TM not backing up other drives in MacPro

I have a MacPro, Leopard, a 2TB external drive, and 4 drives inside the MacPro - the main one and 3 others. I thought I would check into the backing up of all 4 drives and when I went in to see, found that there was nothing -0- regarding the other drives -- I thought TM was supposed, particularly where the other drives are on the same machine, to backup all the drives. Any ideas what to do?

Did you check your exclusion list? I have my drives in bay 2 & 3 in there. For the sake of testing I removed one from the exclusion list and had Time Machine back up. It added the drive to the backup (well, it failed, since my external HD is too small :))

  • Time Machine not backing up other external hard drive

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to Leopard and am trying to use Time Machine. I have one external hard drive that is used specifically for the Time Machine Backup, it's called "Backup Drive". The other hard drive is called "Captured Memories" and is used to store my graphic design files. Time Machine seems to backup my iMac because there is a folder called iMac and it contains the files, but the folder for Captured Memories is blank. I was getting errors saying that the backup failed but when I clicked the "Back Up Now" option on Time Machine, it doesn't list the error - but the Captured Memories folder is still blank so it didn't back up that external drive. I also changed the Spotlight preferences so that it does not search the Backup Drive.
Both the Backup Drive and the Captured Memories drives are the same, they're both Seagate Free Agent Pro drives, 1TB each.
The Free Agent Pro drives both have a sleep timer that I cannot adjust, does that have anything to do with why Time Machine won't backup the Captured Memories drive? If that is the case, what other software can I use to backup the Captured Memories external drive? I want it to sync to the Backup Drive because I am constantly saving and moving files around on the Captured Memories drive.
I was using a Memeo backup software that came with the Free Agent Pro drives but the problem I was having is it would make copies of files rather than move them. For example, I have a folder on the Captured Memories drive that is called, In Progress and one that is called In Proofing. So once a project is complete, I move the file to the In Proofing folder. The Memeo software would copy the file to the In Proofing folder rather than move it. So I'd end up with 2 copies of the file, one in the In Progress folder and one in the In Proofing folder.
Does anyone know how I can simply have the drive backed up like that?
    What do I do?
Please help! I really need to make sure that the Captured Memories external drive is being backed up!

I am having a similar problem. I initially set it up 3 days ago and had it back up just the iMac to Time Capsule (about 120 GB) which it did no problem (I initially had my LaCie drive excluded). I then un-excluded my other drive, where all my photos and music reside (about 130 GB). Since then, it keeps trying to back up about 102 GB each time. Looking at the list of backups it does not appear that it has ever successfully backed up the LaCie. I am not aware of any error messages, but I have not been home much. I normally shut down the computer at night but I have been leaving it on trying to let Time Machine do its thing. All I can say is that every time I am at the computer TM is running and it always looks like it is in the middle of backing up 102 GB (usually seems to be near the beginning, never seem to see it more than halfway done). Looking at the TM panel it says the latest backup was 2 days ago. I'd appreciate any advice!

  • TC not backing external hard drive connected to Powerbook G4

I have a Powerbook G4 which I use as a media server for our notebooks and Apple TV. I have a 500GB usb hard drive attached to the Powerbook for my iTunes library. I just got a Time Capsule and quickly setup backups with Time Machine because I have over 100GB of movies that I can't afford to lose. When the first backup was done I realized that the external hard drive was not backed up based on the amount of space left over on the TC. I then went to the TM preferences and realized that the external drive was on the "do not backup" list. So I highlighted it and clicked the "-" button to remove it from that list. The "total included" amount now reflected the internal and external drive combined data amount.
The problem now is that after several backups the TC has not backed up the external hard drive. How do I get it to start backing up this drive?
    Thanks.

I have found the solution to this problem. After searching the internet for days I finally found what was preventing my external drive from being backed. It has to be formated in "Mac OS Extended journaled" format. So I had to move my library off the drive unto another one, reformat the drive then put everything back. As soon as I configured time capsule it started backing up the external drive without a problem. I hope this helps anyone who runs into this problem.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

  • Datacollector set is not running in other drives except C in Win 2003 servers

    Hi All,
Can any one help me resolving the issue I am facing. I have created a data collector set on Windows 2003 SP2 server and is running fine with default drive like "C".
When I changed the path of the log file from C to E drive, it's throwing the below message "Performance Logs and Alerts".
The xxx log or alert has not started. Refresh the logor alert list to view current status, or see the application event log for anyerrors. Some logs and alerts might require a few minutes to start, especially if they include many counters or they contain
counters to be collected from a remote system that is no longer on the network.
Note: I am trying to create the task on local server and not on remote network.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Sadasiva

