TM back up occasionally fails
Every so often TM reports that 'back up failed'. If I then manually enter TM to back up it's fine. Any ideas as to why this happens?
Thx
There is a rile in that folder named com.apple.timemachine.supported that is reported as an empty file. If you did not see it listed, then it may be invisible. You can make invisible files visible by doing the following:
Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Once you have toggled the Finder to show invisible files look in the folder for the above file. Drag it to the Trash. Turn off the display of invisible files.
Now start a TM backup. See if this fixes the problem.

PC crashed and now using a different PC. How do I get my iTunes library back from the failed PC on the PC being used now?
Extract the hard drive from the faulty computer and recover the library from it or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. (At least one link in there may be useful even if you don't have such a device.)

Dear helper,
I have updated all my devices to Lion and iOS 5. I was able to move from MobileMe to iCloud. Due to the move iCal showed double calanders, so I removed all the calendars to start fresh again with the back-up I made before. Unfortunately restoring the back-up keeps failing. I've tried it on my iMac as well as on my MacBook Pro. What happends is that after I click "Restore" I can see all the calendars in iCal again, but after a few seconds they disappear. Does anyone know how I can solve this?
Best regards,
edjasHi mate, could you please tell me how you resolved this issue? I'm having the same problem.

Systemd-logind occasionally fails to start
Hi,
I am running Arch with Cinnamon started by mdm-display-manager. I had this running for quite some time without an issue.
Recently an issue popped out - OCCASIONALLY systemd-logind fails to start and I get stuck on boot screen. This happens maybe once in 5-10 boots. I have to do hard reset afterwards. CTL+ALT+DEL won't work, I can not switch to other console and I have no network to SSH to that machine.
Other than that, system starts just fine.
I am not sure, how to debug this further and would appreciate advice.

I have exactly the same problem. systemd-logind sporadically fails to start, therefore preventing the login prompt to appear. Resetting the machine is the only solution in that case. Most of the time, the system start works without problems though. Here are a few relevant lines from my logs:
# journalctl --unit=systemd-logind | grep -C50 'Connection timed out'
-- Reboot --

It almost seems to be a problem with a dbus and/or NetworkManager race condition. -
Time Machine miscalculates the amount of data to be backed up, and fails.
Hi.
Situation: After many successful backups, Time Machine spontaneously states that it requires tens of GB more space on the backup volume than the size of the data to be backed up. Total required space exceeds physical size of backup volume, despite the fact that the partially filled source volume is the same physical size as the Time Machine volume.
*Attempted solutions*: Disk Utility check of both hard drives, re-formatting of Time Machine volume (GUID partition map, HFS+).
Hardware:
Name : TM volume
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
Media Name : Seagate FreeAgentDesktop Media
Location : External
Total Capacity : 298.1 GB (320,072,933,376 Bytes)
Name : Source Volume
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
Media Name : Hitachi HTS543232L9A300 Media
Location : Internal
Total Capacity : 298.1 GB (320,072,933,376 Bytes)
S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
Background: After a long spell of no backups, and many new items on the source volume, I formatted the TM volume. I then elected to exclude "System files and applications". The process of calculating the size of the excluded files never completed, even after hours of calculation. I cancelled this option, and selected the directories to exclude manually. I initiated a backup.
This setup worked for a few weeks. A day or two ago, I was told that TM did not have enough space on the backup volume. This was strange, since the size to be backed up reported in the "Options" panel was less than the total size of the TM volume by a large margin.
I formatted the external TM drive again, selected the drive, and initiated a backup.
TM failed, stating that it required 319.0 GB for the backup, but that 297.6 were available on the backup volume. However, there are about 295 GB of used data on the source volume, and the Options panel showed that an amount several tens of GB less than this was to be backed up (about 265.9 GB).

Feb 1 15:51:24 koishi /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[7388]: Backup failed with error: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.
I then opened the Options panel, cleared my manually added files, selected the automatic option of "System Files and Applications", and predictably, it did nothing for a long time.
The console said:

So I hit cancel to return to the manually selected files list, had another go at backing up, and it failed.
Any ideas?
d.It has failed. It says it requires 318 GB of space, which is ludicrous.

