TM shouldn't back everything up over again after a restore

Since I bought an Air without the solid-state disk that double its price, I have to pay the penalty of having the disk fail every three months. As if it wasn't enough trouble losing the files you were working on and leaving a machine I use every day in the shop for a week while they fix it, after I restore it from TM it keeps backing up the entire disk the next time I plug it in.
Surely there must be some way to mark the fact that the "new" files are identical to the ones in the TM store???
Apple, if you are going to sell us crap that fails every three months (OK, only 3 times so far in 11 months) can you at least make your backup system deal with the regular event of a new disk?

Sure, if TM did a byte-by-byte comparison of every file, which would make all your backups take exponentially longer. I'm not sure I understand why it's a problem.

I understand that you are frustrated, but you need to realize that this is not normal. Be logical: if this were normal, why would there be so many die-hard Mac fans out there? I've been using Macs since 1984, and I've never had a hard drive fail, even on a ten-year-old machine. I was once in charge of supporting 50+ Macs for a period of about 4 years, and during that time, I had some hardware failures, but never a hard drive failure.
You've either gotten very unlucky, or there's some reason for having three drives fail. Are you being hard on your machine? Note that hard drives that get bumped hard enough while spinning can have the disks collide with the read head, which will destroy the disks. This is obviously a more common problem with laptops than desktops, but I have been using laptops only for about 10 years, and with my problem-free history, it's evidently not that easy to do if you're not banging them around (which I don't do).

Because GPS has nothing to do with WiFi, cellular signals, or data of any sort. GPS is implemented by signals sent by satellites that are received by GPS receivers. The receivers process the information from the GPS satellites and calculate your location. GPS never sends data anywhere; GPS functionality is receive only.
If you have WiFi or cellular data turned on this can improve the accuracy of GPS, because the GPS receiver can then use the known location of cell towers and WiFi networks to refine the GPS location. GPS by itself has an accuracy of 10 meters, or about 34 feet. Using the additional information from WiFi and cellular data this can be brought down to 3 meters (10 feet). This mode is called Augmented GPS, or A-GPS.

  • Time Machine Copying all files again after a restore

i recently achieved a successful restore of my computer and now i am wishing to back up my computer again (after installing bootcamp) but time machine keeps trying to backup all my files
my computers name is still the same and when i force a backup the inprocess icon comes up in my external drive(where it should be) but then says there isnt enough space. it also seems to want to back more information then i have on my original hard drive?it also deleted my earlier backups without consent
any help would be greatly appreciated

I would imagine that reformatting the hard drive would remove the event logs that Time Machine uses to determine what has changed since the last backup and so it would be likely to fully backup from scratch. You should be able to view previous backups using the Browse Other Time Machine Volumes menu item in Time Machine given that your computer name is unchanged.

I don't know if I'm on the same page as you.
But if you backed up the phone with those contacts pictures notes etc, you should get them back.
After restoring your phone, use the back up that done when you had those contacts messages etc??

  • Carbonite backing my iphoto library again after upgrading to ilife 11

I have Carbonite online backup and have my system backed up. Since upgrading to iLife 11, Carbonite wants to back up my system again thinking everything it backup already is new files/data. This want Carbonite support saids,"we have reviewed the log files and found that duplicate files are being backed up. As the iLife program has changed the My photo and video directories. These are being backed up again. We would suggest you make changes to the settings of iLife program, so that Carbonite does not recognize it as a new data. " My question, want setting am I changing so carbonite doesn't duplicate my back up? it wants to upload 137 gig of data (again) it will take for ever! Thank you for any help.

I also have Carbonite. Before upgrading to iPhoto '11, I divided my library into multiple smaller libraries just so my computer didn't seem so taxed. I have Carbonite in case my computer crashes or is stolen. After doing all this maneuvering of libraries and then the upgrade to '11, my Carbonite was going bonkers.... it even sent me an email saying I hadn't backed up in over a week. I don't know why I got that email. But, I think that Carbonite finally caught up somewhat to my moving around of files and then upgrading to iPhoto '11.
I think I prefer the concept of taking an external HD or two (making one or two additional copies of my libraries).... and, maybe telling Carbonite to not back-up those libraries (the ones that I don't actively use right now) until my Carbonite has caught up on my actively used libraries. Then, once it says that you are caught up, you can one by one add those unused libraries back to your "back-up" to catch any additional changes you may make on those libraries in the future. This way, your current changes are for sure being captured on your Carbonite back-up.
I don't know if this makes sense. And, perhaps your usage is different than mine. But, I had over 14,000 photos in my single library. Now, I have 9 libraries with up to 4,500 in a single library. I only actively use one library right now. And, will be making sure that one is on my back-up with Carbonite. Then, once that is done, I will add the other 8 libraries one by one until they are all updated all the while making sure my primary is being captured as well. But, if something does happen between now and then, I have my external HD with copies of my iPhoto library at least until Carbonite is all the way caught up.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • Satellite L100-109 starts over an over again after memory upgrade

