TM Creates Partition When Restoring onto a Larger HD

My 120gb drive crashed some weeks ago. I replaced it with a 250gb drive shortly thereafter and used Time Machine to restore my data. After the restore, I discovered that it had actually partitioned the 250gb drive into a 120gb partition (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with my data, and an unformatted 130gb "Free Space" partition. What's the deal with this?
Is there a way to recombine the 130gb "FreeSpace" partition with the other 120gb...so that I have my system utilizing the on an entire 250gb or am I going to have to rebuild the entire system piecemeal by hand dragging and dropping from my files from the backup drive into a fresh install of Leopard on my computer?
-Gabriel

That's really odd... I changed my internal MacBook Pro's HD last month and had no problem with the machine formatting the complete drive.
I did however do a fresh install, formatting the new HD from Leopards disk utility.
I don't know of a way to combine the two partitions, but I am sure it's posible, however I would simply recommend cloning your internal HD to an external drive, reformating the internal (as I did with disk utility) and then cloning back the original. This will save the file by file copy situations.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner.
Sorry... Someone might have an easier answer for you.

  • How do I create a recovery partition when restoring from Time Machine?

I am planning to replace the HDD in my Macbook Pro with an SSD. I've used Time Machine to backup my HDD (running Mountain Lion) but am trying to find the best way to restore my Time Machine backup to the new SSD once installed.
Given that the new SSD will not have a bootable OS X Recovery partition, I have created a bootable OS X Recovery drive on a USB thumb drive using OS X Recovery Assistant.
In order to ensure that the new SSD has the OS X Recovery parition, should I:
         (1) reinstall Mountain Lion on the SSD then recover my data from Time Machine; or
         (2) can I simply use the Restore from Time Machine option in OS X Recovery to do it all at once.
I can't seem to work out whether option (2) will create the OS X Recovery partition on the new SSD or just recover the system partition.

Turns out the OS X Recovery partition is only created on a fresh install of OS X. Restoring via Time Machine will not do the trick.

  • Time Machine backup created on Mac with a large hard disk. What happens when restore to MacBook Air with small SSD drive?

What if a Time Machine backup was created on a Mac with a large hard disk, e.g. 500GB iMac - and I buy a new MacBook Air with a small SSD hard disk e.g 128GB. What happens when I need to use the larger Time Machine file to set up the new MacBook Air? What happens to all those files that can't fit on the smaller SSD drive?

It is not the HD size, but rather the size of the data it contains. If you right-click your 500GB drive and select "Get Info" you can see how much is actually being used.
Naturally if you are using more space than the new drive has, then you have to make some choices about what you want to keep and what you want to keep archived.
I don't know what options are available but you may simply have to do a manual restore of files you want, in groups.

Sorry our primary database file structure is different from stdby, we used db_file_name_convert in the init.ora, it look like this:
    *.db_file_multiblock_read_count=16
    *.db_file_name_convert='+OT06_DATA/OT06TSG001/','+RT06_DATA/RT06/','+RECO/OT06TSG001','+RECO/RT06'
    *.db_files=2000
    *.db_name='OT06'
    *.db_recovery_file_dest='+RECO'
Is there any thing wrong in this parameter.
I tried this parameter before for cloning using rman backup. This din't work.
What exactly must be done? for db_file_name_convert to work.
Even in this case i think this is the problem its not converting the location and the logical halts.
    help me out.....
let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks Regards
    Raghavendra rao Yella.

    Hi reega,
Thanks for your reply, our logical stdby has '+RT06_DATA/RT06'
    and primary has '+OT06_DATA/OT06TSG001'
so we are using db_file_name_convert init parameter but it doesn't work.
Is there any thing particular steps hiding to use this parameter? as i tried this parameter for rman cloning it din't work, as a workaround i used rman set new name command for clonning.
Let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Trying to get rid of error "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition". Recovery HD visible.

