TM drive doesn't always mount on iMac startup

Hi,
TM seems to work well most of the time. Once in a great while though, TM drive doesn't mount on iMac startup, and if I don't notice the missing icon on the desktop, backups don't happen.
TM drive is a Seagate Free Agent USB 500G. It's connected directly, not through a hub. The drive has no power switch, so I leave it alone -- out of sight, out of mind.
Two questions:
1. Is is something that I am doing or the way I'm set up that causes this infrequent failure?
2. When I notice the missing connection, what's the best way to get the TM drive reconnected? What I do now to reconnect is: shut down the computer, pull the power plug on the TM drive, restart the computer, plug the drive back in.
Your thoughts appreciated.
Jerry

My understanding is that the disk doesn't mount, ie not visible to the system. In that event I can't see that changing Time Machine's disk allocation will achieve anything. It's a hardware initialisation issue.
If the disk isn't mounted (personally I'd check System Profiler to be absolutely sure) then there can't be any transfers going on so you should be safe to just unplug, pause to let the electronics settle and then plug back in. If that works, and the problem is rare, that might be the best way to go, although it might be that there is some problem with the drive which is not good if you are relying on it for back up. I don't know enough about hard drives to comment on that aspect (maybe it's just a driver issue?).

  • External drive does not always mount?

I have a 1 terrabyte Lacie external FW drive that does not always mount. Are there any issues with Tiger recognizing such a large drive? Is there anything I can do to make it mount better?

hello and welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might try using Disk Utility, (Applications/Utilities) and see if the Lacie mounts in the panel on the left under MacintoshHD. If it does mount, you can try to repair it using Disk Utility.
Are you sure you have your Finder preferences set correctly? Click a clear area on your Desktop then in the Menu click Finder>Preferences. Under, "Show These Items" on the Desktop, make sure you have first three boxes checked.
Also, run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions. That can fix a myriad of bugs.

  • TM drive does not always mount when reconnected

Forgive me if this has been covered, but I could not find it in the archive.
I am using a Fantom 500GB drive for backup from my laptop. Every few days, when I reconnect the drive, it will not mount and backups will not happen. The drive is both Firewire and USB - I generally use Firewire. I have tried repowering the drive, unplugging and reconnecting in all the various permutations, and the drive will not mount. The two things that will make it mount are 1) reboot the computer, or 2) connect the USB cable (although, the Firewire will still not work until after a reboot). Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Andy

    Andy,
I was just reading some reviews on Newegg dot com for the Fantom Titanium-II TFD500U16 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache USB 2.0 External Hard Drive which I presume is the one you have purchased. There are a lot of negative reviews which suggests that it should be avoided. Read them for yourself.
You get what you pay for and for my hard earn dollar I would be wanting a reliable interface and a reliable mechanism. Seems to me that one or both of those are not up to scratch in your case. There are a lot of good quality Firewire/USB devices on the market such as those from OWC aka Other World Computing. Spend the dollars and buy quality and you wont regret it. You have the best computer on the market with the best OS so pamper it a bit.
    Cheers

  • External Lacie D2 Quadro Drive will no longer mount on iMac.

    Hi all,
I'm running an Intel iMac on Snow Leopard, maybe 18 months old.
I've had my Lacie drive (D2 Quadro) for maybe 3 years or so and it has never once caused me any problems.
Lastnight, I accidentally didn't eject the Lacie drive properly before connecting it to my Powerbook.
Since then, the Lacie drive shows up fine on my Powerbook and all files and folders are present, but when I plug it back into my iMac it doesn't mount anymore - the iMac won't recognise it.
I've tried the following to fix the problem:
    - tried and tested both Fire-wire ports (both fine)
    - tried to disk repair via Disk Utility but the drive is greyed out so won't allow me to verify or repair.
    - Ran Disk Utility via Snow Leopard disc on startup, but it's also greyed out.
    - Ran Disk Utility by connecting Lacie to Powerbook instead. It verifies and repairs it, saying everything is fine - still won't show on iMac.
    - Left the drive unplugged (power and fire-wires) overnight. Plugged in this morning and it's still the same.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Cheers,

OK, Let's wait until you get the chance to do the SMC reset then we can try some other steps. The following instructions will be in the SMC reset instructions I sent earlier but I wanted to point them out because the instructions does cover multiple Mac models and some have different processes.
    1. Shut down the computer. Make sure you quit all applications prior to shutting down.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    4. Release the power button.
    5. Attach the computers power cable.
    6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Lacie external hard drive suddenly won't mount on iMac 27"

