Probably a dumb question, but here goes anyway ...
If two websites with very similar domain names have identical names in their <title> tags, would that cause a website recognition problem for one or more of the search engines?

No, different domains are different domains so there won't be "confusion". Now if the sites have similar domains, and very similar content, and are relevant to the same industry or topic, there's a chance they may get ranked close enough together to appear on the same results page, then there is a chance of user confusion... But that's a pretty iffy scenario.

Cannot create title tag, meta tags for iWeb site, per Google requirements.

I created simple website in iWeb to meet art show deadline

but when I tried to submit to search engines (via GoDaddy "Traffic Blazer" product), several issues or errors noted...no title tag, meta tags, keywords, too little text, etc. Was told by Apple, there is no fix at this time...no way to access to actual HTML code, to add title tag or meta tags, etc...since iWeb is merely a consumer, not professional enterprise, product. Researching further, I even tried to submit to Google directly, not via GoDaddy "Traffic Blazer", but could not "verify" my url site (because meta tag missing and/or could not upload entire html file, as required. I'd produced client websites in past on Adobe GoLive and was learning Dreamweaver, when someone alerted me to simplicity of iWeb. It is clean and simple, but wish I'd anticipated these other issues. Is there a solution to this with iWeb or should I finish learning Dreamweaver and start over? Thanks for any advice you can share.

I could not open home.html file with "text edit", but when using Taco HTML Edit, it would open...so I dusted off (novice) HTML skills and entered the appropriate title tag and meta tag, per Google's requirements. Then, went to my GoDaddy hosting control center and (I think) I uploaded new file with new tags. Seems to be major lag time with any changes, so not sure my site is now successfully "verified", on Google. Hope I did not mess anything up, in the process. There seems to be various lag times before any changes take effect (right??).
So now...I'm very glad to find out about iMap and will buy it and watch the tutorial video, as instructed...since I am unsure if last 'fix'...fixed the problem, etc...and always eager to learn more. This is my first Apple discussion post, and certainly impressed/grateful for expert help. THX again.

I'm working on my title tags for Destination West at http://xibuhaohua.com and as you can see, it is in Chinese here as 西部豪华 but it's English here at Destination West. So, I'd like to know if I can edit each separately because I think they should be in different languages.

You can set the title for each page in the Page Properties dialog.
Note that on a master page, you can set a page title prefix or suffix if you'd like all your pages using that master to share a title prefix or suffix.

Hello,
I have published my site trough iweb on my mobile me account. When I look up my site on google it shows "about". How can I change my sites name?

Is the first page of your site named About? If so change the page title to something else in iWeb and republish.
Or, use the free iWeb SEO Tool to give that page a new title that you would want to show up in the google search.

It can access the site on your iDisk, add the title tag to the About page and save it. SEO remember the tags it has assigned to each page of your site so it can be easily reapplied with just one click of the button after any edits and republications are made.

I have a very big website and I would like to find a way to

Is there any way to have a view which shows the file names

Hi yea,
back up your site.
open your site in dw, open any page in question and do a ctrl
f .
you will have a find a replace window pop up
the "find in menu" select "Entire current local site"
paste <title>Untitled Document</title> inside the
FIND area or what ever you
have there that needs to be changed throught out your site.
it the replace window paste <title>guinness or what
ever</title>
then by clicking replace all, all reference to
<title>Untitled
Document</title> in your current local site will be
changed to
<title>guinness or what ever</title>
go to the dw help if u want more info on this , make sure you
back up your
site first in case you mess things up.

Title tags gone when forwarding

My site is published on MobileMe, so I forward my domains to the web.me.com URL. Works fine, no problems. Well, one issue is persistent when visiting the site from a forwarded domain: the title tags are gone. They are drawn in the browser windows title bar when I visit the web.me.com URL. The title tags are correctly written in the "page name".html file, but simply don't show up when I access the site from one of my domains.
Can this be corrected? And, if so, how?

