Titles in FCP

Having some issues with text not looking very good after exporting a QT movie from FCP. It's a DV timeline.

Hi -
If you are positioning type with the Motion tab, then you want the text to rest on an even scan line.
You can see this in the Motion Tab > Center > Y position.
The consequences of not having the text resting on an even scan line is acerbated by smaller size/thinner text, and by using a low quality codec like DV.
It will also be more obvious if you are monitoring your canvas on a real NTSC monitor, where you will see the text "snap" into sharpness when positioned on an even scan line.
Hope this helps.

Select the title clip in the Timeline, Then Transform. Either click and drag or use the Inspector Position parameters to adjust.

I know what your'e going through, Gary.   OSX 10.6.7 is an absolute disaster.   Since I upgraded, I've had problems in FCP, Logic, Garageband, even issue dealing with peripheral hardware like external monitors.
Before 10.6.7 my system was running fine.
I've brought this up with Apple repeatedly.   They smile and shrug.   They've been helpful resolving the issues, but none of them has been easy to solve.  I have spent days, dealing back and forth with tech support, sending logs, etc., before solutions have been found.
I wish I could give you an answer to your question.   My only guess is that Apple has totally dropped the ball on this one.   In the future they should provide a disclaimer when they offer an upgrade.  Something like:   "Caution: all of your software may not function after this upgrade. But go ahead, you'll feel cool that your OS is the latest thing."
As someone who has been with Apple for close to 25 years, I'm disturbed by what appears to be an increasing sloppiness in their work.   This is especially disturbing when you depend upon their system to make your living.
    Good luck.

  • GeeThree titles with FCP?

Can I apply any of the GEE Three titles- in particular, the countdown title to FCP project? Thanks!

I didn't see the title you're referring to, but the good folk at Gee three could tell ya.. might contact them. Most of what they sell software/wise are plugins for iMovie. I suppose you could use them there in any event, then export the results to FCP.

  • Making titles in FCP

WHat is the deal with the title tool in FCP ? Is it just me or does it always look horrible? Any suggestions?

By 1:1 I am refering to uncompressed footage. For example, the Animation codec. DV images are compressed to 1/5 of footage. When you import from AE to a DV timeline you are compressing your footage to 20% of its original data. That's why DV text looks like CR@! If you could import or create text that is uncompressed it looks great. Of course, you can't output to DV tape but for DVD, film or DV50 etc...< </div>
You either adapt and come into the fold or you expend terrible energies fighting FCP. Your choice. But you can trust us, FCP will never work like your Avid, whatever that was.
Uncompressed titles rendered in any QT codec are easily imported from any other application. They will be rendered to the format settings of your sequence timeline. Period. If you're using DV or encoding to MPEG2, your beautiful After Effects work is going to be turned to various kinds of mush. You compensate for the inevitable mush with experience and understanding of the differences between progressive and interlaced targeted outputs. Titles in FCP are just as fabulous as any other system once we learned how to use the tools.
We've been dealing with "my titles look terrible" posts like yours for several years around here. The titling tools in FCP can produce superb results and these questions always point to two answers: a) Operator error or, b) Failure to view rendered titles on an appropriate output device instead of the computer monitor.
Anyways, is there anyone who knows how to import text and CGI into FCP at 1:1? Perhaps a capture card that does it? Kona? I am new to FCP and am interested in creating a system equal to Avid Xpress Pro with Mojo. < </div>
Why would you think you can capture files at a better resolution than importing them? Is that how your Avid (whatever that is) used to work?
You can get upset about sarcasm if you want to but we're a great bunch of folks. You don't need to take anything I or anyone else says personally unless you feel compelled to do so and we can't help you with that. We've tried to answer your questions and we invite you to search the forum archives for similar threads. There are hundreds of similar threads about titles and there are hundreds more from disaffected Avid and Media 100 users who have the same troubles you are having adapting to the new platform.

  • Sharing text titles between FCP projects

    Hi,
I am working on a series of 6 interviews which may total slightly over 1 hour altogether.
I was thinking it would be easier to manage them as 6 FCP (4.5) project files and then when I burn them to DVD, I could perhaps export 6 QT movies to iDVD (is this possible?).
But my first question is, that I have some complex title (text) screens already done for the first movie project. Is there an easy way to share these between the first project and the other 5?
Or maybe its just best to keep it all as 1 big project? That would certainly make cutting and pasting the titles a little easier.
    kind regards,
    'mark

Yes, it is quite easy. To create a new sequence, go to File_New->Sequence or just hit [ Command n ]. You can name each sequence any way you like for your own organizational purposes.
I often edit long format programs this way, with each segment in its own sequence. When I'm finished editing, I copy and paste the individual sequences into a final (master) sequence to print to tape or export for DVD-Video.

  • Help creating robust titles in FCP

    Greetings,
I am a recient FCP convert. For the first time I tried to create some titles, but had issue with the 'Title Generator' that is native. I am used to a screen style title generator, that lets you create multiple texts in one graphic, vary the font and font size within a graphic, and add shadows and strokes, etc.
Premiere's titler, and Avid's stock titler (or Marquis for that matter) are prime examples, very robust.
I was just wondering if I wanted to title like that in FCP what do I need? Am I missing something, because the 'Title Generator' doesn't seem like it would be enough for the kinds of people using FCP.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much!
    David

Thanks so much for the response!
Ok, here's my next question, when I build titles, I need to see the image behind the text so I know how to block my graphics, create a build, etc. Also I like to generate elements to go with my text, like boxes, bubbles, and lines, etc. Premeire, and Avid will both show the background frame, and allow me to generate all kinds of transparent non-text options right in the frame. Sure, I could use Photoshop or AE, but frankly that's not easy, conveninet, or allows me to easily block my text effectively.
Is there a way for me to pipe the current background frame into LiveType, or Motion, becuase then I could build my graphics without problem.
Thanks again! I really appreciate the help!

