TIVO to TIVO and Express

My two Series II TIVOs can see my AP Snow base station, the Internet (connected to my cable router via ethernet), can be see with TIVO Desktop on my iMac and Dell Win XP, but they cannot see each other. I've done all the TIVO things but no joy (used to work in another house and I don't want to move things around in this house).
My AP Express profile works fine for my wireless speakers in the back yard.
I want to setup another profile where the TIVOs will use Express when it is placed next to them. SO far that configuration eludes me.
1. I think I want to set up Express as a remote base station extending the signal so the TIVO's USB adapters get the strongest signal possible. How is this done? Speaker and USB ports will not be used on the Express.
2. I want the TIVO to TIVO transfers to either:
- go through Express wirelessly, if fast enough; or
- use an Ethernet hub attached to the Express and connect the TIVOs to the hub for "a direct hard wire transfer". The TIVOs still need to get to the internet via the AP main base station for their updates.
I'm not sure WDS will work:
- there are two non-Apple) Linksys USB 802.11b and one Dell Mini WiFi 11b adapters) in play.
- can separate WDS and Itunes speaker profiles co-exist?
If WDs will work, how do I set up up? It sounds like a pain to correct if I get it wrong.
Before upgrading to 802.11g, I'm holding out for 11n and mixed adapter support from Apple.
All advice on questions above appreciated. Mike

Dude,
All I can tell you is how I set it up. I have 2 Macs, a Xbox 360, 2 dual tuner series II TiVos, and a single tuner series II TiVo, all running on a wireless 802.11g network created with a AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express. I live in a townhouse, so we run 128 bit WEP (since the TiVos won't recognize WPA security) with a 13 digit password (dictated by the Xbox). All TiVos use official TiVo brand 11g USB adapters, and the Xbox uses it's 360 brand adapter. The Express is wirelessly slaved to the Extreme using the AirPort Utility, so I can play my iTunes downstairs on the iMac right next to the Extreme and direct it through the speakers plugged into the Express upstairs. Works like a charm, all the while allowing the transfer of programs recorded on 1 TiVo wirelessly to any other TiVo. The only problem is that the TiVos tend to restart every once and a while. It happens if you leave it alone for a few hours, and then attempt to watch something. If you unplug the wireless adapter it won't restart. TiVo support recognizes the problem and are supposedly working on a fix. They only know it is a problem with wireless adapters so they haven't promised when they will fix it. Any way, I hope this helps.
Oh yeah, I forgot that my wife is also on the network with her piece of crap Dell laptop and a T-Mobile wireless card.

  • Need help. VERY low audio with Tivo series 2 and Fios

I just had Fios installed and want to use my Tivo Series 2 DVR.  However, the audio can barely be heard.  Any advice?
    Here is my setup
    1.  Motorola set top digital box with HDMI output to Television.  Everything is Excellent
    2.  Motorola set top box S video output to Tivo.  Red and white AV to Tivo audio input.
In this setup, my standard def channels have excellent picture, but the volume is just way to low.
I have run the Tivo setup procedures.
When I try running Coax from the set top box to Tivo, I get NOTHING.  No audio or video.
Is the motorola incapable of putting out enough audio via AV when HDMI is also connected?
    Help
    (please)

    Keyboards:
The motorola is connected simultaneously to TV via the HDMI output, and to my TIVO, via S Video and AV outputs.
When the TV source is set to HDMI, all is perfect (in fact, stunning).  Great sound.
When I change the TV to receive S Video from the Tivo, I receive an excellent standard def picture, but audio that I have to crank up to full scale.
I have not tried Motorola to Tivo alone, with no HDMI connection to the TV.
I do think your idea to use a second box (a simple SD digital converter) to hook up to the Tivo makes great sense.  If I split the feed, sending one to the HD settop box, and another to Tivo, then I get the best of both worlds.   I will get HD from the motorola, and can separately record on the Tivo.
I am still a bit concerned about audio volume, although the Tivo boards seem to say that Tivo works well with Fios.

