TM Capabilities question

Hey campers
I am trying to plan out a backup/storage solution for my MacBook Pro... I am going to get an ExpressCard eSATA card and an OWC Elite Dual Drive External Enclosure (the one with eSATA, FireWire 400/800 and USB). I currently have 1x 1TB Drive that is my storage drive. I also upgraded my laptops internal drive to 500GB.
My question then is this... If I buy a 1.5TB drive and use it in the dual drive enclosure along with the 1TB drive, can I partition the 1.5TB drive with 500GB to backup the internal and the remaining 1TB for the storage drive?
I am sure someone is asking "why Time Machine for a storage drive?", reason is, I am a photographer and am storing my pictures on it. A mirroring array is a possibility, but a mirror array doesn't save me if pictures are accidentally deleted (as happened to me a month ago). Time Machine will save me from that miss step. Of course CarbonCopyCloner is an option, but Time Machine is automatic and so stinkin sexy.

TM is useful for the times you lose a file while working on it. But for long-term archive/storage it is not good because it is designed to delete backups when space gets scarce.
Proper backup requires sticking to rigorous routines, including rotating backup targets for offsite storage.
This is not to say that you cannot use TM for the eventualities when a file is deleted. You can and if it's been more than an hour since the file was created, there will be a backup of it. But any file created between TM's hourly backups will (of course) not be backed up.
Your backup solution ties in with your photographic workflow and there are many different ways of incorporating backups into that. It depends on how you work, what tasks you carry out, and where you are when doing them (in relation to your backups that is).
Remember also that Aperture, if you use that, includes the Vault feature, which allows you to backup images.
Remember always to backup your master files before working on them. Don't rely on TM cathing them (or on image editor applications' "non-destructive" editing).
One can have one area which is used for "active" files, ie files you're working on and processing. That area - such as a folder (like Desktop) - can then be backed up by TM. This will recover any accidental deletions, subject to TM's one-hour rule.
Set up a routine to backup - either manual backups or scheduled backups. For the latter, have a look at for instance the paid-for version of SuperDuper. This also includes the SmartUpdate function, which only backs up what's changed since the last time. This makes backups significantly faster.
Then add to this rotating backup targets for extra security.
Simplicity is also part of any backup routine (which explains why TM is so tantalising). So one idea is to designate your desktop as the "active area" and have TM backup your bootdrive (incl the desktop) to the 500 GB partition, then manually clone your 1TB storage to the 1TB volume on the 1.5TB drive.
Just some thoughts. There are many different ways and the best is to try out.

Yep, they're both on different channels, so in theory you can add as many devices as you like, but some devices must be powered independently cause you can't bus power everything.
2 - Can a regular fire wire device (big plug) be used
(with and adapter cable) on the 800 port?
Yup, you can buy a FW800 to FW400 converter, though they're not cheap and might take a little searching around for one.
3 - Is there a 400 hub available that will allow
multiple devices to connected simultaneously?
Yup. There is a number of devices that can act as a FirwWire hub, some are embedded into other devices. Take the Iomega MiniMax Hard Drive for example.
4 - Is there a 800 hub available that will allow
multiple devices to connected simultaneously?
Yup.. Again, they can be embedded as part of a device, though you can buy stand alone units but the price isn't cheap.

FMS2 noob with capabilities question

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I am just learning the basics of FMS2 and have some simple
questions(I hope).
I currently have a php/mysql application that creates mixes
of mp3s.The songs are played using progressive downloads and this
is causing some concerns among the license holders.I understand
that by using FMS2 I can stream the mp3s instead.
My question is about keeping current functionality after
migrating to FMS2.
My mp3 player uses xml playlists.Its is already coded to hook
into flashcom streams if needed. To create a playlist, a user
searches the DB and adds songs to his account. I then use php to
write the added song data to an xml playlist. The playlist is
stored in the users folder, with a copy of the mp3 player. The mp3s
are all pulled from a specific location on the server.
From what I have learned about FMS2 so far(which is very
little), I am not sure if streams can be dynamically created in the
same fashion. I have seen plenty of info about FMS2 streaming mp3s
from a specific playlist with the mp3 all coming from the
application folder, but not any info about what I am trying to
attempt.
I would not be doing the coding myself, I can handle
php/mysql but I know very little about action script and have
little time to learn. But I want to know if I am barking up the
wrong tree. Are dynamic streams possible? I dont want to look like
an idiot when I try to hire someone to code an impossible solution.
Im not looking for a how to, just want to know if the capability
exists in FMS2

Yes... everything you're asking about can be done with FMS,
and fairly easily at that.

