TM on transplanted drive

I recently had to have my internal hard drives moved to a new macpro (some sort of ram trouble). So my old drives are in the new computer -- and all my files and apps are fine.
But time machine does not recognize my original backups. It's trying to start over, but says there's not enough room.
How can I get Time Machine on the new computer to recognize the original backup set? I thought that since it had the original pref file (com.apple.TimeMachine.plist) on the exact same hard drives there wouldn't be a conflict...

So to "start over", do I just delete Backups.backupdb and empty the trash,
No, that will take a very long time, and likely hang on locked files, etc.
Erase the disk via +Disk Utility.+ If you're not sure how, see #2 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).
(It's odd that get info says Backups.backupdb is 27TB when it's on a 1 TB drive)
That's because of the way Time Machine backups are stored. See [How Time Machine works its Magic|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Works.html] for an explanation.

  • Moving TM drive

I am currently using a 2TB drive in an external SATA 3 enclosure as a Time Machine disk for my Mac Pro 10.6.8. The disk has two partitions, one to back up my 250GB SSD startup drive and one to back up my 500GB data drive. Since my Mac Pro sometimes loses connection with the eSATA enclosure I have decided to remove that partitioned Time Machine drive into the Mac Pro's remaining free internal drive bay. So far I have Time Machine backing up only my boot disk to the TM drive but I plan on having it back up my Data disk on the backup drive's other (presently clean) partition once I relocate the drive into my Mac Pro. Two questions: 1) Will Time Machine recognize the transplanted drive and it's existing Time Machine file right off the bat? 2) In 10.6.8 can I have Time Machine back up two internal drives separately to two partitions on an internal Time Machine drive?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

    BIGDADDY30,
You can connect the Time Machine drive to your Mac Pro just fine. It doesn't need to be erased first, and there may be several reasons why you wouldn't want to erase it, at least for a while.
You mention that you purchased the Mac Pro "recently." I assume that this means you are currently using it, and any files from your Powerbook that you might want or need have been transferred over. Correct? In other words, there is no reason to continue storing the files contained in the (old) Time Machine backup. Correct?
You can use the external drive for Time Machine on the Mac Pro, and in fact you will be asked if you want to use it that way the first time you connect it. However, it must be erased, and further, repartitioned in order to use it with Time Machine on the Mac Pro.
You see, Time Machine on a PPC (G4) Mac must have a backup drive that uses the "Apple Partition Map," while Time Machine on an Intel Mac needs one with the "GUID" partition map.
When you connect it to your Mac Pro, dismiss the option to use it immediately for TIme Machine. Open DIsk Utility, select the drive in the list on the left select the drive, not the named volume that will appear indented below), then click the "Partition" tab. Choose a single partition, set the format for that one partition to "Mac OS Extended (journaled)," then click the "Options..." button. You'll want to choose the "GUID" partition map here. Confirm your choice, then click "Apply."
You can then choose the drive for Time Machine's use.

  • Has Anyone Installed Bootcamp (and XP) on an External Drive?

I'm thinking of installing Bootcamp and XP on a Maxtor external hard drive to play games because I don't want to take up valuable internal drive space. I have a 120 gig hard drive on my MBP and I need as much space as I can get.
How would this work for games? My internal drive is 5400 rpm and the Maxtor external is 7200 rpm (Firewire 800).
    Thanks!

It looks like people have gotten XP on an external USB drive to boot:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=191777
    Summary:
o Hack the Windows install CD. The problem is that the USB drivers are loaded / unloaded during bootup, so that messes the bootup itself. The hack gets rid of this.
o Same hack cannot as yet be transplanted onto firewall, because somehow that's different.
I think it's not a clean solution because it looks like the process involves removing the internal drive, and also there's no pagefile (i.e. virtual memory) since WinXP doesn't allow that on external drives.

  • Will a "harvested" DVD drive work?

