TM restore taking forever...

I am restoring from a clean install via a network drive and it is taking forever.  Is it supposed to take this long?

See #29 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some rough guidelines.
And be sure you're doing it right -- starting with your Snow Leopard Install disc, per #14 in that same link.

  • System restore taking forever

after instaling windows updates i  restored windows and its taking forever right now its at restoring rejistery and its been there for about 3 hours what should i do?
    thanks

    Yup! it is frozen.
I got the same problem with my system just last week. I tried re-do it a few times, no resolved.
I first tried with SSD, everything went smoothly until I removed the last disc from the PC and the computer started installing all original factory softwares. I left it overnight and even half of a day next day. It kept going....
I decided shut it down and re-do it with a brand new 1TB HDD, it did the same thing...
Then I tried it with another brand new 1.5TB HDD, same thing happened...
I was just about to give up, but I thought I gona give it one time try. This time I got another 320GB HDD.. It did the same.
Then I just remembered I connected all those drives to the SATA slot other than the slot that my old C: drive was connected to.
I reconnected the new 320GB to this old "C:" slot SATA and tried to restore again... guess what? It works...
    My problem solved!!!!
    Hope this helps!

  • Restore taking forever.

    Hey,
I'm restoring my iPhone, and when I've done the restore, it hangs constantly close to the end of the restore, before it has even let me choose which back up to restore from. Any reason for this, and anyway to sort it?
    Thanks

Me as well! Restore taking hours! There is not enough data over this USB connection to take this long. There is nothing in Activity Monitor to give anything away and sadly, no specific log for what is happening. My backup last night took 10 friggin hours! I have alot of apps, but Apple techs out to chime in here and at least not leave us all hanging.

  • IPhone Restore taking forever!

I started my restore at 2 p.m today (Eastern) and it is now 8 p.m. and i still have not finished. I am on the restoring iphone from backup phase and its about 1/4 complete moving like a half an inch every 20-30 minutes. I have never had a restore last this long, this is ridiculous! I also got this backup is corrupt and had to choose another. Any ideas to why this is?
    Thanks

  • Time Machine Restoration Taking Forever

For a little about my setup I have 2 2TB Time Machine's in the basement. One is acting as my router as well, the other is just for backups. I also have an airport express in the living room acting as a Wireless Access Point for the DVR and a network range extender.
My iMac connects to the network via ethernet cable to a 10MBPs/100MBPs switch in the basement that the TC Router connects to. Everything else in the house connects wirelessly.
So recently the 1 TB HD in my iMac was replaced by the nearest authorized service center under Apple's recall or whatever you want to call it. I got the machine back about a two weeks ago or so, and stared installing the OS (the install disk I have is Snow Leopard although I had updated to Mountain Lion). During the course of the install I was given the option of restoring from a Time Machine backup so I chose that option.
The latest backup on one of the TC's was 12/2011. So I figured I had the wrong TC, went back and chose the other. This TC did not give me the option of which backup I wanted to use so I figured it must be the most recent. Hit continue and it seemed to start the restore process. After approximately 8 days the progress bar was only at 50% and seemed hung up. I let it be for a couple more days and still seemed hung up.
So here I am today, typing this on my MBP and trying to figure out what to do. I forced a shutdown of the system and re-booted with Snow Leopard disk installed and did a clean install. I go into finder and I can see my previous user account, but I can't logout and login back in as that user because the password is now not the same as it was prior to the HD replacement.
Also during all of this I changed my network around. The NetGear router I was using would not play nice with the Airport Express, so with Tech Support's help I swapped to the TC as the router. During that process both TC's had to be reset.
Currenty Finder is trying to connect to the TC with what I assume is the latest backup, I guess I will just let it go and see what happens.
EDIT: well after about 10 minutes, the backup folder opened, I selected 'Latest' and now I get a pop-up "Connecting to server" and above the progress bar it says "Resolving alias to . . . ". The names of the Time Capsules were changed as part of the TC restoration when on the phone with Tech Support so maybe that is it?
    I would appreciate any help.

Well finally got it back up and running. Ended up hooking the TC with the older backup from 12/2011 directly to the iMac, booting form my SL disk, and then restoring from the TC.
This brought my OS up to Lion.
I then made a Lion boot disk, booted into that, and was able to restore to Mountain Lion from the latest backup on the other TC.
All I can figure is that for some reason Snow Leopard wouldn't let me restore to an image made from Mountain Lion?
Lesson learned is to have a boot disk. I now have an optical Mountain Lion boot disk, and a boot disk on a flash drive in case or the other fails.

  • IMovie restore taking forever

I am restoring a 30 minute movie from time machine.  It has been restoring for 15-20 minutes.  How long should a restore that size take?

    Hi
Restore - No - Don't know - BUT reg speed I accidentally found out
    • When Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk fills up - everything goes slowely till it stop - I never let it go under 25Gb free space
    • Starting a new User Account - and do my project here - speeded up project significantly
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show and Speed increases slightly on My Mac.

