TM Did a FULL backup AGAIN today...

Got rid of my WD HD (from the Apple Store) as it kept freezing my MBPro w/10.5.1 & would no longer finish a backup. Bought a new LaCie @ Apple Store yesterday and first BU w/TM took 1 hour for 30 GB.
Today after a few short multi-minute TM backups, I used Pacifist to put iPhoto back on the MBPro, and TM then did a FULL backup of 30 GB which took another hour, just like yesterday.
1. Is there some known reason for this?
2. Can this be prevented?
3. Can you manually access the data off of a corrupted HD (possibly like my WD which would get in an endless loop with TM). Attempting to copy files or folders off a TM set said I didn't have sufficient privileges, in spite of me signing in as root.
Without the ability to wind up recovering usable files manually (with HD damage), I have some doubts about Time Machine.

It indeed appears that "Error: (-8088)" on iPhoto.app is at the heart of the problem in 3-4 notes in the log. Subsequent backups (maybe after the Software Update ran) did not note any further errors. I also saw a Windows TT font & some Windows files give an error once, so I deleted those files, even though subsequent backups did not show the error again.
The following is the "-8088" error regarding iPhoto:
1/10/08 12:50:46 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[580]
Error: (-8088) copying /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Frameworks/DotMacKit.framework/PrivateHeaders to /Volumes/LC3/Backups.backupdb/BoMBP15/2008-01-10-124632.inProgress/89702617-393 F-4AC7-B360-EE9CDBF8F993/MBPx51/Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Frameworks/DotM acKit.framework
Prior to that I note: "1/10/08 11:25:07 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3758]
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume MBPx51"
That seems to imply that the extraction and install of iPhoto changed the volume identification.
I considered deleting the backup, and see what happens, though that might trigger another FULL backup, so I'll leave it. I do not think I can identify what went on with the prior Western Digital HD faults, however, as there is no console log going back to those dates for some reason.
Thanks Much

  • Time machine, did it perform a full backup?

A bit new to this. Upgraded to a new MBPro retina, mt lion from an older MBP using migration assistant.
After all was finished and all the files were on my new machine (I did not use Time machine to migrate or backup to the new mac, I used migration assistant), I connected to time machine to perform a completely new backup of the new machine. I have 295GB to copy over. So, it seemed to take forever. I was on day 2, noticed all the threads about the slowness, but then the new machine froze. It said it was around 170GB through it. I could have also had a bit of interuppted internet too in that time. I also could not access the internet on the new machine at all by that point. So, I rebooted and I assume by finding the disc and starting again, it looked like it picked back up at roughly 125GB. that took about 6 hours or so. So, I think that roughly it may have gotten the whole 250 gb but not sure.
Also, on my select disc option I have two listings for my time capsule now. Not sure if that makes a difference.
My question really is how can I see what exactly went through? I have entered time machine but can't tell really if everything in those files copied. Can I at least see the size of the backup on time machine? I would even be willing to do a forced full backup again of all 295GB, but can't seem to see how to do that.
I am a bit new to this part, so sorry if I am asking really obvious questions. I just didn't want to find out at a later time that I only have partial backups. Thanks for any advice.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo tmutil compare
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Time machine full backup after disk and disk permissions repair

my macbook would not boot so i inserted the snow leopard DVD and did a disk repair and disk permissions repair, after that it booted perfectly but when it went to do a backup it did a full backup of 149GB , i am unsure why it has done this and would like to know how to stop it as i am trying to save space on my time capsule.
    thank you in advance

    Brycycle wrote:
i do not wish to let it do a full backup so as to save space on my time capsule but this is the log up till when it started transferring data.
I'm afraid you don't have much choice. You do have lot of space available, though.
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
No pre-backup thinning needed: 165.92 GB requested (including padding), 507.60 GB available
The "deep traversal" means TM compared everything on your system to the backups, and estimates that about 138 GB is new/changed (it adds 20% for workspace on the TM disk - the "padding" in the message).
If there's about 138 GB on your system, see #D3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some common reasons for TM to do a new full backup.
If there's more, #D4 there has some common reasons for large backups.
If all you did was repair disk and permissions, neither should have resulted.
the reason i did a permission repair and disk repair while running from the install disk was because my laptop would not boot from the internal disk so i did both just to be safe.
That's fine; just do the Permissions Repair again, while running normally.