A very serious accident had befallen my 15in Titanium PowerBook G4 the other day. Unfortunately, the accident was fatal. Seriously damaged motherboard and TFT display. Repair costs approach the cost of a new 12" Powerbook, so funeral services are scheduled for next week, and delivery of a new 12" Powerbook is scheduled about the same time.
Fortunately, the old PowerBook had agreed to be an organ donor, so I am harvesting a number of items from it -- hard drive, 802.11b card, DVD drive, and memory. The hard drive was transplanted into an external USB 2.5in hard drive enclosure. The 802.11b card went into my older PowerMac (an M8705LL/A).
I am wondering about the memory and DVD drive, though. I have a 12" iBook G4 about two years old or so, pretty much bottom of the line, that has a CD-RW and (had been upgraded to) 640MB RAM.
Could the OEM 128MB be replaced with the 512MB from the Powerbook (assuming that the Powerbook's 512MB memory didn't get fried), upgrading the machine from 640MB to 1GB? Seems I remember reading about a memory limitation on that particular vintage of iBooks, but don't remember where I saw it or what it said about max RAM.
Could the CD-RW be replaced with the DVD drive? And would rerunning OS10.4.3 combo updater be all that would be required to install the proper DVD drivers on the iBook?
Thanx in advance for any guidance that anyone can provide.

    2001 Quicksilver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    2001 Quicksilver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The RAM from the PowerBook won't work in an iBook G4; those two machines take different RAM types, which have a different number of pins. The slots on one machine won't accomodate RAM designed for the other machine.

  • BootCamp cannot create new partition on drive free space.

    Hi Folks,
I am hoping for some advice here. I am running OS X (10.5.6) and wish to use Boot Camp to created a partition to install Windows XP SP2 for some gaming. My machine is a late 2007 MBP 2.4GHz C2D, 4GB RAM, 340GB WD transplanted hard drive.
I have about 180GB of free space for a new partition to be created for the XP install.
When I fire up the Boot Camp Assistant tool, I am immediately informed of the following:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition."
"Back up the disk and use the Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using the Boot Camp Assistant again."
+ I have never had more than one partition on this drive.
+ I installed the drive new with no partition and used a tool named 'Carbon Copy Cloner' to transfer data from the original drive onto this drive, the machine booted right away and I have been using it without issue ever since.
+ I have run Disk Utility to 'Verify Disk', 'Verify Disk Permissions' and 'Repair Disk Permissions' all ran with no problems and completed successfully.
My question is, how can I make a usable backup copy of the drive to restore back to the drive after performing the re-format?
Can I use the Carbon Copy Cloner software for this? I want to make sure that the resulting internal drive is bootable, etc.
I have been running Time Machine as well and have a disk full of backups from that app, but I have no idea how to use it to restore the drive to it's current state after re-partition and format.
Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
    John

So today I used the free "trial" version of SuperDuper to create a bootable clone of my primary internal drive.
It was about 100GB and took a long time to copy onto USB 2.0 external SATA drive, but it worked.
SuperDuper provided the option to make the copy the boot device as well. After reboot, I used OS X Disk Utility to erase primary drive.
I then performed the operation in reverse, copying the entire contents back to the original location.
After a reboot, I ran the Boot Camp Utility and received the same aggravating message which I received before.
How can I be sure that I am actually re-formatting the target drive in order to consolidate free space? Is this my issue? When I performed the erase operation, I skipped the "zero out free space" step. Am I using the correct utility to prepare the target drive?
Once again, any and all help is greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    John

