TM backup drive connected to Extreme - ethernet or usb?

I have an airport extreme (latest gen) connected to a synology external HDD thru an ethernet cable for TM backup but I've seen posts saying external  HDD should be only connected via the USB. Why can't i use the ethernet? it seems to be working to be a  TM backup ok?
I want to connect another HDD to my imac and am thinking of using another one of the ethernet ports in the airport extreme. Will that be ok?

but I've seen posts saying external  HDD should be only connected via the USB.
These posts would not be correct, then.
Why can't i use the ethernet?
You can.

is there a way to use time machine with a backup drive connected to my AirPort Extreme?

Unfortunately, this is not officially supported by Apple......if you still have the 4th Gen AirPort Extreme that you list in your equipment profile.
However, the new "tower" shaped version of the AirPort Extreme does now officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the device.

  • NAS Backup Drive connected to Router

I have been using a WRT54G router to connect my 2 desktops together in a network in addition to the internet. I have been reading that there is a backup drive that can be connected directly to the router, which can then be accessed by both computers without the other being on.
I was wondering if anyone can suggest a NAS drive to connect via ethernet to my WRT54G router that I can use for backups and sharing data with both computers along with backup software? I have found a number of them, however I wasn't sure if they worked with the Linksys router or not. I am looking for a 500gb to possibly 1tb if not too expensive.

I think there is no problem connecting a NAS to WRT54G router. It will work.
You can try NSLU2 or NAS200.

  • Library on external drive connected to Extreme router

My question is about using an external drive as the library and connecting it directly to the USB port on my Apple Extreme Base Station. The drive (LaCie 500GB) does nto show up and I don't seem to be able to connect to it. Any suggestions? And if I can be configured to be viewed, can Apple TV play movies frm the drive while connected directly to the router?

Firstly there is some doubt that the content will take the routes you suggest, clearly when used as an external disk, the path will be:
    Ext Disk > Mac > Airport > tv
but there are many that believe the path from the airdisk will be:
    Airdisk > Airport > Mac > Airport > tv and not Airdisk > Airport > tv
I have my doubts about this but it actually doesn't make too much difference for comparative purposes.
Secondly, I actually doubt there is an enormous difference between the data transfer rates to the tv from an airdisk on one hand and an ext disk on the other, since the whole transfer issue is likely limited by the speed at which the tv can handle the data anyway, although both are theoretically capable of meeting the 5 Mbps specification for sustained video playback on the tv. However out of the two systems my money would be on the ext disk every time.
Finally the point I was really making was that putting content onto an ext disk would be significantly quicker than putting the same content on an airdisk. To put this into numbers take a 1 hour movie encoded at 5 Mbps. I would expect you to be able to transfer this from your mac to an airdisk in around 20 minutes, I would expect it to take around 1 minute on an ext drive.

  • WIFI backup drive connected to express

I have a USB Seagate free agent backup drive. Can I connect it to my Airport? I understand it isnt supported. Is there firmware to make this drive able to run on the express?

Why doesn't apple do an update to support a drive?

  • External backup drive connected to airport router giving  "... backup disk image ... /.../... is already in use" error.

I just added an external backup drive to my airport router for my desktop and my laptop to use.  Initial backups worked, but now I'm getting "... backup disk image ... /.../...MacBook Pro.sparcsbundle is already in use."  This message is on laptop even after stopping timemachine on the desktop.  The initial backup worked for both machines.  Is this a timing problem?  It shows the last backup happened earlier this evening, but I'm concerned about the major amount of work I did after that time.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

You can't use that configuration for Time Machine backups, if that's what you're doing.

  • Can I connect TC with ethernet to USB cable?

Can TC work as HD only by connecting to my Imac with ethernet to USB cable?

Please confirm that you have at least two good ethernet cables, which will be needed for the installation.
I understand that you do not need for the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network, and it will only function as a hard drive, correct?
The step by step that we provide will allow you to backup to the Time Capsule using the current modem/router that you have now and also backup using ethernet if you connect the computer directly to the Time Capsule.
This is what you want, correct?

  • Airport Extreme + ethernet printer + USB HDD...answers?

