TM backup to Time Capsule crashes my iMac

When Time Machine starts to backup to my Time Capsule it starts to calculate how many files are on my iMac (10.6.5) and then at some point it causes a panic kernel failure. When I hook an external had drive via USB port TM works successfully. The following is information found in Console.
Any suggestions on what is causing the problem is appreciated.

You have (or had) an app named IDrive, some sort of backup tool. That's what's causing most of the trouble. Apparently it was not installed completely, or not removed completely.
Contact the maker for removal instructions.
It's hard to tell whether there's also a problem with Time Machine or your Time Capsule's internal HD, but that seems doubtful. Post back if the problem continues after you solve the IDrive mess.

  • How can i exclude my macbook backup on time capsule from other imac connected to same time capsule?

we have several mac connected to same time capsule, how can i exclude one macbook backup from all the others mac accessing same time capsule?
    thanks

Not exactly clear what you mean.. the TC will keep each Mac backup in its own sparsebundle.. it does this automagically.. The backups are not mixed.. all are kept separate.
Or is this a security question.. you don't want people looking at the contents of the backup?
You can increase the security of the TC.. but it is too late.. you should have done it when first installed. If you go to the setup you can change security (Secure Shared Disks) by selecting with Accounts.. the problem is you will lose access to all the existing backups. You really need to do a clean start.. create accounts for all the users and start again.
Also note security is not a big feature here.. anybody with physical access to the TC can press the reset for 1sec and get access. It is a home device not a business device.

  • Time Capsule crashes when Time Machine starts a backup

I've not searched through the postings here to see if other people have seen a similar problem. I've not attempted to repeat the problem I've seen here so I'm not very clear about the cause.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.4 connected via a network cabled directly to a Time Capsule which is connected to a DSL/Cable modem. The Time Capsule is updated with v 7.3.2 of the firmware. I've got Time Machine enabled but I'm also using the Time Capsule disk (1TB) to store photos that I've previously archived to CD. I'm in the process of copying all the data from CD to the Time Capsule.
Having copied some photo data to the Time Capsule I was trying out some photo cataloguing SW to see if it was any good (iPhoto is no good to me as I don't want to store photos on the local drive of my machine) - Kodak EasyShare v6.1. Having loaded some images into EasyShare I tried to use finder to search for the file names of some of the images to check that EasyShare was not copying images to my local drive. While I was doing this I think Time Machine tried to kick in and start doing a backup. I believe that Time Capsule crashed at this point. Finder froze and after I restarted it (via Force Quit not a re-boot) I discovered that I had no network connection and Mac OS couldn't see the Time Capsule under FInder or via AirPort Utility (the Time Machine backup also timed out and failed). Time Capsule just sat there with the disk spinning and a green light on the front as if all was OK. Actually - the disk just kept spinning (Time Capsule normally shuts down the drive after it is idle for a while). Because of this I'm pretty sure that Time Capsule had crashed.
I experimented with re-booting my Mac but still no network etc so I tried power cycling the Time Capsule and everything came back to life.
I'm guessing that my doing a search (or some other drive activity on Time Capsule) at the same time as Time Machine kicking in with a backup caused Time Capsule to crash.
Perhaps this is not a very interesting point if this problem is not repeatable but - well, I'd be interested to know if others have seen similar behavior...

I'm having a very similar problem and it is detrimental.
Here is the scenario: I have a 1TB Time Capsule as my primary router. I am able to perform backups on all but one of my machines. My iMac backs up via 1GB ethernet to the TC, my MacBookAir (60GB,SS) backs up via wireless N (270mb) and my other MacBookAir (80GB,IDE) also backs up via wireless N without any problems.
I used to use a 500mb external drive to backup my iMac but outgrew it, so I started backing up to the TC instead. No problems at all.
I also used to back up my Intel MacMini running Mac OS X Server 10.5.5 to a similar external hard-drive but haven't in a while.
I decided it finally made sense to backup ALL my Mac's to the same 1TB TimeCapsule but it's just not working out!
On the MacMini; I turn on TimeMachine, the TimeCapsule has been chosen as a backup location, it prepares backup for a moment, mounts the backup drive and then appears to begin backup up... No...! First I get a message the the TimeCapsule closed the connection, next I lose Internet connection across my entire network both wired and wireless and then the TimeCapsule light turns amber, flashes and essentially does a completel crash / reset and then comes back to life a few moments later. I can backup any other computer except the MacMini to the TimeCapsule without "crashing" it and it makes no sense! Every computer is completely up to date with all the latest patches and the TimeCapsule is running 7.3.2
I sure hope this gets resolved, seems like other people are pretty disgusted with the performance of the TimeCapsule with problems that have no resolution.

  • I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for several years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both?

