Tivo disc to iMovie???

A friend of mine recorded a show from TIVO onto a DVD. I would like to be able to edit part of that show in imovie. Does anyone know how I can convert the TIVO file into something compatible for editing in imovie?
Thanks!

Look at the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video (or S-Video) go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (not sure about iMovie 08).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).

I think iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is the best combination.
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

    You can do this using a free app called MPEG Streamclip, along with a $20 quicktime component from Apple.

    Native Apple Mac can't do it. You need a program to back-code to streamingDV.
    I use: Roxio Toast™ to do this

  • Using DVD-R mini discs with iMovie

    Good Day,
    I am totally new to iMovie. I have a Sony dvd-r mini disc (4*, 1.4gb) with video footage and want to transfer it onto my Powerbook and into iMove for manipulation. I understand that the slot-loading feature does not accommodate mini-discs, so what are the ways that I can get this footage to where I want it?
    I tried to email the folder with the video files in it, but I cannot open it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Lyndon,
    as I see, we have two problems to solve:
    * getting the data
    * using the data
    as you wrote, and that is correct, please don't slip any miniDVD into your drive.. some say, no prob, many broke their drives doing so...
    so, you wrote, you email the folder... 1.4Gb of data... mailing? how did you accomplish that? what is the size of that data/folder/whatever which is on your Mac?
    if the miniDVD was "finalized" (read camcorders manual) you should see a folder called VIDEO_TS, containing many... stuff. you should be able to "open" that folder by using your Mac's dvdplayer app (choose open folder)... plays fine? ok, step 2...
    Step 2)
    welcome to step 2! <<note to myself: don't watch too much Python!>>
    now, we need conversion...
    in the list in Sue's posting, choose DVD2DV... a good beginners prg AND it offers a tryout (stamps some watermark in the pic, but anyhow)...
    try it, use it - when ok, buy it!
    come back for further questions...
    and now to something completely different.............

  • How to burn DVD disc of iMovie playable on Blueray

    For years I have been easily creating movies with my vacation photos, adding effects, music, transitions and titles, etc. on my PC using Windows software and then burning the movie to a blank DVD+R disc which has always been playable on every DVD and Blue Ray player that I have tried (mine is a Panasonic model BD35).  I have recently made a transition to a Mac (the one with 27" screen and Yosemite system) and have learned how to use iMovie and, after much trial and error, have used free software, called "burn" to make a DVD that only plays on an older LG DVD player (model LDA 830) - however, the disc is "unsupportable " on my Blue Ray player (I also used a trial version of "Aimer", with the same result).  After spending several hours with an Apple support expert in their iMovie Department, I tried a slightly different method (that he had discovered from a customer with the same issue) using only the Apple DVD/CD external burner and whatever system it has for burning discs.  For me, this effort resulted in a disc that is "unsupported" on my BlueRay player and "error" on my DVD player.  The Apple expert suggested getting Apple TV - yeah, buy more Apple stuff and that solves everything! This issue has been a popular one with Apple computers and so I am amazed that it has not found an elegant solution by now.  This should not require an Einstein to achieve the result desired by many customers (as opposed to whatever result Apple is aiming at), but maybe there is one out there who can also communicate the solution in easy to understand steps?  Help, please?!?

    I am beginning to think that I should have stuck to user-friendly Windows.
    As Barney-15E noted, you can still purchase and use the boxed versions of iLife with Yosemite. Pretty cheap at only $30 - $35. It has iMovie to create your video sequence, and iDVD to author the disks from what you build in iMovie.
    Ruthless people with cold blood coursing through their veins run Apple - probably descendants of the fictional Mr. Potter from "It's a Wonderful Life"!  Ahhhh.. There, that feels better.
    I like it!
    Unfortunately, the reality is DVD and Blu-ray is heading the way of floppy disks. Here's an interesting headline I ran across today. No Surprise: DVD Sales Plunged Over 40 Percent Last Year. Thing is, that statement was from 2011, marking a 40% drop from 2010 with sales of 47 billion. Sound like a lot? Not compared to how far the medium has fallen in just three more years. Only 12.2 billion in 2014.
    Apple completely dropped DVD Studio Pro, and Apple isn't the only one to blame. Adobe also dropped all further development of Encore, it's DVD and Blu-ray authoring app. CS6 was the last version of that we'll ever see. You can still get it if you have the CC subscription. You choose to install an older version of Premiere Pro. It then installs Premiere Pro CS6 and Encore CS6. You then uninstall Premiere Pro CS6 since you don't need it; you already have Premiere Pro CC.
    The mistake the industry is making is that not everyone in the world has access to high speed Internet. Sure, I can "purchase" my movies from Amazon and other online sources, but I can only watch my purchased movies or shows if a) I have Internet access, and b) it's fast enough where I am at the time to stream it. There is no such problem with disks. Take them with you and watch them anywhere. The only fault they have is either losing the disk, or damaging it.

