Tmobile 521 Error 8018830f updating to Windows 8.1

Read that 8.1 was available for my Lumina 521. Didn't get any notifications so tried the manual update. It downloads the file but when it attempts to install it I get the "8018830f The Update was Downloaded but couldn't be opened" error. I have 4g of memory free. The only apps I have are the ones that came with the phone. In other articles this error is a memory error but not the memory the user has control over. I have the correct date and time. I did a reset by pressing the power and volume then resetting the date and time (pressing those sets date & time to 2012) I read doc that Msoft fixed this error back in August but I keep getting it. I tried this all day and get the same error.
Tmobile has a doc from November 6th that the Windows 8.1 update is available for this phone. My phone meets the requirements mentioned ie wifi connection, 50% battery life & 321 MB available memory (File size of update: 321 MB)
I have firmware 1030.6409.1316.0016 which shows in Tmobile's doc my phone is eligible for the update.
Any other ideas or info if the update is really up and ready for my phone?
Thanks

Thanks Hans! I was hoping I didn't have to do that.
I did a backup to the cloud and ran that recovery tool. It did update my phone to 8.1.  It downloads 1.6g to do the update and takes awhile. Near the end the tool asked for a pin but nowhere was there a place to enter it. Just ignored it and it completed. After the update, it wouldn't let me log into my Msoft account so I could restore things like some doc showed. It never gave me an option to do a restore. Tried a reset as some Msoft doc described, couple times, no option to restore. Finally I went into Backup where it allowed me to login to my Msoft account, got out of backup as there's no restore options there, went to the sync options in settings and turned them on. When I went into OneNote's options I could see on the top of the phone it was syncing. Same thing happened with my contact list. This seemed how the restore was done, not automatically or with a restore option as some doc described.
I did loose my text messages and I had to re-set up my desktop. The backup/restore didn't seem to save any of that. I also had to re-do my settings like ring tones and other things as those didn't get saved/restored either.
So in conclusion, this was a solution but a severe one at that. Luckily for me I didn't have much on the phone and saved the important items described.
Just a note: Both my post with Hans's above are solutions to this if anyone else needs it. Maybe there's other ways to do a complete backup & restore. I was disappointed that process didn't put you back completely since you can't access any of it yourself and can only use their process to back it up to their cloud. If you accidently deleted some contacts or files from an app, I don't see a way to just restore some things like a normal backup would allow.
BTW, I had a heck of a time loggin in yesterday. Kept getting page not found errors along with need to add a alias. Finally today I was able to log in.

  • Error when updating iTunes (Windows 7)

This morning, I got another notice to update iTunes on a Win 7 machine. The download seemed to go smoothly, but twice the installation failed with little information about why it failed. The error box suggested I try download only and install manually.
Okay, I've tried that. Again, the download went well, but then a Windows Explorer box opened with not one, but FOUR files on display.
AppleApplicationSupport (type: Windows Installer Package), 32,312 kb
AppleMobileDeviceSupport (type: Windows Installer Package), 10.060 kb
iTunes (type: Windows Installer Package), 68,852 kb
    SetupAdmin (type: application), 76 kb
I don't know where to go from this point, but I threw caution to the wind and double-clicked iTunes Windows Installer Package. It went to work until I got another error message: "Error writing to file: C:\Config.Msi\1279ed.rbf.  Verify that you have access to that directory."
I ran the repair thing on the Apple Software Updater and tried again, but with the same results. "Errors occurred ... . If the problem persists, choose Tools > Download Only and try installing manually."
Huh? I hesitate to hit the Retry button. My experience tells me that just brings up the same error. Can someone help me decipher this mumbo-jumbo, please. For one thing, I can see nothing to guide me for "installing manually." That list of four items: Where do I begin? Do I have to install each package, one at at time? Why is it so complicated?

I don't know where to go from this point, but I threw caution to the wind and double-clicked iTunes Windows Installer Package. It went to work until I got another error message: "Error writing to file: C:\Config.Msi\1279ed.rbf.  Verify that you have access to that directory."
Are you running Kaspersky security software on that PC? I tend to identify that message with Kaspersky interfering with the install.
If there is Kaspersky on board, we should try some general-principles getting-past-security-software-interference troubleshooting.
Download and save a fresh copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (32-bit installer file) or iTunes64Setup.exe (64-bit installer file) to your Hard drive. (Don't run the install on line, and don't start the install just yet.)
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Restart the PC. After the PC restarts do not open any applications. Disconnect from your network and/or the internet. Now switch off all your security software (firewall, antivirus, antispyware).
Now start the install by doubleclicking the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) file you downloaded earlier.
Reenable all security software prior to reconnecting to your network and/or the internet.
Any better luck with the security software shut down?

I have contacted Apple support by email and have a case number. I have followed the advice given including re-entering payment details, re-installing iTunes to ensure I have the latest version, deleting the SI directory, and other actions.
I can still update Apps in my iPad. Anyone else getting this? Not to happy with unknow error, please try again later

Apologies for being so impatient! Still do not like unkown error in iTunes store message as it seems unprofessional not to know what was wrong.

