TM Failed to back up since 2/17
I am running on a PowerBook and backing up to an external 1T My Book drive. Backups have been running fine until I went on vacation. I turned off TM for the two weeks that I was away (had my PB with me but not the drive). When I got back, TM started back up and worked for about a week. Since 2/17, TM has failed every time it tries to backup. Often I get the Finder error alert that a drive has been disconnected (TM unmounts the external drive) and then TM fails. Sometimes, there are duplicate images of the backup drive showing in the finder window (one with a spinning TM, the other not).
Is this error common to TM, that it unmounts the target drive during back up?

These mean that TM isn't sure these disks/partitions are in exactly the same state it expects.
Node requires deep traversal:/Volumes/Atlas reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|
Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|
The "deep traversal" means TM is going to look at every file and folder to determine what needs to be backed-up, since it can't trust the "Event Database" as indicated by the UUID messages.
after running.. *Device Removal* alert appeared: +The device you removed was not properly put away...+ and in the finder, the back up drive was missing. Backup continued for awhile and then stopped with no result.
Your Mac lost contact, for some reason.
I'm tempted to erase the drive and start all over again. Time Machine was backing up some 95 gigs at the time. Found article 306932 and will investigate this as well.
That may be your best solution.

Since installing iOS6, my ipad fails to back up on iCloud.
Since installing iOS6, my iPad 2 fails to back up automatically or manually on iCloud. I have the iPad plugged into the power, locked and connected to wifi, and my PC turned on as well.
It has failed to back up since 23rd September when I installed iOS6 on my iPad. A message appeared today to remind me that it had not backed up since 23rd September, however when I went to Settings/iCloud/iCloud Backup and touched Back Up Now, it tries to back up, but after ten minutes it tells me it has failed.
Is this a common problem with iOS6 and does anyone know how to fix it?
By the way, I have plenty of iCloud storage and my iphone 4 which remains on iOS5.1.1, has continued to back up automatically, on wifi to iCloud, without any issues. If you get the message "Backup not successful", I had the same problem.
My solution was to turn off some apps (Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap my device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options) and try a manual backup. If it didn't work, turn off a few more apps and try a backup. Keep doing that until the backup works. Then try adding in some of the last batch of apps that were previously turned off - the objective is to find the app that causes the backup to fail. For me, I suspect that the one app I found had a bad data file that, when included in the backup, caused the backup to quit.
This can be a long process if you have a lot of apps that you originally turned on for backups. -
Why won't my phone back up since I just bought additional iCloud storage--- it spends hours showing "Backup in Progress" and then it just fails?! I have it plugged in next to the computer and I turn it off after hitting Backup but it never completes.... Should I just give up and try to get my money back?
I'm having the same problem with my iPad (3). It's been saying that my last backup was 10/11/2012. I have tried rebooting (holding down the home and start keys to reset) and then trying to manually do a backup to the cloud. I have tried deleting the iCloud backups for all apps & setting all of them to not be included in the cloud backup (thinking that maybe one of the apps might be hanging the backup up). I have now deleted the last iCloud backup. I guess I will wait & see if it performs its backup overnight or something. As mentioned above, it has consistently been 1) plugged in, 2) connected to a wifi network, and 3) been in lock screen mode. And yet it hasn't been backing up either automatically (iCloud Backup is set to "on") or if I touch 'Back Up Now'.
Here's something that's really annoying- these posts started last April but I see no sign that anyone from Apple Support has joined this conversation. (!!) -
TS1338 My time machine is failing to back up my Mac using my external Seagate drive.
It will go through its motions, but in the end, it will say that it failed to back up. It has done it successfully in the past, but lately it has failed to complete a full back up. My 300GB Seagate drive still has plenty of space on it since I’ve dedicated it to do only that function. I have another 1TB Western Digital Book drive connected to my Mac Mini to perform the many other miscellaneous storage functions, but the Seagate is only for back ups.
If anyone can give me some advice on how to get my Seagate to do the necessary back ups, I’d sure appreciate it.Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
In the future when you report such a problem be sure to report any error messages received. -
I buy Icloud on may 28, I can't back up since I purchase, it so use less
I buy Icloud on may 28, I can't back up since I purchase, it so use less, I try to contact apple suport but I don't have they email, I'm leaving in indonesia, hard to do contact with lng distance, and I never receive any itune invoce too, please advise me how to fix my problem.
ThanksYou might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

Time machine on MacBook Pro failing to back up
I have a 5 year old MacBook pro 15.4 which I updated with Mountain Lion about a year ago. 2 weeks ago I updated with Yosemite 10.10.1. Since then Time Machine fails to back up. I have excluded the majority of files and apps from the back up as suggested, but still the message is that Time Machine requires 53.21GB but only 22.49. Can anyone help please?
ThanksThese instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

Time Machine not backing up since 10.5.2
I had my problems with TM after successfully using it for awhile. Then I started getting errors like others. So I waited for the next update. After the 10.5.2 update I stopped getting errors and it seem to come on and run. We'll I've been sick recently and not really paid attention. I just noticed that it had not done a back up since 2/11. Is that the day I upgrade?
Any ideas what I should do?

Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster - Drain Roles / Fail Roles Back
Hi all,
In the past when I've needed to apply windows updates to my 3 Hyper-V cluster nodes I used to make a note of which VM's were running on each node, then I'd live migrate them to one of the other cluster nodes before pausing the node I need to work on and
carry out the updates, once I finished installing the updates I'd then simply resume the node and live migrate the VM's back to their original node.
Having recently upgraded my nodes to Windows 2012 R2 I decided to use the new functionality in Failover Cluster Manager where you can pause & drain a node of its roles, perform the updates/maintenance, and then resume & fail roles back to the node,
unfortunately this didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped, for some reason it seems like the drain/fail back decided to be cumulative rather than one off jobs per-node ... hard to explain, hopefully the following will be clear enough if the formatting survives:
1. Beginning State:
Hyper1 Hyper2 Hyper3
VM01 VM04 VM07
VM02 VM05 VM08
VM03 VM06 VM09
2. Drain Hyper1:

3. Fail Roles Back:

4. Drain Hyper2:

VM03 VM06
VM07

VM09
5. Fail Roles Back:
Hyper1 Hyper2 Hyper3
VM01 VM07
VM02 VM08
VM03 VM09
VM04
VM05
VM06
6. Manually Live Migrate VM's back to correct location:
Hyper1 Hyper2 Hyper3
VM01 VM04 VM07
VM02 VM05 VM08
VM03 VM06 VM09
7. Drain Hyper3:
Hyper1 Hyper2 Hyper3
VM01 VM04

VM03 VM06

VM08

8. Fail Roles Back:
Hyper1 Hyper2 Hyper3

9. Manually Live Migrate VM's back to correct location:

VM02 VM05 VM08

Step 8 was a rather hairy moment, although I was pleased to see my cluster hardware capacity planning rubber stamped, good to know that if I were ever to loose 2 out of 3 nodes everything would keep ticking over!
So, I'm back to the old ways of doing things for now, has anyone else experienced this strange behaviour?
Thanks in advance,

Hi, can someone help please - my iPhone hasn't been backed up since early August, now I can't seem to get it to back up to iCloud. I have 9GB of space, I have left it plugged in etc for 11hrs, but keep getting the same message " iPhone backup could not be completed" -what dies that mean.?
Hi,
I was facing issues with both backup and FB integration after the iOs 6 upgrade. Before then I did not have any issues with the iCloud backup service, but after a few days, I noticed that it was continually stuck at the Estimating time for the backup and it never progressed.
As any good techie would, I tackled the most pressing issue first . . . FB integration of course.
I had read in a separate post about this solution so tried it . . .
I deleted the original FB app and hard booted the phone. I then went into settings and entered the data for FB integration. Seconds later, I received a text message to my phone - already listed and verified in FB with a 6 digit code to re-enter instead of my password. Seconds later I was verified and then prompted to download the FB app. All backup and integrated.
Then I went into the iCloud backup, turned it off . . . and deleted the last backup. I then re-enabled backup . . . and although I thought I was going to face the same issue, after a few minutes, it moved on from Estimating time . . . to actually backing up. It is now a small way through the backup and seems to estimate that it will take another two hours to complete.
A good nights work. Backup and integration all sewed up. Good luck.
Cheers

how to retrieve all datas that lost when i update my iphone4 to that 6.10 ios. i tried to look at may i tunes in my computer but it seems that i forgot to perform back ups since i purchased this phone 2yirs ago.. pls send me an advice..thank u.
All of the data should be on your computer, simply sync it back.
If the update was done via iTunes on the computer, the first step in the process is a backup of the device. -

Time machine crashing and failing to back up
I have 5 intel macs all running snow leopard 10.6.5. I have a macmini server running 10.6.5. I have 4 of the five successfully backing up via time machine to the server.
One fails to back up. It has about 230GB of data on it. If I blow away the current backup and run time machine, it backs up about 25GB and then crashes. Subsequent attempts show that there is 205 GB to back up, it starts, backs up a few GB, maybe 4 or 5, and then crashes. Does the same thing consistently. I thought maybe corrupt files on the client so I have run Disk Warrior on it and Disk Utility. They report all fine now but there were some issues originally. Still the same problem though.
The console report follows and then the crash log. If anyone can translate it form me and suggest a cure, I'd be most grateful.
thanks
Mark

I have already tried Disk Utility from an external firewire disk. It finds no errors now. I will try a new cable later today and am considering cloning off the disk via SuperDuper doing a low level format and then restoring.
Given it seems to crash at the same point every time file corruption/media damage seems the most likely problem? Does the crash log confirm this? Makes no sense to me. Gibberish...
Thanks

i have been backing up since 2010 but my machine will only go as far back as feb 11 ... why is this? please help i need valueable info from 2010
Welcome to the discussion area!
When the Time Capsule disk starts to become full, Time Machine will automatically delete the oldest backups first to make room for new backups.
For more details, I think you will get a faster and more informed response if you post in the TIme Machine forum for questions like this. We primarily handle configuration set up and networking questons about the Time Capsule as a hardware device on this forum, but it's possible that someone may see your post and respond from here as well.
Please click the link below and then click the "Refine this list" 'button to see the Time Machine area.

I don't have back up since last august but I accidentally delete the message recently. How can I undo that message back ?
If you haven't backed up to either your computer or iCloud, you can't get the message back. Let this be a lesson to either back your phone up to your computer or to iCloud (or both) regularly.

Hi, I cannot access my iTunes as it says Quicktime was not found. It advises me to un-install and then re-install iTunes but I am afraid I may loose everything as it hasnt been backed u since May 2012. I can access iTunes on my iPhone but the error message comes up when I try to access this on my desktop. Any advice? Thanks a mill
Uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling should not affect your library. You should backup anyway.
