fine).
    Any suggestions?
I search and found this http://www.kdenlive.org/forum/rendering … lip?page=2 but no way (and I don't know if it is my issue)
(my english is not so good... sorry)
    Thanksssssss

    Have you upgraded the system?
I had this same problem until yesterday, only kdenlive did not render at all, with or without title clip. Googling about it, I think it was some kind of conflict with mlt and opencv. Opening kdenlive as root did not work for me. I initially downgraded to the previous version of mlt (0.9.0.1 if I remember cforrectly); with that I could render, but only without title clips present. Solution came with last update of opencv (and re-upgrade of mlt).
Also, while I was looking up this problem, I read about a similar bug being related to the sound, and installed ladspa (just in case all the previous doesn't completely solve your problem).

  • Motion keyframe effect stretch to new clip duration

Sorry for the lame subject title, but I'm not sure I know how to be more descriptive, or search for previously posted info about this.
I have 98 still images on a timeline to which I want to apply a "zoom in" motion effect, and add a 2 sec dissolve transition between each. Is there a way to apply the "zoom in" effect without the dissolve in between, and then, when I add the dissolve, have the motion effect stretch out to affect the new clip duration? As everyone here will know, the transition adds time on to both ends of the clip with the previously applied motion keyframes staying put. Obviously, the effect I get is a dissolve happens, the clip then zooms up, stops, and then the next dissolve occurs.
Sorry to over-explain something so simple. Just looking for, hopefully, an overlooked shortcut.

But in your method Alex, the transitions are adding frames at the beginnings of clips which means the new clip will dissolve completely in before moving. I'm sure that's not what the OP is looking for.
The easiest method for this is actually a variation on Arsenal's first post.
Apply a transition between the first and second pics in your timeline.
Then keyframe your move on the first pic so you are seeing all the available frames (including the ones used in the transition). If it's a simple zoom move for instance, mark a keyframe at the first frame of the clip, and then on the last frame adjusting the scale to taste.
Apply transitions to all clips in the sequence. If using the same transition this can be done easily by lassoing all clips in the timeline and dragging them into the Canvas, choosing overwrite with transition to apply the default transition to every clip. In FCP 7, this has been made even easier.
Once you have transitions on all your clips, copy the properties of the first pic (CMD+C).
Select all the other clips in the sequence. Hit OPT+C to bring up the Paste Attributes dialog box. choose Basic Motion and make sure that Scale attribute times is selected. Hit OK.
The same move from the first pic will be stretched or shrunk to fit the length of each clip in the sequence and FCP takes the transitional frames into consideration as well.

  • How can I compensate for what a transition takes from a title clip?

I'm putting together, in iMovie 4, a slideshow, consisting entirely of clips from the Photo Pane. I imported my clips to the Viewer, then added cross-dissolve transitions, except where I wanted to create a title. Some clips have the Ken Burns Effect.
Here's the problem: after I add a title clip, then add transitions in front & back of it, the title clip's duration reduces. With the title highlighted, I go back into the Title Pane and increase its duration, but the transition bleeds off the increase, as it re-renders, every time. There's no problem updating a photo clip between two dissolves.
The cross-dissolves are about 1:20 in duration. I want my title clips to be about 2:10 or so. There's also the problem with title clips that their total duration is a combination of speed and pause. So adjusting their duration is complicated, once I get the total duration I want, but then have to try compensating for what the transition will take away.
Has anyone solved this problem for themselves, & if so, what do they suggest?
    HAPPY NEW YEAR!
    David

What if you put a photo down for a set duration, and
then put the same photo down back to back with the
first one, and use the second one to make the
transition with? Then of course, use a "transition"
photo for the next clip, and then back to back with
it, with a secondary clip of the same photo to last
the desired duration before you go on to the next
clip, with a third but same photo dedicated to make
the transition with? And so on...
Your suggestion has helped me in other ways by introducing me to the concept of adding clips to solve problems. I won't get into the details. Lennart, some time ago, suggested the same thing in another context, which worked, but I didn't transfer that knowledge, until now. Thanks.

  • Combining and Editing Sound in Titles Clip

Okay, now that I actually managed to capture the sound I wanted from my camera to my computer I am unable to find anything in the iMovie tutorial that explains how to get the sound and titles together AT ALL, much less exactly the way I want. How do you edit sound to coordinate it with picture? For instance:
    1. Because of the nature of the capture device, I had to capture sound at the beginning and end of the clip that I didn't want to ensure I got ALL the sound I DID want. As a result, I want my opening titles sound to BEGIN at 1:23:28 and END at 1:59:17. I think the clip is almost exactly this length. If it's longer, and there's black screen/no sound for a few seconds at the end, FINE, but I don't want extra sound at the end of the audio clip spilling over onto the picture (titles). So how do I make sure that JUST this part of the clip ends up on the titles without recapturing it trying to cut it closer, and
    2. How do I get the sound to play at the same time, in the same clip as the titles, at all? What is the exact process of putting picture and sound together?
Thanks for any replies. I'm off to work on the parts I do understand.

