Tivo shenanigans.

Alright, I KNOW I'm overcomplicating things, and may be asking some danged dumb questions. Hopefully, you'll humor me. I've actually been looking, but, alas, the knowledge gods are spurning me for doubting there's an easy way.
So here's what I've got: a money issue, to start. I'm currently quite a bit poorer than I'd like, but hey, that happens. I also want to be able to do, well, what I want. And that is using a tivo and a powerbook to make life easy in the entertainment department.
What I've got is a room (let's say square to make it easy, measurements aren't too important. But it's not square. Anyway, let's say couch with projector over it, direct opposite wall is screen. To the left of the screen is receiver, dvd player, etc. The reason this matters to me is I can't easily plug a computer in to the TV and stereo, as they're about 15' apart. Again, remember I'm not currently able to spend a lot, nor would it make sense when I don't own the place.) A room in which I'd like to be able to have a tivo, I just found two TCD649080's (two tuner, 80 hour, series 2) for 55 each (seriously. New. From a store. Not off a truck) and my older Powerbook put to use. Ultimately, I'd like to be able to have my Powerbook just sitting there, have my macbook tell it to use TVShows (http://tvshows.sourceforge.net) for instance to download things I want, and then put them on the tivo to watch.
Yes, I can subscribe. I know. I'm not opposed. I'm thinking however that I would like to be able to browse all the shows I can download, and put them on the tivo. I've not been able to find a good way to put video on tivo, only take from.
So, long story short: Macbook controlling Powerbook (or even just Powerbook) able to export to Tivo.
Please let me know if you have any input, I know this is a backward way of doing things, but now that it's in my mind, well, it's in my mind. And yes, I know also that an EyeTV may be easier. But I'm digging the Tivo and the opps if I get the service.
So, input?

  • New .TV (pets, recipe, etc.) and Viacom channels not in zap2it or Tivo guides

So, it's been about a month since the new .tv channels came out and two days since the Viacom HD channels were introduced.  And zap2it.com, Tivo, etc. all still don't list ANY of the new channels in their programming guides.
I've opened cases with Tivo.  With Zap2it.  With Verizon.  Everyone points fingers saying it's the other's fault.
In the meantime, for the .TV channels that got added a while back, if you go to zap2it, or Tivo, you get "loor633" for channel name and "to be announced" for guide info for pets.tv.  You get "loor599" for Cars.tv.  You get "loor674" for MYDestination.tv.  Etc.
And for the Viacom channels, you also get nothing.  Just blank space with "to be announced" for programming info.
From what I understand, Verizon needs to tell Tribune that their channel lineup has changed.  And Tribune, Zap2it and Tivo all claim that Verizon hasn't done that.  Verizon, of course, is silent on the matter and the "fiber solutions center" says there is nothing they can do right now and that channel info for the .tv and Verizon channels might get added to online guides in a few MONTHS!?!?!?!?!?!?
Why does this seem to be a problem with Verizon's lineup and no one else's?  When I had Dish, Zap2it would have updated listings within 2 hours of new channel additions.  When I had Charter, both Zap2it and Tivo had channel guide info for new channels usually the day BEFORE the channel was added.  But Verizon doesn't seem to provide Tribune with new channel info / guide data at all.
Having had FIOS for less than two months, I'm not happy.  I'm almost certain the goal is for Verizon to get me to dump my lifetime Tivo service and instead pay them $15.99 for their DVR.  But trust me -- I'd rather go back to Charter first.

