TM hangs exactly 3/4 the way thru initial backup on G4 Powerbook

Question

I've tried with two different external drives, one a USB and the other a FireWire. TM hands exactly 3/4s the way thru the initial backup. At first I thought it was the drive, so I tried a FW HD instead. Then that drive hung exactly the same place. So I suspect TM is getting caught up with something on my machine. I installed Leopard as a clean install. How can I figure out what's the problem. I've tried all the repairing of permissions and stuff that I could think of. Any thoughts?

If you will open Disk Utility, at the bottom of the window, it will tell you how your drive is formatted.
Select the HD itself, and the last heading is- *Partition Map Scheme:*
Now select your volume. The second heading is- Format:
On my backup drive, I use the GUID partition Table and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the other half of the drive is partitioned and formatted for MS-DOS (FAT32).
I have a MacPro 2.66 and I am one of the few who have had ZERO problems with Time Machine. (Knock on wood).