Let me guess : URL forwarding with cloaking/masquerading.
Meaning, you hide the page within a <frameset>
Test 1 : Right-Click your page and choose "Open frame in new window/tab" Yes/No?
Test 2 : You'll still see your domainname. Not the web.me.com page. Yes/No?
If either is Yes, go to where you manage your domainname and change it.

Duplicate Title Tags - but one product in multiple categories?

Hi there and Happy Friday!
I'm an SEO newbie so please forgive my ignorance on all this.. but I'm confused
I installed Google Webmaster Tools and it says I have lots of "Duplicate title tags"
"Your title provides users and search engines with useful information about your site. Text contained in title tags can appear in search results pages, and relevant, descriptive text is more likely to be clicked on. We recommend reviewing the list and updating the title tags wherever possible."
But - these Duplicates are coming from products being in multiple categories.
E.g Vanilla Diffuser oil is in This catalogue and This one and This one too - so our customers can find it easily on our website.
As we do fragrances we have the catalogue for the product (Diffuser oils - where all the oils show)
+ the catalogue for the fragrance name (Vanilla and Coconut - where all products in Vanilla Coconut fragrance show)
+ a catalogue that shows all products so customers (and us) can easily see everything on one page to order.
Am I supposed to ONLY put products in ONE category then do something different to make them show on different pages? Sorry for my ignorance on SEO - I'm finding it such a mindfield...
Also if anyone has the name of a fabulous BC SEO expert they'd recommend that has helped their site i'd love to know.

Webmaster Tools only shows you areas that may be a concern and just because it shows something it doesn't mean your ranking etc will be affected. However, if you are really concerned you should look at canonicals. You can read more about it here http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394. Basically you are telling the search engines whichj is the main version of that product so simply show the product url in the main catalogue.

Help with Find / Replace button title tag contents (text)

I designed my site with Sitegrinder (Medialab) –
Currently all the title tags generated for buttons are the same as
the actual html page name.
The problem with this is that the tooltip which appears in
browsers when you hover over the button with the mouse gives you
the page name. Instead I want to use these tooltips to give the
user an indication of what the function of the button is.
An example: A zoom button above an image: Currenty the
tootlip says “zoom imagename pagename” – Instead
it should say “click here to zoom”.
I need help to get the Dreamweaver Find and Replace tool to
batch replace these tags for me for about a 100 pages.
Here is an example of the code:

You have ~ 100 pages, each of which has images with title
attributes (not
tags), all of which BEGIN with the letters "zoom"?
What do you want to replace that text with? Wouldn't it be
different for
each button? Or do you mean that you would do multiple
sitewide searches,
one for each button? This illustrates how wrong it is to not
use DW
Templates or server-side includes to simplify the management
of your
navigation elements....
Did you ask Medialabs if it would be possible to specify this
before
generating the HTML?
How did you like working with SiteGrinder? It looks like a
nice product to
me, although I'm not fond of the final results code-wise....

How to set the title and tab name of page in EXCEL format

I have generated a HTML page in a popup. I want to show the page in Excel format in the popup.
I did this by executing the command
         owa_util.mime_header('application/vnd.ms-excel',true);before the report.
This is working correct only now you see the complete URL in the popup title and
the "f?p=.." part in the excel sheet name.
How can you change the title and the sheet name.
I have already tried the following:
         owa_util.mime_header('application/vnd.ms-excel',false);
         htp.p('Content-Disposition: inline; name=overzicht.xls');
         htp.p('Content-Description: overzicht.xls');
         owa_util.http_header_close;but this does not change anything.
Does somebody know a solution.

I'm posting again because the issue is not resolved yet. I thought it was fixed but it isn’t.
I followed other posts you had answered about blog meta tags, but still can’t get it fixed.
For the BC Blog - unable to show blog post description "{tag_blogpostmetadescription}" for SEO.
blog post <title> tag works fine but not the blog post description.
As previous forum answers indicated:
Went to:
- Site Manager->Module Templates->Blogs->Blog Post Details layout and put the above code.
- made sure in blog post SEO the title and description fields are filled out.
- removed from my blog-template any call for the title and description.
must be missing something.

Populating Title Tag - Content or metadata?