  • Can't get Airport Extreme and Express to join same network

I recently bought an Airport Extreme so I could create a wireless network with my Airport Express. THis way I could browse the internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time. After spending hours trying to get both AP Extreme and Express linked together in a WDS network, I have failed time and time again. I have no problem setting the AP Extreme as the WDS main. My iMac and laptop connect to the AP Extreme just fine. I can set up the AP Express to stream music via iTunes to my stereo without problems. But to get them working together in the same network has got me stumped.
I've set the AP Extreme as WDS main and Express as WDS remote. They are both set to same wireless channel. Where am I going wrong? Is it a 802.11n/802.11g compatibility issue?
    I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

    adrian,
I have done this a dozen time today with different base stations like yours.
The only thing I can think of is this:
    1. With the WDS Main, make sure you have the address of the Remote in the box.
    2. With the WDS Remote, make sure you have the address of the Main in the box.
    3. Make sure both base stations have the same network name in the wireless tab.
    Then restart both base stations.
Let us know what you find out.

  • I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use?

I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use? Essentially having two wifi connection off the same network? If so how do I set this up?

Extending using a wireless connection always results in a performance compromise.
If the Express is going to extend using a wireless connection, then the Express will need to be located about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the Extreme and Express, the better the network will operate.
Remember......the Express can only "extend" the quality and signal speed that it receives, so it needs to be located where it can get a very good signal from the Extreme. Although Apple cleverly uses the term "extend", a more accurate term for the Express would be "repeater".
If the Express will extend by connecting to the Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection......highly recommended for best performance.....then the Express can be located exactly where you need more wireless coverage. There is no signal loss at all through the Ethernet cable, so the Express gets a full speed signal no matter where it might be located.
Post back to let us know which way to you want to go.

  • Is there a known conflict between an extreme g base station and express n in a roaming network?

I have an extreme g base station connected to a cable modem, an express g connected to a linksys switch via ethernet, and an express n connected to the same switch via Ethernet. The switch is connected to the extreme g base station by Ethernet as well. They are all set up to be a roaming network with 128 bit WEP security. I made two changes to the network recently. I went from a WDS setup with the extreme g and express g, which was generally stable but slow, to the roaming setup above, and I added the express n. Now something is causing the network to loose connectivity at least once a day, requiring a restart of the extreme g. My hunch is the express n is causing problems for the older g units.
Does anyone know if this is a known problem and if there is a solution?
    Thanks.

    For what its worth.....
I have mixed older "b/g" and newer "n" devices in "extended" and "roaming" networks for years, and have never experienced any issues with this type of setup.
As a Community Support "regular", I can say that I cannot recall having seen the type of issue that you have described, but other users may comment with different opinions.

  • Trying to reconnect airport express to time machine but express not showing up in base station.  unfortunately clicked forgot in airport utility and express no longer shows up.  how to reconnect?

trying to reconnect airport express to time machine but express not showing up in base station.  unfortunately clicked forgot in airport utility and express no longer shows up.  how to reconnect?

I would recommend setting the wireless encryption on the AirPort Express BEFORE configuring it for the AirPort Extreme in this case. This issue also comes up often when configuring AirPorts into a WDS.
If setting up security in my recommend order does not work, temporarily connect the Express by Ethernet to the Extreme; make the security changes, and then, move the Express back to the desired location.

  • Best way to set-up U Verse, Time Capsule and Express to Extend Network

I'm trying to extend my WIFI signal with AP Express and TC using an AT&T U Verse router. Neither the Express nor the TC are directly connected to the U Verse router. Both the Express and the TC show they are connected to the network but when I try and edit the settings to extend the network rather than join the network they both show as not connected any longer. Before on DSL the Express and TC were connected as extending the network (slow but connected). The house is 3 levels U Verse in in the basement. Trying to get a connection on the 3rd floor. We have multiple iPads, iPhones, Mac Book Pro's, an i Mac and Direct TV receivers.
What's the best way to set this up to extend the range of what we have?

You cannot extend range from non-apple routers.
So both the TC and express will join the wireless of the uverse and then become dumb clients..
You need at least one of the two units plugged into the uverse by ethernet.. then the other device can extend that network.
Consider using EOP adapters if your distance is such that even with the correct setup you don't get the range you need. Or better still do it properly and wire it with ethernet.
It is possible to use the Express as a bridge..
So say setup on the first floor.. a wireless bridge from the express to the uverse.. then plug the ethernet into the TC.. and use the TC in bridge mode.. it will not be fast but it can work.
Reset everything to factory and start over.. as you will not be able to get this working without a full reset of the apple routers.
Note still not ideal but it might give you more range than extend wireless with say express plugged into the uverse.