Novice: PDF basic capabilities questions

I've used Reader and for some time have had CS2. I want to expand my understanding of PDF capabilities just a little.
I see that PDF files can be reviewed and marked up. Are there other collaborative capabilities? A good link might be best.
I'm also curious about the use of PDF output for print or web. I sorta get gifs and jpegs and the scalability of vector graphics and the un-scalability of raster graphics. Where do PDF file in that spectrum?
Keep it high level and simple. My interest is more in finding a direction than exploiring specific answers.

Photoshop Elements capabilities question

I need to design a 7"x14" instert for a CD binder. Is Photoshop Elements enough or should I go with something else. I have no plans on doing any web based design but want the ability to creat a "semi-professional" insert. thank you!

You can make your own template and add images and text.
Click File >> Open and select all of your photos
That will add them to the project bin
Then select File >> New >> Blank File
Select background color White (or whatever you prefer) and add your width and height for your final image (set resolution 72 for web usage or 240 to 300 for printing) then click OK
In the project bin click your first photo and drag it up into the main window on top of your new background.
Click on the move tool and click in the center of the photo and drag to arrange it where you want on the background - you can hold down the shift key to maintain original proportions whilst dragging the corner handles of the bounding box to get the size you want.
Do the same with the next photo (drag it up into the main window) and use the move tool to position it. Then continue with each image.
Finally Click Layer >>Flatten image and save as jpeg. (Save as PSD if you want to preserve the layers for editing again)
N.B. as you add images they get dropped in the center. So you need to use the move tool to drag them apart. Click in the middle of one and move it around, and then the others until you get them positioned as you want.

Director capabilities question

I've never used Director, and I'm trying to determine if it
is the correct application for a project. I need to create a User
Interface/menu that would allow a presenter to select from a
variety of informational materials - some of which will be
PowerPoint and Word docs. Can Director launch Office applications?
I found the following description, but it doesn't specify
what applications:
"Create full-featured applications that access, launch, and

Yes, Director can do all that easily. There is an xtra for
Director
called BuddyAPI which you can get from
www.mods.com.au/budapi
that will make your life a lot easier. It will let you open
specific
applications or launch files with their associated
application with a
single line of code. It also lets you have good control over
how the
windows display. I would recommend looking into it if you
decide to do
this project in Director. You can do most of it with the
stuff that
comes built into Director, but BuddyAPI makes it really easy.

Calling DOS command from a webpage?

How would I go about doing this? I want a webpage that when an image is clicked this DOS command is called:
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen Image_Location\image.jpgThis command opens the image in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I'm not worried about portability since this is only going to be on my home network. I figure I'll probably need Java or something to do this, but I've no clue where to start looking. Help is appreciated!

called:First of all, this is not a Java-related question. It is an HTML and browser capabilities question.
Second of all, in general this is not possible. If it were, imagine the security issues allowing a web page to arbitrarily allow executing anything on the client victim's machine. At best the user has to configure his browser to "trust" content from the site in question. Since you as the application provider can't force this configuration to happen automatically, you're out of luck unless you are in complete control over the clients (such as if they are all within the corporate intranet only).

