TLA APplication and NI VISA

Hi,
I am using LabVIEW 8.2 and NI MAX 4.1
I am using Tektronix TLA7016 with TLA Application 5.1 SP1. In NI MAX I added VISA TCP/IP resources with IP address of TLA. It detects Mainframe and all the modules of the TLA. But while I open TLA Application, TLA APplication does not reconise TLA modules! Does any body use this and found some solution for this? Could you please help me?

Hi Vishal,
I assume you are using TekVISA in addition to NI-VISA. Correct? If you delete the TCP/IP resource from MAX, are you then able to access your TLA modules using the TLA application? I notice you posted in this thread; Are you still having trouble even with just one vendor's VISA installed? Also, does the "switching" utility you mentioned get rid of this issue? Thanks!

I used to be able to build executable file for my application. However when I upgrade to LV8 and try to build executable file, I got the following message.

Possible reason(s):

The vi is perfectly executable in LV enviroment.

Unfortunately this is a known bug in LabVIEW 8.0.1. Our R&D department is well aware of the issue and is currently working on the problem. In the mean time there are some possible work arounds
Check the "Enable debugging"option in the "Advanced Category" of the application executable properties.
Disable the "Remove Panel" option for all SubVIs containing Shared Variables in the build
Try Unchecking the "Disconnect type definitions and remove unused polymorphic VI instances" options also in the Advanced category of the executable properties as shown in the attached figure.
Move shared variables to the top level VIs and pass the data through the SubVI connector
Downgrade to LabVIEW 8.0.

Third party installer and LabVIEW/VISA RT engines

I would like to use a third party installer (Q-Setup) for a stand-alone application I recently built using LabVIEW 7.1. The program was developed to run on Windows XP/2000/98 and requires serial communication with multiple devices. I realize LabVIEW and VISA RT Engines are required for this application, but am unsure if there will be issues with using a third party installer especially for builds across the different windows platforms (i.e., different RT engines for different platforms). The Application Builder provides options to 'silently' install the RT engines without problems, but I would really like to use a third-party installer. If anyone can provide some feedback about how best to include the RT engines using a third-party installer, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

There are not different run-time engines for different versions of windows. Both the LabVIEW run-time, VISA serial only run-time, and regular VISA run-time engines are .msi (Microsoft installer) files that are available on your LabVIEW CDs. If the third-party installer can handle .msi files, you should be okay. One thing to mention, though. You said the app is for XP/2000/98. LabVIEW 7.1 is not supported for Windows 98 and neither the 7.1 run-time or application will install on 98. The last version of LabVIEW to support 98 was version 7.0.

Windows 7 (64bit) and NI-Visa 5.2

Hello,
i am using Windows 7 64 bit and just installed TS/LV2012 and NI-Visa 5.2
Then i started MAX and want to add a new TCPIP-instrument but it says: "Either NI-VISA is not installed on this system or NI-VISA does not support creating new resources on this type of system".
So i ask me: Is Ni Visa 5.2 not compatible to Windows 7 64 bit? Because on the Website there is only "WIndows Vista" in the product description.

Additional Info: TS/LV is installed on a WIndow7 which is running in a VirtualBox-Image. Can this be also a problem?

the NI-VISA is compatible with Windows 7 x64.
You can get the Driver from here: NI-VISA 5.2
There's also Windows 7 64-bit listed under compatible operating systems.
That setup should work in a virtual machine like VirtualBox. You have to ensure that the Virtual machine allows to access the network adapter to forward PORTS/IP.
I would recommend you to reinstall the driver mentioned above to ensure that you got the right Version. After that you should check your VirtualBox configuration.

A Lightroom license can be activated on any two installs regardless of platform but the use of only one at at time is permitted.

Is there difference between NI VISA and HP VISA?

