TM switched off--continues to backup

This is strange: out TimeCapsule started blinking amber and when I went to the utility it warned me we were nearing capacity...WHUH? FIrst of all it's a tera. Second I've had it turned off for my machine recently and my wife doesn't have that much to backup on hers. I got info on the drive and sure enough it said we had over 900 gigs on it; 550 just from mine.
So I go to the TimeMachine preference panel and just as I thought, I had it switched off. Yet it also said my most recent backup was this morning at 1 a.m. I looked at the directory and it had backups going back to April. All this time it was switched off.
Can anyone explain to me how TM could be backing up when I had it turned off?

Alan Brunettin2 wrote:
No I don't see it backing up. I have it set for a 1 a.m. backup.
Well now, that actually brings up something I neglected to mention. I am running TimeMachineEditor to override TM's need to do hourly backups. My usage didn't require such over-use of backup and I couldn't stand the bogging down of the system when it would start its back up process.
But that's just doing what it's supposed to do, as in backing up every morning at 1. I wonder if that be also overriding my having turned off TM?
That's entirely possible. Those 3rd-party apps edit the "plists" that Time Machine uses. A number of folks have reported problems after using them. That's one of the reasons why I don't recommend them. See #13 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
As noted there, if your backups are causing serious system slowdowns, they may have been extra large, or there was some sort of conflict. See #D2 and #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Oh also, that full reset of the TM? That would also delete my wife's back up right?
No, as noted in #A4, a full reset doesn't delete any backups. All it does is deletes the preference file, which can cause problems if it's corrupted; and re-selects your TM drive.

  • Can you switch off continuous play?

I have an iphone 5. When playing songs is it possible to stop it automatically playing the next track?? I don't want to have to put each track into a different playlist. I'd just like to play one and then when it's finished I can then press play on the next track. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The only suggestion I have is to tag your songs as "Skip when shuffling" and turn Shuffle mode on.  That will make playback stop after the selected song completes.  The downside is that this is an all-or-nothing thing, so to disable this you'd have to not use Shuffle, or re-tag your music again to turn this setting back off.  If it is just a specific set of songs maybe that's not a problem.  The "Skip when shuffling" setting is done in iTunes, go to Get Info and look on the option tab for the song(s) you want to change.

  • HT1766 My Iphone 4s dont open up after i switched off it. when i open it it is stuck in the apple logo mode. I cannot switch it on again. is their any way to backup my photos since i cannot switch on my phone?

My iphone 4s dont open up after I switch off it. When I click the switch on button it blinks the apple logo in the black background. Is there anyway that i can backup my photos since I cannot open my phone?

    Hello Ganewee,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It is certainly impossible to use your iPhone if it won't power on.  I found some steps that can help with an issue like this:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

If you get to step 6 where you have to restore your iPhone and your iPhone is recognized in iTunes, I would try backing it up before going through the restore.  You can find steps to backup your iPhone here:

    I hope this helps!

  • N95 8gb switches off while taking a backup with co...

    Hi All,
I have Nokia N95 8gb with FW 30.x. There is some problem when I try to backup my phone using the content copier on PC suite. The phone just switches off when it reaches the point of backing up device specific settings.
It shows a green tick for messages, calendar, notes, bookmarks etc. Then it fails at settings point. It successfully creates a backup files which is about 12 mb only. My previous backups have been in the region of 170+ mbs. So, something is definitely wrong here.
One other weird thing I notice when I bring up the 12 mb file for restoration, it only allows me to restore "user files from the phone memory". Even though it showed green tick for calendar, messages etc...it dont seem have been backed up.
I'm desperate to get this working. Any help will be appreciated.Thanks.
    List of Nokia phones I've used: 3310, 3315, 3200, 6600,3250, N73 ME, N95 8GB, 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia X6 16 GB (currently using this).

well...strange as it may seem but I was finally able to take a backup of my phone. I could do it on another PC of mine running XP and having a very old version of PC suite - 6.83.X
I'm still not able to get it working on Pc suite 7.x and nokia ovi suite 1.1 on Vista

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.

  • HT1766 automatic backup to icloud what does switched off mean? power off?

automatic backup says phone should be 'switched off'. does this mean short close at the top or power off?

I just reviewed HT1766 (the document where you originated your post) and even used the browser search feature but nowhere could I find the words "switched off."
The only statement I could find was: "Automatically backup your camera roll, accounts, documents, and settings when this iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi."
The above statement does list the correct requirements for automatic backup. Where are you seeing "switched off"?