Macbook occasionally fails to wake from sleep
i have a new macbook (purchsed in july) which occasionally (every 1-2 weeks) fails to wake from sleep. it either hangs on the blue screen which first comes up when you switch it on, or on the black screen which normally follows shortly afterwards.
i regularly use it "closed", i.e., with an external screen and keyboard, but the problem seems also to happen occasionally when i switch it on without these peripherals.
any ideas?
i've also had dvd player crash once. it was in full screen mode, and i couldn't switch to any other applications or force quit dvd player, so again i had to cut power.
Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)Having similar issues...not that it happens everyday ...it's very infrequent..but yeah im in the same boat..
As far as the computer being hot...
Go to :
System Preference--->Energy Savings
From there you should have the boxed check both on Battery power and AC Cord to put the Hard drive to sleep when possible..
Once i did this it never happened again(the closing of the lid and still running)
as far as the other issue??Help.!!Anyone? -
Backing up from failed Time Machine Disk
Recently my time machine drive decided to fail at the same time that I had just wiped my computer and reinstalled OSX. Bummer, huh? I had a lot of important stuff on there. Well, I was able to recover what was on there to another hard drive using a disk recovery tool in Windows (R-Studio). I recovered every file (even the few hidden directories that were on there) to the other hard drive, repartitioned my time machine to HFS Journaled and dumped all of the data back on to it. I even labeled it the same as it was before, so technically it should be the same hard drive right?
Wrong, OSX still doesn't recognize it as a time machine backup when I try to restore from it. I really don't want to have to go through all those 30,000 hidden directories by hand and copy my MP3 collection, photo album, and who knows what else back to the hard drive. Does anyone know how to trick OSx into recognizing this backup as a valid Time Machine Backup? Perhaps it's just one or 2 files in the root directory I am missing.
Thanks so much,
--BenI seriously doubt that you can do that. I've never heard of anyone doing something like this. I also strongly suspect that that windows software didn't preserve all the resource fork, ownership and hard links correctly.
You are left with manual migration of your data back to your computer. this isn't as hard as you make it sound. You just need to copy you own stuff back. also use the following [post|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] to migrate important parts of you user library, Mail, iphoto etc. You will have to reinstall your applications by hand. -
Can Time Machine back up a failed hard drive, and how long will it take to prepare?
1. The hard drive in my 2009 MBP has failed. My Time Machine external drive failed about three weeks ago, and I don't know if I'll be able to restore from it. Is it ever possible to backup a failed hard drive with Time Machine? The machine boots, it just comes up beach balls if I use any applications for very long.
2. I'm trying to back it up right now. I have Time Machine running to a new external drive. It has been stuck on "preparing backup" for about 20 minutes. Everyone says that preparing a first backup takes some time, but no one says if "some time" is 15 minutes or one hour or more. What is a typical length of time for preparing first backup? At what point should I walk away?
If it's not worth trying to back this drive up myself anymore, I'd love to just drop the thing off and get the hard drive replaced -- but if it's worth doing, I'll take the extra day to back up what I can.You might have better luck using a clone.

Time Machine - suddenly back up's fail...
Hello,
I have been using an external hard drive as my time machine for years, then suddenly the back ups started to fail.
So I went in to Time Machine settings and found that the reported size of the next back up was greater than space that existed on the drive, then I noticed something odd, my Imac has an internal HD of 250GB of which 94GB is used.
However the next back up had a reported size of 490GB!
All my external drives (one for iTunes, one for video content) are excluded, and yet the estimated size of the back up is 490GB from a 250GB drive...
So, I erased the drive, so now it's empty and ready to take a back up, but with such a huge estimated size it will not fit...
Any ideas why suddenly Time Machine thinks there is 490GB to back up from a 250 GB system drive with only 94GB used?Gilesm,
I'm going to refer you to the Time Machine FAQ's and Time Machine Trouble Shooting areas. Because TM is part of OS X that is where you will find the correct forums. How you get there is click Discussions in the upper left of this screen, choose the version of OS X you are using (I believe you are on 10.5.x Leopard) and you should see the Time Machine forum area.

