TM LaCie XHD fails again

Have 500GB LaCie d2 HD QUADRA from 2007 as my TM backup XHD.
3-2009 failure to mount & had to replace Power supply under warranty. Now same problem.  I read online many people have problems with LaCie power supply failing repeatedly.
Thinking of getting “G-Technology G-DRIVE 2TB Professional External Hard Drive”
Hoping it is better quality.
Then I plan to transfer my TM backups from my LaCie as follows:

Mac OS X v10.6: How to transfer your backups from your current hard drive to a new hard drive
If you upgrade to a new hard drive with a larger capacity, you may want to transfer your existing Time Machine backups to it before using it for regular backups.  To keep your existing backups on your new, larger backup hard drive, follow these steps:
          1.          Connect your new hard drive.
          2.          In Disk Utility, make sure it has a GUID partition and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  If needed, reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended with a GUID partition. If you do not know how, see the steps in this article.  Note: Back up any data on the hard drive before you format it.
          3.          Select the new drive's icon on the desktop and choose Get Info from the File menu.
          4.          Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" is not enabled.
          5.          Open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences.
          6.          Slide the Time Machine switch to Off.
          7.          In Finder, double-click the current backup hard drive to open its Finder window.
          8.          Drag the folder "Backups.backupdb" to the new hard drive.
          9.          Enter an administrator user name and password, then click OK to start the copying process.  This may take some time to complete because all your backups will be copied.
          10.          In Time Machine System Preferences click "Select Disk…"
          11.          Select your new hard drive, then click "Use for Backup."
Now, on your new hard drive, you will have all of your existing backups from the previous backup hard drive plus have more room for more new backups.

Of course, I’ll need to get the LaCie to mount b4 I can do this so I will probably need to buy a $35 new power supply & hope it works. I don’t know if I can open the LaCie & remove the drive from the case & recover the data as I’ve read others have done. Long, involved process.
Any comments on quality of LaCie & failure of power supplies & quality of the G-Tech product for TM?

No comments/no interest in this topic.
As a courtesy I will update in case anyone with similar problems reads & wonders what ever happened? Was it is fact the LaCie power supply a 2nd time or did the XHD itself fail this time?
Yes, it was a 2nd failure of the crappy LaCie power supply. So I can confirm from personal experiences the repeated failure of the poorly designed LaCie d2 quadra power supply. That is one huge “brick” /converter/transformer.
Note: The LaCie blue light s/b steady when on & not backing up, when it backs up it blinks as it does when the power supply fails. Also you can put your ear near the XHD & hear it spin up. When p.s. fails you can hear it start to spin up for a few seconds & then stop & then try again & repeat & then it stops trying & the blue light starts blinking. The power brick’s green light remains on & steady whether it is good or has failed.
I am very disappointed in the quality of LaCie power supplies since I’ve now had two fail & think what I read online about how poorly designed they are is true. I will probably purchase a different brand of XHD,  such as G-Technology, & use that for my Time Machine backup. While no brand has 0 failures, the LaCie power supply issue makes this brand unreliable.

Why is it that Apple is failing to get it right lately with their updates?
Tried to install latest iTunes for Windows update on my PC Win 7 and it fails again wioth same error messages as with the previous update in Febr.

To go thru all this again is taking me a few hours again to fix this problem assuming it works again this time, maybe I should just give up on iTunes instead.

  • Operations Manager 2012 Reporting Service installation failed again

    Hi dear guys.
i'm an administrator in a company. and our company decided to have monitoring tools for our servers located in two sites.
i started installation of SCOM in Two servers: 1- SQL server 2-Management server, Operations Console, Web Console
all MP's that needed has been installed and configuration completed successfully. then i decided to have Reporting Server too.i did proper tasks and started it with coordination of DBA team. but because of miss configuration in SSRS installing failed. after
repairing SSRS by them installation failed again but reporting Icon appeared in Management console
because of too many communication with DBA team, I installed a SQL server on a separate server(Full Featured) and configured SSRS too. and then started installing SCOM reporting on this server. but it again failed.

  • Hard drive fails again

I have had 2 new hard drives put into my MacBook Pro ( mid 2012 ) since July this year but the third one has just failed again.
I collected my MacBook on Saturday ( 7th September ) and I didn't have it 24 hours before I saw the same problem happening again.
The machine will constantly beachball on me and then freeze up completely, I end up getting the folder with a question mark in it.
I'd tried to reinstall the OS but it cannot find a disk to install it onto.
Does anyone know what's causing this constant problem?
I'm getting really annoyed at having to bring it into compub for them to say they will replace the hard drive only for the same problem to napping again when I get it back.
Could it be something else in the MacBook that's causing this problem?
My mac has been out of it's 1 year warranty since the end of july but the new hard drive has a 90 warranty and under the European law I know that the machine has a 2 year warranty on it excluding certain parts ( hard drive, charger etc. )

Since you're having so many hard drive failures, your problem may be with the SATA cable used to connect the hard drive to the logic board.
If your last repair is still under warranty, I would return the machine to the Apple Store/AASP that completed the repair and ask them to check the SATA cable. While it may be that you're simply having 'bad luck' with drives, I suspect the cable with so many drive failures.