  • Burning disc in iMovie- sometimes yes, mostly no.

    OK, here's my situation.
    I recently finished editing footage from a 2 camera shoot of a friend's band in iMovieHD. It came out pretty cool. I want to burn a few DVDs. I'm meeting with some difficulties. So far I HAVE been able to burn 2 DVDs successfully- I gave one to a friend and the band is taking the other to be professionally reproduced, but I'm having a mother of a time making any more, and have had like five attempts to burn DVDs fail.
    The 2 times I was successfull I started off in iMovie, clicked on "share", then from the share menu clicked "iDVD", I made a little menu w/pictures and all in iDVD, and hit "burn". It took like about 4 hours to burn the disc, but a working disc was made.
    HOWEVER when I try to burn another disc from the finished iDVD project
    with the menus I made intact (without entering iDVD through iMovieHD first,
    ya follow?) it all goes along OK until I get to the "encoding audio" portion of the burn, the program freezes and remains unresponsive. Eventually, if I leave it long enough (ie overnight) it will finally spit out the disc and give me the
    message "errors were detected during the burning of the DVD" or something
    like that. That DVD is still blank and is recognized as blank by both the
    computer and my DVD player.
    I really only need to make 1 more copy of this particular movie, but I make a Christmas movie for my family every year, and in the past have always run it off to VHS. This year I want to burn it to DVD. But it's like 20 copies I'll need to make, I really don't want to have to rebuild a menu every time I want to burn a copy of a movie. Any thoughts on why I can't run off subsequent copies?
    Oh, also, I tried using the "Save As Image" option, and I had the same failure when it reached the "encoding audio" stage.
    Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Bonus follow-up question: I clicked on "recent items" and saw that each of my attempts to burn a disc is stored under a new title (My Great Movie 3, My Great movie 4, My Great Movie 5, etc...) If I click on that it takes me to the movie, with the menu intact (each menu I made was a little bit different), it's all still stored there for each one. So obviously this is eating up a good deal of storage space. The only version I would like to save is the first one I managed to run off.
    I can't for the life of me figure out how to delete the others.
    Any thoughts?
    If it helps at all, i'm running iDVD 5.0.1 and Movie 5.0.2

    Are you starting your procedure to create a disk from within iMovie? If so try the following:
    1 - first move all of those newly created iMovie project files to the trash - don't empty just yet.
    2 - open the original iMovie project and make sure it's as you want it. Then close.
    3 - Open iDVD, select your theme, etc. and save. Leave open.
    4 - open your iMovie project package in the Finder by Option-clicking on it and selecting "Show Package Contents" in the menu.
    5 - navigate to the Shared Movies/iDVD folder. In there will be a .mov file of your project.
    6 - drag that .mov file into the open iDVD window (do not drop into a drop zone if there is one). This makes a button to start the movie.
    7 - now try a Save as Disk Image.
    Remember that at the audio encoding portion of the encoding there will be a very long wait. It's not know if it's a bug or if it just takes that long to encode the audio but it will eventually get past that and complete the project. Hopefully this route will be successful. Just follow the usual iDVD encoding recommendations of no other applications running, turn off energy saver, etc. Good luck.

  • How do i transfer  movie from Sky+ hard disc to imovie?

