TM  failed miserably in Restore of whole system

Last night, I had a kernel panic which rendered my System disk virtually useless. Finder hung when trying to get Info on a file. Disk Utility hung when trying to Repair Permissions, etc.
So....since I have TM running, I chose to re-format my disk, then use the Restore utility on the Leopard disk. Silly me. TM reported it was restoring the whole disk, indicating the restore was of pretty much the right size, and would take approximately 3 hours. However, after about 1 hour, it reported it was done, and re-booting from the restored disk.
Long story short - it had only restored about 1/3 of the disk. When I tried to restore some key folders that were missing, it failed, saying I didn't have privileges.
I guessed that perhaps the privileges had been gunched before the time of the TM back I'd chosen to restore. So..... I used Disk Utility to Repair Privileges, then went to an earlier TM backup time, and chose restore. This time, it asked for a folder for the restore files - pointing to a completely irrelevant folder. I navigated to the volume name of the disk I was restoring to , and proceeded.
TM then created a FOLDER, naming it the same as the Volume.
Finally TM failed, with the error "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "060416_0094.NEF" (an image file) could not be read or written. (Error code -36)?
Jeesh - what kind of crappy backup program is this? It doesn't come through when it's needed, it's UI doesn't provide useful information, and apparently the data it saved was corrupt.
Am I overlooking something - does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks,
Bruce

Hi elrik, welcome to the forums,
your safest bet is probably to order a set of recovery discs from Lenovo.  Once you have the system installed you can always delete the service partition, if you want to gain the space, because you have a set of discs.  Using Windows Easy Transfer is a good method for transferring files and settings.
You can order discs, (only for WE countries listed on the site), through the following link;

  • Hi ,I barely got this from USPS ,and it's used ibook G4 ,I don't know a password from there username I couldn't even use it because it already used ?do you how to restore the whole system for iBook G4 ,without the password

Hi ?okay barley got this from USPS but it's in used ,somebody already own this ibook G4 ,I only use it for 1 min on this OS X and then when I try to go any file I have to  type in a password ,but I don't know the password ?do you how to restore everything and restart everything ,without the password?

The seller should have included a bootable OS X system DVD that would work in that computer; preferrably one that matches the OS X installed in the computer when you got it. Have you contacted the seller?
If you can find the serial number and any other model identifier of the iBook portable, you could probably get a Replacement OS X Tiger 10.4 system DVD from Apple for about $20; a white-label disc that should work in an old iBook G4. This should not be an original install-restore disc specific to the iBook, but there may be one available. (Originals shipped with a Mac were gray color and say the computer name, and those discs have a part number related to the Mac models build year, etc they shipped with.) A 'replacement' white disc should work with more than one specific series of Mac that could support the OS X.
As these computers get older and farther away from the date of manufacture, replacement discs or copies of original software kits, no longer made, are harder to come by. However the white label 'replacement' from AppleCare, may be the ticket, if you can order one and if they still have them. And, if it works.
With a system disc, you can erase and install (or secure erase, reformat, & install, then update) a system on the hard disk drive. By doing the secure erase, the Disk Utility will write a pass of zeros over the old content and that can help clear up old issues in a questionable used computer's hard disk drive, but you'd need an OS X install disc. You can call AppleCare or Apple Sales Support (not the main store or main online pages, its not a regular item) and if you are lucky, you may talk to someone who knows these exist. A few ASC discussion threads have mentioned these, and people who bought them posted pictures of the actual discs.
There are some ways to attempt to reset an admin password, usually with the install disc for OS X; but another way using Single-user mode or command-line Terminal, to go into unix and change settings at a level beneath the graphic user interface.

You'll have to search and reword for other online ideas.
If you bought the iBook from an auction, suggest they
should include the disc, since it implies a license to
have the system software installed. It is the proof.

level of security higher than Admin, near impossible.
Almost as bad as encrypting the hard drive.

  • Restoring the whole system with a wireless time machine

please can you link me to a page with step by step for this please

All available backups are shown and dated. Select your most recent backup.

  • Can Time Machine Restore the whole operating system ?

    Hi there,
I understand Time Machine can be used to locate files which were accidentally deleted.
But can it restore the whole OS system together with all the settings to say a 2 weeks ago ?
If can, I desperately beg someone to be kind enough to guide & teach me how to do it step by step.
    Many thanks

I am doing a full restore on the same Mac. For avoidance of doubt, can you kindly confirm that the first paragraph of item#14 does not apply to me ?
Yup. This works fine if it's the same Mac. That's what it's intended for.
    Question 2:
I have a Lacie Firewire800 external HDD connected to my Mac, I have already updated & backup data on this Lacie FW800 HDD to yesterday.
As I intend to restore the entire system to 2 weeks ago, I am afraid that my Lacie would also be restored to 2 weeks ago, would it ?
When you say "entire system", it refers only to the Mac internal harddrive or everything connected to it ?
Ah, yes, that's a bit misleading. That procedure will restore your internal HD only. By "entire system," it really means everything on your internal HD (which is all most users have): OSX, apps, configuration, users, settings, preferences, data.
If you want to restore an external HD, you must do that separately, so your LaCie won't be touched. Just to be extra-safe, I'd eject and disconnect it if I were you.

