TM backups get stuck if Spotlight is enabled on the TM volume

Hi,
I habe a problem with time machine backups. The problems just appeared recently, I don't know why.
The backup gets stuck in the middle of the process (e.g. it stays at "backing up xx MB of zz MB) for hours, even days. In the logs I do not get any error messages, also the nice Time Machine Buddy widget does not give me any errors.
I tried everything. Nothing helps EXCEPT for one thing: If I turn off Spotlight indexing for the TM volume, everything works fine.
So this clearly is a problem with Spotlight interfering with TM.
Any clues what might be wrong?
Of course I tried resetting the spotlight index, deleting the index, turning it off and back on (in that case, Spotlight indexes the volumen forever end never stops). Nothing seems to help, except for turning it off completely.
I found similar posts to this in the forum, but none ever really presented a solution.
Any help appreciated!

Are you running any virtualization software, such as Parallels or vmWare? If so, that may be the culprit. Exclude the vm file from Time Machine (per #10 in theFrequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum), and delete all backups of it, per #12 there.
If not, or if that doesn't help, you might be able to find the culprit via the +Activity Monitor+ app, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Examine the various processes associated with Spotlight (mds, mdworker, mdhelper). Select the process, then the Inspect icon in the toolbar (or +View > Inspect Process+ from the menubar), then the +Open Files and Ports+ tab.

  • IPhone 3GS backup gets stuck

I'm trying to backup my 3GS as part of updating to the latest version of iOS
    Windows 7
    iTunes 10.4.1.10
    iPhone iOS 4.3.4
It gets stuck at about 10% (estimated from the progress bar) for hours... when I try to cancel it I have to force iTunes to close
I have tried lots - deleting the old backup files; reinstalling iTunes; rebooting PC; hard rebooting iPhone... but nothing has worked
    Any other ideas please

Wish it had helped my problem..... couldn't use the winsock reset as even though already an administrator telling me to elevate status.  Right clicked - no option to run as Administrator.
To make matters worse Apple haven't been able to resolve.  They are supposed to be calling me back.  iTunes now says the phone needs to be restored, then press OK ......  nothing happens, no longer get the extracting software, installing software, (and then the restore which got stuck), just a blank area on iTunes.......
This is my third day without my business phone... not at all impressed with Apple so far.  Told yesterday I had 3 days left on my guarantee.......................
CheeseandBiscuits, any thoughts for my situation????  Am dreading connecting my iPad!

  • Firefox won't start. Everytime I end the process/close the last window, it keeps getting stuck at about 2500k memory in the task manager. (continued)

Firefox won't start. Everytime I end the process/close the last window, it keeps getting stuck at about 2500k memory in the task manager. The only way I have to fix it is to change some kind of compability settings or try and access it in a new way, and every time it crashes/closed/computer blue screens that setting will no longer work.
That is a short term solution, but eventually I'll run out of ways to access firefox successfully. I've tried many solutions, and some worked, but only once. I have yet to find a permanent solution for this problem.

First please update your plugins to make sure you are up to date. Shockwave Flash player has a newer version 16. In order to better manage the memory that Firefox uses please see these troubleshooting steps: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram Firefox Uses too much RAM]
You also mentioned that Firefox crashes, we're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.
#Enter ''about:crashes'' in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
#Copy the '''5''' most recent Report IDs that start with '''bp-''' and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.
''' Note:''' If a recent Report ID does not start with '''bp-''' click on it and select '''Submit'''.
(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

  • Time Capsule backup gets stuck, Spotlight related?

This just started yesterday: my Time Capsule backs up as normal, and seems to be finished, but doesn't quite make it. The Time Machine icon in my menu bar stops spinning and even says the backup has completed, but the backup icon on my desktop does not eject, and I can hear the drive still spinning. I downloaded the Time Machine Buddy widget on the advice of other posts here, and have retrieved the following message from there: "Backup completed successfully.
Waiting for Spotlight to finish indexing /Volumes/Backup of MacBook/Backups.backupdb"
This repeats until I manually eject the backup icon from the desktop. I tried exempting the Time Capsule from Spoltlight searches in System Preferences, and this seemed to do the trick. After doing this, the backup will complete successfully, the icon will eject, and the drive stops spinning, but I would like to include my Time Capsule in my Spotlight searches, so any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Tried the repair, it completed, but didn't report anything, is this normal? Here's a copy of the widget log form my most recent backup, this one is probably a bit longer than usual because the back was verified:

  • Time Machine backup gets stuck - Please help

    Hi all,
I'm backing up my MBP via ethernet to a Time Capsule. The incremental backups take forever and are driving me nuts. The backups seem to be getting stuck midway. The disk sounds like it's spinning but the progress bar doesn't move. Also, it seems to be copying over too many files every hour, like >60000 or so (log below). I doubt that so many files get modified every hour.
I've tried everything (I could think of and find on the discussion boards) like deleting the sparsebundle, deleting the entire backup drive, playing with the backup frequency, nothing works.
    Please help!!
    Thanks,
    DB

The indication that the backup completed successfully is the best evidence that it did. If you want something more explicit, you can proceed as below.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo tmutil compare
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Backup gets stuck and never finishes

I have the same problem, but mine is more difficult. As soon as my phone is plugged in it automatically begins to back up and does not give me the chance to change the back up options. Hi and Welcome to the Community!
It sounds like you configured the Desktop Software to automatically conduct a backup and further selected the option to remember your settings so that you would never again be presented with them. As such, you may also need to perform the above...I looked around and could find no setting to change that would enable you to re-configure. Removing and reinstalling the Desktop Software should give you that choice again.
    Good luck!

  • My backup gets stuck and won't finish?

I am trying to backup my old phone and my current computer, and both get "stuck" during the upload, even though I bought more storage.

This may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your device that is causing the backup to fail.  To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, tap your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup.  Then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app or something in your camera roll that is causing the backup to fail.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If the backup is successful, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is causing the backup to fail and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.

Why does my iphoto seem to get "stuck" a lot of the times when I try to exit it to the point where I have to "force quit" it and how do I fix the problem that causes it?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
does this only happen when you try to quit iPhoto?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

I bought the Open C from eBay UK. I can see the list of my emails on the device, however when I click on the email it gets stuck refreshing and I can't see mail content.
I have reset the phone and also run a software update via the relevant app on the device.
    Please can you assist? Thanks.

I've had a similar problem with the ZTE Open running v1.1. I wasn't using Gmail but my own IMAP provider. It turned out that my desktop email client (Thunderbird for Mac OSX) was creating a strange trash folder where it shouldn't have been. Once I deleted that folder, the phone worked again.
Do you use a desktop email client? Make sure you check its IMAP settings, in particular how you map your trash folder on the desktop. Make sure you store your deleted messages on the server.
That's what solved the problem for me, and I stopped using Thunderbird.

I did that many times, I mean I do it everytime. But it doesnt seem to help. It is strange sometimes the phone is slow and stucks for a many seconds, sometimes it is just one or two seconds. Thank you for your help though, but is there something else that you could think of?

  • Since i updated latest version 6.0.2, it keeps getting stuck and goes really slow and the coloured beach ball spins for ages, so all i can do is force-quit - how can i install the version before this version again?

On a Mac Book pro - running 10.6.8
Firefox was fine until the last couple of updates that happened without my consent (?).
Suddenly there were weird errors and crashes of Flash
and slow loading pages. Now it's gone into rubbish mode where
the beach ball spins at the slightest fast type or double-click and then all i can do is force quit.
It's as if it can't cope with anything anymore.
How do i uninstall and keep my bookmarks etc and re-install an earlier version of it as it was before it got updated?
    Thanks

Hey Thanks for the link thing!
So i had tried it in safe mode, and thought that it was still in SMode but then realized that that stopped once i had closed it and reopened in aft/eve/ last night and started up again today, also. So i just tried it again in safe mode and it seems to not be doing it...but then it's so random anyway. But if i'm in safe mode like this there is no toolbar but i guess that's cool if that is what is making it sluggy and beach ball-y. But how do i stay in safe mode all the time? And if it is only in safe mode then does that mean i can't have the 3 addons i use - (java, QT, Flash- all the other vid things like divx etc are 'disabled' ) I thought those add ons were necessary to play/read things on the net?? Forgive my ignorance in this matter. But saying that, when it was going wrong, and i was clicking on audio links sometimes in the 'blank white page scenario' a popup would come and tell me that i would need ' QuickTime to play this track' and i would click 'continue' and it would link me to Apple to get QT...but i already have QT installed in my MBPro so i thought that was a bit weird...! when i just tried it now in safe mode it went straight to the audio link white page with player in the middle and played the track. But then as i said, it was a bit random before so i don't know if this was just a time when it worked...
Anyway, what do you think about my questions on operating in safe mode...should i have to do that?! i'll stay in Safemode until i hear back from you and see how well it performs.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Why is it that every time I press "Download Trial" the download begins, but gets stuck on "Trying to connect to the server"?

I don't know what to do.

you will have to allow any other adobe's programs to connect once they get installed or they will crash too.  this can be an annoying process as each program can have 3-5 .exe files that all want to have network access just for one program to work. its not that they are all trying to connect to the internet, but adobe's software uses networking to talk to itself inside your computer.  you will have to tell norton's to always allow these, it wont be a one time setting you can get around by temporarily disabling nortons.