  • Titles in FCP 4.0

I am trying to add scrolling text to my FCP 4.0 project. I click the "control" tab on the viewer window, but the window is covered with a black slug-like pannel that only allows a bit of the window to show. I have read about titles in a stack of books (4), followed the instructions in all of them, still the great blackness. I have also tried the other titles options--text, lower third, etc. Still draped in black.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Not sure about your black slug issue...can you post a screen shot of it, so we can see it?
I would note that if you're running FCP4 on OS10.4.9, you might consider some revisions there.
First, IIRC, you can do an update to FCP4.5 from 4. I understand that 4.5 works better than 4. I'm unable to find the update on Apple site, so you might want to
Call the Mac experts at 1-800-MY-APPLE
Regardless of 4 or 4.5, I believe they both work better on OS 10.3.9.
If you get to 4.5 and are running it on 10.4.9, you will want to follow the instructions in this thread. Props to Silal for the solution...

Or, consider upgrading your Final Cut software.
In the meantime, try to get us a screen shot to see your issue, or provide more details regarding: any recent changes to your system, any troubleshooting steps you've tried....repaired permissions? trashed preferences? rebooted?..etc.
I've a feeling it's simply something you need to adjust in your interface.

  • Motion titles in FCP

i am creating titles in motion for a sequence in FCP. When i transfer the title from motion to FCP they look good but when i cut them into my sequence the quality of the titles is bad. I am working in with a DVC Pro sequence. is this normal or am i screwing something up????
    i appreciate the help.

    1) Are your sequence settings the same?
    2) Have you gone into the Render Control tab of FCP's User Preferences and checked the Quality drop-down box?

  • Motion TITLES into FCP / Why blocking out the video track?

Perhaps it's because of a Studio upgrade? - But when I layer TITLES over a video track it blots it out with a black background.
In other words, rather than see white titles over video, I only see white titles on black. I can reduce the opacity of the titles, and see picture. But that reduces the opacity of the video too....This is a new glitch...Any ideas why it's happening? - Thanks!

You're outputting titles made in Motion over video in FCP ... correct? If so, are you inadvertently adding a black background in Motion?

  • Hebrew titles in FCP

How do I crate and titles in Hebrew in FCP? I saw the font list has an option (Ariel Hebrew and others) but I can't figure out how to crate it.
    Thanks

You probably need a Hebrew keyboard to do this properly.
Another way, but only practical if you have small amount of text:
Open System Preferences and go to International > Input Menu.
Click the checkbox for Character Palette. You will notice that a flag has appeared in your menu bar. Click and choose Character Palette. Set the View button at top left to All Characters.
In the left column, click the triangle next to Middle Eastern Scripts and then click Hebrew.
When FCP's title tool text input pane (or any application that accepts text input) is active, double clicking the glyphs in Character Palette will insert them.

  • Titles in FCP aren't crisp, what are the best alternatives?

I know there is Live Type, but it's not my favorite. Does anyone have a favorite for doing text and titles?

    Shane I used to agree with that 100% (in fact I'm sure I probably whined on about it in some of my earliest posts here and you probably helped me out!) Now I only agree about 40%. (;
It's a bit of a pain, but if you're careful about font selection (nothing to narrow or fancy) and placement (move in small increments up or down) and size (don't blow them up in FCP) you gan get decent titles from 3D and even LT.
Is it perfect? No. But with a little care they can often be made to look better than what you might first see when you drop em in.
Oh, and of course, judge them after a "full" render and on a broadcast monitor.

  • Boris Title 3D & FCP 5.1.2

I recently upgraded to 5.1.2 and when I open projects done in 4.5, any Title 3D elements has screwed-up leading. I either have to fudge the baseline to bring it in line or create one from scratch. This seems like a waste.
Why is this happening and can I fix it to avoid messing with dozens of Tiles? Thanks.
    --Alex

This is driving me crazy. Most of the text formatting controls don't work on these older elements. Surely I'm not the only one using Title 3D in their projects. Am I the only one seeing this strange behavior?

  • Creating transparent backgrounds in Keynote for export as titles in FCP

I am creating titles in Keynote and exporting them into Final Cut. I was wondering if anyone knows how to make transparent backgrounds so I can overlay the titles on videos. I have tried "include transparency" but have been unsuccessful. I haven't found any help files to address this situation.
    Many thanks

    1. make sure your slide background is set to NONE, no color, no image
    no nothing
    2. Check the Include Transparency check box when you choose the
    QuickTime export
    3. Choose Custom from the formats pop-up
    4. Click the Settings button
    5. Choose Animation or PNG from the pop-up (it probably says Sorenson)
    6. Choose Millions of Colors+ from the depth pop-up
Make any other quality or frame settings, and export it. You SHOULD get
a movie that has a transparent background.

  • How do you create clear titles in FCP?

We have these custom titles we created in illustrator and imported as the head titles in a Video but when its rendered and played back the resolution is terrible. Has anyone encountered this and is there a solution?

One of the main reasons for poor titles is using too fine a font. Bold ones always look better.
Standard definition video is only around 720 pixels wide, so if you have created your titles in an app using a canvas of 1000 pixels or more wide, there is a good chance that your letters will end up too fine and will either look blurred or shimmer badly.
Exactly what size are your original titles and how were they created etc.?
Could you provide a screenshot of the originals?
