TM Drive no icon and won't mount/unmount

I have a Glyph GT050Q firewire drive that I'm using as a Time Machine backup drive. I used to have a time capsule but it died suddenly (like others have complained about). Anyway I decided to abandon Time Capsule.
The drive is attached directly to the MacBook Pro.
It works as a backup drive fine, it's just that Time Machine doesn't mount/unmount the drive and when it's being used for backup it doesn't get the custom Time Machine backup drive blue icon.
Is there a way to get this to work? It didn't work under OS 10.5 and I was sure when I upgraded to OX 10.6 that it would fix itself, but no luck.
By the way I've already tried trashing the TimeMachine.plist, that didn't do anything.
Is it only the Time Capsule that can mount/unmount? It's not the biggest of deals to have it on the desktop all day except that the system and certain applications periodically scan all drives which prevents the drive from sleeping. I have Time Machine Editor v 2.5.3 set to backup up every 6 hours.
Thanks

You might qualify for a free replacement. Check this out: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3351

That's correct; Time Machine doesn't mount and dismount directly-connected drives the way it does network drives. And it should have a green icon.

That shouldn't be a problem. HDs are built to run 24/7.

That's usually not a good idea, if you can avoid it. Local backups should be much faster than network, and won't be contending for your network connection. See #13 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Video thumbs became icons and won't play in preview of Bridge

I started a new project in Premiere Pro 6.  I'm not sure if it is relevant, but one thing I did differently on a new project was change the DV to HDV, the only time I've done that.
Then when I was importing by dragging from CS6 Bridge a bunch of videos, it looked like they were disappearing, or being moved instead of copied, so I terminated and started over.  But after that some thumbnails switched icons and won't play in CS6 preview, though they do when clicked to open in media player.
I think when I finished the video and was starting to export, that a window came up and said dynamic link fail or something.  I'd never seen before. Back in CS6, I went to a backup disk and copied the video files that here had thumbs, and copied to the folder with the icons.  They had the same number code, but had text in front on the originals.  Once I compared to make sure all thumbs and icons were represented, I deleted the icons, and then renamed the thumbs according to my current naming system, so they were just like the replaced ones.
I had exported to queue, and now ran the queue.  I got the dynamic link error again, and when I looked back in CS6, the replaced thumbs had become icons like before.  Since I still had the window with the other backup disk open, I copied those.  But this time, even though they lacked the text in front of them, they arrived as icons instead of thumbs also. I thinkperhaps it is because PP can recognize that they are the same files even though they have different name.  Because when I have changed the names of files that are already in a video sequence, and PP asks where the file is, and I indicate the file, it accepts it with the new name, though the old one still shows in the sequence, and doesn't need to be redone when reopened.
The icons, when in PP do play as normal and the export went normally.  But  the icons won't play in the Bridge preview, and now it seems I can't get back thumbs at all.

  • My I-Phone 4 is stuck on the apple icon and won't do anything. Help please

Help, My I-Phone 4 is a little over a year old. I have never dropped it nor does it have water damage. I downloaded the new update IOS 7.4 and the next morning my phone was stuck on the apple icon and won't turn on. It's also showing a low battery after charging it all night. Please does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

        LauraAnn41,
Help is our middle name! So let's jump into troubleshooting right away. Have you tried holding the power button and home key simultaneously for up to 30 seconds as an alternate reset? Please give that a shot and let us know how it goes.

Try a reset and the iPad should restart (you can then try turning it off again) : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • External Firewire drives power up, but won't mount.

I wanted to see if anyone else is having this problem. I recently upgraded my mom's laptop to OSX Lion after she experienced a lot of problems with Snow Leopard. All updates available from Software Update have been installed. Now 2 issues have arisen after the new install: 1) the FW 800 and 400 ports appear to be non-functional, and 2) the OS takes about 10 minutes to boot up to the desktop.
    1) Regarding the FW ports: I have a couple external Firewire 800 hard drives that I use on other Macs so I know they're fully operational and mount without any issues. They're both 5400RPM drives that have been inserted into Macally external enclosures, and are of different capacities - one is 320GB and the other is 500GB. The enclosures offer FW 800, 400, USB 2.0 and mini-USB connectivity. But after upgrading the laptop I mentioned, neither of the drives will mount when using the FW 800 or 400 cables. They power up but won't mount, and they don't show up in the list in Disk Utility. However, the drives will power up and mount via USB.
I realize the laptop may have a hardware/port problem - but both 800 and 400 ports? Seems unlikely.
    2) Any idea why it's taking the OS 10 minutes to boot up? I've shut down the laptop and rebooted it twice since the OS install, and both times took 10 minutes.
I may just install Lion on one of the hard drives, pull it and then pop it into the laptop to see if that makes any difference. Before I do that, can anyone recommend a hardware utility that can check the ports?
    I welcome your suggestions.
    Thank you.

  • PLEASE HELP: My "Mail" Has the "Beach Ball" icon and won't ever load...

