TM 'fails' but deducts GB from back up disc

I've checked other avenues before posting but can't find my issues anywhere.
My TM has failed the last 2 days. No specific error msg comes up. Just failed. I've got the TM widget, but this doesn't provide info, as my back ups won't complete, and just start over til TM decides it's failed.
I have 3.1GB waiting to to back up. TM gets to 2.9, stalls and starts over. But the 2.9GB is deducted from the available space on my backup disc. So every time TM tries to run, I lose additional disk space, even though the back up fails.
I can't find anything of help in the TM troubleshoot section, so hopefully someone can help me investigate this.

I always recommend "secondary backups;" in that case, I'd strongly recommend them.
I've learned over the years (mostly the hard way, of course ), never to trust my backups to a single app or piece of hardware: no app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later.
Like many here, I keep both full Time Machine backups, plus a "bootable clone" on a separate external HD. I use CarbonCopyCloner, many use the similar SuperDuper. That gives me the best of both types of backups, plus of course a completely separate, independent backup.
CCC is donationware; SD has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling. Either is easily found via Google.

  • Satellite C660 - recovery partition is there but can I make back up discs?

    Hi all
    Just a query
    My GF turned on her laptop Satellite C660 series and it would not boot up, we tried to initiate the recovery sequence from the recovery partition but kept getting the error that was on boot up (the error was telling us a USB device had been unplugged).
    As you probably guessed she never made the back-up discs when prompted, all I could think of was using a win 7 disc and reload that way then try and make the recovery discs after (I didn't activate)
    so win 7 was installed nicely and all drivers sourced that was all last week.
    Now for the crunch , the recovery partition is there can I now make the recovery discs and install from those , the win 7 I installed will soon require activation
    Any ideas?

    Recovery discs can be created with preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator and this tool is available when notebook is preinstalled with original OS from Toshiba. Additional download and usage is not possible.
    As Terentino already wrote best thing you can do now is to order original recovery disc from Toshiba. It costs a bit but at least it is the best solution for you.
    Next time if there is some problem, dont act before you post here. ;) I hope we can help you with some good and useful advice.

  • Cannot reinstall library from back up discs

    Recently lost iTunes & all music files. Reinstalled iTunes successfully but the back up discs I made will not open. Any ideas?

    It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
    See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

  • .dvdproj won't open from backed up disc idvd '09

    I saved two idvd09 projects files for backup (on two discs to be safe), and tried to open them on my new mac. I am now unable to view or edit them. One error message comes up when I try to get it directly from my backup dvd that has all my documents on it- it says that the, "file is not writable- this project seems to be write protected and can't be opened". When I copied it to my desktop and try to open it, I get, "The following files could not be found."
    This is for my wife's students-getting this to work would be huge!!!

    If you didn't save the project as an ARCHIVE, you may have real problems. An ARCHIVE includes all the elements used in the project and can be quite large. A project file has references to the location of all the elements on your hard drive at the time you last used the project - if anything is moved or deleted the project won't work.
    If you simply want to make more DVDs, you can use Apple's Disk Utility to duplicate an existing DVD. In the future, to make it easy to burn more DVDs, create a disk image file in iDVD (an option under FILE) and save it.

    Thanks for this; my issue is that I have now supposedly purchased a retail version of Acrobat X1 (i.e just spent more $$, after the upgrade attempt  to Acrobat X1 failed), and while this feigns an OK install, it fails in someway to override the "Upgrade Acrobat X1 version".  E.G. once I load up to read an acrobat file the "upgrade version" executes/intercepts and ask for serial numbers and check for a previous qualifying version which I do not have, (BUT what I do have is the current retail version of acrobat X1 which is not recognised)
    Do I need to uninstall and start over again? (I am reluctant to do this as I am sure serial number issues will arise, as I assume downloaded file will be cleaned up etc, and I am not spending more money trying again!)
    Any suggestions?

    To back up to your computer, right-click on the name of your iPad on the left side of iTunes and click Back Up.  (If running iTunes 11, first go to View>Show Sidebar.)
    To get your iPad to back up to iCloud again, try deleting your last backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, swipe across your backup and tap Delete, then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on again.  If it still won't back up, you may have an app that is preventing the backup from succeeding.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is preventing the backup and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.
    If it still won't back up you may have network issues connecting to the iCloud server.  Solutions to that include power-cycling your wireless router (unplugging it for 15 seconds, then plugging it back in), resetting network settings on your phone (in Settings>General>Reset), updating the firmware on your router, and changing the router's DNS settings to use Google's public DNS (see https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using).

    I wonder what your computing environment is. Is your account being administrated by another account? Are you working in an account subject to "Parental Controls"?

    That is the highest you will be able to go with 3g. You need 3gs or 4 to go any higher (multi processors and more memory needed).  Version 4.2.1 marks the end of your updates for that device.

    In preferences turn on iTunes sharing in iTunes preferences and keep iTunes turned on in both accounts. Or better yet put the iTunes library on the main HD rather than in an account and set the location of the library to that location in iTunes preferences.

    If you had Photo Stream enabled with your iCloud account settings on the iPhone, photos in the Camera Roll should have been transferred to your photo steam automatically when the iPhone was connected to an available wi-fi network.
    Your photo stream is not available when logging in with your iCloud account with a browser on a computer.
    Why were the photos in the Camera Roll deleted?
    Photos/videos in the camera roll are included with your iPhones backup. If your iPhone's backup has not been updated since the photos were deleted from the camera roll, you can try restoring your iPhone from the backup.

A customer service rep gave me a link to download off the Adobe site, but when I try to open the file to run it, I get this error message - "A problem occurred extracting the archive".

    Yep.  Nothing happens at all. Windows tries to execute the uninstaller, but I don't get any other screen and all activity stops for the MSI.  I monitored it in Process Monitor and the MSI executable appears, but is quickly ended, like it couldn't find anything or something.
    It's as if windows has a blank entry in Programs and Features, because it used to show the size of the Adobe application in the "Size" column.  Now it's just blank.  Link to screenshot below:

    Note the install date.  That's when I was able to successfully reinstall it.  Now I can't even do that.  I should also mention I tried Revo Uninstaller.  It deleted one small registry key, but nothing changed.
    By the way, is the CS cleaner supposed to ask for a disc in the drive when you run it?  It refused to run unless I had one in it, so I used my install dvd.

    The prgram is in one location and the library (media + library files) are in another. Sending it all to the trash would take some pretty delibrate multiple actions and digging through multiple folders, so I don't know how this was managed unless there's something in Snow Leopard that's new. Occasionally I have moved a file to the trash in Finder that I didn't want to and I can use Finder's "undo" to undo the last move. With many files...?

    They can provide some kind of way towards this solutions...
    eg:
    1) Accept my UK iPhone in India courier it to Purchased Place (Repaired it)
    2) Accept my UK iPhone in India Take some difference assign me India iPhone.
    3) Accept my UK iPhone in India give me any option to ugreade to iPhone 5 (Indian).
    4) Accept my UK iPhone in India give me some Receipt (Courier me My new iPhone from UK).
    5) Approve my VISA for going to UK again as it not easy for INDIAN to go there with some kind of this Reason.
    6) Give the Postal Address where we can send our APPLE to get only Service and they can send it back to us if it got reparied.
    As no one would like to go UK only to Purchase APPLE..
    There are some personal reason they have to go to Other countries for ... and If some one is FAN of APPLE like me would do the same mistake that I have done..
    7) If the APPLE wanted to serve their customer they would have get to the solutions with their excellent mind.
         As far as I am concern I am just the USER of my FAV APPLE but.. .. I guess this policy would not keep me as the SAME FAN of APPLE as I am now...

    What do you mean " back up my photos or Apps"?
    The photo sync is one way - computer to ipad.
    You can transfer itunes purchases.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
    Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