    Hello,
I've been stuck for some hours now trying different things to install Windows 7 on my Macbook Air, and I think now is the time to call for some custom help.
    I'm using OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks.
So some months ago I just wanted to run Linux on my laptop so I installed rEFInd, shrunk the Macintosh HD partition by 25GB and booted on a linux live USB flash I burned using dd.
Then I used gparted to create my linux partitions.
It worked just fine, even though disk utility from OS X seemed quite unhappy about this (it seemed to have incorrect informations about the filesystem on these partitions, seeing them as journaled Mac OS while they were clearly not). At this point already, the Recovery HD from mac showed up in disk utility, which I found weird but didn't bother me.
But recently I needed windows on my Mac. So after a few tries for the triple boot, I managed to create a bootable USB stick with boot camp, which already showed me the message "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition" and hence refused to partition/install himself.
So I thought "OK, that's no big issue, I can just partition with disk utility and then boot on the USB stick and everything will work fine". But when EFI booting on the USB flash drive I got stuck at the beginning of Windows installer with no keyboard or mouse support.
After some hours spent googling, I was unable to find a working fix for that, and as there was no support for my case (where I used bootcamp to create the bootable flash but NOT to partition/reboot) I decided to give bootcamp a try.
So I erased my linux partitions, and cleaned up everything I could on the HD with disk utility. That means I now have two partitions showing in disk utility : Macintosh HD and Recovery HD.
When using disk utility from terminal, the list is :
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *121.3 GB   disk0
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            80.0 GB    disk0s2
       3:                  Apple_HFS Recovery HD             650.1 MB   disk0s3
But boot camp still isn't happy, and the message "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition" keeps popping after the intro and I can't partition/boot from bootcamp.
So, as I don't understand what is wrong here anymore, any help would be greatly appreciated!
I will be watching the thread a lot because I really would like this resolved (or windows installed one way or another) this weekend; so any questions on my past manipulations or config just ask!
    Thank you.

keyboard issues are also something of a common issue.
I wish the best threads were voted to the top of forums, something! Me, I literally burned out here, but after installing 10 Preview, wanted to "see what was going on" after hiatus of a couple years and see if anything had changed (no, not really!)
Also, these new Communities are not putting "more like this" and failing to help too.
I think rewriting Boot Camp Assistant's built in help and pdf would help a lot, and needs to be clearer and go into details. And Yosemite was not it seems tested against Boot Camp, and drivers for new Macs + new OS also lag behind. Again, common and no sign of improvement or change.
One of the tricks to the "can't partition" is rather simple - of course backup is step #1 and is spelled out - SHRINK the main HFS+ partition! then stretch it back to full length. Sometimes a reboot is needed, and sometimes even do a Safe Boot - not sure what but Recovry Mode might be a good option too. That does seem to consolidate free space, move files that are locked and cannot be moved otherwise, and allow BCA to partition, jusst be sure to have enough space left and large enough for a proper Windows install (and fudge factor).

  • Stuck in Disk Utilities "creating partition map"

I don't know if this is the right place for this topic but here goes.
I just bought a new Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus 500 gig external drive to back up my stuff. I thought Maxtor, for Macs, were pretty much plug and go but it says that I must prepare the drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled)..aka..partition it in order for Mac to recognize it and be able to copy data onto it. Fair enough...but when I go to disk utilities and hit "partition" it starts "creating partition map". The little blue bar starts going...not even an 1/8 of an inch or so annnnnd then just stays there. I waited about 20 minutes before force quiting Disk Utility (in hopes I didn't just hose the drive). I rebooted and tried again...same thing....as a matter of fact it's still going as I write this. I'm so tired of running into issues lately I could scream. WHAT IS UP? Does it take that long to create a single partition on a 500gig drive? (I have it connected through the firewire, not the USB 2.0 port). Help PLEASE! thanks!

It does not take more than about 20 seconds to create a partition map If every block is good. You may have a bad block in the first part of the drive.
I suggest you initialize the drive with the "Zero all data" option, while you do not have much written to it. This process takes several hours, but when it completes successfully, you are assured that any bad blocks have been eliminated and the drive has substituted good spare blocks (kept aside for just this purpose).