  • Clean migration from internal drive to 2nd internal

My hardware and software have always been tidy compared to others (judging from questions posted here, elsewhere, and seeing/using other people's Macs). However, after upgrading to Leopard, a couple of quirky problems have been driving me nuts -- problems I've posted as questions here in these forums (namely, keyboard lockout after screen sharing and alias folder repositioning). Don't know if those are actually current OS glitches or if it's just my system. Also, a third party app is no longer printing certain fonts.
Now with a spankin' new hard drive arriving soon (for other reasons), I want to do a "clean install" and migrate everything from my stock 160GB, then reformat that old little drive for other uses. I figure I might as well tidy up some more while upgrading the internal HDD. It could help iron out any minor quirks in the process and streamline the MacOS.
But I've never used +Migration Assistant+ before. Don't know if it's relevant now. I've never done an +Erase and Install+ either from DVD, though I've been reading up about it. My DVD is a 10.5.1 retail version.
    Question is:
*What's the most clever way to proceed?*
    For example, should I:
    1. Physically install new drive in 2nd bay, run +Disk Utility+ to reformat, insert Leopard DVD and do +Erase and Install+, then run +Migration Assistant+ ? This seems logical.
    -or-
    2. First use Leopard DVD to do +Archive and Install+ onto the current Leopard 160GB, then do physical install of new drive in 2nd bay, use +Carbon Copy Cloner+ to mirror all contents, restart from new cloned drive, then delete Previous System folder within same, then reformat the older drive? This seems more clever.
    -or-
    Other cleverness?

I don't see the need for 2. You can do 1. or you can use CCCloner to clone the current install to the new drive and then do an archive and install on that directly. This will leave the original drive intact so that in case of problems you can always go back to it.
Do keep in mind that whether you use Migration Assistant or do an archive and install some of the problems you are having now might get transplanted to the new install. The only really clean way to do this is via manual migration. it's pretty tedious but will produce the cleanest system.
You'd have to do an erase and install on the new drive and then migrate what you need by hand from the old drive.
see this post for the list of things to move.

  • Yosemite Crash Wiped Hard Drives

I just had a strange thing happen. I recently got a used 2009 Mac Pro and installed Yosemite on it. It's been working fine for the past two days. Then, suddenly, about 2 hours ago, out of the blue, the screen went black and it crashed. I boot it back up, and it asked me enter a pin to unlock it. After googling this, I read that several people have had luck entering "123456" in when their computer was inexplicably locked. This caused it to go into recovery mode, and I pulled up disk utility here to try to figure out what happened. It showed that my two internal hard drives were completely empty. I've now reinstalled yosemite and can confirm that yes, indeed, they are completely wiped. My secondary drive, which had a bootcamp partition and my documents on it, still has both its partitions, but both are empty and formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). One of those partitions used to be NTFS. I'm not so concerned about recovering data (there wasn't much of actual importance on them, I kept almost everything on an external which is fine), but I'm wondering, what on earth would cause both of my drives and their individual partitions to be wiped out?

I thought about that too. The thing is, I swapped hard drives from my old computer, meaning it  should have been completely tied to my icloud account and not the previous owner's, since I basically just transplanted the OS from another computer (which might have something to do with why it crashed). After some more searching on the internet, it seems other people have had icloud lock them out of their computers after a crash erroneously. If you don't have a PIN, it wipes it anyways, even if you didn't give the command to do it from icloud (that option is disabled on my account). That's my best guess right now. For now, I've disconnected my computer from any icloud account.

  • Swap Hard Drive Clones in Powerbooks, FCP/ect Requiring Activation

    Hello,
I wasn't where to post this and assumed the reason for this issue must exist at the Unix/command line level.
    This was the process....
My brother's 12" 1.5ghs powerbook hard drive failed.
I have a 15" 1.67 powerbook. I cloned my HD to an external HD then erased my disk, setup and new system and mailed the 'fresh laptop' to him (He's very computer illiterate).
He mailed me his laptop. I replaced his internal HD with the external HD i cloned from my laptop.
Now my 'system/install/applications' all boot on 'his' old 12" but when i attempt to load up FCS applications they ask me to register/enter serial #.
The HD is located INSIDE the powerbook, how does it know that i'm not using it on the 'old machine'?
I have all the serials, is it ok if I just activate them again? I plan to install them on my new MBP (when it arrives), is there a limit to the number of fresh installs one can do? I will wipe the 12" before installing.
Can i expect my 'transplanted system' to be stable or should I be doing a fresh install anyways? it's alot of work...
I heard if you typed some command into the 'command line' it would tell me the identification number associated with my logic board? Is that how all this works?
I'm not out to cheat the system, i just don't want to have to reinstall everything when i'm just going to get a MBP and have to do it again in a month.
    Always interested to learn more,
    Thank you,
    Michael