  • TM always do full backups, I tried everything :(

I recently did a full backup of my internal HD on my time capsule using TM.
    200Go... I survived
Little problem : now TM does not do any incremental backup and each time wants to archive my entire HD again, 200Go.
I really don't understand, it used to work fine
I tried many things until I reinstalled my TC and restarted again from scratch my TM backup...but nothing changed.
my config is pretty simple : iMac running 10.6.3 + Time Capsule (1To, 1st Gen)
Been playing with mac for 20 years and usually solve things by myself but this time, I'm lost.
    any idea ?
    thanks a bunch
PS: never been asked to install the recent update that requires to make full backup

    Hi,
You've posted in the Leopard Time Machine forum, and one post says you're running Leopard, the other Snow Leopard, so color me confused. (If you click +My Settings+ at the right of this page and fill it in, that will be automatically added to all your posts.)
We've seen this a few of times on Snow Leopard. If you're really on Leopard, these may not apply.
A long shot, but easy to do if you haven't already, is to +*Repair Permissions+* on your boot drive.
In one case, it turned out to be a problem with an extended attribute. If you're comfy with Terminal, take a look at this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2161241&tstart=0&messageID=102 40585#10240585
Another was something corrupted in OSX; a reinstall of OSX did it: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2198474&tstart=0&messageID=104 23492#10423492
After reinstalling OSX, download and install the "combo" update to get back to 10.6.3. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1017 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
PS: never been asked to install the recent update that requires to make full backup
That doesn't get offered to everybody; some folks with TC's don't get it, some who don't have them do. We've still not figured out just what it's looking for, finding, or fixing. And it doesn't always make a full backup; it only reports that in a few cases.

  • 2nd backup always full backup

    Hi:
I'm setting up time machine to work on a USB drive attached to an airport extreme.
Just reformatted the drive to GUID and took the apostrophes and periods out of my network name.
Things work but there is one problem: the second backup is always a full backup. Ie it backs up 90 gigs, then the second backup is again a 90gig backup.
    After that it works fine.
For my first backup I'm plugging the drive in directly through USB, then I go and plug it in through the airport extreme, then when it starts to do a full 90 gig backup for the second backup I cancel, unplug the drive, plug it back in through USB and let it finish the second backup.
After that things work normally but I'm concerned because there's an extra 90 gig on my disk=my disk will get full quickly. I'm using a 500gig disk to backup two macbooks with about 90gig a piece on them currently.
From console the only thing that looks out of place is:
25/03/08 2:27:45 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[2925] Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Gojira
Should I be concerned? Am I doing something wrong here?

Short answer, yes. Both computers backed up for the second time as if it were an initial backup.
However that was before I reformatted the hard drive -- it wasn't GUID.
Sorry, that's confusing. Here's what happened:
    1. Plugged in macbook. Did full backup.
    2. Second backup on macbook: did full backup again.
    3. From then on with macbook: normal backups.
    4. Plugged in macbook pro, did full backup.
    5. Second backup on macbook pro did full backup.
    6. From then on macbook pro backedup normally.
    7. Realized I needed to reformat the drive to GUID. Refmoratted.
    8. Did first backup with macbook pro. Did full backup.
    9. Did second backup with macbook pro... doing full backup. I'm mid-backup right now.
For my initial backup on the macbook pro, console reported 465.29GB available. For the second backup 379.48GB available. Currently in the finder -- I am mid-second backup -- it reads 301GB available. So it seems like it's copying everything on my computer twice...

  • Always On New Availability Group - Full backup is required

Just trying to create a New Availability Group for AlwaysOn , I see the database is listed, in the status it says: "Full backup is Required. The database is AdventureWorks2012, i have taken a full backup, but still see the message. I did an attach

Created a test db and did a full backup, this shows up ok as "meets prerequisites". Just curious what wrong with the AdventureWorks2012 db from MS.
    Ranga

    Hi Ranga,
After setting a database to full recovery mode, a full backup is required to initiate the full-recovery log chain.
I think AdventureWorks2012 is a normal database the same as the test database you created. You could try it again.

  • Time Machine making full backups--not incremental

    Hi,
I just installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro a couple of days ago, and have been using Time Machine to make backups (never used it before now). I have TimeMachineEditor installed, and have it set to make a backup daily at 3:30am. It backs up data from my 500GB main hard drive to another internal 500GB hard drive.
The first backup went without a hitch, and did a full backup as expected (everything). But the second, third, and fourth backups all were full backups as well....not incremental as they should've been. The fourth one was actually a manual backup I did to test it...I chose "Back Up Now" to see if it did full or incremental. It did a full backup.
So, after four backups, each a little over 100GB, I'm already running out of space Has anyone else run into this behaviour? Is this a consequence of TimeMachineEditor having screwed it up somehow? Even if it has, shouldn't a manual backup still do an incremental backup?
    Very strange....