    Struggling here guys. Is this operation possible?
    Need to edit a tv programme using imovie, and it is recorded on sky+ hard drive.
    Thought maybe i could use a dvd recorder to get the footage, and then play dvd on my g5 imac. How would I then be able to import it into imovie?
    My dvd recorder is dvd+r and dvd+rw, will this work?
    No ilink output on sky box just usual scart, optical etc.
    New to Macs and really need a soloution for this as the footage is stuff that i am in (im an actor) and i want to make up my own showreels instead of forking out a fortune for someone else to do it.
    Thanks in advance.

    You have two options.
    1) In this context, the sky box is like a VHS VCR:
    From VHS to DVD
    Give New Life to Old Movies

    2) You can rip the finished DVD:

  • Is it possible to export a video clip from DVD player to iMovie '09?

    If I load a homemade DVD onto my iMac using Disk Utility and then import either the entire disc or portions of the disc into iMovie, that works just fine. However I noticed that some clips are missing in iMovie, even though they are on the iMac in form of a .dmg file on the desktop. The same file that was used to import in to iMovie. If I look at this file using DVD player, everything is there, but some of these clips are missing in the event window. So I created a video clip in DVD player of those pieces missing in iMovie and now how can I get these into iMovie?

    Hey, best way to import video from a DVD video disc for editing is to acctually have a simple video file. Use Handbrake or MPEG StreamClip to read the disc and create a video file off the video stream.
    You could also set in and out points anc manually create several clips, which may help with playback and rendering for editing. I don't know how extensive you're going to get in your editing with iMovie...
    Hope that helped.

    Hi jay4,
    welcome to the  board
    1) iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders
    2) slot-in drives can get damaged by inserting non-standard-size DVDs…
    3) disks have to be finalized first, read your camera's manual…
    4) DVD uses a delivery format, not meant for any further processing as editing…
    5) many options, to import DVDs:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast6/7 allows converting to dv/import dvd, hit apple-k

  • How to transfer DVD RAM (MPeg 2) videos into imovie?

    I just bought an IMAC with OS X and Tiger to transfer all my DVD RAM discs into imovie, only to find out imac doesn't recognize the camera (Hitachi DZ-MV100A). Does anyone know of a drive I can buy to connect to the IMAC that would allow me to transfer, or the most straitforward way through software to transfer?
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4)
    Thanks, Clay

    using a DVDcamcoder you stumble into the following hurdles to go:
    * DVDcamcorders don't support the firewire protocol
    * slot-in drives can get damaged, inserting non-standard-shaped disks (does your camera use normal or miniDVDs?)
    * your disks have to be finalized in your camera - read camera's manual how to accomplish that...
    after that, you can handle these DVDs as normal ones (selfmade have no copyprotection, so no need of usage of any Ripper/Handbrake..)
    you will realize a loss of quality, due to the nature of DVDs, which use a deivery-format, not meant for further processing, but we do read reports here, some people are still satisfied...
    your options are, in recommended order:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast6/7 allows converting to dv/import dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camera with anlogue-in to DVD-player and copy to tape/use as converter

  • My old iMovie is gone dumb and will not fully open

    I was just ready to burn my movie to a disc and iMovie (Old Clapboard version) went haywire. HELP!

    I don't know what version of iMovie you are using, nor the Mac OS X version (that's always helpful when posting questions).
    However, usually when iMovie has the type of problem you mention, it's advisable to firstly trash the preference file. Here's how to go about it for iMovie '11 on Mountain Lion (similar methods apply for other versions):
    Go to your Home folder <your user name>/Library/Preferences (NOT the Library folder at the top level in Macintosh HD). Similar to Lion, on Mountain Lion (10.8.3), the Home Library folder will be hidden (unlike pre-Lion OS X versions). To access it, click and hold down Go in the Finder menu bar, then press and hold down the Option key on the keyboard - the Library folder will appear in the drop down list. Slide the pointer down to Library and, as you release the pointer, the folder will open in Finder. Now you can navigate to the Preferences folder.
    In your user Library/Preferences folder, locate a file named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist". With iMovie closed, drag this file to the Desktop. When next opened, iMovie will create a fresh preference file with the default settings (this happens in the background as iMovie is loading).
    If iMovie now opens and appears to be working properly, you can change the default settings in the menu item "IMovie > Preferences", as desired. Also, it's now safe to drag the old preference file to the Trash. Trashing the file will not harm any existing Events or Projects.
    Note that these instructions are for iMovie '11 (currently version 9.0.9). For users on earlier versions, the preference file has a different but similar name. For example, for iMovie '09 (that's version 8.0.6) the file is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Earlier versions may or may not have a number in the name, for example, "com.apple.iMovie.plist"
    If this doesn't fix the problem with iMovie crashing, please come back as I have another possible solution to offer.
    John

