TM Disk not showing up in Migration Assistant

Hey guys,
So I have a 1 Tb Lacie harddrive that has 3 partitions. 1 small one for windows transfers, 1 mac formatted disk and 1 dedicated to Time Machine.
I back up everything except the Movies and Downloads folders.
I have a new imac at my disposal and wanted to use Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my macbook using the Time Machine backup. I attach the drive to the imac, all 3 partitions mount. I start up MA but when selecting which drive to use the backup from I can't selected any of the attached drives as they do not show up as options. All I see is the HD of the iMac itself (with 0 Kbs size).
I tried repairing the disk but that didn't help. What could be the problem? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all,
Rob

AFAIK, you can only do that on the new machine's first boot. Boot with the install disc that came with the iMac, erase it's HD with Disk Utility, and then restore the machine. Details are described by launching the Installation Instructions.app inside the installer's Installation folder. Then, hook up the ext HD, and on first boot, restore from the TM backup.

  • Time Machine disk not showing up in Migration Assistant

I have backed up my Snow Leopard with Time Machine and I'm trying to import my stuff into Lion using Migration Assistant. However, my Time Machine disk is not showing up in Migration Assistant even though it's connected and shows in Finder. Any idea why?

I couldn't migrate from Snow Leopard drive either -- Snow Leopard used PGP encyption, migration copied the files, but they seem inaccessible to Lion with "permission denied" errors.
It sounds like you did migrate successfully. It's normal for the permissions to be wrong -- Migration Assistant creates a new account with the files from the old one.
What I would do in your place is start over. First, decrypt the SL volume and uninstall PGP. You should do that anyway, because PGP is a turkey and not needed in Lion. Erase the Lion volume (assuming you have no data on it that isn't already on your SL volume), reinstall Lion, and then use Setup Assistant, not Migration Assistant, to do the migration.

  • Migrated user not showing up after migration assistant.

I had to reformat my hardrive on iMac. When I did I installed Mountain Lion instead of Lion which was on it previously. I migrated all files/user id from Time Machine using the Migration Assistant. But now I can't see my old user at login or in User's and Groups. The files are there but I can't access them without being able to login or at least give my new user permission.
How can I get to the old user?
I enabled Root User and there seems to be an "unknown user". After this an option to log into "other" user came up at log in, but my attempts at a password and name to log in failed. This "other" user and the "unknown user" are NOT showing in Users and Groups.
    Please help!

We don't recommend to use Migration Assistant because it sometimes fails, like in this case.
If you don't want problems, go with the long way: erase the drive, reinstall OS X and restore the backup during Setup Assistant:
    1. Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start up into Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar (or your OS X partition), go to Erase tab and erase the drive.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
    4. When the installation finishes, Setup Assistant will show up, so follow its steps. It will ask you to restore data from a backup or another backup, so plug your Time Machine backup to the Mac (or a Mac) and follow the steps. The only user will contain the transferred data.

  • Backups.backupdb is not showing up in Migration Assistant

I have my external disk with my time machine backups attached to my iMac, I can browse the disk and see the time machine backups for my iMac and my laptop:
    * Backups.backupdb  (This is my iMac backup)
    * MacBookAir (This is my laptop backup - but it's in a dmg format)
I've just erasd my iMac disk as I want a fresh install - but I want to migrate my settings, however when I run Migration Assistant, Backups.backupdb doesn't show up as an option. The only option is the MacBookAir backup.
Any ideas how I can get the Backups.backupdb to show up as an option to restore from?
    Thanks

Mail not working after using migration assistant - what am I missing?

The mailbox list is divided into categories with headings in caps, such as ON MY MAC. When you hover the cursor over one of those headings (except for MAILBOXES), you should see the word Show or Hide on the right. Click Show. The  MAILBOXES category can't be hidden.
In each category, the mailboxes are arranged in groups, such as Inbox. To the left of each group is a small disclosure triangle. If the triangle points to the right, click it so that it points down.