    Hi John,
Yes, it should work to simply enter the serial numbers anew. I've had to do that when I bought a new machine. In that case, the only thing of which I'm aware that could cause a problem is if an application phones home. Micro$oft Office apps check the local neighborhood for other office apps and they compare registration numbers to see if you installed more instances of Office than the number of seats you bought. You can block port 2222 to prevent that but since the other machine is on a different local network, that shouldn't be a problem.
Of course there is one other issue. The machine with the cloned drive may not return any serial number at all. That may cause problems with an app that identifies the machine that way, even if you enter serial numbers. However, Apple states that that isn't a consistant method for identifying an Apple computer so any app that used that should have some alternative.
I had certainly purchased enough apps for it to be pain to reenter the serial numbers but it's doable. I think the ones I had the most trouble with were the Macromedia apps, which had to phone home initially in order to be used. I'm sorry but I don't know what FCS is.

  • I install window 8 and Unfortunatly all drive format. And all drive mix, now i have only 1 DRIVE C. I want Bit locker Drive's data Back

Last sunday i install a window 8 and this window format my all drive & make it 1 drive (DRIVE C). Before all of this i have 5 drive in different size with 1 Bitlocker protect drive.
So i try data recovery software to recover my data. i got back all my data without that ( bitlocker ) protected drive.
so please guys help me how can i get back data from bitlocker protected drives.
    please please help me.

    Hi,
I sorry for your experience, but there is no way to recovery the data encryped by BitLocker untill now.
BitLocker is designed to make the encrypted drive unrecoverable without the required authentication. When in recovery mode, the user needs the recovery password or recovery key to unlock the encrypted drive. Therefore, we highly recommend
that you store the recovery information in AD DS or in another safe location.

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 M602 driver issue

    Hello,
I've got issue with 600-series printers. We use the latest UPD drivrer ver. 61.175.1.18849 and print from XenApp 6.5. The error occurs every time when users try to print jpg files from XenApp session. It only happens with 600 series printers and UPD.
Also I've tried to assign native 600-series driver ver. 6.3.9600.16384 and it works good. But with that driver system says that it's color printer and it brokes our printing reports. These reports are very important for us. So we can't use printer and that driver as well.
Printer installed on Windows Server 2012 R2. All clients are Windows 7 x64. XenApp Servers are Server 2008R2.
Is it possible to get fixed UPD driver or correct native driver for Server 2012 R2?

  • PCS no longer sees BT Widcomm driver

    Hi
    [cross-posted in Connections]
I have a 6230i and a Safecom BT dongle using the Widcomm 1.4.2 build 10 BT driver s/w on Vista.
This all used to work OK, but after installing PCS v6.85.14.1, the Nokia Connection Manager now no longer shows the Bluetooth (Widcomm) option - just the Bluetooth (Microsoft) option. If I try to check the MS option, I get the "Cannot use the connection type ... Code (OpenMedia)" error.
I've tried all sorts of repairing and uninstalling BT & PCS s/w but to no avail.
Any ideas why PCS no longer seems to recognise the Widcomm BT driver?
Message Edited by mrb08 on 17-Feb-2008 10:26 PM

Just to close this off here's my post in the other thread.
Yes I finally managed to confirm that it's a PCS bug. Here's what I did.
It appears that PCS cleaner app does not support Vista nor later versions of PCS. After uninstalling all Nokia s/w from my PC, checking no old Nokia folders remained, cleaning the registry and then reinstalling PCS 6.85.14.1, the "Cannot use the connection type ..." error remained. :-(
Then I managed to find an old download of PCS (v6.82.27.0) and after installing that, the connection error is gone and the Bluetooth (Widcomm) option is back in Connection Manager! :-)
How does one report a PCS bug to Nokia?