    Hi,
Based on your description, please let me confirm if wait for a few minutes, will the log and alert start normally?
If log and alert still has not started, please right click the Data Collector Set and select
Stop, and then select Start again. Please monitor the result.
In addition, I’m a little confused with the description “I changed the path of the log file”. Did you mean
that change the Root directory in Directory tab in Properties? If I misunderstand, would you please let me know more details or provide a screenshot? Thanks for your understanding.
By the way, please check the application event log if you can find some clues. It may help us to go further
    analysis.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,

  • Time Machine not backing up external drive

Recently set up TM using a WD 1TB Firewire 800 Drive. All works fine but...
Have a Lacie 500GB drive that had a power supply failure so had to wait for that to be replaced. That is now done so I put the Drive back into the system. Unfortunately, despite being able to see the drive (Two partitions actually) in the TM Finder window it only shows 'now' for the drive. I can see how to exclude these drives but I don't seem to be able to force them to be included. The Lacie drive was added two days ago so I would expect it to have some sort of back up image by now.
    Guidance please.

Well, I've gone and done it now
I started again with the none TM drive and gave it the exact same name as before(changing the format to 'journalled" (it was just Mac OS extended before). I then restored the files onto it using the Clone function in Intego's backup X4 All okay so far and all the important files are now on a pristine 'new' disc. The problems started when TM started it's routine. I now get an error message:-
    "*Time Machine Error*
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume."
I then excluded the drive from the TM Backup and TM was happy with next Backup so it must be the none TM drive that is failing. I reinstated the drive into the back up and I get the error again.
Is there a prefs file or something that I can dump to clear this or should I start again? i.e. Reformat both drives, reinstall the files onto the none TM drive then start TM again. Or just reformat the TM Drive then restart from the beginning letting it pick up all drives to back up?

  • Time Machine not backing up 2nd external drive, remove option grayed out

I have two external hard drives, 300gb (firewire) and 500gb (usb). Time Machine is backing up to the 300gb. In Time Machine's options, the 500gb is excluded from being backed up, and the remove option is grayed out.
The 300gb Time Machine Backup drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. The 500gb drive is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32).
I know the backup drive needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended, but will it not even back up other drives that are FAT32?

I am having a similar problem. I initially set it up 3 days ago and had it back up just the iMac to Time Capsule (about 120 GB) which it did no problem (I initially had my LaCie drive excluded). • TM backing up from (not to) Airport Extreme drive

I have TM recognizing my HD connected to my new Airport Extreme & have successfully tested using the drive as a backup disc. However, I'm not going to be using the Airport disc as the TM disc. It is going to hold a shared media repository. What I want is to be able to back up portions of the Airport disc as part of the rest of my TM backup. I'm using an old sata drive in a usb enclosure for my TM backup.
For example: Backing up the remotely stored music collection along with files in my local home directory to the sata drive connected directly to my computer.
I know that I could use other backup software (or even DVD-R's if I want be toatly lame) for the remote backing up issue, but I'd like to stay as consistent (and use as much of the Mac coolness) as possible.
    Thanks for any help!

Time Machine can not back up network drives. if you want to back up stuff stored on an airport disk you need a different backup solution. Try [CCCloner|http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html]. It can back up remote drives. Or you can change your backup scheme.

  • Hard drive on my MacBook, iTunes was not backed up. Purchases were recovered, but missing music is trapped on other devices (iPad, iPod & iPhone). Is there a way to transfer music from these devices (esp. iPhone & iPad) to MacBook?

I had to replace my hard drive on my MacBook and iTunes was not backed up. All of our purchases were recovered, but we are missing music that we now have only on other devices (iPad, iPod and iPhone). Is there a way to recover music from these devices? Also, the missing music on the MacBook that is on the iPhone is greyed out so I can't play it. What's the deal? How can I change that?
BTW- I am going to purchase an external hard drive to make sure this never happens again. I'm am also discovering other missing very valuable data. I'm considering investing in iMatch, too.

    Try PhoneView: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/
iTunes Match is not a backup strategy. Do not rely upon it for disaster recovery. For that you need to use Time Machine or "clone" software.

  • Backing up directories on other drives?

I have 4 drives in my Macpro. Can Time Machine (using an external) be instructed to backup everything on my main drive and specific directories on the other drives at the same time?
    Thanks.

I do find it interesting that Time Machine has a list of which drives to exclude rather than include.
Surely, the logical way forward would be
    a) To show a list of what it is backing up, not what it isn't.
    b) Show you the list as part of the setting up procedure, rather than have you looking through option tabs and finding it yourself, as I did.
I must say though, that Time Machine alone makes Leopard worth buying. I have already gone back to earlier copies of files, copied them onto a USB stick, restored to "now" and worked on the old copy of the file.
    Wonderful.

  • I got a macbook pro 2008 and can not back up using time machine. it eject my external hard drive everytime. does someone has a fix???

i got a macbook pro 2008 and can not back up using time machine. it eject my external hard drive everytime. does anybody has a fix???