I've seen a handful of posts about this from late last year when Apple screwed the **** out of all of us with that garbage firmware "update" that destroyed all the previous reliability and added nothing. I haven't any clue where to find an old version of the firmware to get me working again, and I haven't seen anyone actually get an answer to this question, so I figure I'll keep reposting it and calling to hassle Apple until I alone am annoying enough to effect change. :-D
I have an Airport Extreme with an HP LaserJet connected to an ethernet port, and a 2TB drive connected via USB. On my Windows PC with all the Airport drivers in it, everything works fine all the time. Every time I turn the computer on, the harddrive is available in my computer and the printer can be printed to at any time.
If I close my laptop, turn it off, restart it, etc it will lose the connection to the harddrive and the printer when I wake it up, turn it on, etc. The icon for the harddrive is gone, and I have to "Restart" the router to get it to find it again, at which point it shows up on the desktop again. To find the printer I have to restart the printer then "Restart" the router, at which point I do not have to reinstall the printer...it just starts printing all the queued up stuff.
If I leave the computer sitting for 10-14min to where the external harddrive spins down from lack of activity and open iTunes without going into finder to get the harddrive spinning again it will default iTunes to looking in my Music folder and mark all of my music as missing. At this point I have to shut down iTunes, get the harddrive going again, open iTunes, change the setting for the music location, then "Consolidate Library" (which takes about 2 hours because i have around 450GB in there in 30k songs). This is really ******* me off because my Apple used to work as well as my PC.
Apple, aren't you embarrassed by this pathetic display of ineptitude? Why are you content with being mediocre and ignoring the people flocking from Vista to get reliability only to find the same or worse problems with OSX? Now is the time to grab as many people as possible, sick of Microsoft and fed up with Vista. You have to impress them or you'll keep your 5% market share forever. If we're going to have frustrating problems, why wouldn't we have frustrating problems in an OS with software support?
Anyone have a working firmware they can put on my iDisk for me? Or a solution to this nightmare? It's been going on since like November, and I'm getting tired of waiting for 7.3 firmware while making excuses to myself about why I'm playing this ridiculous restarting games with the most expensive computer hardware available for the speed and features.
    Thanks much!
    Alex

Nevermind about the firmware. I discovered by accident that holding option while clicking the check for updates menu lets you download 7.1.1, but then it won't let me friggin install it!!! AHHHH. Screwed again! Apple, how long are you going to seriously sit with your thumbs up your while all these sites and all these customers complain and make fun of you before you do something to make this thing work!
Anyone have a hacked 7.1.1 that will go on my router? :-/

  • Renaming Drives Connected to Time Capsule by USB

I have two external drives connected to my Time Capsule via a USB hub. How can I change the name on these drives? I can change the name of the data drive on the time capsule through Airport Utility but not the drives connected via USB.

Plug them into a computer and change it via disk utility.

  • Trouble seeing hard drive connected to Extreme; Win7; NetBIOS (53) error

I posted the gist of this as a reply to someone else's question (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11240882#11240882) and got no response, so just you have the answer but missed it, I'm re-posting.
When I try to access a hard drive plugged into my Extreme from my Win7 machine, I get an error something like "Unable to access drive. Make sure that NetBIOS is activated (53)."
First, although prior discussion indicates this is likely not just because NetBIOS is not activated, I suppose I should make sure it is; how do I do that?
Second, a previous responder recommended renaming the Extreme and the share disks to not have any spaces in the names. I did that for the Extreme (it didn't work). But I'm not sure where to do that for the drive; in Airport Utility, I don't see an option to name the drive. If I plug the drive straight into my computer, the name comes up without spaces. Have I taken care of this, or am I missing something?
Third, the only opportunity Win7 gives me to try to access the drive is when I reboot the computer; then a window pops up saying, "A network drive FnuLnu's_AirportExtreme has become available," and asks for the password (and then gives the above error message). If I cancel out, I can't figure out how to again try to access the drive without rebooting. How do I do this?
    Thanks much.

No, an Airport Extreme doesn't look like that.
didn't say it would look like that, i said it works the same
i just fired up my extreme and, lo and behold, @ least to my eye it looks (and certainly works) the same
Double-click the Airport there, and you'll get another Finder winow, showing +Connected as+ at the top of the center portion, and a list of the volume(s) on the AirDisk(s).
yep, not unlike the TC ...

  • Not starting when Backup Drive connected

My iMac wont start if our Verbatim external hard-drive which we use for Time Machine is connected. Once on, I can connect the drive Time Machine seems to back up perfectly. If the drive is in on startup, I am faced with a grey screen without a loading wheel. I can get around this problem by simply unplugging the drive, but this is a hassle and I am constantly forgetting to reinsert the drive to back into the mac.
Does anyone know what the problem is and how I might be able to fix it?
Thanks very much for all your help,
    SM

Go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select Macintosh HD as your startup partition

  • External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware

External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware on Extreme as well as both of my Airport Expresses. Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

  • Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a HomeHub router?

Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a BT HomeHub router? Is there a better way to back up and store files than via the USB port on my new MacBook Pro? I'd like storage to be accessible from my earlier version MacBook too.

I think you want to make backups without connecting a hard disk via USB. In other words, you want to have the data storage be shared in your home wirelessly.
If this is the case, I recommend using a Time Capsule.
Time Capsule works great with Time Machine. You can set up all your devices to automatically make backups on the Time Capsule wirelessly and effortlessly.