  • IPod not recognized by iTunes, Windows Vista prompts to format iPod drive

    Hello,
I have IPod 80GB which I rarely use. Yesterday  when I wanted to use it, I went to add a few new audios to it, connected to my computer and launched iTunes. I added the folder which contained audios to iPod, synced it and wanted to disconnect, but iTunes took excepionally long to finish.
When I clicked on 'eject' icon, I go a message saying 'some files are being accessed' or something like that. I waited for 5-10 minutes but it won't finish up, so I unplugged my iPod as I had to leave.
Later when I wanted to play, I noticed I had no audios in iPod at all.
Later when I got home, connected it again to computer, launched iTunes, but iTunes won't show iPod. A few minutes later, windows (Vista) prompted a message saying that it needs to format N: drive (which was iPod).
I tried diagnostics on tis site, restarted/reset iPod etc, but it didn't solve the problem. I removed and reinstalled iTunes as per instructions, still no use.
Then I called Apple support Canada and the guy on the phone said I need to pay to get support. He said he'd send me some documents via email which would solve the problem and hen I wouldn't have to pay. I gave him my email address, but so far I have recieved no emails from him. I have checked my spam and junk folders, just in case, but nothing there.
Anyhow, this issue came up all of a sudden, there has been no physical damage to iPod, I barely use it. maybe for few minutes here and there a month. I have had numerous problems in the past every time a new iTunes update come, it always creates problems. Last year I spent many hours after iTunes update make iPod unrecognizable so I had to go back to older version, then upgrade etc. I don't remember how I solved the issue, but it took a while and it turned out to be something of iTunes version issue.
I wonder if this is another of such issue. I hope its not a hardware issue with iPod. I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks

I just got Vista too and it does recognize my ipod, but itunes can't find a lot of my songs on the computer. I tried to uninstall itunes and reinstall it thinking that it would seach for new music when I installed it again but nothing new happened when I did that.

  • ITunes + Vista = my computer can no longer see my DVDrw drive...

I just downloaded iTunes 7.6.2.9 onto my Dell Inspiron E1705 - and when I restart my computer, the computer can no longer see my Optical drive (DVDrw). I contacted Dell support, and they changed something in the regedit limits or something(I'm not a techy lol), and my optical drive was back.
But the next day when I opened iTunes I got a message that says:
"Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
    So I reinstalled iTunes.
I restarted my computer, and it could no longer see my optical drive AGAIN. My DVDrw drive gets an error that says "This device cannot start (Code 10)." When I check for solutions it says "Could not load driver software."
I go back to Dell support and tell them my optical drive isn't working. They do the exact same thing to fix it (deleting some limit with regedit) and it works. I open iTunes, and I get the iTunes Warning (Setup Assistant Error).
I asked the Dell tech what the deal was, and he said iTunes isn't compatible at all with Vista.
But according to Mac's website it is...
    Anyone know what's going on?!?!

I am having the exact same behavior as xhollysue!
    It goes like this:
    1. Install ITunes, lose optical disk drives hardware (they don't even show up in Windows Explorer).
    2. Use RegEdit to disable Upper Filters at HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}, optical drive hardware re-appears.
    3. iTunes requires a re-install to permit CD burning, and your back to square one.
I got the above fix NOT from a Dell technician, but, instead, from a Microsoft technician, which cost me $70.
I would strongly urge Apple to research this issue and come up with a more reasonable workaround since (1) the iPhone is being adopted by many traditional MS users and the use of iTunes is an integral part of the iPhone technology architecture; (2) iPhone 3G is just now shipping and will bring even more into the Apple camp; and (3) iTunes is clearly a better media player.
Come on Apple. Let's get some enthusiam and take advantage of this opportunity!