Does your external hard drive have it's own power supply?  It should.
Is your external hard drive formatted with the NTFS file system?  It won't work.
It needs to be formatted either with Mac OS Extended or FAT32.
(There are drivers available to add NTFS support to OS X but their quality is unknown, especially the "free" ones.)

  • TM backup: can I use two drives to back up data on two other drives?

    Hi to all!
    I have with me a 1 TB/ Thunderbolt EHD [external hard drive], a Lacie 2 TB/FW, EHD, a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD, a Seagate 3 TB/ 2 USB, EHD and [to be purchased] a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD.
I mainly use my Mac for making HD videos using FCPX.
I am planning to use these drives in the following manner as indicated by the table below:
    Drive:
    a
    1 TB,
    Thunderbolt,
    Buffalo
    b
    2 TB/ FW
    LaCie
    c
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    d
    3 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    e
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate backup
    [to be purchased]
    f
    500 GB, internal
    Macintosh HD
    Partitions
    1
    1
    1
    2
    1
    USAGE:
    editing videos, one
    active project at a time
    mainly for camera
    archives, music files,
    FCP events, projects
    and exported movies
    same as the LaCie,
    as a backup of data
    intend to have 2
    partitions of 1.5 TB each;
    one partition for personal
    data and the other partition
to back up data on the
    Thunderbolt [current project]
    intend to use this for
    TM back up of my
    Mac's internal HD
    applications, documents etc.
    backed up by:
    one partition of 'd'
    by the 2 TB Seagate
    backup 'e'
I would like to know whether I could do these things:
Can I use the TM backup feature in this manner of using 2 separate drive/partition [e/d] to back up data on 2 other drives [f and a]?
Further, I am manually copying files from 'b' drive to 'c' drive; without incurring further expense, can I ensure that whatever I write onto the LaCie [b] gets copied to the 'c' drive automatically?
Any thoughts, suggestions and instructions in these matters are welcome.

    EXT. DRIVES:
    a
    1 TB
    Thunderbolt
    b
    2 TB/FW
    [LaCie]
    c
    2 TB/ USB
    [Seagate]
    d
    3 TB/USB
    [Seagate]
    e
    2 TB/USB
    [Seagate]
    USAGE:
    scratch disk
    [planning to have
    only one active
    project at a time]
    camera footage
    FCPX events, projects
    and completed movies
    Same as the LaCie,
    as it's backup
    To be used as TM
    backup for my Mac's
    internal and also to
    the scratch disk.
    Planning to have it in
    2 partitions: to have
    a 'secondary' copy of
    my Mac's IHD on one
    partition and to have
    personal 'net retrievable'
    data on the other partition.
    'MY
    OBSERVATIONS'
    my projects are usually
    less than 10 minutes
    and hence I trust that
work would be fast and in
    case of drive failure, I
    would be losing only
    one project.
    I am importing camera footage
    primarily into this drive and
    being FW, data transfer is
    fast.
    Am manually copying
    files from the LaCie
    onto this.
    This drive is not a
    brand new one, but
    has been given to me
    by the company's
    agent as a replacement
to my earlier 2 TB drive
    which had failed.Hope
    this also will not fail!
    Because of the 'uncertain'
    performance of the
    3 TB Seagate, I intend
to have a copy of my
    Mac's IHD in one
partition. I intend to place only
    such data upon the other
partition that I will not be
    greatly affected should the
    drive fail.
If you can analyse this plan and give your insight upon this matter, I will be immensely happy.
Further, if this proposed use of the 3 TB Seagate is okay with you, I need to know how to remove the Thunderbolt from doing it's temporary role of TM backup and how to coronate the 3TB Seagate as its successor.
FYI, I would be switching off TM from functioning whenever I am editing video; I would be switching it on only after a full editing session.
Another question on my mind is this: do I need to partition the drive 'e' at all?

  • My mac book pro was stolen, i had not backed up time machine on an external hard drive, is there some way i can retrieve my files ? (does the computer save to the internet possibly or the I Cloud ? )

My mac book was stolen and although i had time machine i had not backed up to a current hard drive because that was also stolen. I was wondering if there was some software that allowed me to access my old computer somehow, does it save your files to the internet or to some external system manually ? obviously i know this is unlikely but i thought i would check as the computer had all my work on it.

I try to warn people, that TimeMachine drives tend to get stolen along with everything else.
To make and store bootable clones offsite or in a safe or something.
    Most commonly used backup methods
There is nothing you can do, unless the police get luckly and find it, then after many months in evidence you can have it back and pray your files are still there.

I purchased a MacPro and upgraded to 2 1T hard drives.  How do I access the hard drive that is not the start-up drive?

Have you formatted these new drives yet with Disk Utility?  That is the first step.
Once they are formatted, if you want to see them on your desktop open the Finder preferences, General, and clock the checkbox that says "Show these items on the desktop" for the hard disks.  If that preference was already set you should see the drives appear after they are formatted.  Then they are there for you to use as you wish.