  • Logic Board Fails- again.

    Hi everyone.
I have an iBook G3, purchased in Sept. of '03. The logic board crashed in Dec. of '04, and again in March of '05. Both times, I had the notebook sent in, and apple replaced the logic board free of charge, under the logic board replacement program.
Now, however, it has failed again. And, I'm getting a little fed up. I'm wondering what you think I should do- send it in for a 3rd replacement (which it's still under the 3 yr- policy until Sept), or try to fight for a replacement of the computer altogether. I'm afraid that if I get it replaced, it's just going to crash again outside of the 3 year plan, and then apple won't do anything. Should I attempt to demand a new machine now?
Times like these are soo frustrating. Mac's are great, but when they have problems, it's like the whole thing falls apart and there's never an easy tweak or fix.
    Thanks for your opinions...
    Melanie Patterson

I was kind of afraid of that. I'm not surprised.
When you get it back, avoid picking it up by the left front corner alone. If you're going to pick it up with one hand (as I usually do), pick it up in the center, under the trackpad.
The theory is that picking it up by the left front corner causes enough flex in the case that it puts pressure on the logic board and causes the solder on the graphics chip to let loose. So, if you can avoid doing that, it may help your iBook last longer.
Have you seen the new MacBooks (just announced yesterday)? Maybe your G3 will last you long enough to save up for one of those little sweet things. I'm looking at them longingly.

after all the previous problems, make gc failed again because this comand

seems to be running and accessing input file, but produces no output.

I also wanted to let you know, that I find it incredibly stupid, that cookies are hidden away in a tools menu; when most internet users would obviously prefer to be able to immediately see what cookies are being used, and could then just click and delete them immediately, without having to click 4 different buttons and then delete them. PLEASE MAKE THE COOKIES EASIER TO GET RID OF, BY SHOWING THEM IN THE BROWSER ALL THE TIME. thank you

It sounds like maybe you computer isn't able to power the device when the process is "Waiting for device initialization".  Are you using a laptop computer?  Here are a few articles about USB connection issues.

    Hey Reoh,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
If searching for files in Finder doesn't return any results, try using the steps in this article to reindex the Spotlight search index of your MacBook Pro hard drive:

  • Spinning ball, finder freezes & LaCie HD fails

Oh Hi!! Not sure where to put this at all as I seem to ahve multiple problems which is either a coincidence or something/onething is seriously wrong. I have been working fine for months with my external HD, DVD drive & MBP but over the last few days i have experienced problems with all 3. Granted, the MBP is quite old now and I am running FCP on it at times but this has been fine for a while too. The 1st thing to show was the lacie DVD drive suddenly showing me error messages when trying to mount blank dics - after a few times shutting off and on I have managed to get that working again.
Thinking no more of it, today i was working on the mbp in Word and had a spinning ball for so long i had to force quit to get any further - this is quite unusual and i have to say, since then things have not been so sweet.
After finishing that work I put my external d2 on to do some video stuff with FCP and the lacie HD made the strangest whirring noises which i have not heard before. FCP froxe so i forced quite again without ejecting HD and things went from bad to worse. Unplugged (including power cable) ext HD for 30mins, plugged back in & switched on and all it did was make ticking noises for 15mins before finally mounting (phew - haven't backed up onto disc in ages). However, when i try to go through finder to a file on the lacie when it is sleep-mode - it then causes Finder to start spinning that ball again until i have to force quit.
Sorry for the lengthy description but i don't know whether i have lacie ext HD problems, or is it MBP and appls/finder or.........?????
Does anyone have any ideas on this or where i should start to try and solve it?
Many thanks for any info or advice
    Jo

    thankyou both for your responses!
i will check clock battery - ths is a new one to me so would not have thought about it at all......
I have been using the same DVDs CDs for months with this equipment ad has always been ok till now - philips dvd-r?
I will have to try and get d2 ext mounted today to do some backing-up, i know, i'm so lazy but i got quite complacent with the lacie ext as everything is backed-up into that and i hoped i was doing enough.
the ext. HD is only a year old and I wouldn't expect that to fail yet - it's only on when i'm using video and backing-up so hardly overworked.
    we'll see what happens today
thanks again for your thougts for now

