TM suddenly reporting "volume not repairable"
I've got 2 months of backups nicely stocked on my Time Capsule. Yesterday I had to restart my TC because the internet had gotten slow (this happens occasionally). I happened to switch the speed from 802.11b/g compatible to 802.11n/5ghz while I was at it, hoping to improve speeds (which it did). However, Time Machine is now reporting that my backup volume is "not repairable by this computer" and I must "back up data and reformat as soon as possible." HUH??
First of all, I have no other disk big enough to back up the backup. And would it even do any good, since the volume is somehow broken? But more importantly, how can I avoid losing 2 months of backups? This kind of thing should not happen. Ever.
Well, the first time I tried it, it failed immediately saying it could not be repaired.
After scouring the Internet for more information on this BUG, I found suggestions on how to get repair to work.
Now when I try repair it starts the process but then appears to enter an infinite loop. One time it ran until there was "6 minutes" left. After 24 hours it just kept spewing out the same stuff (continuing to say 6 minutes left).
I stopped it and started again. This time it ran until it said "41 minutes left". It is still running and has been at the "41 minutes" mark for over 12 hours.
The thing that ir really annoying about Apple is their arrogant attitude. They think they are perfect, they don't give people any information. When they do get around to fixing bugs many times they don't tell us what they fixed.
I still think this was a bug that was introduced in one of the latest OS updates and I think it has to do with halting a backup while it is in progress (e.g., closing the lid on a laptop while a backup is running).

I've used an external drive for time machine which has important files on it. After trying to back up my computer, it suddenly needed to be "repaired" by utilities. Now it's not being "seen" at all! How do I recover my important files off the drive?
If the external drive can be seen at all in Disk Utility, follow the instructions for repair here.

Disk Utility Reporting Hardware Failure on Mac HD- Not Repairable
Hi! Looks like my hard drive is toast on my 24" aluminum case 24" imac. NOT under warranty although I bought it in Jan 09. DU reporting Mac HD in RED with message...'disk utility has detected hardware problem which cannot be repaired'. Ok. Will a simple hard drive replacement do the trick? Or, could there be additional grief? Thanks!
Do you have a backup of at least your personal data on the drive? If you do, you should try reformatting (erasing) the drive using Disk Utility, before giving up on it.
Restart from your Mac OS X installation disc, for the system you have installed currently; to do so, insert disc and restart with the C key held down. When you get to the first Installer screen (after language selection), go up to the menu bar. Under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. In the sidebar, select the internal drive. On the +First Aid+ tab, run +Repair Disk+ (not +Repair Disk Permissions+ ). Do you still get that previous error at some point in this process? Do you get some other error that Disk Utility is not able to repair? -
Disc Volume failed, not repaired by Disc Utilities: What Next?
I have a Mac Mini 1.6GHz, Intel Core Duo. Currently running OSX 10.4.11. Hard drive was defragged and when I checked Disc Utility function, it found one invalid node and volume failure. Utility could not repair. I used my Tech Tool Pro and this did not work either. After booting from external drive and running TechTool Pro Volume diagnosis on the Mac drive, Mac drive crashed. No repair. I wanted to upgrade my OS from 10.4 to 10.5, but it is not working. I assume there is a relationship. Other than this, no problems with computer. What can I do?
I just worked on a mac mini that had the exact same problem.
I was able to fix it using Disk Warrior......took 5 days of continuous scanning I was able to get most of the data back for the user.
It's an expensive piece of software, but it did it's job. -
Suddenly Preview will not open any documents
All of the sudden, Preview will not open any documents on my MacBook Pro OSX 10.8. I can get the program itself to open, but when I try a PDF, I get an error.
The only thing I did today was add a second monitor to my setup using the Diamond USB Display Adaptor Pro BVU195. I don't recall if the issue started immediately thereafter or not. I tried unplugging the device but it didn't fix anything.
I ran the disk utility and repaired any disk permissions that it identified.
Here's the error:

Thanks very much!Okay, well, the Diamond displaylink for the second monitor looks like it was the culprit. I uninstalled and Preview (and Parallels) is now working again.
So, that leads to the next topic. I did a bunch of research and it looks like there is no way to hook a second monitor up to my MacBook Pro (not Retina). Besides this Diamond thing I've also tried Matrox DualHead2Go, which I couldn't get to work despite several hours on the phone with customer support. Is there no option? -

Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume is a serious directory error which Disk Utility cannot repair.
•I suggest you read through the article.
•Then, if you do not have an up-to-date backup, it will be a good idea to try to save as much as you can of your data.
•The article suggests using a third party utility. Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro are the best utilities for this job. You will need to get one of them and run it, by booting from the CD, or installing it on an external firewire drive or on a second Mac which you can then run in Firewire Target Disk Mode.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
Good luck.

have a mac book pro that crashed. ran disk utility to repair. comp booted and ran for short time. then crashed. ran repair again. disk utility said it could not repair disk and needed to format and start again.
comp said it could not unmount disk and now when comp trys to boot all i get is a question mark on the screen. helpErase and Install
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU after formatting completes and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
5. After restart into Snow Leopard download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. -
A crash, volume needs repair?
Hi, I have no idea what has happened. It's embarrassing but I can't even tell you accurately what OS X I was using but all my software was up to date. When I try to open applications like Safari, it says "you cannot use the application Safari with this version of Mac OS X" The same goes for iTunes and other apps. Some programs just quit unexpectedly when I try to open them. Seems like it reverted back to a very old operating system I didn't even know existed. Even the JPEGs open with a different program I don't use. When I click "about this mac" it says the memory capacity is 512 MB when I know it usually 250 GB and I currently have 25 GB free. I tried Disk Utility and the error messages read exactly as followed: Volume bitmap needs minor repair. Invalid volume free block count (it should be 6873884 instead of 6873859) The volume Machintosh HD needs to be repaired. Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit. First Aid failed. Disk Utility stopped verifying "Machintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit. HFS volume checked volume needs repair.
I stopped messing with it because I have no idea what to do and I don't want to make it any worse. I have installation disks buried in storage but I'll get replacements if that's what it is. I'm panicked. Please helpWelcome to Discussions - boot from your install disc and use Disk Utility to repair your volume. If that fails, get hold of DiskWarrior and use that.
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
When you have finished, reboot and repair permissions from your hard drive. -
1 HFS volume needs repair -- can't boot from OS X Tiger "kernel panic"
I just searched the support discussions and did find an answer so hopefully someone can help me. Today I ran Disk Utility on both my G4 powerbook and G5 desktop. Both have Tiger 10.4.8 on them and have been running good. To my surprise both came back with a message saying:
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair.
So I booted off my Tiger start up disk on the laptop first and went to utility and repair disk and all was good. The message came back that the volume was repaired.
When I tried to do the same thing on my G5 desktop my computer went to a gray screen and gave an error of “kernel panic” with a page long message. I shut the computer down and rebooted normally and all was fine. I then went back to disk utility and clicked on Verify Disk again to see what it said and here is what I got:
Verifying volume “MacOS250”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Illegal name_
Illegal name_
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume MacOS250 needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
So i noticed that under:
Checking Catalog file.
Illegal name_
Illegal name_
came back twice. I have no idea what this means. At this point I tried to boot from DiskWarrior and the computer just sat in a state of limbo for an hour or so. I know DW can take some time but 1 hour was pushing my patients so I shut it down and rebooted normally and all was fine again except I still get the message above. I then methodically backed up all my docs, movies, photos etc to my second hard drive. I tried to boot again from Tiger and got the same “kernel panic” message. Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Tim
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)Maverick922 Before you erase, you might want to try and run fsck first even though it says you are using HFS+
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Another reason is your version of disk utility on the Tiger disk might may not match the newer version of 10.4.8 My Tiger start-up disk utility is 10.5 while the OS X version on my HD is 10.5.6.
The Finder along with other applications do not like you naming a file with a period in front of it. This turns it into a Unix dotfile and it then becomes hidden.Hence, illegal name. This may have been done by accident or with purpose.
And a little more to read up on, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
If these don't help, sherry johnson's suggestion is probably the next step. -
Applications Volume not found in Finder (Mac owner for 3 weeks)
Hi, I goofed today. I had an error in my Verify Disk (Below), so I thought I would boot from my OSX CDs, and fix it in Repair Disk. I ended up actually going through a new installation, choosing the non erase option. (I did not know how to boot from CDs)
However, the install would not complete. I booted from the Backup Drive and that worked well and copied the backup to my Mac HD. (Using Carbon Copy Cloner on a LaCie FireWire Drive)
All seems well except in Finder, when I select Applications, it says Volume not found. However, when I choose Applications from my Macintosh HD Volume, the Applications are there and work fine. Documents, Photos Music is all accessible from Finder left side Icons.
What do I need to do to get my system back to normal?
For future reference, how do I fix the initial problem, and how do I boot from the OS CDs
Thanks for your help

