TM is calculating/cleaning up and deleting all the while?
My system disk recently died. I was able to recover to my most recent backup with Time Machine, and used that drive for several days as a boot drive until I could get the iMac in for repair.
After using Disk Utility to copy that recovered volume back to the new iMac drive, Time Machine has now been running continuously, alternating between "Calculating changes;..." and Cleaning up...". Each cycle leaves me with a little more space on my TC drive, and a newer "Oldest Backup:" date. I've now lost a year of old backups, freeing 300 GB of space on that back up drive, but it's still running. Should this be happening?
In a word, yes.
The new drive, being new, will be backed-up completely (that's what TM does, after all). As that will be a large backup, TM has to delete old backups to make room.
Unfortunately, on a Time Capsule, that's a long process. TM has to mount the sparse bundle, delete the oldest backup, dismount the sparse bundle, compact it, then mount it again to see if it's made enough room. This will be repeated over and over again.
You do have some options, none very good, and for any of them, connect via Ethernet cable if at all possible:
If your TC isn't much more than twice the size of the data it's backing-up, this process will go on and on, but ultimately fail, since TM won't ever delete the last remaining backup. So your best bet by far is to either delete the sparse bundle or erase the drive and let TM start fresh.
Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. The messages will show how much space it needs, and how much there is. If it has a long way to go, note how much space it needs and cancel the backup. Then delete several backups yourself, via #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Let it grind away. Go out to dinner and/or a movie.

If the Mac's firmware was updated, you can try this Internet Recovery:
Hold down Command + Option + R during restart or bootup; hold until you see a spinning globe (takes up to 10 minutes). Once in the Utilities window, use Disk utility to wipe the drive, then return to the window and choose to reinstall OS X. If that works, the OS will be installed without being tied to an Apple ID.
FWIW, if the firmware was updated, you will not be able to use the Snow leopard disk to install - I just did several tests and it does not work. You can, however, possibly install the SL onto an external drive and then clone it to the internal or (if you have a clone), boot from that and clone it back - I just tested that as well.
If the firmware was not updated, then you can use the SL install disk. -

ICCID unknown is a critical failure, usually caused by hacking or jailbreaking the phone. It can not be fixed. The phone will need to be replaced.

I was trying to do the latest update on my desktop for my Itunes. I got MSVCR80.dll is missing. I saw a post about deleting all the apple itunes programs, restarting and reinstalling. I tried that. As it was installing a message came up about "Service'Apple Mobile Device' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start systems services. I did a retry, got the same message, then hit ignore. It went on. Then a message popped up saying "Itunes not installed correctly" Error 7 (Windows error 126)
Now my Itunes program will not open at all. What gives? This is very frustrating and I am not very computer literate to begin with.Hi Iss9243,

I want to search for a pattern string in the entire registry and need to delete all the keys and sub-keys that contain the pattern. How can I implement this in VB Script or C#? Appreciate if you can give some sample examples. Now every time, I am manually

Thanks PrasadThere is no built in way to do this. You'll end up having to enumerate all keys and values in the entire registry and comparing each one for a pattern using Regex or similar. This is going to be really slow but there isn't much else you can do about
it (other than parallelize the enumeration). Also note that you won't have permissions to all keys for read and/or write access so you'll need to skip over those using exception handling.

How can I import all photos from iPhoto and delete all the ones currently on my iPad?
I uploaded all of my iPad's photos to iPhoto('08) thinking it would be easier to delete and organize them. Now that I've done that in iPhoto I need help finding out how to delete all the photos from the iPad and have the iPhoto photos imported from iPhoto back to the iPad.
This workflow may do what you want:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new library.
2 - connect the iPad to your Mac with the new library open.
3 - import all of the photos from the iPad into the new library.
4 - select the option to delete all of the photos from the iPad.
5 - disconnect the iPad and delete the new library.
6 - launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select your original library.
7 - assemble the photos destined for the iPad so you can easily identify them by album or event which you alread have done.
8 - launch iTunes and connect the iPad to your Mac.
9 - go to the photos section for you iPad and synce those particular albums or Events with the iPad.
That will get those specific iPad photos back into the iPad.

iPhoto is an application and lives in your Applications folder
Your photos are in a database which by default is names iPhoto library and is in your pictures folder
I still have Iphoto on my computer.
Is this the application of the intact non-functioning liPhoto library?