  • When restoring an iPhoto library I got an "unexpected error" message and the operation could not be completed. Is my best choice to try again?

One of my external hard drives died. I had several iPhoto libraries in it. Fortunately, I used Time Machine to backup to a Time Capsule and I can see all the iPhoto library icons in Backups.
When restoring the first iPhoto library, after three hours, I got an "unexpected error" message and the operation could not be completed. Indeed, the restored library is smaller than the library in Backups. Is my best choice to try again and replace the restored library (which apparently must be missing some photos)? It would mean another 3 hours plus of restoration with fingers crossed...
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

I am always suspicious of using a different OS to the one that was used to run the backup.. ie if you used Snow L to backup then there is absolutely nothing wrong with using SL to restore.
Mount the TC sparsebundle and verify it using disk utility.
    A5 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You might also like to load the widget in Time Machine so you get whatever the full error message is..
I cannot find any reference to the error code you are getting..
My recommendation would be to try it on a different computer.. restore the whole backup to an external drive large enough to accept the whole backup.
Use the manual methods pondini recommends.

Use ethernet only. Turn off wireless so it does not enter the situation.

  • Boot Camp error: The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

    Hi!
    I am getting the error:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.  The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
I read up some on google, but all of them says that they have crated a partition and that is the problem, I only have the standard "Macintosh HD".
I tried to create a partition manually in disk utility but then the error message: "Partition failed with error message: Could not unmount disk."
Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy.
    Thanks.

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

  • To project onto a large screen

Hi, I would like to be able to project my photo slideshow on a large screen in an art gallery. What is the best way to save my file to do this. My photos are large at around 6000x4000, however they are all horizontal. The show itself is only around 8 mins long. Thanks

The information that we are going to have to coordinate
Premiere Elements 13/13.1 or Elements Organizer 13/13.1 for creating slideshow file for projecting on large screen.....
    a. Premiere Elements 13/13.1 Editor Timeline content to produce the slideshow as a AVCHD.mp4 file (1920 x 1080p25), transitions, effects, no menus.
    or
    b. Elements Organizer 13/13.1 Slideshow Builder Slideshow with one of five possible themes for export as 720p or 1080p (AVCHD.mp4 file)...no menus.
Elements Organizer Help | Create slideshows
As far as I can tell that Elements Organizer Slideshow is only at 30 progressive frames per second. We cab discuss that later if necessary.
Either way, we need to start by knowing how many photos and the pixel dimensions and frame aspect ratio of each.
We know there will be between 90 to 100 photos. What is the pixel dimensions of each (width in pixels x height in pixels)? If the pixel dimensions are way over 1920 x 1080 16:9, then you may have to crop resize or resize them to 1920 x 1080 16:9 - depends on your computer resources and see Note.
Note: If the photos have a 3:2 or 4:3 frame aspect ratio, then you may have to crop resize to 16:9 1920 x 1080. If you have photos with 16:9 frame
aspect ratio, then you just resize. to 1920 x 1080.
If you use "a", your export will be
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVCHD
    with Presets = MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p25
If you use "b", after you build the slideshow, then you export as 720p or 1080p file to computer hard drive.
The Computer Player and the Projector
I am not sure if you will have a projector available to you or whether you will have to purchase one on your own.
Connections, resolution, etc of the protector may force the modification of the file creation. If your file has a higher resolution
than the native resolution of the project, an automatic scaling may occur for example from 1920 x 1080 to 1280 x 720. As
talked about in this older article on projector native resolution and maximum resolution.
    http://www.projectorcentral.com/maximum_resolution.htm
Often you will see the recommendation to match the native resolution of the projector with the resolution of the file being
projected onto your screen...reason to avoid the automatic scaling and possibly less clear viewing.
Once we get more information on the projector, we can decide whether to go for a Premiere Elements 1280 x 720 16:9 slideshow
    or 1920 x 1080 16:9 slideshow or other.
If you can do a private mini test run with the equipment that you will be using before the actual showing, good idea.
    Just some thoughts for now.