  • Internal and LaCie Drives Fail to Burn

    Ok here's the situation:
Problem #1 -- All of my burn drives have committed massive, bloody, catastrophic suicide. My internal "died" literally days after the warranty expired (I did not get AppleCare). It's still there and it recognizes when I put CDs and DVDs into it; I can hear it spin at start up and it spins when something is in there. It simply won't PLAY or BURN anything, I don't know why. I get all sorts of interesting "fail" messages, including the laser can't be calibrated and the device was removed. Usually it initalizes and then seconds later says burn completed, ejecting the disc which hasn't been written. Apple offered to fix it by installing a new one for $500+; I declined and instead purchased a LaCie external drive...
Problem #2 -- which used to work just fine. It was a little tempermental but with minor tweaking I was able to burn in iTunes, Roxio Toast (which now has decided to start crashing every time I do a drag-and-drop), Finder, etc. Now the LaCie doesn't want to work either. Sometimes the drive will mount, sometimes it won't. Even when it does mount, it isn't working properly. Sometimes I'll get the same device removed message as I do with the internal, other times it just squeaks at me. No, nothing has been dropped, banged, drowned, etc. I've run EVERYTHING on both drives -- Disk Utility, permissions corrections (even though there were no problems with any iTunes files), turning off CD text, dealing with the weird language bug in the International System Preferences, Burn Patch, setting burn speed to 4x instead of best possible, battery out for 15 minutes and restart, compressed air, etc... nada. Which leads to...
Problem #3 -- the next problem. If I can't burn CDs/DVDs, I won't die. It's an annoying, inconvenient and expensive problem, but I'll survive. I can just use my old iPod... oh, right, that just died, too. Unfortunately, along with the lovely MacBook and LaCie, I've also purchased iLife '08, Mac OS X 10.5.1, and a 200 GB Time Capsule. Of course, all of these require a functioning CD/DVD drive to install, and without one I have a lot of useless and rather expensive crap. On to...
Problem #4 -- the final issue. I have 2 512 MB memory cards in the laptop. According to my System Profiler, I have 1.69 GB left on my hard drive and the computer keeps yelling at me that I don't have enough space left on my start up. I know this. I also know that I want to keep my files, which is why I bought the Time Capsule in the first place. I haven't done ANY backups and really need it in place, both so I can free up space on the hard drive and also so I don't lose everything with the inevitable epic fail. Again, I can't install the Time Capsule without a working CD/DVD drive, so this brings us full circle to problem #1.
Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Apple found a nice way of telling me where to go (and how it really is too bad that I didn't get AppleCare) and LaCie says ask Apple, so... I'm in great shape.
    Specs:
    MacBook
    OS X 10.4.11
LaCie d2 DL DVD+-RW with LightScribe
    Matshita CD-RW CW-8221
    iTunes 7.7.1 (11)

I've freed up a ton of space by deleting a bunch of things I didn't want to, in case that was the problem. Now my LaCie is showing up as Read Only, which it NEVER was before.

  • Two Lacie drives failed at the same time??? HELP!

I have 2 Lacie drives, one older d2 250GB drive probably 4 years old and a newer d2 Quadra 500GB drive that is less than a year old (I think). I go to get on my computer this morning and needed to access one of the drives (the 250), but when selecting it, nothing was happening and finder froze. I couldn't get the system to respond so I turned my G5 off and back on and the drive than sounded like an airplane trying to take off. It wouldn't spin up at all. I'm pretty sure it's toast.
So I go to look at my other drive which is the backup drive (connected via FW800) and it seemed ok. I was able to pull some data off of it. While I was sitting there, TimeMachine started a backup and that's when the 500GB drive started clicking and the backup failed. I was able to eject it and turn it off/on, but it took a very long time to show up in Finder. So I ejected it again, turned it off, unplugged pwower from it, powered down my G5 and than powered that back up with the drive not attached. When I went to plug the power back into the drive I had a little problem - I couldn't remember which of the two cords from the 2 drives was the right one! So I tried the one that had the thicker cable and the drive wouldn't power up at all and than I tried the other one and it did power up, but ultimately had exactly the same problem as reported above.
So, when I get home from work, I'm going to try and reset the NVRAM which may or may not clear the problem with the 500GB working, but failing that, I'm in a real pickle. That backup drive has the only copy of whats on the other external! Do you have any other suggestions here? Can anyone clarify which power cube goes to which drive?
For the failed drive, is it worth it to open it up and replace the drive with a new one or just toss it and get something else? I'm in a real pickle here...

I spoke with Lacie support a few days ago and they suspect that the one drive had a catastrophic failure and the other (the newer one) was just a bad power supply. They are sending me a new PS and suggested that I at least try to remove the other drive from the case and see if I could get another system to read it. It pretty much did the same thing when it spun up - sounded like an airplane taking off.
Also, they told me that as a previous customer I am entitled to a discount on a new drive if I provided sales with the ticket number for the problem. So I called to see how good the discount was and I was pleasantly pleased. I ordered and have already received a 2TB Raid and have it installed as a RAID 1 for my main backup drive.
Now that leaves me with my old backup drive still waiting on a new PS to see if it will spin up. If it doesn't, I'm really up the creek since it was the backup for my system, including the other failed drive.
If it DOES spin up and I can access the data, that leaves me with another question. Can I access the Time Machine backups directly for the old drive? If so, will copying the latest backup folder give me all the data or is it spread out somewhere? Hopefully this will be my dilemma, cause at least the data will be there!
    Thanks.