Now I am using Labview 5.1 to compile a program for an oscilloscope (HP 54110D), and the cable connecting the instrument with PC is GPIB/USB interface. I tried to run the driver downloaded from NI, but it didn�t work. The driver used GPIB as Instrument I/O in the driver. I decide to use Labview VISA to complete it. I know the oscilloscope supports HP VISA, not GPIB. The Agilent Company suggests using VISA. I am sure that the instrument support HP VISA. I don�t know whether HP instrument support NI VISA? Is there difference between two VISAs

As Gerd responded, you have a choice of APIs to communicate over GPIB when using LabVIEW - the built-in GPIB (NI-488.2) functions or the VISA functions. VISA is the recommended API for all instrument drivers. But if you have an existing instrument driver for your instrument, just use it, regardless of which API it uses internally.
Which VISA you want really depends on which GPIB controller you have. If the USB-GPIB controller is from NI, then you should have NI-488 and NI-VISA installed. If it is from Agilent, then you should install Agilent I/O Libraries (both SICL and VISA).
LabVIEW will communicate with either version of VISA because they both implement a standard API. That's the whole point. And it doesn't matter from a software per
spective whether the controller and instrument are from the same company.
Also, the fact that the GPIB controller is connected via USB rather than PCI, for example, is actually moot. LabVIEW doesn't know and doesn't care because the program isn't making USB calls, it's making GPIB or VISA calls. It's the lower-level GPIB driver that handles the necessary translations.
I hope this explains things sufficiently.

How do I open and close VIs from within a VI?

Ladies and gentlemen,
I would like to use a VI to open and close other VIs based on user input. Example: The first VI will have text that reads: "Does the car have heated mirrors?" There will be two buttons: one for "YES" and the other for "NO."
If the user hits the "NO" button, the current VI will close and a similar VI will open that asks the user the next question, "Are the mirrors lighted?" "YES" or "NO..."
If the user hits the "YES" button, the current VI will close and another will open that will tell the user to "Activate the heated mirrors" and press a button that will say "NEXT." At that point, that VI will close, and in two minutes another VI will open and ask the user "Is the driver's side mirror hot?" with another set of "Yes" or "No" buttons. If the user presses "YES" we will have verified that the heated driver's side mirror is working properly and store that information somewhere . If the user presses "NO", the VI will close and another VI will open with some kind of repair instruction and a button that says "RETEST" that will rerun the heated mirror test when repairs are completed.
During the two minutes we are waiting for the mirrors to heat up the program should move on to the next question: "Are the mirrors lighted?" "YES" or "NO..."
Does anyone know how to manipulate VIs in this way? Please help!

Instead of opening and closing vi's, just create one main vi with a state machine architecture. Search for examples on state machines to get a basic understanding of them. This is pretty complex so I have written an example of how this could be accomplished. The trick part was the 2 minute timer (my vi is set for 5 seconds for quick testing). Each state produces a question, and depending on the answer, the next state is inserted into a queue. You can add more states for more questions and answers. Notice that the boolean buttons can be hidden if you just want to show one button (like Next) instead of two buttons (Yes and No). Study the vi and let me know if you have questions.

Open and close visa inside a while loop

Hi,
I need to read a position from a control unit device continuously or even by click a button, for this I have to put "visa configure serial port" and" "visa close" inside a while loop. Dose it make any problem?

You shouldn't need the VISA Event nodes. Get rid of those.
Why are you using Concatinate String just to build up a constant. Just create a single string constant. It is a lot cleaner.
Is the antenna constantly sending data to you or only when you request it?

How do I find out and delete VIs that are NOT CALLED? I want to clean up my project.

Over the last few years, many VI's have accumulated that are no longer called from anywhere within my project. The project is a main GUI plus two other VIs launched by VI server plus many hundreds of VIs. I am not using source control. Any easy way to do this?

First BACK UP!
Yes create a Tree VI (a VI that contains the top-level VIs unsed in the app this includes the dynamcis).
Then crate source Distribution (in the project it is where you create buold-specs) and configure the Source Distribtion to presevere the hiarchy.
When you buld the Source Distribution it will pick-up every thing used by the tree and relink everythin in the new place with all of the dead code missing.
You may have to repeat the process after testing since there is always another dynamic VI somewher that gets missed.
After you are satified THEN delte to old stuff, DONE!