    Thanks.  I do not have the experience on burning discs from iMovie for the movie after editing (ie for video discs players).  It seems that i cannot find the relevant command in the tool bar for this purpsoe.  Would you please show me the way?
    The command is gone because iDVD has been discontinued by Apple. After Apple discontinued iDVD they removed the iDVD burning link from iMovie. I still use iDVD sometimes, only because I have an old copy.

    You have mentioned about Handbrake as a converter.  What is the RF no. Again, what is the best rate?  Furthermore, which format is more suitable or the best: H264 or mpeg 2/4?
    I don't know what RF means. When I have used HandBrake, I've used presets that apply to what I want to do, so I don't know the meaning of each individual setting. However, it appears that many of them are listed in the HandBrake User's Guide that is linked from the Help menu in the program:

    Photoshop is not amateur-level software, and although it can edit a video, it cannot burn a DVD. Unfortunately, because I still use iMovie, I haven't tried anything else. You might want to read the reviews of various DVD-burning applications in the Mac App Store.

  • IMovie messing up the contents

    Ok, I have got a website going, and make movies i iMovie 08 and publish it to iWeb. But the movie itself often gets "rearranged" by itself. I am NOT kidding. I can save the project upload it and everything seems fine, but the next time I open iMovie, some of the text can move to different places in the timeline. This is freeking me out, cause I have to redo the text and publish everything again. Including subsription to iTunes. Another issue is that when I drag and drop a trimmed clip to the so called "timeline" all the contents in the timeline disappears. I have to click on another project, before I go back to the project I work on, before I can continue. This happens once in a while.
    Any ideas? Maybe throw the mac out the window?

    I'm still trying to make my titles go wrong ..haven't succeeded yet, but I'll post back again if I do ..or even if I don't!
    It seems to me that this "re-positioning" may be due to a fault in the Project file, which is just a text file: it keeps a note of where things are positioned by the project's running time ..like this (..note that it also uses "control characters" beyond the usual 'ASCII' (printable) characters, so it looks like gobbledegook mixed in with normal letters ..NOTE, too, that the "non-printable" characters may not display properly here in these Discussion pages, as some of the "control characters" may have meanings or effects in HTML which may cause the display to behave oddly..)

    If the Project File becomes corrupt (..because there are two or more entries with the same, or damaged, parameters..) then that may cause the titles to "slip".
    (Karl Petersen, who used to post here, specialised in "repairing" damaged Project Files, and found that in earlier versions of iMovie an error in writing video frame timings ..a minus in front of a correct frame time, for instance.. would cause clips to be placed at the wrong part of the movie, or to have incorrect lengths. Nothing to do with user error, but a lack of 'robustness' within the way that the program was written.)
    Items which can affect the Project File are such things as (a) lack of spare hard disc space on the disc where the project lives ..i.e; usually the 'Movies' folder on the Mac's main hard disc ..or (b) an incorrectly-formatted external hard disc - if the Project is kept on an external disc. All discs holding iMovie Projects should be formatted as 'Mac OS Extended' (..either 'Journaled' or not..) and should NOT be formatted - as most are when they're new - as 'PC Exchange' for use with PCs instead of Macs.
    Do you edit your material on an external disc, or the Mac's internal disc? ..If external, is it formatted as 'MAC OS Extended'..?
    (..I'll keep trying to make my project go wrong; I'll post back later..)
