TM wants to start a new backup

I have several months of Time Machine backups. TM can't see the old backups and wants to start over - TM Preferences shows Oldest backup:None, Latest backup: None. I've not allowed it to start a new backup.
In finder, in /Time Capsule/Data I can see the backup file for this laptop i.e \Time Capsule\Data\MacBook Air
When I "Enter Time Machine" I can see all my backups going back in time (I know this sounds strange, one part of TM can see the backups while another can't)
There was a point when this problem first occured that Finder on this laptop couldn't see the backup file i.e. \Time Capsule\Data appeard empty, whilst I could see it in Finder on an iMac which also successfuly uses TM on the same TC (more on the iMac below). I repaired disk permissions on the laptop and rebooted the TC and laptop a couple of times, and at least I can now see the backup in Finder.
May or may not be related, but at the time this problem arose, I was setting up a new iMac and used Migration Assistant to copy from an old MacBook's TM backup to the new iMac (computer to computer wouldn't work and BTW it was much quicker from TM). When asked, I chose for the iMac to inherit the backup history of the MacBook. In Finder I can see the MacBook's backup (MacBook.sparsebundle) as well as the iMac's (Macintosh).
I saw a reference to my symptoms in an old Apple Support note which suggested the Computer Name may have been changed in Sharing Preferences. I checked and it still matches the name of the backup (MacBook Air).
I am afraid to allow TM to start a new backup, that it will lose my backup history.

It will, but you have no choice. The disk image file is corrupt and must be replaced. You can copy it in the Finder to another storage device so that you may still have access to the data, if it's mountable.
Backing up over a network is slower and less reliable than backing up to a local hard drive. You need more than one backup to be safe, as this experience shows.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

How to make TM start a NEW backup

Since January and updating to 10.5.6 (not sure if that had anything to do with it), my iMac had been freezing up and required me to manually power off and on, at first a few times a week, later increasing to several times a day. I suspected a HD failure, but no hardware tests or SMART status tests indicated so. Since February, Time Machine has been doing backup. A couple of weeks ago I finally had time to do a reformat of the iMac HD and did a full reinstall and updated directly to 10.5.7. Since then I have had no freezing issues.
But. I now have the TM backup from February till mid-May on my external HD. I would like to keep it as it is, all 200Gb worth, and have TM start a totally fresh backup in a new folder.
After reading pages of information about TM, it seemed people have had trouble doing the opposite, i.e. make TM use build onto the backup which was already there. So I figured TM would do what I hoped; make a new folder in the Backups.backupdb folder with the new computer name (I changed the name on purpose when reinstalling).
I set up TM preferences to use the same disk as before, as there is still more than enough space. I was surprised to see what happened:
- The backup folder name changed from the old "EX iMac" to the new installation's name "Exxx Xxxx's iMac".
- A new dated folder (....inProgress) was created, but with the same date as the last backup made from the old installation a couple of weeks ago, rather than today's date.
I cancelled the backup right awayas this wasn't what I was expecting, so the "folder" name is still "2009-05-16-124351.inProgress"
- When I enter TM through the UI, the HD name has been changed for all the old backups (used to be "Macintosh HD", is now "Mac HD ny").
So it seems that TM in its wisdom recognizes the iMac as its old self, and wants to continue building onto the old backups. This is exactly what I don't want... when space runs out on the external HD, I don't want the old backups to be pruned at all. I want to keep the old backup as-is, for future reference etc., and have TM start a full, fresh backup of my near-empty iMac, which it can do its incremental and space-saving thing with later on.
Any ideas as to how I can persuade my computer into agreeing that this is a worthwhile concept?

Thank you for your input. As I wrote earlier, I have reformatted the internal HD and reinstalled a "blank" system. So yes, most files, documents etc. are now found only in the TM backup. One reason for not simply doing a full restore from the TM backup was to allow time to make sure the internal HD was not in fact failing, and being able to reintroduce things step by step in case the problem should materialize again.
The whole point of wanting to keep the existing TM backup as-is is to make it be there "indefinitely". That doesn't mean I trust the external HD to keep it safe for all eternity, but as long as I am trusting it to back up my stuff, why not let it keep my old stuff as well? Although, admittedly, it is space consuming and the important stuff will be present in both the old and the new backup, once I get it running. Old backup > iMac > New backup. You should see how many papers I have in my shelves from years back

I recently upgraded to Lion. Every time I start up iMovie, it asks if I want to go ahead and generate thumbnails. I say OK, then it alerts me that it cannot file the file IMG_0073.MOV. Then it says "Without this file, the movie cannot play properly." It gives me the option to either cancel or search for the movie.
I don't have the old file it's looking for. I simply want to start a fresh movie with new material but cannot get past this hump. Based on the little research I have done, some people experienced this problem because the files were in aperture at some point, which was the case for me before when I used iMovie. I have since moved forward only with iPhoto but perhaps it's hung on an old file format?
I tried taking another old movie and renamed it IMG_0073.mov to see if I could simply select it, give it what it wants and move on but it won't let me select the file for some reason. Time Machine tells me to start a new backup

Recently I changed the motherboard in my MacBook Pro because of a crash in the graphics card. When they gave me my computer back Time Machine has been seeing it as another machine, when it has the same hard drive (which is the one I want to back up). How can I tell my Time Machine that it's the same computer and to add on to the backups I had before I sent it to be fixed instead of creating a new backup from scratch?