  • Time Machine - Browse other Time Machine disk - not showing all files

I have an Xserve, running 10.6 server, where we keep all of our files. It backs up via Time Machine. Many users use the shared drives on the Xserve, and I encourage them to put their files there. We work in a design / production house, so many people collaborate on files. Due to the nature of the business, with frequent design changes, we need to go "back in time" and pull out previous versions of designs, etc. Usually I handle this by remotely accessing the Xserve, starting up time machine, and pulling out the old versions of files from the backups.
However, when I'm not in, I wanted to make this option available to another user, without giving her full access to the server. I discovered the "Browse Other Time Machine" option, and after making my Time Machine disk (actually a rack-mount Mercury Pro RAID array) shared, I was able to mount it on her Mac, also running 10.6. I thought this would be a nice solution.
The problem is, in some directories, when browsing from her computer, Time machine is showing no backups. It's impossible to go back more than a few snapshots with it. Meanwhile, if I do it on the server, everything is fine. So I thought perhaps it was a permissions issue, but I don't want to muck up the permissions on my time machine drive and risk losing everything. I did add her account as a user with read-only access to the time machine drive, and told it to apply to all sub folders. This didn't make any difference.
What is the issue? Is it permissions? Or is my Time Machine too large (6TB) that it can't load all the data over the network? Has anyone encountered this before? What is the best way to troubleshoot?

  • External Time Machine disk not showing up

    Hi there.
Today, when I connected my external Western Digital My Passport disk, that's also my Time Machine backup, it didn't show up in Finder.
I haven't done like unplugging it without ejecting. By the way, even if the hard drive doesn't show up in Finder, it is recognized by Disk Utility, that's asking me to repair it. If I try to repair it, the process gets stuck.
I tried to do two actions:
    1) opening Time Machine and trying to understand if the hard disk is recognized. And the answer is YES, and I can also recover backups! Unfortunately, I stored some files (my entire iTunes library) on it not as backups.
    2) trying to use an external software like DriveGenius. It recognizes it, but it can't repair (and it doesn't showing up in the repairable devices).
    So,
what can I do? I can't lose that files!
    Thanks in advance

  • HT204350 USB Time Machine backup drive not visble in Mavericks Migration Assistant

    Hi all,
Yesterday I updated my dad's iMac from Snow Leopard (SL) to Mavericks. Seemed to work ok apart from the fact that turning on iCloud wiped out the calendars. In order to get the calendars back I restored from the most recent SL Time Machine backup. This turned out to be a big mistake! It did get the calendars back but stopped all programs not included in the OS X install to stop working!
I then managed to get a bootable flash drive installer for Mavericks sorted out and installed a fresh copy of Mavericks on the computer with the plan of using Migration Assistant to bring all my dad's files, settings, etc over. The problem is that when I open Migration Assistant and try to migrate from the USB Time Machine backup drive, the drive doesn't show up in the list.
I have also tried restoring from the Time Machine backups that were made straight after the upgrade to Mavericks as I have exported copies of the calendars now and that was the only issue at the time but when I do that the restore fails after about 4.5% progress.
Any help would be amazing as my dad runs two small businesses with the computer and the down time causing quite a few issues.
    Thanksin advance!

If you synchronize any of your calendars with a server such as iCloud, disable that synchronization. Quit Calendar.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Enter Time Machine and restore that folder from the snapshot you want.
Relaunch Calendar and test. Your calendars should be as they were when the snapshot was taken. If you don't sync with a server, stop here. If you do sync some of the calendars with a server, select each one in turn and then select
    File ▹ Export ▹ Export…
from the menu bar. You'll get ICS files with the filename extension ".ics". Re-enable sync. Usually, all the calendars you just restored will be deleted. That's not a problem. Create a new calendar on the server for each one you exported and want to sync:
    File ▹ New Calendar
Then import the calendar from the corresponding ICS file by double-clicking it. Follow the prompts to import the new events to the calendar you just created. For calendars that you don't want to sync, just import them again. They'll appear in the calendar list under On My Mac.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • External Hard Disk not showing up on Finder

    Hi
My HP Pocket Media Drive (USB), when plugged into my MacBook, does not show up on the Finder, even though it shows up on System Profiler. It only shows up on Disk Utility in certain occasions (such as after shutting down and starting up again). I have checked my Finder preferences, that external hard drives are shown on desktop.
I have tried resetting my PRAM and SMC too, but I still can't access the hard disk.
    Any help will be appreciated.