  • ITunes causing whole system to freeze?

    Hi
There are a lot of questions on this forum which are similar to this, but I have not found one that actually replicates the same problem in the same conditions.
Today I was listening to iTunes and had a bunch of other applications open. For no apparent reason, the whole system froze up on me. By this I mean: the mouse no longer responds, keyboard no longer responds, the colon that flashes the seconds in the clock stops flashing (I have that turned on so that I can see when the machine is really frozen), and all the keyboard-shortcuts like Option-Command-Esc (Forced Quit dialog) or Ctrl-Eject fail to work. Even the Ctrl-Command-Power doesn't work (for forced Restart): instead I have to hold the power button for a few seconds and the computer shuts down, but does not restart. (This is what I mean by the 'whole system freezing'). There is no warning, no beachball spinning, and the G5 does not even seem particularly hot (the fans were not blowing hard). So I am completely at a loss to understand what's going on.
Thinking this was a one-off event, I restarted, ran a "Verify permissions" and "Repair permissions" (was this a mistake?) and ran a few applications (Mail, Safari) all of which worked fine. Then I opened iTunes again. It opened OK. I then closed the window, which worked. Then I quit iTunes. This caused the whole system to freeze again, exactly as before.
I have repeated this cycle a couple of times. iTunes will open, will even start playing a song, but on Quit the whole system freezes.
More recently I found that the system froze with iTunes just playing a song.
What then happened was that I looked for help on this forum, found too many cases of iTunes doing strange things but none with my configuration, and thought (perhaps recklessly) that I should update iTunes (from 6.0.4 to 6.0.5). This seemed to work perfectly. Except when I opened it, and played a song, within seconds the whole freezing thing happened again, exactly as before.
So, apart from giving up on listening to music in the office, what is to be done? I am able to run other applications OK (I'm writing this within Safari), so it seems to be an iTunes related problem. I had no unusual devices connected (in fact nothing except keyboard, mouse, monitor), and no iPod connected.
Does anyone know what to do about this?
(I'm using a Power-PC based dual G5 which is only about 15 months old).
    Thanks in advance.

Just an update (I'm answering my own post) in case anyone else has this issue:
I managed to get iTunes to stop causing hard crashes. I went through the repair disk procedure outlined here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
Including running Yasu at the end with most of the boxes ticked, to clean caches thoroughly.
And I also trashed all the iTunes preferences files. The first time you run iTunes after this you have to answer some questions (as it resets the prefs) but you can always restore your settings manually afterwards.
So far so good -- iTunes launches, runs, and quits without crashing the system.
I guess this might not have been an issue with iTunes itself. The damage was probably done when the first crash happened and I had to use the power button to shut down. I still don't understand what caused the first crash, though, and Yasu seems to have deleted the panic log so I'll never know.

  • What is whole system replacement

I have searched everywhere but I cannot find an explanation as to what this is so could someone please tell me what a whole system replacement is. I only know that it is a data recovery method. I also know that it is used after a disaster occurs in an
organization as part of their disaster recovery plan

    Hi,
Yes, based on my knowledge, whole system replacement would mean if huge disaste happened to your system and  you could no longer use it, then the whole system would be replaced for you.
In windows 7, you can backup your personal files and create a system image, which can avoid such disaster in case your system is damaged or you upgrade to other windows version.

  • My aperture library will not open after restoring my whole computer after a kernal panic.  I can not get the Aperture troubleshooting menu to open...any help?

My aperture library will not open after restoring my whole computer after a kernal panic.  I can not get the Aperture troubleshooting menu to open...any help?