MBP 17" Core Duo 2.16MHz Mac OS X (10.4.9) 2GB RAMJS_MACNewBie,
Assuming Disk Warrior can successfully repair your file structure (good luck, BTW), this doesn't mean that you are "out of the woods."
When you have a disk error, especially one as serious as the current one, some files will undoubtedly be damaged. Repairing the file system, when successful, does not repair the damaged files; it only returns the file system to a "consistent" state.
If these damaged files are critical system files, you are going to continue to have problems. Disk Repair utilities (Disk Utility included) are indispensible tools, but they should be used only in emergencies such as yours to facilitate making a good backup prior to formatting and reinstalling.
Only by formatting, then reinstalling can you "fix" the files that may have been damaged by the disk error. I recommend that you do this immediately, once you are able to make a good backup of your important files.

Stuck in reboot-Volume needs repair?
Stuck in reboot. Able to reboot using my start up disk, ran disk utilities, after running "repair disk" I get the message "HFS Volume repaired" then I ran "verify disk" I get the message "0 HFS volume verified- 1 volume needs repair. I ran each, ""repair" and "verify" several times and get the same conflicting messages and I still get stuck in reboot when trying a "normal reboot". So it looks like my hard drive needs repair? I may have access to a "Tiger" install disc which I understand has improved disk utilities, should I try this on my Panther machine? Thanks.
As Sherry has already helpfully noted, the retail Tiger 10.4.2 (or later) Install DVD has a version of Repair Disk that has significantly improved disk repair capabilities compared to earlier versions. It remains true, however, that the best-recommended utility for handing disk directory problems is DiskWarrior. That's an option if the Tiger 10.4.2 + version of DIsk Utility can't make the necessary repairs.
Reagrdless of what utility you use, anytime you run a repair utility that reports making a repair, best practice is to immediately run the repair (not verify) utility again. Many times, one error blocks discovery of other errors, so you want to run the repairs until you either get an all-clear report or it becomes painfully obvious to you that the repair utility isn't working.
If you mentioned this earlier, I managed to miss it: what does Disk Utility say about the SMART status of the hard drive? If the SMART status is reporting failed, you might as well skip Disk Warrior and look to borrow another Firewire-equipped Mac so that you can try booting into FireWire target disk mode to recover what you can from your hard drive. Data Rescue has a one-file free evaluation mode; you could try that on the second Mac to see if it'll help you recover your data in the case of a failed SMART status. -
Volume needs repair AND hard drive problem...
OK so I have an Intel Based iMac and its about 1 year old. Randomly I got a message saying that the hard drive disc space is almost full, which makes NO sense. I have a 250 hard drive and I use it mainly for video editing. Before I got this message, I had about 100 GB left on my hard drive. I have NO CLUE where 100 GB went to, and i know it was not from video. Also I went to the disk utility and it said "Volume needs repair" and it gave me an "The underlying task reported failure,". Im not sure what to do and I'm hoping you guys will.....if this has been asked before, I apologize.
Yes, you can delete it, but it indicates a bigger concern namely your maintenance scripts aren't running regularly to clean up the logs or you have a problem in the system or an application that is writing huge amounts of information constantly into the log file. You should check the log using the Console application (Utilities folder) and examine its content to see if this is the case.
You should also read the following for information on installing utilities that can assure the maintenance scripts are run as well as other information on system maintenance that can help keep your computer running better.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

Slight Panic - Volume Needs Repair
Ok, so I am in a bit of a panic mode here right now. I started hearing a whine from my system hard drive today, so I backed it up and ran Disk Utility's "Verify Disk" option on it as a first step. Disk Utility tells me that there is a minor error and that the volume needs repair. Great. No problem. Except my machine refuses to start from the system DVD's that came with my G5. It's a revision A, so it came with Panther on it, but should that make a difference? I get as far as the blue screen when trying to boot from the CD and then it freezes. What are my options here? I need to repair this drive and see if the whining problem disappears and it comes back verified clean. HELP!?
EDIT: The error that comes back is: Volume Header needs minor repair. The volume MacintoshHD needs to be repaired. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
Just moved this from the G4 forum. Didn't realize that's where it was! LOL. See what panic does? So, I went with Bmer and the fsck option. I ended up
having to use the -f command rather than -y, not sure
why. It said it has something to do with the volume
being journaled. At any rate, after locating the
problem, it repaired itself and all is back to good!!
I ran disk utility immediately upon restart and the
volume passed. In addition, the whining that made
me feel like I was at a loud rock concert last night
is now gone as well. THANKS, BMER!!
Your welcome! I always recommend running fsck too after "forcing" your computer to restart after a crash. Your HD directory can get messed up and add to the original problem.