Such apps and settings that apply to icloud, appstore, and itunes. I know the apps will still be in the new account and any other purchased apps will be in the appstore for re-download. But what will happen I delete user accounts and choose not to save any folders or files of the soon to be deleted user accound? I don't have a disk to do a clean install and I'm trying to give my super old macbook pro to a friend and I want to make sure the laptop is his and everything of mine is gone. Will erasing free space do that trick?
If it is not installed in HD>Applications folder and installed in a user account then it's gone with the user account. It's that simple.

Photoshop Quit Unexpectedly... and deleted all the brushes I made in the past month
I have a Photoshop CS5 on a Mac. Over the past 2 weeks, my Photoshop has quit on me unexpectedly 3 times, and all 3 times it has deleted all my information made in the past 2 months. By information I mean what recent files I have opened and any brushes I made in that time. Does anyone know what this may be? In that time I have tried reinstalling it but that just deletes all brushes I've ever made. I have no clue why it's doing this. and I forget what it said my error was so I don't know any extra information about that.
Also if anyone knows the number for the photoshop support, that would help tremendously. I can never find it and the computer just sends me into circles.

My iphone was synced to my old computer
How do i add content to my phone from my new computer. It says i can only be synced with one computer and it will delete everything on my phone to sync with the new computer.
This doesn't make much sense. What am i missing?It does make sense. The iPhone is a one-person device and just syncs to one computer.
The way it should work is as follows:
Old computer content ---> New computer
New computer <---> syncs to iPhone
But the way you are trying to operate sounds like:
Old computer content ---> iPhone
... and ...
New computer content <---> iPhone
So simply move your old stuff (either directly from iTunes, or from a computer backup) to the new computer, have it all there, then sync your iPhone to the new machine. -
Saving just 1 or 2 clips for future projects and deleting all the rest.
I have several completed FCP projects that I would like to pick just a small number of clips from to save for future demos. Then I would like to delete those projects to reclaim my hard drive space. If I start a new FCP project and paste the clips into it, will it copy the source media as well, or does it only point to the media in the original project. (Yes, I'm fairly new to FCP).
You can use FCP's Media Manager, but here's what I'd do to keep it straight forward and simple. Place an IN and OUT point on the sections you want to keep then export them each as self-contained movies ... or you can place the clips you want end-to-end and export them all as one movie and cut it up later when you're making your demo reel. Once you've exported the clips you want to keep, you're free to delete the rest.

Depends whether you have selected Lock when Full or Wrap when Full for the Buffer Mode. If you have selected Lock When Full, the capture will stop when the the buffer is full. You can then Save the Buffer and download it in the form of sniffer file and start you capture again. This will over write the old data. If you have selected Wrap when Full, then it will continue the capture when the buffer is full. The oldest packets are discarded as new packets arrive.

All my music/videos and Purchases have literally dissapeared from itunes folder and hard drive. It was there half an hour ago and all that happened is:
I forgot my password. It is even more serious because I was already signed in and downloading a video and was only asked for my password when i wanted to view my account whilst the download was taking place (Itunes must have remembered my password and logged me in automatically because I did not sign in to download the song but it was happening). Anyway...i went through the password reset procedure and returned to itunes to find an empty area where all my music/podcasts/purchases/videos should be.
(I have not plugged my ipod today in at this stage)
So I look in the music files for my music and it has all gone!! everything!!
I then looked at the empty itunes and it said there are two downloads pending. one was a video i had already downloaded successfully into itunes last week and one was the video i was downloading today when the problem ocurred.
so next I went into my account and looked at purchase history and it does not show any purchases other than the one that was downloading today. This is despite me purchasing 3 songs and videos since Christmas??
All my other history and account information is still there.
I tried importing the itunes library file left in the my music folder but was told I had no privilages.
Next I rebooted PC but no change
Next i plugged in my ipod and it came up with the ipod was synced to a different itunes library do i want to sync and replace. I said no
I removed ipod quickly
So I still have all songs/videos and podcasts on my ipod but an empty music folder on my hard drive and an empty itunes library that thinks it does not belong to my ipod.
That is a massive amount of corruption to my PC in a space of 30 mins. could you please explain what you have done to my itunes and more importantly the mechanism that allows your program to enter my hard drive and delete all the music in front of my eyes??. Can i restore the library using the files on my ipod and what has happened to my purchases in the 'my account section of itunes'
This is obviously very serious and VERY urgent as it touches on hacking my PC unless i have missed something???
Couild someone please get back to me ASAP with ideas/help