  • Extreme and Express help... can't seem to co-exist?

Hey guys and gals. I'm having a bit of a problem with my AirPort Extreme and Express and need your help/recommendations. Okay first some background info...
I have a MacBook Pro (C2D), an Apple TV, and an iPhone that all connect to my AirPort Extreme (n draft spec). I had the AirPort Extreme running at n (b/g compatible). No problem.
Then I decided to get an AirPort Express so that I could stream my music from iTunes over to my Allen & Heath Xone 92 mixer and thus my nice Mackie studio monitors (i.e. use AirTunes to stream music to speakers). In hooked up all the hardware (i.e. the monster cable and the power cord) for the Express, then installed the supplied AirPort CD. I then phoned Apple Care because I didn't want to mess anything up. I don't remember what steps I took exactly with the representative, but basically at the end of the day we got the music to stream. Great! Well not so much... I didn't realize while I was on the phone that we had actually set up (I think this is correct) 2 "networks"... one was the AirPort Extreme, the other was the AirPort Express. So if I wanted to use the internet, I had to choose Extreme. If I wanted to stream music, I had to choose Express and no choice of using both at the same time.
So yesterday I phone Apple again... Explain the situation, and we hard reset both the Extreme and Express, this time setting up the Express as a WDS (wireless distribution system). Now I can use the internet and stream music at the same time. Great! Well not so much... now whenever I stream music it cuts out for minutes at a time, not really working properly.
So I phone Apple for the third time... We change a whole bunch of settings, delete preference files (BIG mistake... reset all my energy settings, .Mac, etc.... thanks Apple!!!!) and at the end of like 4 different scenarios basically reset the Extreme and Express, but this time under the guise that the reason the last setup was cutting out while streaming music was that the Extreme was using WPA2 security and the Express only really likes WEP. So I change to WEP when I hard reset the Extreme, hard reset the Express, do a WDS and everything seems to be working (while on the phone with Apple). Great! Not so much... hahahaha.
So now the issue is that I can't connect to the AirPort Extreme network all the time... it shows up under my lists of networks (along with some of my neighbor's networks) but OS X will not automatically connect to it. When I select it I get the "error while trying to connect" error. Also my iPhone will not automatically connect to the AirPort Extreme either.
So basically what the heck is going on??? How can I have my AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, iPhone, and Apple TV all co-exist on a network and be able to at the same time browse the internet and stream music over AirTunes???
Sorry for the long read... Please help!
    -Keith

Unless you have a requirement to extend your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) wireless network with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), then you only needed to set up the AX in "client mode" to stream iTunes.
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over Ethernet (optional)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)

  • Macbook pro cannot maintain extreme and express wireless signals while all PC's in vicinity can

I have a 2006 Macbook Pro whose Airport Utility cannot locate the Extreme and Express network in the house while every PC in the house is fine and can get the signal even in the basement.

This sounds like the internal antenna connector in the laptop has likely lost its connection, or the wireless card may be acting up. Suggest that you take the MacBook Pro to an Apple store to let them have a look.

  • HOW do I get my Extreme base station and Express to join a Linksys network?

OK... so I have FINALLY enabled my SLINGBOX to view remotely by totally removing my Airport Extreme & Express from the network look. I was told they are both routers and I have to pick one. The Linksys network works fine for all networking purposes... what it WON'T DO is connect my USB printer or stream iTunes to remote speakers. NOW, I have been told by using the Extreme & Express in "client mode" I can do this.
Basically HOW do I get my Extreme base station and Express to join the exsiting Linksys network?

Sorry but the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does NOT have a client mode.
The AirPort Express (AX) does have a client mode. The directions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Portal integration with OFA,OSA, Discoverer and Express

    Dear All,
Is it possible to integrate OFA,OSA, Discoverer and Express into portlet or is there any other mechanism to fulfill those requirements?

    David,
All the tools you mention can be integrated into Oracle9iAS Portal as portlets usind the Portal Development Kit. Check out the Oracle Portal Development Kit (PDK) forum for more information on how to do this.
The Discoverer team is working on some Discoverer portlets that should be available with Oracle9iAS Release 2 due later this year. I am not sure about OFA, OSA and Express.