My mail on my iMac with newest extension of Leopard is unable to load. The mail app opens and then it starts "thinking" and I wait and wait and nothing happens.
I have a gmail IMAP account and a POP3 microsoft exchange account in my Apple Mail account on my iMac. The emails work fine on my iPhone and when I directly connect to them. However, the Mail app on my iMac is what is broken. My mail had been working and as of a few days ago it is no longer working.
Someone had a similar problem posted below.
    Original Question:
    Hi all,
Today I turned on my iMac and launched Mail, which started behaving really strangely. I have a .mac mailbox, an IMAP mailbox and 3 POP mailboxes. Two of the 3 POP mailboxes have gone berserk. They whirl incessantly, but nothing happens. I opened the Activity window and see, time after time, they supposedly are downloading mail (in fact thousands of pieces of mail which is odd) but the download bar is stuck in the blue and white striped mode. Plus every time I quit and restart, they appear with the exact file being downloaded.
The other thing is these are two mail addresses with 2 totally different servers. One of them shares an account with the third POP mailbox, and that one seems to be working fine.
Perhaps Mail needs to be trashed? And reinstalled? But can you install it selectively from the OS disk? And won't it be hopelessly out of date since there have been a number of updates?
Anyone have any ideas? Many thanks for your assistance.
    MY RESPONSE:
I am having the EXACT same problem. It won't even let me delete my POP accounts.
This started happening around the same time that I got some weird "security" pop up when using Firefox; everytime I clicked on a certain link it would take me to this website telling me I needed to update my security. Not sure if these two are related.

When did you do the latest update for Leopard, and from what version did you update? Has Mail ever worked in this latest version of Leopard?
Hold down the Shift key while clicking on the Mail icon in the Dock -- does this allow Mail to open?

  • Mouse pointer hang in"hand" icon and won't select anything

This happens in Ubuntu 11.4 with Firefox 13. While in Firefox the mouse pointer gets stuck in the 'hand' icon and will not select anything anymore either in or out of Firefox. I have only fixed this with a reboot

I have encountered this a couple of times over the last few weeks, usually when I have lots of Firefox tabs open. Basically it stops all mouse functionality except the ability to move the pointer. And the pointer becomes a fist.
However, the keyboard still works and I found a short term workaround:-
    1. either a) "'''Alt+Tab'''" to a terminal that is already open, or b) use the "'''Alt+F2'''" to get a "'''Run Command'''" box
    2. type "'''killall firefox'''", and hit the enter key.
That kills Firefox and allows the rest of my system to function normally. Otherwise I have to reboot by holding down the power button for 10 seconds or so - which is very undesirable indeed.

  • Downloaded movie from iTunes is under video icon and won't play can it br moved

Bought transformers movie from iTunes it is under my videos icon when I hit play the screen stays black even though the frame looks like the movie is playing what's wrong?

Quit the video app and try again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit the app by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on the video app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the app. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Launch the video app again and see what happens.
If that doesn't work - go to the home screen again and swipe to the right to bring up the search feature. Type the name of the movie in the search field at the top. If the movie shows up in the search - tap on the icon and hopefully it will start playing. Let it play for a couple of minutes and tap done. go back to the video app and see if the movie appears there. If so you should be able to play it from there.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the iPad and launch the video app again.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • External HDD recognised but won't mount/unmount

I have a 300GB Maxtor HDD in an Icy Box enclosure which I have been using with my PC for over a year now and my Macbook for the last few months.
Lately, I have been having some really annoying issues with it. In short, the drive won't appear to mount (ie it won't show up in the sidebar in Finder or on my desktop) but seemingly it has according to Disk Utility. The drive appears in the sidebar with a 'no entry' sign on it. Trying to verify or repair it in DU results in an error message saying that the drive cannot unmount. Restarting solves nothing. The only way I have found to resolve the issue is to plug it into my PC, fire it up and then disconnect it before using it again on my Mac. This is far from ideal.
I recently installed VMWare Fusion which definitely caused this problem the first time. I shut down Fusion without 'safely disconnecting' the drive from XP and then disconnecting it from Fusion first. I understand that it may be that Fusion is still accessing a file on the drive preventing it from unmounting but I would have thought that a restart would resolve that issue - it doesn't.
I know about the 'lsof' function in Terminal but I do not know what to do after I get the results from it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • External Drives, CDs & Disk Images Won't Mount

I am having some weird issues with my G5. I recently did a fresh install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive and everything was running smoothly. I copied a bunch of settings from another drive to keep my information intact on the new install and I didn't notice any issues. I have now started to notice that after about a day of leaving the G5 on, it no longer mounts disk images, CDs or external hard drives OR if it does in fact mount them, it takes FOREVER to do so. This also causes Disk Utility and System Profiler to crash or take a long time to start.
I don't know if this helps at all, but two new hardware additions to the machine were an internal bluetooth adapter (for use with the new Magic Mouse) and more memory. Both have been working correctly so I don't know that either is the cause of this problem.
I've tried a bunch of random things to see if I can get something to work again - fixing permissions, verifying disks, etc., but the only thing that really works is a restart. Everything stops working again about a day after the restart though.
Has anyone else encountered this sort of problem, and if so, do you have any suggestions for how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated!