I do not understand why you folks are blaming Verizon for this. Please give me a moment to explain my theory.
First of all, I have been for a long time a very dissatisfied user of the FiOS Guide data. So dissatisfied that late last year I sent an email to Verizon's CEO expressing my dissatisfaction, and providing examples and pointers to various forum threads discussing the problem. I received maybe 4 or 5 phone calls about the issue, no resolution, but I was told the procedure for the FiOS Guide was this:
Each channel (say ESPN, whatever) develops the data, and sends it to FYI Television of Grand Prairie, TX (in the DFW area). FYI gathers the schedule info from all of the channel providers and once a day sends that data to Verizon. Verizon then inputs the data to the Guide and bingo, we see it, good or bad (lots and lots of bad IMO). I have no way to know if this is really the process, but this is the way it was explained and it makes sense to me.
Now, lets talk about one of the other guide providers for the Tivo or whatever. It seems to me that a very similar process would have to take place: channel to guide data collector to actual guide data provider (maybe the last two are one and the same?).
Now, where would Verizon be in this process for the other guide data providers? Seems to me nowhere, it should be the responsibility of the channel to notify the data provider that the channel is now on FiOS, what the channel name and number is, etc.
I am sure you will disagree with me, but where am I wrong? It seems to me you should be complaining to the channel providers, not Verizon.

  • Recording fios tv to DVD recorder with tivo/fios cablecard

ok this post is for my dad....and if ur thinking why the hack does he want a dvd recorder when they already have a tivo...don't ask my dad is kinda weird he still "tapes" shows on VHS tapes using vcr, and tapes radio shows on cassettes....then again he also still pyas his bills with a pen, a check and the us postal service.....
anyway, I didn't know much about the world of dvd recorders before a couple days ago, so I have a few questions before and if I actually decide to get him one.
Question 1: we currently have an HD TV with an HD tivo connected and a multistream verizon fios cablecard. My question is regarding copyright limitations....what prevents you from just recording any tv program onto dvd, as you still can onto a VHS? and what percentage of the channels/shows have this protection? like would he only be able to record from the original 12 or so broadcast channels? this is my main concern....he watched a lot of the sports channels like espn espn2 golf channel nbatv etc....
Question 2: also, when doing my research I thought of another benefit a dvd recorder may have. I have been putting all the family home videos which are on vhs onto dvd, but it's a bit of a process. I use an external usb capture device made by Hauppage hooked up to the VCR then the computer captures it realtime and generates an mpeg video file on my hard drive, THEN I have to spend the 1 or 2 hours it takes to convert to DVD format and burn with Nero so it can be played on a regular DVD player......so....question being....
can a standalone DVD recorder hook up to a VCR to transfer video direct to a DVD, or do you have to buy a DVD recorder with a built in VHS deck?
Question 3: oh and someone once told me that you can only play the recorded DVD's on the recorder, and not other regular DVD players...I couldn't believe this was actually true...but was he right?
    TIA!

    Answers:
Question 1: if the DVD recorder is connected to the TIVO there shouldn't be anything prohibiting him from recording. The signal sent out from the TIVO is an unencrypted feed that can be processed by anything (TV, VCR, DVD recorder, ETC). As long as theres no restrictions within the DVD recorder itself, you should be fine to record anything. This also means you have to record realtime (press play on TIVO and record on the DVD recorder and wait the amount of time for the event to end before pressing stop)
Question 2: You would need to talk to the tech support for your DVD recorder. Its going to depend on what types of video streams and formats it will accept as a source
Question 3nce again this is a question for the DVD recorder tech support, not Verizon. It depends on the file format that the recorder saevs the file as. Not only that, but different players also can read different formats. So you have to take a look at the recorder and the dvd play back device

  • Macbook+Tivo=No DVD Showing up

I would like to use my Macbook to play DVD movies on my TV. On my current setup I have the Tivo connected to my TV with A/V plugs (Yellow/Red/White).
I went to the Apple store and bought the Mini DVI to Video adapter, an S-Video Cable, and a Monster Audio cable that plugs into the headphone output on the MB and they Y's off into two Audio A/V plugs.
I tried to hook it up and watch a DVD and nothing happened. I have the S Video cable plugged into the DVI-Video adapter (which is plugged into the computer of course) and the other end plugged into the S-Video Output on the back of the Tivo. I have the Monster Cable plugged into the Headphone jack on the MB and the other end to the Audio Outputs on the back of the Tivo.
Turned everything on and nothing worked.
One thing that I think I am missing is someway to tell the Tivo to switch to the "Auxillary" output. How do I do that with Tivo. Thanks for everyones help.