Home PC Windows XP Athlon XP3200 2gig RamI have found a solution that works 100% with my ipod 5th generation 30gig video with the following symptoms:
a). Ipod has all my music on it along with videos podcasts etc etc…
b). the My documents/My music/itunes files library etc are all suddenly empty on the HDD and all music/video in folder has gone. I even ran searches of the whole HDD and all music has gone.
c). When ipod is plugged in you get the message ‘this ipod is synced with another itunes – do you want to – ‘sync and replace’ or ‘copy purchases from this ipod to this itunes’ or ‘CANCEL’
If this is not the problem with your ipod then another solution may be best for you. If it is ….please read on. PLEASE READ ALL TEXT BEFORE ATTEMPTING.
1. go to ‘my computer’ and then to the tabs at the top: tools – folder options – view and in hidden files and folders make sure that show hidden files and folders is checked.
2. leave the my computer window open so it can be viewed.
3. plug in you ipod and it will try to sync and give you the options mentioned in intro
4. Make sure you press cancel and the ipod should try to sync for a couple of seconds then the ‘do not disconnect’ symbol on the ipod should stop flashing and your normal menus should appear on the ipod.
5. The ipod name should now be in the itunes folders on the LH side of itunes as usual. your itunes folders (perhaps purchases may show up)should be empty due to the fault.
6. click on the ipod to get the status and capacity screen and on this screen check the ‘disk use’ button.
7. the ipod should be seen in the ‘my documents’ folder if it is not disconnect and let it try to sync again but make sure you do not let it.
8. Once ipod drive is seen in ‘my computer’ minimise itunes (do not close or drive may disappear)
9. Go to the itunes directory on the Windows machine (My Music/ itunes by default) and delete the XML file and the ITL file which is the library database installed when you hooked up the iPod.
10. With those files deleted the itunes library is now empty as it should be for this process.
11. in ‘my computer, right click over the ipod drive and click ‘explore’ Find the folder called iPod Control it will appear to be transparent as it was a hidden folder
12. Copy that folder to anywhere on the PC which will take a while if you have a lot of songs. you may as well copy it into ‘my music next to the itunes folder for neatness. Even though it appears to be filled with many files with nonsensical names this is in fact the music library on the iPod.
13. When this copy is complete right click on the coppied file and go to ‘properties and uncheck ‘hidden’ and ‘read only’ tabs and the folder should then appear as a normal folder
14. Maximise iTunes and go to the top tabs and go EDIT/PREFERENCES/ADVANCED and make sure that ‘keep itunes music folder organised’ and ‘copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library’ are selected.
15. This is important to get iTunes to organise the songs using the ID3 tags in the song files you just copied over.
16. Go to ‘my music’. If new XML and ITL files have appeared delete them now .
17. Now in itunes go to FILE/ADD folder to library and Next, select the coppied ipod control folder from ‘my music’. That's it- you will now see iPod songs copied to itunes desktop and nicely organised and in the iTunes database as they were before the fault. NOTE this can take a while
18. Once completed restart computer first and check library is stable and all songs etc have restored and are stable). you will notice a new xml and library file have appeared in ‘my music’
19. Connect the ipod once you are happy the scontent you want is back in the library on itunes.
20. This time select ‘sync and erase’ You will see your ipod be emptied (GULP!) but then itunes should start to restore all the songs etc from the library to your ipod. again this will take time.
21. Once complete you should be back to normal and you can decide whether to store the ipod control folder in ‘my music’ somewhere as a backup or delete it
I really hope this helps but It worked for my 5th gen ipod 30 gig video and so should work for you. If it fails for any reason I cannot be held responsible and you do this at your own risk.