Question(s) Regarding Personas Capabilities

We are new users of Personas and are trying to figure out all of the tool's capabilities. Below are some questions that our users had when determining whether or not the Personas tool can replace some GUI screens:
1) Is it possible to have field requirements in text boxes created (e.g. character limits and number/letter only restrictions)?
2) Can scripts be used between multiple sessions in Personas? For example, we would like to be able to "/o" with a transaction in a script button, but it simply does nothing if we try that. Furthermore, it will not allow us to use fields from other sessions in a script (e.g. we would like to copy a value in session 1 and paste it in session 2, but got the error that the control wasn't found. Is this possible in Personas scripting)?
3) In certain transactions, there are different buttons at the top of the screen depending on which tab is selected on a screen, and when creating a flavor, it somehow only grabs the buttons from the tab you are currently on and uses those on every tab on the screen. Is there some setting where we can get around this issue?
4) General scripting question: is there a way to alter the size of the box when creating scripts to make it easier to see all of the steps? Additionally, is there a way to make navigation within the scripting tool easier (because when you delete a step it takes you to the top of the screen, which can be tedious if you are working with a very large script)?
5) In the GUI, at the very top-left there is a menu that has an option for users to either Stop Transaction or Create Session and these options are missing when using Personas. Is there a solution for recovering this functionality in Personas?
6) In scripting, we are trying to create a Fast Order Entry (and Fast Order Display) option but when trying to copy/paste variant configuration the script gives a "control not found" error message. In scripting, is there some special action that needs to take place when trying to copy/paste VC values? We have had success with the general order header/line item data but always run into errors with the VC.
7) Can variants be used within Personas?
We understand that Personas may not be able to fully replace every piece of GUI functionality but we are trying to get a yes/no as to some of the questions we have come up with.

I am using ME54N Transaction code, when run my script with my logon all works ok as scrip was recorded with my id and correct table variant But same script failed for other user as their table variant are different by default.
Please help me understand how can set variant dynamically execute my script and then again revert variant for user as my all scripting is dependent on column sequence in a particular variant.
Global Variant change in ME54N reflected in all ME51N/ME52N/ME53N .. so we can not set it as global for all user.

Question about Lego Mindstorms Capabilities

Hello, thank you for reading my question!
I am currently working on the creation of a teleoperated robotics lab. for a introductory robotics course. I wish to allow students to control a labyrinth-solver robot via Labview, with the Lego NXT toolbox. A computer server will be connected to the Lego via Bluetooth, and the student communicates with the server via a web browser VI (a web published VI). I am interested on the Lego Mindstorm platform but I wanted to ask some questions about its software capabilities:
*Is it posible via a web VI interface for the student to load a program onto the Lego Mindstorm? My idea is to allow the student to load a VI (or the equivalent of a LEGO NXT ".exe")onto the server, and the server to load the program to the Lego. The Web VI already has some parameters the student can change a simple program execution (see [1]), but I also wanted to give the student the chance of loading their own program for more complicated algorithms.

[SMS capabilities] Several questions

I have several questions about iPhone SMS capabilities.
Q1 : is it possible to launch an application when receiving a SMS with particular content or from a specific phone number ? What kind of notifications can be done toward the application when receiving this SMS ?
Q2 : is it possible to parse SMS content inside the application ?
Q3 : is it possible to send an automatic SMS with the application, without user need to write it ? For example, the user does a particular action that results into a SMS sending toward a server which controls other user equipments.

Hi there! From my experience (having very very briefly developed for iPhone) is that:
1. No, and the SMS app cannot 'hand off' to another app;
2. The iPhone SMS database cannot be read from another 3rd party app;
3. I'm unsure whether the SMS app has it's own protocol (like, sms:).
Your best bet, if you are a registered iPhone developer, is to post these questions on the Apple iPhone Developer forums.

A few questions on capabilities of Livecycle barcoded forms

I'm looking at options for automating an existing paper-based form, and have a couple of questions on the capabilities of Adobe barcoded forms:
- Complex validation: There is a section of the form which requires entry of an address history for the last 5 years. The addresses entered must be validated to ensure that there are no gaps or overlaps in the time periods for each address. Is this level of validation possible?
- Some of the information on the form needs to be pre-populated from information available in a database(e.g. for renewal applications). Is it possible to generate part-populated forms on the fly, and send these to users to complete the remainder? (rather than requiring the user to enter all fields)

I believe you're looking at the wrong product, LiveCycle Barcoded Forms is a decoder for decoding information from the paper forms barcode object if it's place on the form.
- Complex Validation: If I understand correctly you want to check the set of entered addresses to make sure that there is no gap in the time line. If so, then yes, this can be done iwth a validation script on the form.
- Form Prepopulation: Yes, this is typically done using LiveCycle Forms (previously known as Form Server).