lol...well, seeing as how you'll clearly be here a while then... ...perhaps I can prevail upon you to answer one last question that just occurred to me.
Let's say I have tons of TM snapshots on my backup drive, and at some point I want to delete a few to clear some space. I know TM automatically goes after the earliest ones when the drive fills up,
You should know that TM also constantly thins recent backups. It keeps hourly backups for 24 hours and then deletes all but one for every day; it keeps daily backups for 30 days and then deletes all but one for every week. it keeps all weekly backups till the TM drive gets full at which point it starts deleting the oldest ones.
but let's say I manually want to delete a few snapshots that contain, say, a massive cache file or something totally useless to keep around, which I could afford to delete and would gain me a lot more drive space.
When I go into the TM interface to do the removal, how can I figure out which snapshots to get rid of? How would you do it?
TM offers two options. you can delete an entire backup corresponding to a time point or it can delete all backups of a given file/folder. to do that enter TM and scroll back in time to some time point. select something and click on the "gears" action button in Finder toolbar. you'll see options "delete backup" (deletes the entire backup for that time point), and 'delete all backups of this item". deletes all backups of the selected item from all time points. I use the latter sometimes to get rid of backups of very large files.

  • Can I do full backups in different dates?

I'd like to know, if I do a full backup for an example on monday, and then I want to do a full backup on friday but letting the Monday's backup unchanged!
Or if I restore an older backup it will "INCLUDE" or "SUBSTITUTE" the data of my iPhone?
    Examples:
I do a backup Monday, having 33 iMessages... then I don't do any backup!
On friday I sent and received more 10 iMessages... and I do a full backup again (If it's possible, of course).
If I restore Monday's backup it will do a total of 43 iMessages, or the old backup will substitute all the data from the iPhone?
I want to do that with Game Progress, I want to remove a game, but later I want to continue playing it, but I'm afraid if I backup my iPhone without the app there, it will replace my app's data.

The current backup being used is updated with each backup - a new backup is not created each day or each time the iPhone is backed up.

  • Time Machine Does Excessive Full Backups

Time Machine used to just backup changed material on a hourly basis. It seems that recently every time I look at the progress indicator it is trying to do a full backup of my entire hard drive. Any ideas why?

Have you recently done a restore?
I have the same problem. I did a full restore, and TM did a full backup afterwards. This is a "documented feature". Then it did skims every hour. However, if I reboot, it does a full backup the first time after the reboot. It's done 5 full backups (50 GB each) in the past 5 days. I can't afford to shut down my Mac until I figure this out. I only have 170GB of free space on my Time Machine drive.
Is there any way to see how big each backup is, and delete un-needed ones?
I'd really like to figure out what causes this problem, before Time Machine starts deleting old stuff I want backed up to make room for all these wasteful new backups.

    John,
I run the "connect missing files" app and it gives me a blank list

  • 1,000 pictures from iPhone 5s now missing on my iPhone6, despite a full backup/restore prior.

I have just migrated from an iPhone 5s (iOS7) to an iPhone 6.
I did a full backup of the 5s to iCloud.
When I started the iPhone 6 I did a restore from the iPhone 5s iCloud backup.
I understand that there is no actual 'Camera Roll' on the iPhone 6 but the iPhone 5s had the following folders:
    Camera Roll           1,401 pictures
    My Photo Stream      999 pictures
    Panoramas               1 picture
    Videos                         13 videos
    Instagram                    217
I would expect all of this content to be backed up and transferred when I restore.
This same problem happened when I went for 4 to 5 and I let it go but this time I'm not prepared to live with it.
I can just about live with the silly decision to remove the Camera Roll with no explanation or better function but not with losing 70% of my pics.
    Hopefully theres a simple explanation!

    wacbert wrote:
That's a wake up call on photostream, and I'm sure there's a lot of users in the same boat, they should be clearer about that.
The photostream limits are clearly explained, 1000 photos, 30 days. It has always been that way.
    wacbert wrote:

Photostream is present in IOS8, same functions, same limits.
iCloud backups from an IOS device do not include photos.
Your iOS device backup only includes data and settings stored on your device. It doesn’t include data already stored in iCloud, for example contacts, calendars, bookmarks, mail messages, notes, shared photo streams, My Photo Stream, and documents you save in iCloud using iOS apps and Mac apps.

  • How to do full backups of iphone and iPad

i have a iphone 4 and a ipad mini, and i did a "full backup" as itunes called it before i installed 6.1 and i read on the internet that its good to do a restore install of a IOS if things have been running not so great, so i installed 6.1 and restored my "full backup" yet all my apps were gone.
Is there anyway to actually do a full backup apps and all so i can restore everything without having to reinstall my apps manually?

The backup that itunes performs does not include any itunes content.
You should be importing any purchases made on your idevice to your computer regularly.  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You should be syncing contacts/calendars/notes regularly.
You should be importing all pics taken with the device regularly as you would with any digital camera.

The backup does not contain the apps or music. Those have to be synced back to the device after the restore. It is all part of the process, unless you stopped it before it was complete.