On the chance that your Mac has a phantom folder in its Volumes folder, with that external drive not mounted, invoke the Finder menu option Go > Go to Folder. Enter "/Volumes" (without the quotes) in the field and click "Go". In the resulting window if you see anything with a name that resembles your external drive, trash it.
Anyone know how I can have the external hard disk automatically mount onto my desktop (and thereby bypass the need for several click-thru’s via the finder window)?
Once you're able to mount that external drive, open the Accounts panel of System Preferences and click on the lock in the corner to authenticate if needed. Select your account on the left, then the "Login Items" tab. Drag the mounted disk icon into the window then close System Preferences. That disk should now mount when you log in. A Finder window will open, but you can close that manually. If that bothers you sufficiently, if you search these discussion groups you may be able to find threads that discuss how to work around that.

  • Shared disk not showing up in Finder

I'm sharing a disk drive on a Mac Mini. I can see it listed and access it on from one laptop, but it's no longer visible from my MacBook Pro. It was there yesterday, but I went on standby with it still connected, and there were messages about it being improperly dismounted, and now I can no longer see it. I've rebooted the Mac Mini and the MacBook Pro, but it just does not show up. Any ideas?

Not sure what has changed but I just noticed it is now showing my PC on both the iMac and Macbook. I just finished installing Ubuntu on a separate partition and when I booted back into Vista it worked...maybe it got scared I was gonna stay in Ubuntu

  • Resource ( Room ) not showing up under Scheduling Assistant as an Attendee ?

    Hi All
Hope someone can guide me here with two wierd issues I'm having, maybe something I'm not getting it.
    Problem 1 :
    Client = Outlook 2010, Server = Exchange 2010
A users (the organizer of a meeting) can see the resource she is booking as an attendee under her own scheduling assistant, but if you open the appointment in the calendar of the resource itself, and you check the Scheduling Assistant, the room
( itself ) does not show up as an attendee.
However - if you book the appointment from the resource calendar - the resource shows up as an attendee for all those invited.
    Problem 2 :
Referring to Problem 1 - One of the attendees accepts the meeting request and the user sees the acceptance message arrive in her mailbox, however - when she checks the tracking status - it shows the response as "none" ?. The auto acceptance by the resource
    shows "Accepted" which is correct.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
In Exchange 2010, you can use
Get-CalendarProcessing –Identity <roommailbox> command to the status of the ‘AutoProcessing’ parameter. The default setting is AutoUpdate, whilst the other available option is None. The setting of AutoUpdate means that
the Calendar Attendant is used on the resource mailbox, which itself means that new meeting requests will be marked as tentative on the resource mailbox calendar.
To make the organizer get the notification of accept, you can use the following command to configure:
    Set-CalendarProcessing –Identity <roommailbox> –AutomateProcessing AutoAccept
    Hope it helps.

  • Password not working after using Migration Assistant

Recycled my MacBook to my wife after reinstalling the OS so that it was a fresh machine. However, she wanted to have family photos /videos  on this machine so she has them locally if she takes machine out of house. So, I used Migration Assistant to transfer these from my mini-mac to the MacBook. Of course this meant I then became a named user the MacBook and the Photos/videos were transferred successfully over to my account.
When I log into the MacBook using the newly created account for my wife I of course cannot see the files transferred over in her directory but when I use Finder I can view the Users and can see the files have been transferred into my directory.
If I log out of my wife's acount and try to login to my account my password fails. Pretty sure I'm entering the correct password and the hint comes up with what looks like a valid hint. Can't be 100% sure as have so many passwords but irrespective if also states in the hint message that I can use my Apple ID to reset this passwordh which is what I'd lke to do to avoid confusion
Going back to the mini-mac I've gone to the Apple ID site (so my password to acccess this works) but cannot see how this allows me to reset a passord for a device.
Too be honest I thought the password for MacBook was my Apple ID Password but clearly not as it works to get access to manage my Apple ID
Hopefully I've explained in enough detail but let mw know if more needed

FIxed it myself. Logged in as wife went to System Prefs > Security and managed to change my passwrod from there. Seems a bit strange but hey it worked