Well, I had been writing something else but I'm gonna forget it and just try this again.
You need to get audio and video to your TV. Currently, with the set up to the Tivo, you have an S-Video connection on the Tivo end, which means you would need to use that to connect to your TV. If your TV has no S-Video, then that can't be done with that adapter you have. The Audio you have in a headphone jack to the 2 colors of composite cable for the left and right audio. That is probably more useful, as most TVs have composite inputs, but that would only give it the audio, and you would still need the sound. The easiest way is to have an adapter from your MacBook that has 2 cables on an end, one for headphone jack and the other for the mini-DVI and it switches it to a 3 cable (Red White and Yellow) Composite end that then you connect to the 3 color composite connections on your tv where the Tivo gets plugged in (unplug your Tivo and plug that in when using, it will not affect the Tivo and its recording process or anything) or if you have a second set of composite in connections on your TV, plug it in there and change the channel to the corresponding one (my TV has AV1 (tivo channel), AV2 (the side inputs which we use for the XBox) and FRONT (I have no idea what it is for as we have no front inputs at all, heh).
I have no idea if there is an adapter like this or not. I know that my portable 7 Inch LCD screen DVD Player has a nice little port on it that I use to attach one end of a cable, and the other end has the 3 color composite cables on it so I can connect it to a TV for DVD viewing (and it automatically turns off the display on the player as it is not needed). But the MacBook has that odd mini-DVI plug and I think they expect everyone to have tech TVs that are plasma or lcd and have S-Video and component inputs, DVI and/HDMI etc. Mine doesn't. Coaxial and Composite cables are all it has. But if you could find an adapter that took the mini-DVI and had the other side the same as the portable DVD player plug port, then you could use that cable to attach to it and then to the TV (I could even send you mine if it worked as I never use the cable much less my DVD player anymore as I have 3 laptops now).
Demand a mini-DVI to tri-color composite adapter if one isn't available... I would buy one. Maybe... I can't use any of the other types though thats for sure.
    Sorry, I tried my best...

  • Can I add a Tivo codec to Premier Elements?

I have Premier Elements 11, on a Windows 7 (64 bit)  machine. I also have Tivo Roamio, with their transfer software which will copy shows from the Tivo box onto my computer hard drive. I have recorded some movies I want to share with my kids when they come home from college this summer (one-time viewing, strictly private, in-home only). The video transfers show up as FILENAME.Tivo files; if I want, I can convert those into mpg files, via software by Pavtube. However, some shows will not convert completely; and, if I could avoid a time-consuming (and possibly lossy; not sure about that) conversion step, that would be nice.
So, the question becomes, can I install some codec into Premier Elements, that will allow it to recognize and handle filename.Tivo files?
If anyone can tell me where to find that kind of codec, and give me the basics of a step-by-step installation, to get the codec into a location where the Premier software can find and use it, that would be very appreciated.

    Another quick update -
I've been trying the ctivo software, and have not seen any advantages over the combination of "Tivo Desktop" to transfer the files, followed by Pavtube to convert them into other formats that Premier can handle. Both software types seem to fail on the exact same files, and the 12 minute mark is a common, almost thematic failure point. Neither one provides any indication (at least, none that I can find) of why, and/or what went wrong, or whether I can do anything to fix it. Each time I have I tried one or more additional attempt, I have always gotten the same result.
ctivo provides a yellowish "Failed" color and message on its progress bar, with no other info.
Pavtube doesn't, and I have to check each converted file, to see if it's a good file. On occasion, the converted file size is only a small fraction of the expected number, and I'll know it's bad without checking further. More commonly, I have to check the final seconds of any file, to see if it still has a good picture. If any file conversion fails at some point, the entire screen shifts into static gobbledy-****, and I have never seen any converted file shift back to a good signal after a failure point like that.
I'm going to start looking into posts and threads at videohelp.com, to see if anyone there can help.