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

    SeoulTom (Coyner)

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again
Check to make sure that you are running firmware 7.6.4 on the Time Capsule

  • Time Capsule & Clean Install iMac

    Hi
I have 750GB of data to backup onto Time Capsule for its first run. It will take several days to do the first run. If I manage to do this, can I do a clean install on my iMac and use the data on Time Capsule, or will I have to start again? What I'm aiming to do, is safely backup everything to Time Capsule, then spend time removing my files. At the end of that, I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard. I had wanted to do a clean install, run Time Capsule, then add the files as needed. However, some of my files are huge iPhoto libraries that are up to 200GB! I have an external FW800 HD for SuperDuper! clone of the iMac. Apart from that, any advice is most welcome.

    wayne.andrews wrote:

Doubtful, at 75%. First, your Mac automatically and continuously defrags any file under 20 mb. Second, unless your disk has been much more full, and you manipulate lots of large files, the drive won't be seriously fragmented.
How can I check the fragmentation of the iMac?
There's no OSX tool for that, since Apple doesn't think it's necessary. The 3rd-party tools tend to overstate the importance of any fragmentation they find.
At the moment, I am stuck. I have managed to transfer everything that I may need onto the iMac. Most of the data is from Apple's Backup application (where files were backed up onto CD/DVD). For this reason, I have many duplicated files. I don't know where to start.
Do you mean you copied the Backup files? Or used Backup to restore them? Are they Full or Incremental backups? Restoring from them can be tedious, error-prone, and "iffy." Have you ever done any Backup restores?
I could do a clean install and add the files as I need them. Alternatively, I could backup everthing I have now and delete the files. Two ways of doing the same thing - adding or removing. Either way, it's a huge task sorting out the duplicated files, and removing what I no longer need.
I could really do with some advice on how to sort through files - not how to do it, but more a guide to a good strategy. What is the easiest, pain-free way of managing a good de-clutter in small chunks?
It depends on what sort of things you're talking about. If it's 3rd-party apps, erasing and selectively restoring will probably be a nightmare. Many such apps, especially the ones that come with their own installers, put various things in various places, besides the app in your Applications folder. Unless you know what and where all those are, the app may not work right, if at all. Worse, you may not notice that for quite some time, until you try to use a feature you haven't tested. Also, there may be some "leftovers:" background jobs that no longer have what they need to run, so they continually start, crash, and re-start forever, filling up your logs and using lots of CPU.
If it's pure data, such as a very large video library, you likely won't have those sorts of problems, but it would also be much easier to just delete what you don't want.
Without knowing just how much of what sort of stuff you're looking at, it's hard to give better advice. If you have a 2 TB TC, then I'd say back it all up and start deleting; the TC should have plenty of room to keep the backups for a long time. But if you move or rename folders with a lot of content, they'll be backed-up again entirely, so you may fill up the TC rather quickly.
However you approach it, I'd be inclined to also make a full "clone" before starting; check it by booting and running from it to be sure everything's there and working, then put it "on the shelf" in case you need it in a week or a few months.
    Who is Mr Murphy?
Ah, that may be a US-only expression. +Murphy's Law:+ "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong."
The corollary: " . . . and at the worst possible moment."

  • Backup with Time Machine for 6 iMacs

I want to to use an external drive to backup with Time Machine my 6 iMac's. I know that Time Capsule is good for this kind of stuff but I would prefer to be able to plug my Storage Device with an Ethernet cable. And Time Capsule is offering 2 or 3 TB, I would need minimum 5 TB. Any idea what should I buy and what is good for that purpose?
    Thanks a lot

Time Capsule has 3 Eth ports so only 3 iMacs via cable.
You can do it with two 3TB Time Capsules if you wish.
With 6 iMacs you may need to think about small business solution.
On Mac networks we use Gigabit switches and NAS drives such as Buffalo TeraStation III 8TB on RAID5.
Those support Apple Time Machine, have dual Gigabit Eth port which can be trunked with manageable switches and all works very well and fast.
There are many scenarios you may want to consider.
Let me know if you have any questions regarding the above setup.

It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.
You can also verify it. See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

  • How to backup from Time Capsule to external HD?

How to set up files backup from Time Capsule to external HD?

I keep files like photos on TimeCapsule to be available by WiFi and I want to set up my Time Machine to backup picture folder from TimeCapsule to MyPassport HD.

Time Machine can't back up a network volume. You'll have to use third-party software. I don't have a specific recommendation. There is no efficient way at all to back up a Time Capsule, which is why it should only be used as a backup destination, not as a general-purpose file server.

Not only that but my Mac Pro keep running and does not stop, my Address book has a blue light under it but wont open, the light for my monitor in the bottom right corner wont turn on or off. Please need help...

It sounds like there is an issue with the Mac itself.
Use the verify disk A5 in troubleshooting.

Even if you cannot connect by ethernet, at current location.. you can simply disconnect the TC from the network and bring it to the Mac and plug it in by ethernet. The TC can be reset if you haven't got a suitable current setup (save previous setup before you change it) and run just as backup device.. do the backup and then return it to the network.
If this is just a standard incremental backup.. then something has broken. The issue is not the TC pe se but failure in hardware somewhere.

First, Repair your backups per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If that doesn't help, here's a bunch of kernel panic info:

If your backups are ok, erasing the drive probably won't help. But to "archive" the backups, see this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281