Although I can't find anything about combining picture and sound in the iMovie Tutorial, I did find something about shortening clips:
Keeping Only the Parts You Want
Edit clips in the timeline view
    1. Click the Timeline Viewer button in the iMovie window.
    2. Select a clip from the iMovie timeline.
    3. Move your pointer to near the end of the clip and notice the pointer change to two arrows. This means you can trim your clip.
    4. Drag your pointer toward the center of the clip and notice that the duration of your clip shortens as you move further to the left. You can see the new ending point in the clip viewer.
    5. Stop dragging when you find exactly the frame you want to end your clip. Notice the right edge of your clip now displays a straight edge rather than rounded corners indicating an edit has been made.
    6. If you change your mind and want to restore the clip to a longer duration, simply drag the edge to the right.
    7. Repeat this process with the other end of the clip.
    8. Save your iMovie project.
I don't see why in the world this wouldn't work just as well for a sound-only clip as a picture-and-sound clip. The only way I see of getting the out-of-sequence ones I want in the order I want is to either duplicate the clip and then shorten both clips, or delete the existing clip and recapture it as two clips--then shorten each to the length I want and somehow run them together in sequence. (Copying it into two clips would be faster and easier for me, but is it possible and does it make a difference?)
What I don't know is how to make it understand to put the three clips (these two shortened ones and the third I want to follow it) into ONE sound sequence, and then make it understand to run THAT sequence with the closing titles! How do I get each sound clip together with each other, then make it run together with each title clip I want? This has me at a loss. It would REALLY help if I could do this like TODAY! I will be DEEPLY GREATFUL to whoever can offer a CLUE!

  • Can I set clip durations in iMovie 10.0.7 for Yosemite?

In earlier versions of iMovie I was able to go to preferences and display the clip durations as described in this link below. I could also see the approximate position of the entire video while it is playing.
iMovie '11: Display the precise duration of video clips
I am forced to use the current version of iMovie because the older version no longer works for me. I cannot find a similar option in preferences or anywhere else. Has this wonderful feature been removed from this software. Right now if someone asks me to edit starting at a specific position I cannot do it. I have to play the entire video to find the portion of it that they want removed. I am working with fairly long videos and having this feature would really shorten the time for video editing.

Hello and thanks for using Apple Support Communities,
Unfortunately, although iMovie 10 added some great new features and brought a more intuitive user interface, some legacy features were discontinues. Chapter markers are an example. While you cannot add 'chapter' markers, you can still add traditional markers by using the Mark item in the menu bar and then clicking add marker. These will not add chapters, however, and will only allow you to quickly find a spot later in iMovie.
Sorry about that, but if you recently updated iMovie to version 10 from an older version, it is possible that the older version is still on your Mac. You can search for it using Spotlight, the search icon in the menu bar.

  • Kdenlive not rendering with title clip

After doing a system upgrade kdelive will no longer render my project, which rendered fine before the upgrade. After I click render, it either gets stuck in "waiting" or it gives an error saying that rendering crashed. If I turn off the title clip, rendering proceeds as normal. Looking around I saw some people with similar problems fixing it by running kdenlive as root, but in my case that didn't solve anything. Anyone have any ideas?
The kdenlive profile I'm using is HD 1080p 59.94fps and I'm trying to render an H.264 video (although trying other formats encounters the same problem).

  • Why is FCPX freezing repeatedly while moving title clips?

    Hello to all.
I am facing an exasperating situation. I am at the tag end of a project and I find that FCPX is freezing whenever I try to relocate a title. Have been forcrd to repeatedly force quit! Have trashed the preferences repeatedly, have restarted and even shut down the computer, have deleted thumbnail data, but, FCPX refuses to work.
Have read other posts in which one gentleman facing a similar problem was able to shift his titles with the inspector window closed. In my case, his method of surmounting the problem has not worked.
Right now I am minded to do this:
open FCPX once again, delete the existing titles, accurately place new titles and renter the text. Shall let you know the progress.
Until then, if there is some useful input in this totally frustrating matter, I would be too happy to lap it up!
    Thanks in advance.

    An update.
I have done this: copy the 'problematic' section of the project into a new project and have tried to edit the title clips in the new project...but this too was not of help.
I noticed that the FCPX would freeze only when a playback is attempted with the clip selected. But it would not whimper were I to move the clips, extend or shorten them.
Upon this realisation, making a 'crude' assessment based upon the audio waveforms, I did my 'rough' editing of the titles...and, the finished work appeared 'decent' enough. The flaws would be certainly noticed by seasoned viewers.
While pondering over this matter, I have this hunch that this erratic behavior of FCPX could have been triggered by my doing this: I had need of placing many titles in the project, and all of the text had to be given [almost] the same size fonts, tracking, face color, outline color and width. I had in an earlier thread asked whether there was any shortcut by which one could get all these parameters into the text without having need to edit each title individually. In that thread I learnt that one needed to do such a 'custom title' in Motion, which I do not have. In a moment of 'carelessness', acting against my better judgment, I did this 'easy' way of gettting things done: copy one title which had been editied and paste it at the required spot on the timeline; this done, I would delete the earlier text and replace it with the new one.
I guess that resorting to this 'easy shortcut' had forced me  to take the 'hard long route'!
Whether this 'logic' of mine regarding the origin of the problem is correct or not, I sincerely hope that Apple would give its fans the happiness of easily adding preset parameters such as font size, face color, outline color and width etc. to one's text from within FCPX itself.
I would also like to hear from other forum members regarding this seriuos matter. From other posts I understand that I am not unique in facing this problem but others too have faced it. For those to whom videomaking is a hobby [I am not one of them], having to face or pass through this kind of problem may not affect their careers adversely, but for those who are professionals [I am not one of them!], whose livelihoods and reputations are at stake, facing this problem would be the equivalent of smelling one's goose being cooked!
I would also like the reader viewing this post to view this short video which has given me so much trouble:

  • Display clip duration between markers in canvas window?

I can do this in Avid- but can not seem to figure it out in FCP.
There are two TC windows in each canvas window. Is there any way to set them to display the clip duration between markers?
In other words- I would like to see the duration between and IN point and the OUT point.

There's a command that will set the in and outs to markers; it's called "mark to markers" found in the Mark Menu. Set the playhead between any two markers and type control+a. Then the in to out duration will show up in the canvas.

  • Removing excess from a title clip

I added a scrolling title clip to my project and used Clip Adjustments to make it 30 seconds, which made the scroll roll at a comfortable pace for readability. The problem is that iMovie added an extra 12 seconds of blank title screen after the last word scrolls off screen. How do I remove the extra time without affecting the scroll speed? Simply dragging the end of the clip shortens it, but it also speeds it up to an unreadable speed. If cropping is the answer, how do I do it? The Help dialog didn't help me. I'm not very adept in the use of iMovie, so please try to help me in simple language!

I found the answer to my question and many more at http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/imovie_09stone.html#markers

  • Can't fully change clip duration...

    Hello all
My students and I are doing a claymation type project and I am having some difficulty changing the clip durations once I've imported the photos into iMovie. I can get them in and changed down to 0:00:14 but not any shorter. I should be able to set them as fast as 0:00:03... If I change the clips individually, I can set them to 0:00:03, but if I try to change more than one at a time, the lowest is 0:00:14. With 500 odd photos for each group, changing the length one clip at a time isn't really a feasible option. Any suggestions?

Yes, the pics have to be in the Timeline before they can be adjusted.
Great that it's now working for you. As a retired teacher myself, I know what it feels like when things don't work as they should, and you have a disgruntled class breathing down your neck! Good luck with the project - sounds interesting.
Here's an explanation of PAL and NTSC:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL
They are Television Broadcasting formats - your part of the world uses NTSC, many other parts use PAL, and some others eg France uses SECAM. They use differing frame rates, so are largely incompatible with each other.

  • How to re-render a modified title clip?

I made a title clip in Motion, rendered and loaded in FCPX. Now I have modified it in Motion and rendered again (IN MOTION) with same name, so it replaced the old file.
Now, I see that FCPX reads the old clip yet (probably it reads the old rendered file).
It seems it cannot realize that the clip has changed in its internal contents...
How can I tell FCPX to re-render the modified clip?

Make a change. Push the opacity down. Push it up. Not undo. If you modify a file in Motion, export with a new name and thn relink to the you new file.

  • FCE crashes when creating Title clip

Every time I try to create a title clip, the program crashes. I can select the text generator I want, but when I click the Control tab to enter the text, the spinning beach ball shows up and the program crashes. It does this no matter which text generator I choose.
I've tried restarting my computer, repairing permissions, and trashing preferences as described in one similar case (com.apple.FinalCutExpress.plist, Final Cut Express Obj Cache, Final Cut Express Prof Cache.fcpch); but it made no difference.
FYI: I just purchase FCE and installed it. Software Update had trouble updating it to 4.0.1, and I had to reinstall the program to get the update to run correctly. I don't know if that's relevant to my problem.
Without the ability to create title clips, I will be unable to use Final Cut Express; so this is not a feature I can work around.

I worked with an Apple Genius to isolate font problems. We discovered it worked fine when no user fonts were enabled, so it seemed I just needed to figure out which user-installed font was corrupt. Thus I started with all my user fonts disabled and began enabling a few at a time and testing to see when the problem resurfaced. After painstakingly testing all my fonts, I have been unable to replicate the problem. You read that right: I've re-enabled ALL my user fonts, and the problem is gone.
I don't know if the crashing will resurface, as it makes no sense that the process of shutting fonts off and turning them back on should fix anything. But for now, that appears to have done the trick.

  • Photo Clip Duration

I am trying to edit the clip duration for a still photo down to .5 seconds, however it won't let me do this. Is there a minimum clip duration? I want to add a bunch of photos with a short duration so you only see a short flash of the image.

In iMovie/Preferences, make sure to check "Display Time as HH:MM:SS:Frames". This will allow you to edit to the frame level. .5 seconds in NTSC would be about 15 frames. Set the duration of the photo to 15.
You can go as low as one frame, but there is a trick involved.