  • Visual Studio Update 2 hangs for 13 minutes on "Creating a system restore point..."

It appears that Visual Studio 2012 Update 2 hangs for a long period of time before it tries to create a system restore point.  Should I create a Microsoft Connect issue for this?
    Here is what I did:
I created a new Windows 8 x86 Virtual Machine using VirtualBox.  I installed Visual Studio 2012 and Update 1 because Update 2 was not yet out.  I came back 1 week later and tried to install Visual Studio Update 2.
When I ran the installer on the Virtual machine, it hung for seemingly 10 minutes at "Creating a system restore point..." I powered off the virtual machine and disabled system restore.  I then ran with the /layout option on the host machine
so I could pre-download the files.  Then I tried again.
Again, it hung.  This time I let it go.  It hung for exactly 13 minutes before it gave up and continued on to the install.  The log file says this:
    [0EBC:0F90][2013-04-18T12:39:36]: Apply begin
    [0EBC:0F90][2013-04-18T12:39:36]: MUX:  Apply Phase Begin

[01F4:0748][2013-04-18T12:52:34]: Could not create system restore point, error: 0x80070422. Continuing...
NOTE: Although it says "Creating a system restore point" at 12:52, it actually displayed the message on the screen at 12:39.  That indicates that it was really doing something else during those 13 minutes, not creating the restore point.
That is corroborated by the fact that it took a long time regardless of system restore being on or off.
If no one has any information or explanation, I will create an issue on Microsoft Connect.

I have the same issue. Visual Studio 2013 Professional update 2 was not installed from Web installer. Rather I downloaded a trial version and now want to uninstall it. However, I let the uninstaller try to create a Restore Point all night while I slept.
Next day, not done. So I clicked cancel, and it then commenced to create a restore point for the cancel. I did let the cancel run for awhile but I rebooted.
I then researched something on how to disable the restore point security on my drive, but that did not deter Visual Studio from trying to protect me and it TRIES to create a restore point before uninstalling. Just hangs forever. I don't need a restore point
for an eval copy of VS, thank you very much. Perhaps a simple dialog ("Do you want to create a restore point?") would be helpful?
Update: turning off Windows Defender fixed the problem.

    Hi Rajneesh,
Check whether you have both the row-axis and column-axis of the input template through 'edit report'.
Probably your input template has some member dimensions missing in your template.
We have faced the same problem before and corrected it.
This error occurs sometimes when we create a input template by clearing defining the row & column axis in the template but afterwards try some EPMOlapmember in any axis by deleting the original report elements.
So check the input template once again. I think you will track the error.

  • Bootcamp error, 'the startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.'

I am trying to set up bootcamp for gaming purposes.
I attempted this several months ago and was able to proceed to the point of accessing the Windows disk utility but noticed that I was running out of memory on the partition. I believe I deleted the partition through mac OS, thinking I would simply re-run Bootcamp. Honestly, I have forgotten the details but now am unable to get past an error message on Bootcamp saying, "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition."
Also, when I look at my disk utility settings I see I have two Macintosh HD with exactly the same numbers, i.e. 1.94 TB free of 2.09 TB.
Any assistance with this would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • How can I get an image to stretch the length of my Website when being viewed on larger screens?

Heres an example of my site im working on HERE I would like for the image on the landing page to stretch from edge to edge as needed when being viewed on larger screens. I know it's possible because it's done here I just don't know how to do it PLEASE HELP.

To achieve a similar effect, simply use the Rectangle tool to create a horizontal bar that snaps-to-fit the browser area in Design mode. Then use the Fill options to insert an image within the rectangle; you may also want to change the Fitting option to Scale to Fill or Tile/Tile Horizontally. Refer to the following screenshot.
    Thanks,
    Vinayak