It is about 60% full of music/pictures/documents that are NOT on my Macbook, therefore I use it regularly.
Every once in a while, I accidentally remove it without properly ejecting first. But I guess I did it one too many times because now the computer will not recognize it at all.
To insure that the drive wasn't corrupt, I plugged it into a PC. It worked fine. The files are all there and were completely accessible. But as soon as I plugged it back into the Mac, it won't show up.

I have NO $$$, so telling me to purchase a $30-100 program will not help me AT ALL. I'm looking for solutions that will not effect my wallet, even if they take all day to complete.
    What can I do????????

Ok. Just to set one part straight- I doubt the problem came from unplugging your drive without ejecting. This usually isn't a problem unless files are writing or in use when you do it, but ejecting is a safe way to avoid issues.
Try force-mounting the drive in terminal by using the following commands
    *mkdir /Volumes/yourdrivename*
this command should give you the location of the drive on your computer. (It should be something like disk2 or disk1s3) Then type the location into:
    *mount /dev/yourdrivelocation*
Whether or not this works, follow up this step by ejecting the drive and unplugging and plugging it back in. This worked for me when I was having this issue.
Also- are you able to backup and reformat the drive? This would be a good thing to try if other attempts have failed.

  • Format C drive, what steps to take for retaining all data of iTunes?

    Hello
I want to format my C drive of Laptop and shift my itunes to E drive. I'm on windows 7. C drive is having itunes and in that I have synced my 2 iphones and 1 ipad.
Now I want to format the C drive and want to retain all the data, backup, media etc of my synced data with the itunes.
What I've done is that I transferred my music location from C to E drive by using apple forum discussion. I changed destination to E drive in ADVANCED TAB in Edit-Preferences. Then orgainzed data. That was successful.
Now please help me on what to do next so that i can retain my all my data of itunes safe before formatting my C drive.
    Thanks in advance

This definitely isn't intended as a substitute for tt2's tutorial (which is comprehensive and more detailed - in case of any differences I'd follow what's stated there), but in summary you should be doing the following.  I've assumed that, as per your original post, you've changed your media location to E:\iTunes and consolidated the library.  You now have a "split library" where:
E:\iTunes contains a folder called iTunes Media which in turn contains several subfolders such as Automatically Added to iTunes, Audiobooks, Music, ...
C:\Users\your user name\Music\iTunes contains the following folders and files:
    Album Artwork (folder)
    Previous iTunes Library (folder)
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library.itl (file)
    iTunes Library.xml (file)
I'd suggest making sure that you're running the latest version of iTunes before proceeding - by default, this will be the version that you download and install when you rebuild your PC.
Before you change anything else, exit iTunes.  Now copy all of the folders and files in C:\Users\your user name\Music\iTunes to the same folder on your external drive (E:) that contains your media folder.  You should now have this:
or something very similar.  Now restart iTunes while holding down the SHIFT key.  You will see this dialog:
Select "Choose Library ..." and navigate to the folder on your external drive with the content as described above.  Select the iTunes Library.itl file and click OK.  iTunes will load - check that everything you expect to see is there.
You now have a "portable library", i.e., all your media and the files that iTunes uses to organize them.  You can use this in conjunction with any PC running Windows and iTunes (noting limitations regarding your iTunes account and authorizations).  As tt2 suggested in his response, before you go any further:
Make a backup of your new portable library to another device.
    De-authorize your iTunes account.
Back up everything else you need to retain from the C: drive of your PC (this is beyond the scope of this forum - there's plenty of help out there on various Microsoft sites, etc.).  Just remember that once you take the plunge and reformat the C: drive anything that you haven't backed up is gone ...
Once you've reformatted the drive and reinstalled Windows, install iTunes.  As befpre, hold down the SHIFT key when you start it up and select the iTunes Library.itl file on your external drive. You can then re-authorize iTunes and be back in business ...