Help! My back up Lacie suddenly won't mount. It shows up on my disk utility (but faded) and I tried to repair it with no benefit. I thought it might be a Lion problem, but my other Lacie is working fine. I tried using a different USB cable and unplugging everything, rebooting etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

There may be hardware problem with the drive. However you can try resetting the SMC. Don't be afraid to reset it 2-3x if the first time doesn't work.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External backup drive doesn't show in System Preferences/Startup Disk

Using SuperDuper!, I thought I created a bootable backup on my LaCie FW 200GB ext. HD. I opened System Preferences/Startup Disk to try booting from the LaCie by changing the Startup Disk to the LaCie. The LaCie didn't appear, there. My Mac HD is there, and a Network Startup icon with a question mark in it, is there. I'm on a standalone machine. My Ethernet port is used for a cable modem.
I Restarted and held down the Option key to see if the LaCie would show up that way. No luck. The LaCie is mounted on my desktop, and the System Profiler shows it on the FW bus. So, I don't really have a bootable backup drive (or volume). The LaCie is not partitioned, nor is my internal startup disk.
I did use Disk Utility & found I had to repair the LaCie. Initially, DU said the disk couldn't be repaired, but on a repeat, the LaCie shows as repaired.
How can I get the LaCie to show up in System Preferences/Startup Disk?

Select the external drive's icon and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the pane labeled "Ownership and Permissions click on the small triangle gadget beside the word Details. You should see at the bottom a box labeled "Ignore permissions on this volume." If there's a checkmark in the box uncheck it. Close the Get Info window. Now see if the drive appears in the Startup Disk preference.
If you still have a problem then you might try the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Next clone your system to the external drive:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Set Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only.
    2. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    3. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    4. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    5. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    6. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    7. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    8. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • What do i do when external optical drive doesn't show up in finder?  how can i import software, music, etc. when the drive isn't recognized/mounted/whatever?

the internal optical drive on my early 2006 20"imac has mechanical problems ejecting discs.  i've gone thru all the recommended steps to eject discs, and have luckily been able to eject the last 3 discs but only after spending 30-60 minutes going thru all of the steps over and over, and today just trying "eject disc" in itunes since i had itunes open.  i don't want to put another disc in - the drive clearly has problems with the mechanical eject mechanism, and from what i've read that's not unique to my computer.
i bought an external optical drive: lite on, clamshell design to avoid problems with the eject mechanism; i contacted the mfr who said it's mac compatible.
the drive plays dvds, which is all i've tried so far, but doesn't show up in finder.  so i don't know how to use it to load software, or music, or anything besides watch dvds.
is there something i can do to get the drive recognized/mounted/whatever?  i would prefer to not spend the $220 which was quoted to me by an authorized mac repair company, even tho i think that's probably a reasonable cost given the delicacy of the operation as shown on ifixit.com.
    thanks!

I have an external LaCie burner and it will not show up on my Mac unless I insert a CD or DVD - in that case, the media will show up (I have these settings in the Pref Pane):
If you want to burn files or music to blank media, you can use Finder or Disk Utility for files, but should use an iTunes playlist/iTunes for music and a movie burn app for videos/movies (such as iDVD, Roxio Toast, Burn, etc).
If you simply want to drag files over as a backup, an external hard drive is a much better solution than a burner.

  • External Hard Drive Doesn't Mount on Desktop through FireWire 400

I have an external hard drive that mounts on the desktop when connecting to my iMac via USB, but it fails to appear on the desktop when connecting via FireWire 400. It was glitchy in Tiger as well, and had problems since installing Leopard. I was able to get it to work once, after using Leopard Cache Cleaner (a 3rd party program), disconnecting the hard drive, and unplugging the iMac. I moved my computer this week, and had to unplug it and when I powered it back up, the hard drive doesn't appear on the desktop again through FireWire 400 (still works fine with USB). It also doesn't appear in Disk Utility through FireWire.
What good are FireWire if they fail to recognize a hard drive so often?!

upgrade to latest system, that computer will accept, then try again

  • Hard Drive Wouldn't Mount on iMac (late 2013)