!!!---What's wrong to my T61 order and my VISA card?

I had used my VISA card to order a T61 notebook from US LENOVO website on 3rd March,2008. It costs me $828.75.
But I found that someone charged me $828.75 again on 4th March, 2008. Then I called the VISA center to enquire about it, they told me that LENOVO charged me two times, one is on 3rd March(this is my order), and the other is on 4th March(who did it?).
Why? What's wrong? I ordered only one T61, how can LENOVO charge me two times?
And I promise that I had never give me VISA card information to anybody else, nobody can use it except myself, so it's the mistake of LENOVO.
I had sent a E-mail to lenove in US, but no reply.
Who can tell me why and give a answer? How can I get my money back?

Application Builder and Corrupt VIs

Howdy All,
I'm developing a Medium-sized application in LabVIEW 7.0 used for instrument control. This application has grown over-time, and currently contains approximately 400 VIs. The basic structure of hte appliation is one main VI that has an instrument status display on the bottom, and a sub-panel on the top, into which all dialogs are loaded for user interaction. Each major task has it's own VI that is loaded into the subpanel as appropriate.
I've read a few stories on the developer exchange about VIs becoming corrupt. I thought these were freak occurences, because by and large, it appears that LabVIEW is fairly stable. However last week I had a VERY scary experience.
I was demonstrating to a collegue the properties of an XY graph control. We changed the colour of one of the plots, then hit cancel. LabVIEW complained of an internal error involving undo.cpp and proceeded to crash. I figured the crash was caused by some strange sequence of events, didn't think much of it, and reloaded my application. After making some changes, I went to the Application Builder to build the application. However the application Builder was complaining about a "missing board" in the DEFAULT build file. I knew immediately that something was VERY wrong. (When I say default build script, I'm referring the default script that is loaded when you press the "Build application or shared library..." button in the tools menu).
(As a side note, does anyone know why the LabVIEW application builder gives such terrible error messages? I always get that "missing board" error when either: one of my support files cannot be found, or one of my dynamic VIs is not executable. Since the error doesn't pinpoint a file, I neeed to go through the files one by one - which is a pain because I have a lot. Another question, why does the application builder ALWAYs ask if you want to save changes to build script, even if you haven't made any changes?)
After loading my build script for the application (which I've used HUNDREDS of times), I got the "missing board" error. I didn't think there was a problem with any of my paths or VIs, but I went throgh each included support file and dynamic VI in the build script to make sure it was there. Though there seemed to be no problems with any of the files, LabVIEW continued to complain.
I figured the problem was specific to the computer I was working on, so I copied the source to another development machine to complete the build. I was VERY scared to find that I got the SAME error on the DEFAULT build script! Also, my actual build script refused to load properly.
This was late at the end of a long day, so I decided to turn of my machines and go home. The next morning, everything worked fine - I was able to build the application, and I haven't had a problem since. (Maybe it was a bad dream, but I have clumps of hair on my desk from the night before...)
I found this experience to be UTTERLY TERRIFYING. Once I had to revert to an archived copy of one of my main VIs, because the current version refused to open, claiming it was corrupt. Since I don't know what's going on behind the scenes in LabVIEW, I'm afraid that tiny internal LabVIEW errors might be adding up. I back-up the source very regularily, since it is such a large project, however I have *real* way of inspecting the integrity of the source.
Does anyone know (A) why this might have happened - especially when the problem reproduced itself on multiple machines (B) has anyone had similar experience with internal LabVIEW errors or corrupt source (C) what sort of internal errors might be piling up that might cause a VI to claim it is "corrupt".

For the undo.cpp error, I got a couple different line numbers but didn't write them down. If I get them again, I'll be sure to get the specifics for you.
As for the "missing board", I also got that description a little wrong - the error I'm talking about is:
"Error 7 occured at Inovke Node in Dist read linkages.vi->Dist Cmp Settings to Disk Hier.vi->Build Application.vi
Possible reason(s):
LabVIEW: File not found. The file might have been moved or deleted, or the file path might be incorrectly formatted for hte operating system. For example, use \ as path separators on Windows, : on Mac OS, and / on Unix.