  • HT2305 I am using an Iomega Home Network Media Server Cloud Edition. I need to know to how to install Bonjour to the Iomega so that it will run my TiVo Desktop Program to transfer media files to/from the TiVo units to/from the Home Network Drive.  Help ?

TiVo support has already advised me that Bonjour Browser is needed so that the TiVo can communicate with the Iomega.  The Iomega already has installed Apples' AFP protocol.
The only way that I can currently transfer or access any files on the Iomega Home Network Cloud Drive with TiVo is if the folder on the Iomega Drive is listed in the TiVo Desktop Plus software that runs the TiVo server. This means that my laptop has to be continually running non-stop for files to transfer or for me to access them.
I am looking for a way where TiVo will recognize the Iomega Home Network Server just as it recognizes the other TiVo unit on my home network.  TiVo menus have a place for adding an app that is TiVo compatiable; however, I have not been able to find any.
Can someone please help?  TiVo has advised me that there 3rd Party software out in tech world that is capable of running the Tivo Desktop Server better than the TiVo Desktop Server Plus program itself but I have been unable to locate it..
    Thanks

Just had a look at this: http://www.ufsexplorer.com/inf_xfs_nas.php and decided it's more hassle than it's worth so going to restore my files the sloooowwww way. Anyone know a good way to sync data to the new drive?

  • STB jumps up one channel after Tivo recording starts

Motorola QIP2500-3 with Standard Def Tivo box.
Program is set to record on channel 50 at 9:00 PM.
Both the STB and the Tivo banner change to channel 50 and start recording, as expected.
Almost immediately the STB changes to channel 51 while the Tivo banner continues to show Channel 50 info.
Therefore the wrong program gets recorded.
If you catch it in time you can use your Verizon remote to change the channel back.
The expected Tivo message: Currently Recording with the 2 options-Do not change channel, continue recording OR Change the channel, stop recording, does not appear so somehow there's a disconnect with FIOS.
I've seen this with other channels, 2 or 3 digits only, not 4-9.  It also occurs with channel changing not during recording.
Others have posted this on TiVo msg boards however the solution to change from the Serial cable to IR emitters doesn't always work.
Because it's the FIOS STB that's changing channels incorrectly, I thought I would post here.  This has been occuring for about 2 months now.

Anyone else seeing this?  Found a solution?
    Thanks,
    Patty

I've begun getting this same problem around the same time period.  I assume it is a Verizon issue as it appears to be a problem with the STB.  I am getting sufficiently tired of problems with the Verizon equipment (a DVR that mostly leaves me stunned anyone could offer such a piece of junk for sale, or rental as it were) that I'm either going to get new Tivos and use them with cards or shift to another provider.  Right now I am using one of their DVRs and a Tivo/STB combo.

  • Fed Up with FiOS DVR 7216 - Convince Me NOT to Buy a TIVO

My network:  Mid Tier Internet, MultiRoom DVR on Std Def TV, HD STB (to share DVR), 2 basic STBs.
I can't tell if it's the DVR itself or if it's the way the programming comes into the house (i.e. bouncing around the internal network), but too often I get chop.  The audio stream stays intact and live, but the video stream chops and drops maybe 5 to 10 frames per second making it really really painful when watching sports.
This happens on live TV, it happens on multiple channels, it happens on DVR playback when the DVR isn't recording something else, and DVR playback when the DVR is recording something else.  And this is happening on the TV to which the DVR is connected (so I don't think it's related to multi-room streaming.)  Specifically, it happens a lot and under a host of different circumstances.
I have done a few tests on the DVR playback side since I can control it.  I am watching, I get chop, I flip back 10 seconds and play through the same time period again.... no chop.  That tells me it wasn't recording it choppy, it was playing it back choppy, which leads me to conclude this DVR sucks.  It can't handle the most basic function of a DVR - playback on the tv to which it's connected without any issues.  A VCR would do better than this piece of junk.
I pay $20 / month for this DVR.  If I have to shell out $300 for a Tivo XL and then pay the same $20 / month to get a DVR that works and doesn't chop up all my programming, then it's worth it to me.  Oh, and don't get me started on how lame I think the DVR software is.  When I pause a sporting event with virtually nothing saved on the DVR, I only get 10 minutes of pause?  And then when it unpauses it takes me back to live tv instead of resuming from the pause?  Absolutely ridiculous - it makes the thing completely unusable for my purposes.  I don't know if this 1.9 software will make a difference, but I'm pretty fed up with this piece of crap DVR BOTH from a hardware and software perspective.
Can somebody shed any light on these issues or give me any reason to not ditch the FiOS DVR?  Even worst, is there any indication these problems could be deeper rooted than the DVR?  I would be REALLY **bleep** if I move to TIVO and end up with the same issues.