Why does my alarm occasionally fail to vibrate and make sound?
I use my alarm on my iPhone 5 every day to wake up. I would say that 99.9% of the time it works.
Maybe once every few months, however, the alarm fails to go off. The phone will show the appropriately display (I use snooze, so the snooze button is ready to be pressed). When I last experienced this problem I shut the phone off and turned it back on, and the alarm triggered (noise and vibration) as soon as the phone turned on.
This isn't a case of me hitting snooze or disabling the alarm by mistake. It's not a case of a 3rd party app trying to do something with the alarm. It's not a case of using an outdated OS because I'm currently on the latest (and this has happened on other OS versions, anyway, and happened on my 3GS a few times, too). Even though it doesn't matter (because I have kept it on the same settings since I bought the phone when it came out), my phone is always on silent. So that isn't the culprit either, because alarm works just fine on silent.
This is a major problem even though it is rare. I use this phone to wake up for work. If you google it you'll see others experience the same problem (but I couldn't find a solution).
-Do others experience this problem on here?
-Has Apple said anything about it or at least acknowledged it is an issue?
-How do I get Apple to acknowledge my concerns?
If this keeps happen, even infrequently, my next phone is an Android.Exactly the same problem.
Been late from work several times because the alarm goes silent.
Then when you wake up and check it, there's no ringtones, no alarms, no alerts, no message sounds, nothing from the apps, no keyboard sounds, absolutely nothing coming out of the speaker.
Yes, the mute switch is off. Yes, the volume is on. No, there's no dirt or dust in the headphone plug. I have never once even used the Do not disturb function.
Only rebooting helps.
This happens every once in a while for no apparent reason.
The thing that really disturbs me that this is my THIRD (3rd) iPhone in a row that has the same problem. Since that's the case, I've been very hard trying to figure out - and hoping - that the problem is something that I keep doing. I just don't know what it is.
Been using Nightstand app. Removed it now completely. That probably won't help either.
Had my previous iPhone5 changed to a new one exactly 10 days ago for this very reason, and here we go again - the same bug is here. Not funny.
I have been reading discussion boards a lot and it seems that this is a fairly common problem. However, nobody has come up with a solution.
If someone figures that out, he/she's gonna make a lot of customers happy. -
Bug (reported to Apple) - Slide to unlock occasionally fails!
Hello folks,
Below is a copy of my bug report, I just missed an urgent call (with no call back number)... so I was prompted to finally report this problem!
Has anyone experienced this (I noticed some similar reports but none that exactly match my description).
NOTE: Please do not suggest that I turn off the "Slide to unlock" feature. I need to engage it, otherwise I will lose access to my corporate email.
Report----------------
Phone: iPhone 4
iOS: 4.3 (8F190)
I am experiencing a problem with the Slide to Unlock feature.
It is an inconsistent problem which is hard to repeat intentionally. However, it seems to occur randomly, about every 1 in 15 calls.
I believe the conditions related to the problem are as follows:
- Phone enters Auto-Lock mode (5 minutes)
Password Lock is engaged
- Screen off (phone not in use for more than 5 minutes)
Problem description:
When I receive phone call, I attempt to slide the "Slide to unlock" slider to the right. The slider does move to the right as intended, however, it has no affect on displaying the keypad.
The expected result should be the numeric keypad so that I can enter my keycode. As previously mention, these actions to answer a call do work more than 90% of time.
Additionally, pressing the Home button or the power button also has no affect while the phone is still ringing.
Only after the ringing has stopped do I regain control of the phone.
Note: This is not a new problem with iOS: 4.3 (8F190), rather, this did begin with the last iOS version.Mine did it too, I would swipe the slide to unlock and the first attempt
failed usually 50% of time. I've since reactivated my old Nokia N95 until
we see what the next gen iPhone holds for us. My iPhone 4 was nothing
but trouble.
Despite this problem (which occurs rarely) and a few other idiosyncrasies, I can't agree with your statement. Since upgrading from the Android platform, the iPhone 4 is (by far) the very best phone I have ever owned!
It is hard to feel sorry for all those Android 'suckers' out there still complaining and hating their service providers for not releasing the latest aOS fixes. Complaining about bugs that will likely never get fixed...that is unless they upgrade to new Android hardware. Android... NEVER AGAIN!
BTW, I am no fanboy... I am just pleased with the iPhone user experience! -
It seems everytime I fix a problem with my back ups something else breaks, and this one I don't know how to fix.
Can someone please check out this error and help me resolving the problem.

K9VGM - network adapter occasionally failing
Hi friends,
I have a new computer based on a K9VGM board. Everything is running fine until after some random number of hours - between 6 - 80 hours, when the network adapter (on the motherboard) suddenly fails. It may have to do with the network load, but it doesn't seem to be related to the temperature in the room.
When it fails, everything else on the machine is running fine, except for the network adapter. I can't control it all from inside windows, any "disable" or "repair" on the network connection or network adapter fails, and the window just sits there. It seems like the OS can't communicate with this piece of hardware at all. After a reboot the computer runs fine again, until it happens the next time.
This is actually my second K9VGM motherboard in this machine - I returned the first one to the reseller, with this error. They supposedly tested it, and confirmed the problem, and sent me a new one - which has the same problem...
All drivers and updates should be applied, according to the MSI live update tool.
Any tips on ho wto proceed? I am not so keen on sending it back again, to receive another MB with the same issue. I am tempted to just buy a cheap NIC PCI card and put in the box...I have held off on doing anything on this - and now the machine has actually been running without any network problems for more than a week - so maybe it was just the previous board that was faulty, and the new one had a temporary hiccup (not reoccuring problems).