Just wanted to drop a line here in case anyone else was having the same problem and perhaps to get an explanation from someone as to specifically why this is the case as it is disappointing/strange.
In short: I got a Seagate Expansion desktop external hard drive (2 TB).  Unpacked it, plugged it into my early 2014 iMac (3.5 GHz i7/Build 13E28 running 10.9.4) and.....nothing.  Switched out cables.  Nothing.  Switched ports.  Nothing.  The drive was initializing, steady light, and you could hear it and feel it running but it not only didn't mount you could see nothing at all in Disk Utility.
Assuming something was wrong with the drive, I went and plugged it into my old trust 2009 Macbook Pro (still running strong!) and the drive this time flashed a few times and then instantly mounted.  The 2009 MBP is also running 10.9.4 so Mavericks is not to blame here.  Perplexed, I formatted it (Mac OS Extended), went back to the iMac and still.....nothing.  Steady light (but not the blink), can hear the drive going but not showing up.
Went to this forum, found a bunch of posts blaming Seagate USB 3 connections, enclosures, and everything under the sun.  Tried a few things but nothing.  Seemed to me that because of the initial blinking that happened when I plugged it into the MBP that it was a power issue, the iMac is not giving its ports enough juice.  Found a USB repeater extension, plugged it in with that- voila.  It shows up.
So it appears the iMac is not giving enough power to its USB ports.  Strangely I never noticed this before because its never been a problem- I have other Seagate drives (also USB 3 and also plug in powered as this trouble device is) that have always worked fine.
Does anyone have an explanation?  Just curious and if there are specs that I have to look out for on drives to avoid it would be good to know.  Many thanks,
    E

Thank you for the reply, Eric.  Here's screen shots from within Disk Utility and "info" on the Internal Drive (that is not mounting)

  • Hard drive doesn't mount on Macbook Pro with Mavericks

    Hello,
I have installed Mavericks on my Macbook Pro.
I was working on a doc file on Open Office when the computer froze.
Had to hard shut it down and when I turned it back on I got a screen with Disk utility menu proposing to restaure or to reinstall Mavericks. When I choose the second option it tells me that the hard drive is locked.
Took it of the computer and tried to access it from another one but it doesn't even mount. When I go to disk utility I only see the hidden partition and not the main one.
Any idea how to retrieve my data?
    Many thanks.

Just how did you map to this drive in "drive window?" I can see the drive in a window I open when clicking on "TimeCapsule" in the navigation pane for the "TimeCapsule." [Follow?] I can even save a file to the hard drive in the TimCapsule, but my backups continue to fail with the message that the drive image cannot be created.
I've even tried erasing the hard drive using the AirPort utility (just updated the software). I can fast erase, but the full erase works forever without advancing the progress bar.
I think I have a hard dribe problem.

  • IMac keyboard doesn't always work properly and Magic Mouse battery drain

Owned my iMac for a few months now. First off, my batterys only lasted 23 days, not 3 months like stated by Apple. I've use both Duracell and Energizer and both last less than a month. Secondly, my wireless keyboard doesn't always function properly. When I'm trying to type something out, I always end up having to go back and add something that the keyboard has missed..
For example, I just tested my Cap Locks key. I pressed it 10 times normally as you would when typing and the green LED only lit for 3 of the 10.
But when I press hard it works everytime
Is this a common problem or have I been sent out a defective pack?
    Thanks

It's a long shot, but is a non-standard input selected here:
     > System Preferences > Language & Text
Try selecting 'British' and see if the problem persists. Also, if you click on the little nationality flag in the menubar at the top of the screen and choose 'Show Keyboard Viewer', what happens when you press the '3' key? Does it light up as expected?

  • Flash drive won't mount on iMac but mounts on all other computers

I have two new PNY 8GB flash drives and both work on a Windows 7 laptop and two different Macbook Pro computers.  One Macbook is running 10.6 and the other is running 10.7.  Two other flash drives work just fine on the iMac but these PNY sticks do not.
I have restarted the iMac with and without the sticks plugged in.
I have tried all USB ports.
I have tried Disk Utility but I do not see anything on the left.
I have look in /Volumes and I don't see the USB stick.
What am I missing?  Why won't it work on the iMac but works on the Macbooks?

My other USB memory sticks, an iPhone, and two iPods work normally plugged into the USB connectors on the iMac.  It is just this one brand of USB sticks that don't work on the iMac BUT the same sticks work on two different MacBook Pro computers and even a Windows 7 computer.