  • Issues while building formulas and expressions

    Hi,
I have a couple of questions regarding the formulas and expressions in MDM. It would be a great help if someone could us on these:
<b>1</b>.While creating a Syndication map in MDM Syndicator, we need to do some calculation on some of the attributes/fields and need to store results in new Custom fields.  The problem is when we create a new Custom Item and use Formula to create a formula like <MM Number:mm number> * 12, it is showing us result in Destination Preview as 100*12 rather than computing the value as 1200. The same is the case is for UOM conversion where we want to convert inches into feet. Can we do such such asthmatic calculations in syndicator? Is there any other way to get the same result?
<b>2</b> Calculated Filed Expression Builder screen for any table field in Console has Attribute List option always disabled. Only the Fields list is available on this screen. The same is the case for Validation and Assignment builders in Data Manager. Is it possible to select Attributes as well while creating “Calculated field Expressions” (Console) Validation and Assignment Expressions (Data Manager)?
We are using MDM 5,5 SP4 Patch01 on Windows XP Professional.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    -Irfan

    Hi Irfan,
    1) If you want to use formula like 100*12 and want to get result than syndicator is not for this. This kind of formula should be used in Data manager. Custom field in syndicator is not for this purpose. When you want to add and custom field in your output file which is not present in your current display than with the help of Custom field, you can see that field in Destination Preview.

  • Trouble with Extreme N base station and Express station wireless

Upgraded extreme base station with new extreme "N" base station. Currently have the extreme "N" base station connected to cable modem on 2nd floor. I have wired the house to have the demarc on the 2nd floor. I purchased the express base station to be placed on 1st floor to extend the wireless range from the extreme "N" base station.
Prior to this setup, I had a wired bridge on the 1st floor to the main router on the 2nd floor. I was able to connect all wireless connections to the bridge where there was weak signal to the main router on 2nd floor.
The trouble I am having is that whether I have the express base connected or not. My signal is near the same as having only the main base station on 2nd floor. I can be seated right next to the express on the 1st floor and have only 1-2 bars on the signal.
I have updated and running the latest utilities for the airports. I have also been seeing the same trouble with other Mac's and PC's.
Also, I have been noticing the extreme "N" base station blinking amber when no Mac's or PC's are accessing the network or even when they are.
So, even when both the extreme and express have solid green LED, I still have the problem.
I am not sure if I am setting up this incorrectly or if I have hit a brickwall with this setup in my house.
Could I hard wire the express from the extreme from the second floor as I did with the bridge I use to have? I am not sure if the express would work as a wired bridge.
Just appears to be performing less then my prior PC networking products.
Thanks everyone...hope to get some insight. I have read all the prior discussions and still not getting good results.

    Tesserax....Thanks for the quick clarification on using the expresss as a wired bridge. I did avert back to a wired bridge now using all apple products. I was trying to get away with reusing the hard wire from the base station since I was running out of ports on the base station. {Apple has to be difficult with only having 3 ethernet ports.}
So I had to run a linksys switch off the extreme "N" base station.
    Thanks again..
Guess I have to live with the quirks...

  • Here's one for ya! Extreme and Express together...

    Hi,
I purchased an Extreme and Express today. (So far this is working much better than the D-Link and Linksys I tested.)
Ok, here's what I'd like to do.
Firstly, the DSL modem is connected to the Extreme.
    1) I have a Mac Pro 2.66 which is connected to the Extreme via Ethernet cable.
    2) The Express is in the living room.
    3) An iMac 2.4 which is in the study, is quite a distance from the Extreme, which is why I purchased the Express... to Bridge.
Ok everything works when the Extreme is set to 2.4 GHz, but when I set the Extreme to 5 GHz, I have service on the Mac Pro, but the iMac does not get any service. I imagine this has something to do with the Express... maybe not.
Does anyone know why I can't get any service on the iMac when the Extreme is set to 5GHz?
Your help would be truly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.
    -Dean

I would move the Express away from all that and if possible find an outlet where the Express will be by itself (a dedicated outlet just for the Express and nothing else around it.) Also make sure to plug the Express directly to the wall and not using a power extension (if you have a surge suppressor buy one of those in-wall or over the socket adapters, nothing with big long wires.)