So I think I may have something to show from Console regarding an external drive that took forever to attach:

  • Backup file appears with a PC icon and won't open in mac os 9.2

Hi, I have a green imac powerpc at home and need to open some old files backed up on an external hard disk.
The external hard disk is fat32 and was formatted by a pc.
unfortunately the files I need appear as PC files with a blue PC icon, but I'm sure they are Ready, Set & Go files created
on mac os 9.2. Any help is appreciated.

    There is a classic discussion.

I shall try to find a friend with Tiger this weekend, hope it helps.
Fyi: The Mac OS X system needs to be Tiger or newer.
You may try this. I tried it long ago, but kind of forget the details.
Be sure to format the usb stick on  a Mac with a Mac OS file system HFS+.
Create several files with Ready, Set & Go files created.  Some empty.  Some with data. etc.
Copy these to the usb stick with a Mac Format.
Copy to a Tiger or newer system.
Create a dos formated usb stick.
Copy good files to the dos usb stick. This splits the files into a data and resource fork. This is a Tiger innovation.
Now you need to replace the data fork with the other data fork.  The data fork has the normal name.  The resource fork starts with ._
You will have to see hidden files.
    turn off hidden.
Copy the files back to to a usb HFS+ formated flash drive.  This puts the files back together.
I suggest you bring along a coy of Ready, Set & Go.  If your friend has classic installed, You can test there.  Or, bring you computer along. You may need to do this more than once.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    # Show hidden files & folders in finder
    # Just copy the the line starting with defaults into the terminal. Press return to run.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE   ;killall Finder
    # Normal display.  Hide hidden files & folders in finder
    # Just copy the the line starting with defaults into the terminal
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE  ;killall Finder
    The finder comes right back.
    See: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4070684?start=15&tstart=0
Mac OS files may contain two parts: Data & Resource. On HFS+ disks you see only one file.  On Dos disks, you see two files. One file is visible.  One is hidden. Turns out I have classic installed on my system.  The finder application contains  data & resource forks.
    # My Dos flash drive is DOS formatted
    # Previously, I copied the Classic finder to the Dos flash drive.

  • Droplet has strange icon and won't activate.

I've never had trouble creating droplets in CS3, but now every time I create one it shows up with a strange (rough-looking, jagged edged) type of icon.  If I try to drop a file on it, it won't activate. I know the action works because if I open a file manually and choose the action, it works perfectly. Any ideas?

"Nonsense" runs off your fingers and keyboard as freely and as easily as cuss words roll off a parrot's tongue, Reynolds (Mark).  Alas, nothing you type afterwards ever backs it off.
If it takes you more than two minutes to set all your Photoshop preferences that get wiped when you reset them, you are as clumsy as a manatee and you don't know the Photoshop application one tenth as well as you think you do.
In addition, if you bother to record an action while you re-set everything in Photoshop just once, the next time you can do it with a single mouse click.
There is nothing destructive or harmful in trashing an application's preferences beyond having to re-set them.  The only thing you discard is corruption.  Anyone who has not saved his/her presets before the corruption sets in is better off recreating them from scratch.
I'm beginning to feel sorry for you, fortunately you're not my responsibility.
Next time you want to argue the point, present a viable, reasonable alternative, or be prepared to be exposed again.

  • IPhone 3GS (iOS4) has iTunes/USB icon and won't even sync!

I have an iPhone 3GS. I was updating from iOS4 to iOS 4.0.1. in iTunes. At the end of the iTunes update I got a dialog box that says "iTunes has detected an Iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." Then I got the iTunes with white USB icon on the face of my iPhone! When I try to sync with iTunes it says that I need to wipe my phone!
I restarted my computer. Repaired permissions. Rebooted the iPhone several times (and still get the iTunes/USB icon), tried to sync with iTunes. It won't work. I don't want to wipe my phone.
    Help!

Try altering the tag for the ringtone: right-click on a ringtone in iTunes and select Get Info, go to the Info tab and make a slight change to the Artist, tap OK and try syncing again.  If it transfers to your phone do the same for the others.

  • Computer won't start from hard drive or CD, and won't perform system recovery.

I have an HP Pavilion g7-1314nr. Yesterday it froze and I held down the power button to turn it off. After turning it back on, it started a disk check. I turned it off during the disk check, and upon trying to boot it back up, it told me booting failed and to press CTRL-ALT-DELETE to try again. After multiple attempts, it stopped displaying this message.  Under system diagnostics, I ran a boot test, and it failed. Attempting a system recovery brings up the start-up windows logo, and then a black screen with an enlarged cursor. This morning, I inserted a recovery disk and told it to boot from internal CD/DVD drive. Like system recovery, it brings the Windows logo, and then a black screen with an enlarged cursor. My computer is incapable of booting from either the hard drive or a CD. What do I do?

    Hi @TeridaxXD001 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion g7-1314nr Notebook and issues with Windows 7 and starting up.  I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which should resolve the fan issue.
Here is a link to computer won't start for Windows 7. There is a section on getting past the HP Logo screen.
If that does not help at the end of the document it shows you to do a hardware test.
Please note remove any and all USB devices before troubleshooting. Disconnect all non-essential devices
    Hope this helps you out.
    Thanks.