How do I get my Satellite L100-109 to take the 2GB of memory it supposed to be able handle,
It just keeps starting over and over again.

The DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4200) 200-PIN SODIMM memory modules are compatible with the L100 but I presume your inserted RAM modules are either faulty or not fully supported due to a wrong manufacturer
Therefore I recommend testing the notebook with other DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4200) modules from other manufacturer like Kingston or Toshiba.

  • Why does my new iPhone 5s keep taking me back to the Hello screen after I restore instead of home screen?

I've just plugged in my brand new iPhone 5s into iTunes to restore all the info from my old iPhone 4 onto it but instead of coming up with the homescreen with the icons it just brings me right back to the Hello screen and walks me back through the first few questions for Setting Language, Selecting Country, and Choosing a Wi-Fi network and then finally to Set Up iPhone and I select the Restore from iTunes Backup.  At that point iTunes gives me the selection on their screen and I restore from backup.  I see the Homescreen for a second and then it goes through the whole thing all over again.  What's happening?

Are you sure it isn't just going into standby mode, if you touch the screen when it goes black does anything happen?
Perhaps a recent software update has reset some settings.

  • Backing everything up over IP and not WiFi?

Is there someway to use a external hard drive or Apple Time Capsule with Time Machine when I am not at home using my WiFi network? Maybe I am on vacation and I want to backup everything over IP to my home Time Capsule or external drive.

Actually, they brought in the support for this way of backing up somewhere between 10.5 and 10.6.
No, they didn't. It was tested during the Leopard beta, but has never been supported since the initial release.
I've been doing this since 10.5 and i needed to do the terminal modification, and it's been working absolutely perfectly for me ever since.
As explained in the link provided, it does work sometimes, to a degree, in some cases. But there are many, many threads in the Time Machine and Airport Extreme forums saying it worked for a number of days, weeks, or months, and suddenly the backups are corrupted, often beyond repair. It's happened to me 3 or 4 times in a bit over a year, which seems fairly typical.

  • Iphont battery meter not working/ push notifications not working/restarting over and over again.

A few weeks ago, I went on a vacation out of the country. I had my iphone 5 on airplane mode for a week. When I got back and turned it off of airplane mode, it started restarting over and over again right after being plugged into the charger. Eventually, it seems to get ahold of itself and stops turning on and off, but the phone battery meter freezes where ever it is at that point. If it has 100% battery, it says it has 100% battery until it dies. If it only has 1% battery, I'll leave it on the charger long enough to have 100%, but it will still say 1%. The battery life itself is not any different. According to the meter, my phone will stay on all day with 1%. Also, after being dead, my phone would turn on immediately after being plugged in (rather than waiting a few minutes to get enough charge as usual). I think this is because since my phone does not know how much battery it has, it thinks it has enough to turn on right away.
I visited the apple store, and they told me to restore it as a new phone. When I did this, it did not work at first. But after a day, my phone battery life meter started working normally again, and it stopped doing the turn on/turn off continuously thing. BUT imessage no longer worked. It said "waiting for activation" for two weeks. Also, push notifications no longer worked. Every time I openned an app, it would notify my that i could not have push notifications and to connect to itunes. Certain apps wouldnt work at all (snap chat, lulu). They would just give the alert about push notifications over and over again.
I wanted imessage back, so I restored my phone as new once again. This time, imessage, push notification, snapchat, ect. started working again. But, it has gone back to not knowing how much battery life it has and restarting over and over again after being turned on from a dead state. WHAT DO I DO?! I don't want to have either of these problems. It's kind of like my phone has a virus.
note: the first time i turned it on after coming back from vacation, it said "no sim card" for a few minutes.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