  • Need to switch off Mac during TM backup

What would happen if TM was in the middle of a backup but I had to switch off my Mac (for whatever reason)?
Would anything get seriously messed up anywhere or is TM so clever that it'd just pick up where it left off next time I switched the Mac back on?
P.S. Am a PC convert and VERY new to Macs. The forums and help offered on this site is unparalled. Thank you.

    Automatic Stop and Resume
Never skip a beat. If your Time Machine backup is interrupted — because you took your portable on the road or put your Mac to sleep — Time Machine will simply stop backing up. When you reconnect to your backup drive again, Time Machine automatically picks up where it left off.

  • Continue playing from before, switch off automatically

I'd like to use my iPod nano as my source of music in the car. I've seen quite a lot of car kits. The disadvantage I see with all of them is when you start the car you have to re-select your playlist and start the iPod playing and (ii) when you turn off the ignition you have to remember to turn the iPod off or it will keep playing and may have a flat battery when you come back.
Is there any way for the iPod to detect when power is available on the USB port and restart playing from where it was at the time it was previously switched off?
Is there a way for the iPod to switch itself off when the USB port is powered down?
    Thanks for any tips.

  • ITunes Match is syncing my music library using 3G but I have the option switched off.

    Hi,
I have found a problem syncing my music using iTunes Match and my iPhone has used 2GB of my data plan in a day. The steps to reproduce the problem are:
Precondition: iPhone is using iTunes Match and has a list a few songs in the cloud without syncing.
    Steps:
Switch on 3G connections in the settings. (Settings > General > Mobile data > Mobile data & 3G ON)
Start syncing a list of music.
Switch off the option to use data plan to sync music (Settings > Music > Use data plan > OFF)
Result: iPhone continues downloading all the songs of the list using my data plan.
Expected result: iPhone stops syncing the music because there is only a 3G connection and the option is switched off.
This is why I would like to make a complaint to Apple. How can I do it?
    Thanks.

Everything that is on your device should be in your library too. If that is not the case then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. See also Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy.
Once you have secured your content you can work on resolving the sync issue.
When the media on the device won't update as expected during a sync the method that usually works is this:
Export the contents of the camera roll. (You should do this routinely anyway.)
Backup the device, unless you have a recent backup that you would prefer to restore.
Restore as a new device. (The general restore process doesn't seem to clear things out before reloading, so there can be issues with missing artwork or incorrect capacity calculations.)
    Restore the chosen backup.
In some cases it might pay to use the recovery mode method given in HT201263: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch at step 3 to ensure that a device has been completely reset before reloading your content.

  • My iPhone 4 has switched off for no reason , and now I am unable to switch this on again ??? if anybody has a answer about how I could reboot it , he's welcome, many thanks .

my iPhone 4 has switched off for no reason, and now I am unable to switch this on again???if anybody could help about a reboot tip , he's welcome, many thanks...

    1. On your iPhone 4 press and hold both the button and the Home button for about ten seconds. After ten seconds you should see the Apple logo showing up.
    2. Now try to run you phone again and see if it works.
If a hard reset the still can't get the device back to a working order.
    1. Plug in the device to the cumputer and start iTunes.
    2. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake + Home for 10 seconds.
    3. Once you see the Apple Logo appears, release the power and continue to hold down the home button for about 5-10 seconds. Look iniTunes and see if your device have shows up.
    4. iTunes will notify you that you are now in Recovery mode. Click on OK to continue with the restore process.
    5. Next press and hold on the SHIFT button and click on the Restore button. Select the latest IPSW file and the prompt appears.
    6. iTunes should now attempt to get your device back to the manufacturer setting.
    7. iTunes will later give you an opportunity to restore you content from the PC. Every time when you do a sync, iTunes makes a backup so you can choose the latest backup from the sync.

  • BB Curve 8900 - Intermittent switch off

My BB Curve 8900 intermittently switches off for no apparant reason. It starts up again with a blank screen, takes about 2/3 minutes & then boots up again. It loses the page it was on.
Any ideas on what the issue is & how I can fix it?
    Thanks.

I'd look first at putting a piece of paper, like a business card,, or a folded piece of normal paper, on top of the battery, and putting the battery door back on. Try that a few days and see if the spontaneous rebooting continues.