    Leonie,
Fisrt let me thank you for your reply and assistance!  So here is the problem with so more detail...I was not sure I was going to get any replies ; )
I restored from a time machine back up.
    History of Failure:
I was trying to launch Aperture when the kernal panic occured.  My computer had been closed, and asleep and the battery was dead.  I plugged in charger and it was restoring/waking up after being asleep/shutting down from dead battery.  I launched Aperture from the dock and as soon as it opened the kernal panic occured.  After that the computer would not turn on.  It would try to boot then it would shut off.  I even tried to safe boot to no avail.  I went to the Apple store and they told me that the only thing I could do was restore whole computer from back up.  So thats what I did.
Since then my previous aperture library: "2011" will not open.  I have created a new aperture library "2012", and it runs fine.  I have added new photos for about the past month...no problems.
When I launch aperture with 2012 library then try to switch libraries, I get the following prompt: "The selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch."  I choose "Relaunch" and I get the following warning prompt: "There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Aperture Library 20111.aplibrary”."  The only option is "Quit"
    Both libraries are version 3.2.3
    Computer stats: 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM, OS X 10.6.8
I have tried to launch aperture troubleshooting by holding option+command from both the aperture icon and from the library file, neither will launch the troubleshooting feature.
I am ok with computers, but not a whiz (mechanical engineer)...to me it seems as though there is a corrupt path or file or some sort of "check" that is failing, becuase the failure occurs so fast after trying to launch aperture. Maybe that doesn't make any sense but just a thought.
I hope that you may be able to provide some insight.  Thank you again for you time and I hope that you have a nice day!
    Mike

It may well be a driver issue but considering the loading: Xorg trying to load different drivers is somewhat normal. @cafe you can see that these are autoconfigured by X above the loading in the log:
    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 0
    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 1

    Jul 20 19:48:24 arch gdm-Xorg-:0[216]: (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 4
As long as one of the drivers gets loaded, which it apparently does the failing of the others is fine.
Was there an update maybe ?

  • Whenever I plug my ipod into the aux line on my Pioneer sound system in my car, the whole system crashes.  WHY??

It didn't used to.  It doesn't matter if the battery is full, empty, or in between.  Even if the system has been playing Sirius for a long time, as soon as I plug in my ipod, the whole system crashes, restarts, crashes, restarts, etc.  What can I do??

    Try connecting another device.
    You can also try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • IMovie has frozen up on me. I've tried rebooting and reinstalling the apps- no help. I can play some of the files- but I can't get into the libraries.Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a few minutes. What can I do?

I desperately need your help. I was working on iMovie last night when the thing froze up on me. I've tried rebooting. I've tried reinstalling the apps. No change. I can play some of the files- although I can't tell which ones will play until they magically appear. I can't get into the project library or the event library. The bar that lets me scroll through the clips is gone. Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a couple of minutes and generates a "problem report" that says "iMovie Quit Unexpectedly". This all started when I was adding cutaways- and one clip just would not load. After I tried several times everything froze up. Have you ever heard of something like this? Maybe I pushed a button or somehow changed a setting? Maybe some of the video is corrupt? What do you recommend?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I have tried all the above and nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions?

  • Restored a whole lot of deleted pictures i deleted accidently.

Restored a whole lot of deleted pictures i deleted accidently, now the files are corrupt, but i can see them, "blurry" in the camera roll. Anyone with any clues on how to fix this?
I put the pictures i deleted over to a new album, which was 4 days of fun, and after i transferred them over, i chose to delete the pictures in the camera roll, which was not good. The Iphone deleted both the ones in the camera roll, and the other album. When i figured the other photos were gone too, i tried to react quickly and do a "hard" reboot on my iphone, so that my phone wouldnt "register" the delete..
The thing is that this is quite complicated, and i think i messed up real hard. Right after the reboot the pictures were there, almost, they were just files. It was 150 pictures with just the "jpeg-file" name on them..My vids shows me a message that sais something about missing URL?
And ofcourse i have done a restore in Itunes. The restore was on the other hand from the files that was allready corrupted.
Its complicated, i know...Allthough, if anyone can give me a hand here, its greatly appreciated!

Well, after reading through your post a couple of times because I wasn't quite sure what you did, I feel I might understand right now.
You had a number of pictures in the camera roll and you moved them to a new album. You then deleted photos from the Camera roll and now you want to try and recover them? Is that what you are asking?
If so, there isn't anything you can do. Adding pictures from the Camera roll to an album does not actually MOVE the pictures, it just allows you to cataloge them. If you add pictures to a new album you create on the iPhone and then try to delete them from the iPhone, you get a warning that the pictures are in another album and deleting them from camera roll will cause them to be deleted everywhere. I just tried this to make sure. Actually, the warning box doesn't just say delete, it says delete everywhere. Deleting pictures from the camera roll before importing them to the computer will result in the photos being lost. Your attempt to reboot the phone is what corrupted the files. Unless you did a backup of the phone with the camera roll intact and have not backed it up since then, you would be able to restore to that backup. Problem is, it reads as if you have already done a backup/sync, which would result in the last backup being overwritten by the latest one. In my opinion, unless something I wrote earlier has happened, then you have lost the photos.

can not find file, must locate each song one at a time need to restore my whole library

    Hello BadSteve,
It sounds like iTunes seems to have lost track of all your music and you must locate each file individually. I would recommend at this point that you check for 3rd party plugins to see if there are any causing an issue:
iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3430
If the issue persists after removing the plugins, I would next try recreating your iTunes library:
