TM Gets hung up while backing up

Hi.
My TM keeps getting hung up while backing up. It's been more than a week and sometimes I get to 11KB and sometimes I get to 6.6MB. But every time it gets hung up and won't finish. I try stopping the back-up but that won't work. I have to eject the backup disk to get it to stop. TM pref pane says Failed. I ran disk utility on the disk, but it's fine with no errors. I checked the COnsole to look for error messages but there are none pertaining to TM.
What do I do?

It's a FireWire LaCie Porsche 250 GB external HD, which I think is a very decent disk. In fact, I've had no problems with it whatsoever until this past week.
Maybe, but they're all mechanical contraptions . . .
Now, something else I've seen is that when I turn off TM and then turn it back on (the actual switch in the pref pane) I am asked to choose a disk to use for backup. When I select "Macbook Pro Backup" it asks me if I want to back on the same disk that my original data is on. That seems weird to me. In fact in my list of disks, I have the external HD (2 partitions) and my Windows partition HD but no "Macintosh HD" start-up disk.
That sounds like the message you get when you want to back-up to a different partition on the same drive. It will let you do that, but warns you first that it may not be a great idea.
And you should only get the "Choose a disk" prompt if there isn't one already selected.
TM should list any volume with TM backups on it (from any Mac) in the excluded list, but in gray, so you can't remove it.
It's a long shot, but it might be worth a try to do a complete reset:
Stop TM, de-select your TM drive (select "none"), note your exclusions, then quit System Preferences.
Delete the top-level (not in your home folder) file: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Re-select your TM drive, re-enter any exclusions, try a +Back Up Now+.

After I plug in my iPhone, iTunes gets hung trying to back it up. Clicking the "x" next to the backup window does nothing.

    Try this:
    Quit iTunes.
Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu>All Programs>Accessories>right-click "Command Prompt">choose "Run as Administrator")
Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and hit ENTER.
    Reboot your machine.
    Restart iTunes.
If that doesn't resolve it you'll have to go to iTunes>Preferences, on the Devices tab click on the backups shown and delete them.  Then try syncing again.

  • ITunes gets hung-up while playing

Since upgrading from 7.0.1 to 7.0.2, I have been having trouble with iTunes getting hung-up. While playing a track, it will get almost to the end (about 1-3 seconds left), then it won't go any further in that song, forcing me to skip to the next track. This happens about a third of the time. Any ideas as to a solution? If I can't fix it, is there a way to go back to 7.0.1? Using a Titanium PB G4, OS 10.4.8. Thanks.

I'm having a similar problem. After upgrading to iTunes 7.0.2 (running on my iMac), iTunes frequently stops playing. Technically, iTunes looks like it's still playing in my case, but there is no sound coming from either the computer speakers or the AirPort connected speakers. This happens several times an hour--VERY annoying. Any advice?

  • Time Machine hung up while "backing up"

Time Machine's first attempt at a back up failed this morning. And as this has happened before, I simply did what I had done in the past ... a manual "back up now". But today, it didn't work. Instead, the Time Machine preferences states that it is "backing up" and seems to get hung up like that. When you check the TM Buddy widget, the following line is listed over and over 10-15 times ...
Waiting for index to be ready (915 > 0)
TM has been hung up for hours ... seriously hours ... like this. I've manually stopped the back up, restarted the computer, etc. all to no avail. And now when I've tried to b/u, my widget displays nothing. So, I don't even have anything to post to aid in assistance. TM is currently turned off.
Any help on where to go from here is greatly appreciated.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
This can be caused by several things.
First, are you sure it's formatted properly? Use Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Select the top line (with the make and size). Down towards the bottom, *Partition Map Scheme* should be GUID for an Intel Mac, +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac.
Then select the second line. Down towards the bottom, Format should be +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+
If you're running any anti-virus scans, exclude your TM disk from them.
Also exclude it from Spotlight, at least temporarily, via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
If those don't help, that leaves the drive itself:
    Is it FireWire or USB?
If USB, does it have it's own power supply, or does it get power from your Mac? If it uses your Mac's power, try another port (not one on your keyboard), and try unplugging other USB devices such as printers.
The drive may be "spinning down" at idle. Try System Preferences > Energy Saver and de-select +Put the hard drives to sleep ...+ Some drives respond to that setting, some don't.
Does it have an automatic "Spin down" mode of it's own? If so, can you disable it? Check with the manufacturer's web site, support, and/or forums. Some WD drives, I think, have a recent firmware update that may fix this.

  • FCP4 gets hung up while loading audio filters, then quits

I have only very cursory knowledge of Final Cut Pro. It is installed on my G4, and has been used successfully in the recent past.
Upon opening FCP4 without my iLok in, I am prompted to purchase or cancel using all of my Waves plugins for ProTools, one by one. When I use the iLok, then FCP4 gets hung up on loading the audio filters, and subsequently "unexpectedly" quits. I have tried shutting down and rebooting with the ILok in place - no luck there.
I was unaware that Waves even operated as a plugin inside FCP, yet opening FCP seems to require my Waves authorization, but when I give it, FCP crashes. What could my problem be?
This problem just started last evening after sporadic but successful use of FCP, as well as fully operational use of Waves plugins within ProTools.

AudioUnit Manager 1.1 will let you create default sets of AudioUnit plugins.
Third party components are usually to blame with FCP failing to start up.
With this free app you can create sets which are specific to a particular program.
For example, create a set for FCP with the all offending plugins disabled.
When you boot up, they are placed in a "disabled" folder and stay disabled until you launch a set that includes them.

  • Whenever I try to sync my ipod touch, it doesn't work.  The computer seems to get hung.  What could be happening?

Whenever I try to sync my ipod touch, it doesn't work.  The computer seems to get hung during the back up stage.  It says it is backing up the ipod but nothing happens, for hours.  I eventually have to interrupt it and give up.

    I have the latest itunes.
    I tried resetting sync history.
    For this section:
If the issue persists, and you know all your contacts, calendars, bookmarks and notes are on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
Remove all of the contact and calendar information from Outlook.
Select the device in iTunes and click the Info tab.
Scroll down to the Advanced section, and under "Replace information on this iPhone/iPad/iPod touch" make sure Contacts and Calendars are not selected.
    Click Apply.
This doesn't seem to make sense for my situation.  I don't sync anything between outlook and my ipod touch.
I have no other USB devices connected to my computer.
I have no other Windows users on my computer - only me and I am the administrator.  However on my diagnostic, it said this user is not the administrator.  Weird.
So I have tried to follow that you referred me to, but still I haven't got it working yet.  Do you have any further suggestions?

  • My mac hung up while installing an update. It took hours and still did not complete the update. I restarted my mac. Upon turning it back on, a wheel has been spinning on a grey screen. I tried to reinstall OS X from utilities, but encounter an error. Why?

My mac hung up while installing an update. It took hours and still did not complete the update. I restarted my mac. Upon turning it back on, a wheel has been spinning on a grey screen. I tried to reinstall OS X from utilities, but encounter an error. What do I do?

    Hey Manaskala,
First point of call on all grey screen issues is the following:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Given this issue has appeared after a software update, I'd advise you do the following instead though:
    1. Get an external hard drive, with enough space to put the entire hard drive of your Mac onto. Make sure you've safely copied any data you have off of it, as the next step will erase it.
    2. In the recovery HD of your machine, use Disk Utility to format you EXTERNAL hard drive with the partition table as GUID, and the format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    3. Get out of Disk Utility, and click Reinstall Mac OS X.
    4. When asked where, choose to install onto your external hard drive.
    5. When the download and installation is complete, your Mac will reboot into a clean fresh setup screen. Make your user account an administrator, and make up a name and password; I use 'Test' and 'test'.
    6. Your machine is now running from the external hard drive, not the internal hard drive, so don't be alarmed when you don't see your files.
    7. Open the finder, you should see 'Macintosh HD' in the sidebar. This is the internal hard drive of your computer.
    8. Open Macintosh HD, and copy out the following folders into a new folder on your desktop:
    -Users.
    -Applications.
-Library. (This only needs to be done if you use 3rd party software that saves things in the /Library, do a quick google and see if it does e.g. Photoshop, Protools).
    9. When these have copied (it'll take quiet a while), you can now use Disk Utility to erase your hard drive. Don't erase Macintosh HD but the ENTIRE hard drive on the inside of your Mac, and as Thomas A Reed mentioned, there was likely an existing issue on your HDD so please go to Security Options and choose 'Zero Out' before clicking erase. This will rebuild the partition table which was a possible cause of the failed update.
    10. Reboot the machine holding 'Option', go to recovery HD.
    11. Choose 'Reinstall Mac OS X', this time onto your INTERNAL hard drive.
    12. When this is complete, make another admin user called test and password test, like you did last time.
    13. Run Software Update from the  menu of your Mac.
    14. In the Finder, you should see your external Hard Drive. open it up, inside that you should see your desktop etc, and on the desktop will be your folder containing Library, Applications and Users.
    15. Go to Finder up next to the  and choose File -> New Finder Window.
    16. In your second finder window, open up Macintosh HD (through the Go -> Computer menu), and go to your Users folder.
    17. Open the Users folder in your first finder window, and copy your user folder (has your name on it) into the second user folder (the one inside Macintosh HD).
    18. This might take a while.
    19. When complete, go to System Preferences -> Users and Groups and unlock the padlock.
    20. Click the '+' sign, and make a new administrator user.
    21. Now, the fun bit. Note the name of your user folder you copied, e.g. 'Nathan', containing all of your stuff. Note the difference between your user folder (has your name on it) and the Users folder (contains YOUR user folder, guest folder and shared folder).
    22. Make the ACCOUNT NAME of your new adminstrator user the EXACT name of your user folder (normally lower case and without spaces), this is case sensitive folks. Your full name can be whatever you want, usually your full name.
    23. Then click create. You should be informed that a home folder with that name in it already exists in the Users folder, would you like to make your new account from that folder? say YES!
    24. When this is complete, log out of the Test user, log into your new account we've just made, all your stuff should be there.
    25. ???????
    26. Profit.
There's a few little bits that may need to be cleaned up afterwards, applications folder from your external hard drive should replace the applications folder on your internal hard drive, if the previously mentioned /Library folder contained important goodies then that should replace the /Library folder on your new Mac.
Hopefully that will help you out, straight after that is done make sure your stuff is there, erase your external hard drive and turn on time machine!

  • How do I get an older version of Pages to work on Snow Leopard? (I already purchased it on App Store a while back)

I purchased Pages on the App store a while back and I can't get it any more on my computer.
I have an early 2006 MacBook Pro with Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8, which is the highest it would go to, and it isn't compatible with the new Pages version. How can I get an old version?
    Thanks

Just wanted to spare you the details. I bought the app on a newer MacBook Pro a few years ago, which I no longer use. I upgraded my old MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard so that I can have the App store. So, the situation now is that I can't have a higher version of Mac OS X, and the only available versions of Pages and Numbers on the App store are ones that are compatible with 10.9 or higher. Therefore, I am trying to find a way to access older versions that I can use...

    Hi Glenn,
You need to Authorize your Mom's computer to your iTunes sign on. Sign on to iTunes, then go to Store at the top of the screen, and select Authorize this Computer.
Then you can download your purchases from your iTunes library by going to the iTunes Store (the one in the sidebar), Music, and then under Quick Links, Purchased.
Once the Purchased window comes up, select "Not on this Computer", and then select All Songs. Your purchased songs will display with a cloud next to them, and you can download them selectively or "Download All" (lower right-hand corner).
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers,

The IOS5 upgrade will erase everything on your iPad, so make sure you have a good backup before you start.
If not, you will just have to reenter all of your settings all over again.  Have you ever backed it up successfully?

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

    Hello, what OSX version?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.