Have you contacted Verizon support about your problem?  Sounds like your STB is sick.  So if you haven't let Verizon work the problem, you have an important step to take before you consider Tivo or any other solution.

  • Best Mac/HDdisplay/dvdplaying/tivo setup

Hi, I need help coming up with a hardware and peripherals spec to best solve our "dilemma".
Life is too hard and we are going to live on a boat!
We will have access to broadband and cable services. We both need our own laptops for work on the boat. One of us will need a new intel Mac.
One of the requirements while on the boat is to be able to watch paid digital TV with the ability to time shift programmes, record and burn shows to dvd/store them and watch rental movies on dvd.
A big factor is space, so we need a flat external screen around 20-23", but whether it is lcd or plasma not sure. I suppose HD is the way to go, but my Titanium screen with downloaded video clips looks pretty sharp to me so that is the sort of quality to aim for.
In general we are after the minimum of hardware cluttering the place up and we have to be able to head out to sea with everything stored safely and easily away.
My first thought for the TV/dvd playing side of things was a mac mini + lcd screen or an iMac, and either of those would need some sort of EyeTV hardware and software/Tivo. I am however thinking it would be more practical ie one CPU less, if our laptops are able to run an external monitor, so if we are both using our laptops, one of them could still run the TV side of things on an external "TV screen". (So the MBP seems a good option for power work and running two screens.)
I guess it reads like we are tv heads, bt not really. Only occasionally do we sit surfing the net separately while watching TV together, we hardly watch any TV now, but we are both running our laptops 24/7 and need the option to have a tv running too.
I see a few products around on the dvr/tivo side of things, but dont know which if any will accomplish what we are trying to do - Evolution TV or HDTV, Eye TV?
Also with reference to the "TV hardware" not sure what different PAL, SECAM etc options mean and how we need to proceed to make sure we are able to hook up in other places in the world.
And what are the basic advantages or important things to be aware of re TiVo, DirectTV, Titan TV, tvtv? These are all just words to us, but seem to be intrinsic to what we are trying to do
I am not saying cost isnt an issue, but primarily we want to get the set up right, and as I am conditioned with a Mac mentality, set up so that things just work.
    Can anyone please advise me.
    thanks

For your TV display, I recommend the Apple 20inch Cinema Display. Although it costs $799, it will serve double duty as an excellent external display for your laptops and/or a Mac mini if you get one. It is very light, has a low profile, and has small foot print - perfect for tight places. Although it isn't full HD 1080 resolution, it is very close, and 720P content will look great on it, especially if the source is a Mac or PC.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=9 55BB9EF&nclm=AppleDisplays
Even though you do not sound like "TV people" you might still want to consider a MacMini to serve as a full time TV time shifter. And you could still use it as a 3rd computer (in addition to your laptops) when you want (and it will be hooked up to your cinema display already). The MacMini is small, light, etc. so its perfect for this. It just seems like it would be a hassle to manage the display and unplug and replug a display into your laptops just to watch TV. Also, by leaving the MacMini on when you are off the boat or busy doing other things, you will be able to schedule it record programs without having to leave on of your laptops hooked up.
Also, by setting up the mac mini as a wireless base station (System preferences, sharing, internet, etc.) you'll be able to connect to it and grab video files (or other files) to watch TV in bed, or watch different programs on your different laptops at the same time. You could probably just stream the videos right off the macmini without copying, either through standard filesharing, or with itunes or front row.
Keep in mind that eyeTV or or any-other Tivo like solution will not allow you to receive HD content from your cable or Satalite TV provider... everything will be in standard TV resolutions... except for HD content you download from the internet. But thats OK, and remember that video content eats up hard drive space, so if you can live with standard quality TV your better off anyway.
I know this isn't a complete answer to your post. But i gotta run. There are many ways to do what you want to do, but at the end of the day, even if you don't watch TV often, don't underestimate the hassle factor of hooking up and managing cables - get a dedicated machine.