  • Can I extend time capsule by adding external drive connected TC via USB?

    Hi,
I use my TC drive for backups, i's now full. Can I extend time capsule backup drive by adding external drive connected TC via USB? If yes, how do I his? I have 1TB WD external drive connected via the TC's USB, I can see the WD drive in the finder and the TC set-up...but I don't know where to go from here...
    Thanks for your help
    Steveru

    Welcome to the discussions, Steveru!
I think what you are asking is can you simply continue Time Machine backups by adding the new USB drive, correct? The answer is not exactly. See below for details.
To use the new USB drive for Time Machine backups, you'll need to Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock and open Time Machine. Click on Select Disk and click your USB drive to highlight it, then click Use for Backup. Here's the rub....Time Machine will make a new full complete backup of everything on your Mac's hard drive. There's no way to avoid this. After that, it will continue to make scheduled incremental backups just like it did before on the Time Capsule.
If you ever need to go back to your original backups on the Time Capsule, you'll need to right-click the Time Capsule icon on the dock and choose Browse Other Time Machine Disks.
When the USB drive start to fill, you may decide that you no longer need all the old backups on the Time Capsule disk since you should have a good history of backups on the USB drive at that point.
So, you could erase the Time Capsule disk and then start backing up to the Time Capsule disk again. At that time, it will also make a complete backup on the first pass and then normal incremental backups from that point forward. When the TC begins to fill again, then you could erase the older backups on the USB drive and start backups again on that drive. Then switch to the other drive in the future to keep things going indefinitely. If you go with this type of flip flop plan, you should always have a solid history of many months of backups at any given time.
Will a plan like this work? I don't answer a question on the forum unless I've done it myself. This has been working well for me for almost 3 years.
Pondini, the resident expert on Time Machine and Time Capsule affairs, may have some comments on this as well. If you haven't already seen his excellent guide, Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule or +Time Machine FAQ+, these are the best available sources of information on this subject on the Internet.
Or, if you don't want to erase any your backups, you could of course keep adding a new USB drive when the current drive is about to fill.

  • Time Capsule Hangs with USB Drive Connected after installing 10.5.6 update

The 10.5.6 update basically made my External USB Disk connected to the Time Capsule unusable. I've repaired the permissions as suggested in other posts - this did not fix the problem.
I was unable to perform any incremental backups initially after the 10.5.6 update, so I archived my sparsebundle and created a new one by doing a full fresh backup - which completed successfully. However, after the backup, I was unable to connect to the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to the Time Capsule via Finder - when trying to connect, my computer hangs and I'm forced to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND the Time Capsule, if I just restart one or the other the problem persists. If I let the connection attempt run long enough I get an "Error Code: -8072" message and still have to do a hard restart. After the hard restart of my computer and Time Capsule I'm able to connect to the Time Capsule and the USB drive connected to Time Capsule just fine. However, once the Time Machine backup runs again - the same problem returns, I can no longer access the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to Time Capsule via Finder and have to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND Time Capsule. This 10.5.6 update has been havoc, anyone have the same troubles or ideas for resolving this? Before updating to 10.5.6 my system was working flawlessly with Time Capsule and the connected USB drive.
UPDATE: I've just verified that this problem only occurs with my external LaCie Hard Drive connected to Time Capsule via USB. If I disconnect my LaCie Hard Drive from the Time Capsule and restart the Time Capsule everything works fine (backups, access to Time Capsule Disk from Finder). If I connect the LaCie Hard Drive via USB to the Time Capsule, I am able to access the LaCie Hard Drive in Finder UNTIL the next Time Machine backup. After the first Time Machine backup with the USB drive connected, I can no longer access the USB drive from Finder - Finder hangs and eventually produces "Error Code: -8072". If I disconnect the USB drive, then plug it back in - Finder no longer hangs and I can access the drive connected to Time Capsule until the next backup occurs.
Anybody have ANY ideas? This worked fine before the 10.5.6 update!

I am having a similar problem. Never tried it before installing 10.5.6, but have a Time Capsule (500GB) with a 1TB WD MyBook Essential Edition connected via USB. Hardware is password protected by authorized users of network and needs separate login to access. When I initially set it up, it worked fine (though too difficult to set up). The WD storage drive showed up in Finder window as a subset of the Time Capsule after clicking on the Time Capsule icon. I had an "-8072" error message yesterday that I ignored, but then the file contents of the WD storage drive took forever to be viewed in Finder (though video files could be accessed wirelessly). Today started having a problem... coincidentally?... after a Time Machine backup, and got the message: "The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -8072)." Now I am unable to get into the WD drive when I click on "Connect As" on the Time Capsule icon in the Finder menu... I just get the -8072 error. I no longer even see the Time Capsule disk as a subset of the Time Capsule icon in the Finder Toolbar.
    What is going on???