I've noticed that many sites use the same information for the title tag (<title>) as well as the title of the content displayed. I've created a regional definition with two elements: Title and Content. I've then tried to embed the content of the Title element between the <title> tags like so:
<title>MacEwan | </title>
but the element doesn't display. Any suggestions how to make this work?
Is this the best practice? Should I be looking at creating a separate metadata field instead?

Thanks Bex for the solution for the NodeID. Here's the solution for secondary pages that was sent to us: assuming we have a placeholder called Content with an element called Title, we would use:


and place this between the <title> tags - perfect! Now the trick is to display the text without the <p> tags which even the plain text element definition includes. If you create a customized element definition and link it to a text field form, you can get the text without the html tags - and it all works! :-)
You can also create an element called MetaDescription that will allow users to enter this meta data for search engines.

OAF Tutorial Extension - To add Site Name in Purchase Order Summary Page

I have gone through all steps for adding Supplier Site Name for Purchase Order Summary Page. It works but seems it shows SiteID instead of Site Name.
The main instructions says
Step 2.3 Create Your New View Object (VO)
Make a copy the PoSummaryVO query statement before you begin creating your new VO. Expand the oracle.apps.fnd.framework.toolbox.tutorial.server package in the Navigator pane and edit PoSummaryVO. In the View Object Editor, select Query to display the query statement for this VO. Make a copy of the query statement.
Create a new VO, named <YourName>PoSummaryVO, that extends oracle.apps.fnd.framework.toolbox.tutorial.server.PoSummaryVO.
Create the VO in the <yourname>.oracle.apps.fnd.framework.toolbox.tutorial.server package.
Add the oracle.apps.fnd.framework.toolbox.schema.server.SupplierSiteEO entity object. Leave the Read Only and Reference checkboxes checked. We are going to use this entity object only for read-only purposes.
Add the SupplierSiteId and SiteName attributes from the SupplierSiteEO entity object.
Paste the query statement that you copied from PoSummaryVO into the query statement field for <YourName>PoSummaryVO. Now append the following SQL phrases to the copy of the PoSummaryVO query statement to compose the query statement for the <YourName>PoSummaryVO.

Note: We set the View Instance to PoSummaryVO1 and not <YourName>PoSummaryVO1. The BC4J substitution will take care of properly creating an instance of <YourName>PoSummaryVO1 at runtime in place of the PoSummaryVO1.
It does not show site name, it shows site id after havig done personalization.
Any idea why it would show site id and not site name.

What I found is there are 2 variables SiteName and SiteName1, if you use SiteName1 then it shows proper value as a site description. I replaced SiteName with SiteName1 and it works. This might help to all who are like me and trying Tutorial example.
I am not sure how many may have tried OAF - Tutorial examples. They are really complicated and not easy and in most cases they are not coming out in first try but if you really try then it will give lot of understanding.

Certificate does not contain the correct site name

See, we now know that you used keytool to generate you certificate. You need a new certificate. This time, when keytool asks you for a first and last name, type 127.0.0.1.

Change Site Name, how to announce??

Hi,
currently i've change my Site's Name let say from www.xxxx.com/xxx to www.xxx.com/yyy
instead of announce this changing through email, any other ways to announced it?
when site name is changed, the bookmark will not reganize the URL then...and it'll shown the error page "We 're Sorry, but we can't......" can i make this error as an announcement for the new URL?posible?

Add the following code to an HTML snipped in the first page of your old site:

This redirects the visitor immediately.
Or you can do a different redirect using this code added post publication to the entry page of your old site:
<script type="text/javascript" src="Redirect_files/Redirect.js"></script>
<meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="10;url=URL TO YOUR NEW SITE">.
Add the above code just before the </head> tag in that page. You can edit the page in the old site so that it just has text telling them that they are being redirected and to remember to bookmark the new site. The "10; number is the number of seconds to wait before redirecton takes place. You can change it to a shorter time, long enough for the visitor to be able to read the message. You can also put a text hyperlink to the new site for those who are too impatient to wait for the redirection.
This demo page uses the latter method and has the code to use.