  • TV and TiVo - Please Help!

Okay, I have a problem that may force me to return my TV. We have 2 TV's in our house. Only one is an HDTV and BOTH have TiVo. Getting rid of TiVo is NOT an option because I love it and can't imagine life without it since having it. Also, we are obligated to keep them for the 2 year agreement or face major penalty fees. We also have DVD recorders hooked up to each tv. HOW do I add the TV to this setup. Apple has said that they have no info on how to set it up with TiVo which I find ridiculous since TiVo has so many subscribers. Can anyone help? Do you have TV and TiVo and have it working? Thanks in advance!!!

an I just get the HD cable for the AppleTV and plug it directly into the TV? Will I have to view it on another input (Cable and TiVo are set to Video 2).<</div>
Well, you have a few options.
If your HDTV has both HDMI and component inputs, then connect the Tivo to the component and the Apple TV to the HDMI, then use the HDTV remote to change the "source".
Or, buy a received with both HDMI and component input (and a single output to the HDTV) and use the receiver remote to change the "source".

  • I just purchased a wireless connection for my Tivo but the signal strength from my airport express does not allow the tivo to load data. How do I increase the signal strength?

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it  is in the another room. I am only receiving one  bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.

There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation:  (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together.  (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express.  Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit.  (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you.  (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help.  If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

Neither my Tivos nor my Aria scale can connect to my router.
Tivo sent me this page: http://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/402
I am not sure that I am well-versed enough in router speak to figure it out on the admin dashboard.
Anybody who has run into this and has advice for me?
I have gone through the Tivo settings and Aria set-up, but both produce errors. For Tivo, it can't find the DHCP server. Aria just gives me a Wifi error message.
    HELP!

Interestingly enough, as soon as I plugged in our old trusted ActionTec, my Tivo connected without a problem, and I got my Motorola NIM100 to stop blinking. Go figure. On the phone now with Verizon (on hold) to figure this out. If not, it's going back.

  • Apple TV & Regular TV Listings vs TIVO - HELP!

Maybe this is an obvious answer, but *how do regular TV listings and shows work with Apple TV*? I would like to have Apple TV for movies, Youtube videos, etc..., but I also want to watch my regular TV listings when I choose to - news, some daytime shows, Primetime shows, etc... I cannot find an answer to this question anywhere under the heading of Apple TV. Perhaps it is because it is so obvious. Also, *how does Apple TV compare to Tivo*? It is obviously a way to tape shows in a DVR type of way, but how is it like Tivo or different from Tivo? I understand that with Apple TV hooked up to different TV's one can share taped shows throughout the household, but the rest of it confuses me. If some kind person could explain this to me or point me to the URL that addresses this I would be MOST APPRECIATIVE. Our Tivo contract runs out in a month and we want a change drastically. Thank you for ANY HELP!!!!

True that you can't use it like a TiVo, but I have two now and love them. I plan on never buying another DVD player (even HD) ever again. The biggest surprise for me is that I didn't realize how they would get the most use - as a movie server. I've ripped all my DVDs (like I did my CDs years ago) and imported and converted all of our home movies. The kids now can watch everything we have upstairs or downstairs without having disks everywhere. I can't believe how often home movies get played now. This is in addition to renting movies or buying the occasional show that didn't get on TiVo, or having our entire music and photo library at our fingertips.
No if we could only get Hulu on this thing (legit).