It's a large pain, and easy to mess up (I did, not once but twice ), but you might be able to use the procedure in #C8 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Within the next 5 months we certainly should have a production release available (current schedule is end of June 2006). We will try to maintain upwards compatibility as much as possible, but you might have to redo some code.
One general advice: do NOT modify the default JHeadstart Generator templates. Instead, make a copy of the default template, rename it, and specify your custom template through the new Templates tab in the ditor.
New JHeadstart versions are likely to have changes in the template set, you must re-enable Jheadstart on your project to get the new templates which will wipe out any changes you made directly in the default templates.

3rd Gen Ipod touch. I want to start as new, not restore.

I have a 3rd gen Ipod Touch that I want to delete everything and start as new, but it keeps wanted to restore. The ipod touch was my sons, and I upgraded him to a 4. I have an older ipod and I was hoping to upgrade to the touch, but it won't let me start new. Please help. I have tried restoring, but it fails. Is there a way to completely wipe it out so I can use it ??

I asked this question before regarding my Time Capsule. The following message appeared after a recent Time Capsule update. "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you."
I would choose not to loose all my data and are currently looking into other "Carbonite" options to save my information off site.

You can't "copy" it, but you can "clone" it to the new drive. The new drive must be properly prepped for use with OS X using Disk Utility, if you haven't already done so.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the New backup drive. Source means the Old backup drive.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

New Logic Board - Time Machine wants to create a new backup

This has me stumped. I just got a new hard drive and logic board from Apple. Plugged my external hard drive into my computer, turned time machine off and 'Entered Time Machine' to copy files over back to my computer. All worked as advertised.
Once I had some of my files copied over, I went to turn time machine on. Time Machine informed me that I didn't have enough space on my hard drive (it wants ~94 gigs free and it has 30 free, but it should have been able to delete the oldest backup, free up some space, and we should have moved on). At no point did it ask me if I wanted to reuse the backup or not.
I then wondered if it needed to get further along the backup process before prompting me to reuse the volume or not. So, I excluded like 98% of my hard drive and made the backup ~3 gigs. The backup happened, but now in my Backups.backupdb I have a MyComputer which contains all of my old time machine backups, and a MyComputer_2 which contains this last backup.
I trashed the MyComputer_2 folder and 'Entered Time Machine'. It pulled from the correct place and I saw my backups trailing back into history, but apparently I no longer have permission to view the desktop folder as well as the other 'protected' folders in my backed up home folder. I repaired permissions on the off chance that it would fix it, but it didn't.
Something is clearly broken, do the masses have any suggestions? I found multiple suggestions for how to deal with this under 10.5, but nothing about 10.6.

I don't know why you didn't get the "reuse" prompt, but that wouldn't prevent a new, full backup. You have a new internal HD. Even if it has the same name as the old one, Time Machine knows it's a different disk, so will back up everything on it. You cannot prevent that.
Your first problem is, you didn't transfer things onto the new drive properly (Apple Stores often give bad or misleading advice on that.)
And, you may have corrupted your backups by "trashing" the MyComputer_2 folder. Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks: +*never move, change, or delete anything in your backups+* via the Finder.
Try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that works, your best bet is probably to do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You obviously had a problem with your Mac; depending on what happened and when, it's possible that damaged your installation of OSX and/or some of your data. If your last backup(s) were done after that started, the corruption may have been backed-up.
If that's a possibility, and you do the restore properly, but it fails, try it again, but select an earlier backup.

No permissions, locked out and want to start a new install

I have a mini that had the latest Lion Server installed and was being configured,
I know very little about servers and it would appear my friends who were helping set things up know even less. As I have now found out tomy cost.
This was a refurbished MMserver direct from Apple - preinstalled with Lion Server. After it was almost configured with admin, users, filesharing, mail, ical etc and ssl authentication, a bunch of new users, groups etc suddenly appeared in the admin interface. All these were deleted to leave only the ones that had been set up.
Now the users we set up along with admin can log and use the machine as a user but cannot do anything that will affect the systemas they do not have permissions. Even the names with server permissions have been restricted access
When logging into the server app I get the following message.
Msg: This server is not supported. Server supports servers running Mac OS X 10.7.
If I go into Apple Software Update it wants an administrator's name and password...the one used to log into the system in the first place no longer works.
Given there is no data / files of importance on this machine, I thought I would use Disk Utility to start again but hit the same issue of not having permissions. I have tried all the names and passwords I know and which were used and non have worked.
If I then use cmd+r on boot up nothing happens it just continues to boot to the log in screen,
I looked in server admin and nothing is registered and when i add the server name..it just searches but does not do anything.
How can I get this back to to the start - a virgin system....so I can start setting it up?

Are you using a wireless keyboard? If so, try a wired keyboard to initiate Recovery mode.
Also, confirm that you have a local recovery partition by starting in Single User mode (Apple - S on startup). At the command prompt type
diskutil list
And finally, you mentioned this is a refurbed mini. What model is it? Is it one that supported internet restore?

I want to start a new itunes library

I have an older itunes account that I shared with a friend. I set up a new appleid for myself, and want to have my own itunes library with all new songs. Each time i go to itunes and sign in with my appleid (new), it shows the old library, but i can't manage my new account. I have tried uninstalling itunes and starting new, but it defaults to the old account even without signing in.

Launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and create a new library, or use separate user accounts on the computer. Apple IDs are separate from iTunes libraries.