Disk First Aid Not Repairing Drive
I need to fix an issue with my external firewire drive and I need to know why Disk First aid won't repair the problem.
I have an IMac CoreDuo 20" 2GB RAM, 250GB Internal drive and 250GB External firewire drive (this one has the issue)
I executed a restart on my Mac tonight and when it came back up I recieved an Invalid B-tree node size on both partitions on the external firewire drive. Can your software fix this problem? The volumes won't mount, but Disk First Aid will see them.
Disk First Aid reports:
Verifying volume “disk2s3”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Invalid B-tree node size
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
Verifying volume “disk2s4”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Invalid B-tree node size
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
Ran disk first aid. Results above. TechTool Deluxe won' t look at the external drive. The Pro version of the software repairs external drives, but their site doesn't state whether you can fix Invalid B-tree node size errors. Formatting and starting over is not an option. I have data on their in which I captured last week on a business trip and was going to back it up tonight and ironically, this happened before I could.
I can't figure it out though. The drive didn't go through any crash or serious outage. I simply told my Mac to restart and this error appeared on reboot. I just switched to Mac as my main system about 8 months back. I have been using PC's for 20 years and never ran into a problem like this. It really concerns me that Mac file systems aren't reliable and if can't repair this, I will need to rethink whether I want to keep a Mac as my main system.
Can someone help me with this? I sure like using Mac and hope there is a simple solution to this.
I have tried booting from the Mac OS X cd as per Apples recomendations, but with no luck. I did use a trial copy of Data Rescue II just to see if it could see my data and it can, so I do have hope that this should be resolvable. You won't believe what I had to do to get back some of my files, but here goes the explanation.
As I mentioned earlier, I used TechTool Pro 4.5.1 with no succes. I also used a tool called Drive Genius from Prosoft Engineering and it was not successful either. I did get some more error information when trying to repair the partitions with Drive Genius. Here are the messages I received:
Error : Invalid HFS+ signature found in the volume header (0000 - (n).
Error : Invalid HFS+ version number in the volume header (0).
Error : Invalid HFS+ total block count found in the volume header (0).
Error : Invalid HFS+ resource fork clump size found in the volume header (0).
Error : Invalid HFS+ data fork clump size found in the volume header (0).
Error : Unable to get the HFS+ volume header.
My only other option was to purchase Data Rescue II from ProSoft Engineering and attempt to recover the files I needed. I had a bunch of recordings I had made with ProTools that I had not had a chance to backup to another location yet.
It took a couple hours for the scanning processes and then the files were listed to recover. I selected the session folders and told it to recover. The file s were copied to my local hard drive and I was getting excited, until I tried to open one of the files. The wave files would not play and the PorTools session files wouldn't open. I was very frustrated since the file sizes seemed to be in line with the files were on the original drive.
What I ended up doing was, using Text Edit, I opened a known good .wav file that was created with ProTools and one of the recovered files that wouldn't play and compared the headers. It appeared that the recovered file had the data portion, but not the header. I copied the header from the good file and pasted it into the recovered file and saved it.
Was I surprised when the file played. Now, most of the .wav files I have done this with work with no problems at all. A few of the files have bad spots (bits) that added distortion to the clip, but I was able to import the files into ProTools and edit them out. It appears that the bad spots were additions to the file and did not overwrite any thing. So I just cut them bad spots out and I am going about my business again.
The bad new is I will be spending most of this weekend manually restoring these files. The good new is that I will get them all back. There has to be an easier way to do this though.
In Summary, the problem is not with the physical drive as a thourough drive scan says that the hardware and drive is okay. The problem lies in the Apple file system (HFS+) itself.
I sure hope this information helps someone out there. If anyone finds an easier way to fix this, please post it here and let everyone know.