As you can see, I meant "non-existent board". This error is very easy to reproduce - m
ake a build script and include some extra files. Save and close the build script. Move or rename some of the extra files included in the build. Reload the script. You should get that not very helpful error.
Now that I think about it though, maybe that NI-488 error refers to GPIB control, which I think I have installed, but don't have a GPIB card installed... hmmm... no reason that error should be popping up *there* though...
I could have *sworn* I would also get that error when one of the dynamic VIs in the build is not executable, but I can't seem to reproduce that right now.
Tying back to the original thread - what makes a VI corrupt? I imagine if you cracked the binary file open yourself and messed around with some bits you would probably make the VI corrupt, but I'm assuming that editing a VI normally (ie through LabVIEW) should NOT cause the VIs to become corrupted. Any information on VIs becoming corrupt? Is it somehow related to the undo.cpp errors?(when trying t
o undo some last change that wasn't recorded properly, the VI is modified improperly - after you save and close, it won't reopen?)

Handling User Events in sub panel vis and main vis with same Event reference Number.

Hi All, Iam trying to work to handle events in both subpanel vi and main vi.
I have a main program, and 2 sub vi. I will load the sub VI in 2 sub panels in main vi. Each sub pael vi has controls on it.
I have created 2 User events for 2 sub panels vi. One user event consits of a Cluster with 2 Booleans (x & Y) and Other User Event consists of cluster of 2 unsigned 8 Numbers (a & b). These are created and registered in the main Vi and event register refnum is passed to the subpanel vi from the main panel vi.
I have Event structure in main panel and sub panel vis.
In one sub panel vi, When the value of one boolean(i.e. X) in the clusters changes, the Events structure in sub panel vi should perform some operation in sub panel vi only. When the value of other boolean (i.e. Y) changes it should perform some operation in main vi. I will try to Generate user event with the x value and Y value changed based on the control clicks in the sub panel vi.
The OTher panel vi should behave in the smae way when the a & b value changes.
The "Generate User Event" is working fine some times and sometimes there in no event triggered in the sub panel vi or main vi.
Please let me know what is the problem Ramesh.

There is a lot of talking, but not much understanding. It'd be better if you posted some example VI's of what you are trying to do so that the words will make sense.
One thing I can tell you is that you don't want to have two event structures handle the same event reference number. You want to have two event registrations with each one going to its own event structure.

Confused over Activation Date and Engineer Visit D...

Placed an order for the full lot, phone, internet, TV. This is for a new development, with "BT lines pre-installed" (but not activated).
I will recieve the equipment tommorow and the (estimated) activated is also tommorow, however I have just come to realised the scheduled engineer visit is not tommorow but the day after (Monday), this was moved/changed without notifying me.
I gave BT a call, the kind gentleman on the phone suggested to me because it is a new development, chances of work needing to be carried out inside or anywhere within my property is extremely slim, maybe just to test. I agree here as it seems my neighbours all have working phone lines very quick with minimal hassle.
For fun, I decided to give my own phone number a ring. It connects fine, but because there's no dial tone my phone didn't ring on the line; I assume the activation hasn't been carried out yet.
So my query here is the activation carried out elsewhere or by another team, while the engineer just comes and checks if everything is ok? Best case scenario is that I recieve my equipment tommorow, mainly the phone/router and my phone and internet works when I whack it in, I could care less for the TV right now.
Just to reiterate this is a new development/block of flats and the developers have done everything to make it as easy as possible, as initially they said "just give BT a call and they will activate it for you". I haven't questioned my neighbours yet on how they got their's so fast yet as due to my awkward working hours I can't easily get hold of them without disturbance.

The activation is usually done automatically (may take upto midnight on the day of activation) and then the engineer who will run tests on the line to check that it is stable will make sure it is in running order.