  • Corrupt iPod Restore taking forever !!

iTunes told me that my iPod Classic was Corrupt so i run a restore and it started syncing everything again and seemed to be moving quite fast now however 12 hours later it seems to take a couple minutes on just one song !! what can i do ? it's not even half finished this could take days !!

Quit, forcibly if needed. See Corrupt iPod classic. If the stats are OK try the DFU restore method and then the break up large transfers method to reload the media. I suggest you reboot the computer before attempting to load up the device.

  • My e mail is taking forever to download.

My e mail is taking forever to download. It comes through fine on my i phone via the same wireless router. It is showing the amount of e mails being downloaded, I know there are no large files in there. Its as if something is blocking or slowing down the download. The rest of the computer works fine, as does outgoing mail. Any clues anyone?

Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?  Has it EVER been dropped?  Did it EVER get excessively wet?  Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore and you have IOS-6 or lower, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Time machine to airdisk taking forever...maybe a gig an hour

So I set up my Airport Extreme Airdisk as a Time Machine disk. I started the first backup and its taking forever...if I am lucky its sending a gig an hour on an 802.11n machine.
    Any thoughts?

It seems that Time Machine uses Apple's disk imaging mechanism.
The version of this in Leopard uses a helper app called diskimages-helper. You can see it in the process list of Activity Monitor when running Time Machine, Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner disk imaging.
This app seems to have issues with images larger than around 80GB. I have now shown that whether started by Time Machine, Disk Utility or Carbon Cloner images between 120 and 200GB run flat chat (disk limited) for the first 80GB or so and then slow down dramatically.
How much data are you trying to backup?
On the upside, once the first copy is made. incremental Time Machine backups seem to be very fast. Perhaps if you set time Time Machine with enough exclusions to get the first image down to 80GB, it may be possible to add the rest later. I have not tried this.
On the topic of should you use an airdisk: I see that it is a requirement that the backup disk/share supports ACLs. I think Airdisk might be OK for data files, but probably will not restore a full working boot disk. Have you tried that?

  • Qosmio X500-128, taking forever to boot also Toshiba service station error

    Hi
My toshiba qosmio x500-128 is taking forever to boot up these days, iver rolled back the system using system restore, ive stopped any unessential startup services that i know are not req at startup but the system still takes forever to boot, ive also updated to the latest BIOS etc
Another thing is that everytime i login i get the error that Toshiba Service station has stopped working...
any help would be greatly appreciated

So if I am to do a system reformat. I am no novice with computers but by no means completely efficient at everything. What is the "best-practice" when doing a system reformat?
Burn a reformat disc from the system utilities?
Is there a way to reformat that would install the latest drivers/BIOS?
I am going to have a headache with the stuff on my HDD, eg. iTunes, photos, university work don't think I have enough space on my extra HDD's to store it all then to re-transfer it all back... :(
Lets just say I'm not looking forward to doing it, and I am the one everyone goes to to do these sort of things for, I don't mind if I mess up their computers that much but this laptop is my baby :D

  • Installed the OS update.  Now my 'sleep' command is taking forever to take effect.

Installed the OS update.  Now my 'sleep' command is taking forever to take effect.

I'm having the same issue. My iPod video now blinks on and off with the apple logo every 3-5 seconds. The HD clicks as well, but nothing happens. It has been like this for about an hour now, and my iTunes does not even recognize that my iPod is connected. Is there something wrong with the iPod update that we are not aware of? And if so, how can I restore my software without having to reinstall all of my songs and videos? This is really frustrating, and there should be some kind of warning about problems that can occur with new software updates.

  • Restore Taking Too Long

I visited my local "genius bar" after my 3Gs kept locking up a couple of times a day. They recommended I restore to factory defaults after back-up. I followed the instructions here:
    http://cellphones.about.com/od/howtoguides/ss/restore_iphone.htm
Pretty straight forward it seems but restoring from the back-up it had just done the process, is taking forever. The "Time Remaining" status bar was down to " about 3 minutes" now it is 23 minutes and climbing. Anyone help me out here?

Maybe your backup is corrupted somehow..
Try restoring it as a new phone but you will lose SMS, Pictures taken with your camara, etc.... everything that can't be sync.

  • IPhone update to iOS6 & restore - taking over 8 hours - phone is dead

I began updating my iOS last night to the latest software version.  It was taking forever, and the white status bar on the phone had not moved in hours.  I tried to start it over, and I could not.  After several hours, I pulled the cable out of the phone to begin again. I know this was a big mistake.  Now, I've been trying to restore it for the last 24 hours.  I read some forums that said to re-start iTunes and hold down the center key and the on/off key at the same time, after I plugged it in.  I've done this twice, and the restore is not working at all.  I have no phone to call apple with.  Can anyone help?

I re-started my computer again, and it seemed to work this time. :-)

Have you tried stopping the update and attempting to install again? It could of just been a glitch.