Follow up question on reporting capabilities.

I just need to follow up to my orignial question to make sure I am making sense. I wondered if there was intelligence in forms central to query incoming data- ie. pull a report on what email addresses viewed a form. An analogy of the type of report would be if you wanted to pull a report on incoming calls to your cell phone- for this type of query you would not need to know who your outgoing calls were- you would be trying to determine incoming information. Thanks again for the help.

If you asked for email address in your form then you would know (its in the response table). If you didn't ask for an email then there is no way to know.

Questions on capabilities and requirements

I'm planning out a 3-4 person mail/webmail/collaborative service server for a sales office at a remote location.
The network hardware items I have a good grip on but the Mac server environment I have a few questions for:
1. I have found a thread or two... and I have read in a few spots that mail redundancy is not possible without the use of Xsan's. I assume this is correct, but what is the minimum hardware requirements for (for example) 2 mail server (primary/backup) and mail store server (3 total). (I have a concern on cost of this capability)
2. Time Machine backup. I have read that in OS X Server, TM fails to backup everything, but will cover all user related data (mail, home folders, iCal, CardDAV, etc.) What does TM fail to backup? (I could not find a clear answer for this) (Referring me to a thread for this is OK!)
3. In terms of Remote admin. Are there any limitations to remote admin, besides not being there physically for physical troubleshooting? And... this absolutely requires the remote admin to have a Mac (any Mac will suffice, Ipads, Iphones?)
4. When configuring users in OD, I'm assuming its possible to chose whether or not a certain users "home" will be located on the server or kept on the user's own machine. Correct?
5. I read in the server manuals that ICal and CardDAV setup asks admins to set the max size of storage. ICal also asks about max size of individual entries... I'm not familiar with how big ICal entries can be? Can anyone elaborate on what a user can enter into any single entry in ICal?
6. Relating to #1, if I decide to stick with only one mail server. Though I could probably recover from a disk failure (with a bootable image)... Would it be wise to have a second server to join the network and serve as a backup vs. let users hang without mail / along with waiting for a new server to arrive?
This would assume I can remote to the 2nd Server and setup the mail service on that and bring over the mail store from backups.

Mail services don't require an XSAN. You should have a primary and a secondary mail server - 2 minis would be fine. Of course, you'll need to fix the primary in a hurry if it goes down.
Time Machine is not going to properly backup a server. IIRC, mail services are one of the reasons not to use TM on a server.
There is VNC software to remote into a Mac from a PC. Not sure about iPads and iPhones.
I haven't used calendar services on an OS X Server, so I have nothing there to offer.
If email is a valuable service, you shouldn't rely on one server.

offers a lot of email service for $20 per month. There are other companies offering the same services. I'm not sure of your comfort level with email servers, but if you're new to it, there's a lot to learn, and a lot of mistakes you can make.
Google calendar may be worth looking into, and they do email hosting with your own domain if you'd like.

Questions About Office 365 Capabilities

I am exploring the possibility of putting our organization's Office on, "the cloud" using Office 365 Enterprise E2. I have some questions that are important. Any help will be appreciate.
1. I have developed extensive VBA "code behind" on Word files and Excel workbooks that do complex operations. For instance, I open our Outlook public folder shared contacts to do searches and populate forms and Excel cells.
I use NPOI calls to create downloadable Excel workbooks, etc. I use calls to SQL to access and query databases and return data. Is the VBA coding supported with Office 365? If so, what restrictions might there be over my current situation,
where Exchange and Office are hosted on our servers?
2. In general, what restrictions will I encounter with Exchange and Office being hosted by Microsoft, versus these tools being hosted on our servers?