    Hi,
Windows update error 0x80070020 can occur if a program is interfering with the automatic update process.
Restart your computer or restart your computer in safe mode with network, then try to install the updates. Detailed information you may reference the link below(this applies also to Windows Server 2012 ):
You receive error 0x80070020 when you use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site to install updates

  • Get error 8018830f when trying to update my device

    Hello everyone!
I develop Windows app as an hobby. I also try to learn the whole Windows ecosystem with C# as a base. I have bought myself a Nokia Lumia 520 and a Microsoft Surface RT first generation for the purpose of this developing. The OS on the Lumia 520 is now 8.10.14176.243.
Now, when I try to update the phone, I get error 8018830f. I have done following:
Let the phone reach 100% charge
    Reset the phone
Double-checked that all accounts are correct and all dev. tools are installed
    Checked this forum
    Did an Internet search
I have not found a solution for my device, the 520, but I found some interesting threads about the 900-series. Links will come.
If anyone has a thought, please, share? =)

    Hey, please See this
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/mobile/support/faq/?action=singleTopic&topic=FA143712
If your phone was enrolled in the Windows Phone Developer Preview Program but was reset or otherwise removed from the program, the Lumia Denim update will not be available, or reports an error 8018830f. To recover this, first check your phone for any of the
updates for the Developer Preview and then install the Lumia Denim update.
You may also use the Software Recovery Tool to return your phone to the latest approved version of the software. You can download the tool at www.microsoft.com/mobile/support/recovery-tool.
"Solution suggested is enrolling back to dev preview and updating to latest OS version available, after which you should be able to update to Lumia Denim, if it is available for your device. This sort of confirms that if you are on developers preview
already and updated to latest version, you will get Lumia Denim automatically."

    Hi,
    Try the following.
    Open an Elevated Command Prompt.
Type in ( or just copy and paste ) the following command ( including spaces ) and hit enter.
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
This will take a while to complete, but when it’s finished, restart the notebook.

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.

Please can someone help me with a problem that I have trying to download any updates for windows.
Every time I search for downloads the error code C800044E appears.
I dont know much about laptops but can follow instructions.
I have been on microsofts website and done as they advised ie safe mode etc but nothing works.
Please can anyone help me...Ive had the laptop for a couple of yrs and I want to give it to my young children to use for schoolwork etc but it keeps crashing.
I have done several scans for both virus & spyware etc but they come up clear.
Hopefully someone can help me and talk me through how to sort this problem out with clear steps lol...
    many thanks

I know, it sounds stupid now but you can also visit some Microsoft forum and check for solution.
In my opinion Toshiba has nothing to do with this.
By the way: you should disable automatic update. Before you start update check the list of all stuff offered by Microsoft. Do not update some driver.

  • Windows 8.1 Update from Windows 8 Giving Error Message During Installation

I was instructed to use a generic Windows 8.1 key, and then change it to my Windows 8 key after installation. But, at either 94% or 96%, it gives me the following error during the installation:
    Windows 8.1 Update has failed.
I have tried everything online and can't find anyway around it. In the meantime, all of my Windows Store apps are broken, and thus I can't update from the Windows Store. I have the correct ISO files from http://microsoft.com/ and I even have the option to
install Windows 8.1 from a program that was automatically added to the "Classic Start Menu" that was presumably placed by Windows automatically. No matter how I attempt to install it, it fails. I would really appreciate it if someone would help me
    soon.
    Thank you,
    Ben

    Hi,
I was instructed to use a generic Windows 8.1 key, and then change it to my Windows 8 key after installation.
    What's the meaning of it?
Did you update from Windows 8 operating system from Window store?
Please locate to %WINDIR%\Panther, see if there is any clue in the setupact.log and setuperr.log.
Meanwhile, please refresh or reset your original Windows 8 system to ensure it's complete and correct.
Then retry to update to Windows 8.1 from Windows Store.

  • Error 80072f8f after installing Windows 8.1 / 2012 R2 "Update"

I just want to share my experience with the new Update.
We are using a WSUS (on Windows Server 2012) with a Wildcard certificate from Geotrust for some time now.
I manually installed the new "Windows 8.1 Update 1" on a Windows 8.1 and a Windows Server 2012 R2 System, both joined in the Domain and were able to update with the WSUS.
Right after the update both systems keeps failing to communicate with the WSUS with error 80072f8f.
After changing the ssl certificate on the WSUS Server to a internal PKI certificate the Systems could talk again with the wsus Server.
So keep in mind when you upgrade to check if the system still works with your wsus server.

I am also getting the same issue where the 80072f8f error occurs when attempting to scan for updates.
The client machines are Windows Server 2012 R2 (with Update 1 installed) and the WSUS server is also running Windows Server 2012 R2 Update 1.
You answers are not remotely helpful in this instance.
The OP has mentioned several times he is using a Windows Server 2012 WSUS box. Therefore the article you reference has no validity for this issue.
TLS 1.2 is enabled by default on 2012 so the linked article and advice unfortunately does not fix the issue.
Has anyone else had the 80072f8f error when using a Windows Server 2012 R2 WSUS box?
We see errors in the CAPI2 log for Verify Revocation Information
and Vertify Chain Policy. Althougjh browsing to our WSUS server in IE shows the correct validated certificate.
    Any help would be appreciated.
